  • A simple watercolor waterfall tutorial. Moving water such as this little waterfall is the easiest form of water to paint. I'll take you through the basic steps.
    Colors used:
    Ultramarine Blue
    Pyrol Red
    Quinacridone Rose
    Indian Yellow
    Phthalo Green
    Paynes Gray

    Ohhh 😲 wow!!! The way you explained how to break down the adding of color to the actual section of the moving water in the waterfall was fantastic. I have been struggling with how much paint to put. Doing it with vertical lines of shades and shadows makes much more sense to me than my trying to keep it horizontal.
    Yes I am still working with the bad not good quality paper at times too. Thanks for sharing this with us and I can’t wait to get my paints out to do another waterfall with these techniques.

    Yes, waterfalls might seem one of the hardest subjects. One crucial thing Steve did here to improve the overall atmosphere was at the early beginning: 1) choosing the right brushes for the rocks and 2) let the color of the rocks bleed into the reflective stream at the bottom. You can do whatever you'd like to a white waterfall, pop rocks in there, divide it, make it several levels, but there are certain details that have to be done just right at the right time. And yeah, waterfalls are a BUCKET of fun, my favourite so far has been painting Salto del Angel in Venezuela. Just an idea, amigos!
    Amazing control here, Steve. Thank you.

    Love that you grabbed your gel pen in the end to add those lovely highlights Steve. Question: what about gouache? I see a lot of UA-cam artists using it for painting water or other things where they want to add white. I haven’t used it yet. Thanks for this beautiful waterfall tutorial. I hope to give it a go. Blessings to you!

    I have not seen watercolor boards before, (I'm always behind the times) Looks like Aquaboard by Ampersand is the only one I'm finding that comes in a real variety of sizes. Is there an advantage to the boards that would warrant the extra cost?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 років тому

      Not really. Just preference. WC board is rigid thats the only advantage. Some people prefer the feel of painting on illustration board. Standard illustration board doesn't take watercolor as well as Arches wc board. Ampersand's Aquabord is not the same at all. Its a masonite panel primed with absorbent watercolor ground. Very different than wc paper.

    Thank you so much for this video, I'm looking forward to painting some of the little streams and waterfalls That I've been hiking up this summer. The paper you used looked pre-cut, is it Aches? What lb is it.? I have been appreciating the vignette style of watercolor more, I'm having a hard time getting out of the paper stretching stage here and moving on to more painting!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 років тому

      I actually don't know what it is. It was given to me by a friend and had been laying a round so I thought I would try it. It is actually precut watercolor board. I would say it acts pretty similar to Arches cold press board. Not as thirsty as their cold press paper but rigid.

    Nice demonstration Steve. You managed to simplify a complex subject. Learned something about gel pens. What brand is the gel pen?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 років тому +1

      Thanks Jean. I like the Gelly Roll white pen best. I only use the white and very sparingly. Because it dries waterproof, I like that I can glaze color over it so it doesn't look so white.

    • @JeanLurssen
      @JeanLurssen 8 років тому

      I use gouache sometimes to retrieve whites. It works well and I like that it is water based and you can lift it.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 років тому

      Yeah, I used to do that but highlights for me are a final touch and almost never needed lifting. For me being able to wash a glaze of color over them is huge. Different approaches for everyone! 😊

    Would it be better to start with black paint or ink and do value studies before colours? Even with the 6 colour palette I see a lot, I still have no idea what does what. Thanks!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 років тому

      +Nikesh Jaggan value studies are a good idea, but won't help you much with color. Just have to play with the colors to see what they will do.
