I call these kinds of days “skier’s ski day.” You’ve gotta love skiing to be out on those days. Just had one of those last weekend. Wet snow (rain at lower elevations), poor visibility, and high wind gusts, but that didn’t stop my family and I from getting out there and having fun 😃

"Let's stay in the trees, it'll be better." That is my personal motto. At Brian Head we had a similar combination of high wind, and painful high-velocity pellet snow. We are lucky to be at 10-11,000ft, so we generally don't get too melty - generally.

had a day at Targhee back in November where it was dumping snow with high winds and low viz. Even the green traverse at the top was skiing like a mogul run but with zero viz. Not my best day on the mountain, just glad I made it down. :)

As someone who grew up skiing NY (not even the Adirondacks) just skiing beaver mountain by Logan was life changing hahaha. Can’t wait to go to snowbasin in February

Good stuff. I'm a fan of Snowbasin. I hope you can make it back when the upper mountain is open. All the stuff on the right side looking at the hill was really cool terrain, especially with a short hike. Also lone tree chute was a highlight. Thanks for making the videos and hope you can make it to some of that terrain!

Too bad Strawberry was closed. First time skiing Snowbasin last month. Not a bad mountain overall. Facilities are a bit pouffy but that’s cause the owner is the same guy that owns Sun Valley. Ski on!

First off, love your videos. You mentioned Snowbasin is a low elevation mountain. Park City and Snowbasin are similar. The base of Snowbasin is only 500’ lower than PC and only 200’ less vertical. Snowbasin average snow fall is 100” more than PC. But compared to the two best mountains in the world, snowbird, and Alta, it is a lower elevation mountain.
ah gotcha. then why is the snow quality different?
On that day it may have been, but most of the time it is typical UT fluffy snow. This year the storms have started off warm. Yesterday was warm when the snow started, but dropped with 16” of fresh fluffy overnight.
As a local this year is amazing and i can’t wait to ski no name when I’m back from sun valley

Your killing me your getting record snow we’re getting record warmth here in the north east I may have to fly out soon. Can you imagine. All I need to do is grab my gear and fill my tank and I’m at Stowe in 3 hours. Now I need to fly 3 hours. And spend 3 grand. Thanks again for all your efforts.

I was there Sunday and It was AMAZING. It SHIT all over the cottonwoods IMO. ESPECIALLY the lodges.

Lucas, can you explain? I’ve never heard “cream cheese” as a descriptor.
And I’ve got another question for you if you can help.
I’m 60 and only ski with my 30yo daughter. We normally only get out west in the spring (last March at Park City was miserable!) so we rarely get ANY powder. But if/when we get the opportunity, can an intermediate skier handle steeper than usual terrain when there’s more powder? It seems to me that would be the case.
Also what difficulties are there for first time powder skiing? Any tips?

tough to explain but to me cream cheese has a solid, but soft base with a nice creamy layer on top.
i think the deeper snow is more forgiving to get on steeper terrain and slows things down, but skiing powder can be tough in and of itself. biggest thing i tell people is to keep your thighs pinched together as it will be really easy for the deep snow to grab your skis. dont force your inputs or step your way through the turn. have fun!!

Looks like videos I've seen of Japan... Mammoth is closed here with 52" of snow they said... it's been coming down here like once in a 25 year flood, but no rain on the coast today. Maybe you could talk about how to drive and tire selection so you don't spin off the road on black ice... back in 2008 I got a Jeep SUV just to go to the snow in Tahoe and the first time I took it I spun out on black ice into a wall of snow, probably due to the crappy tires, we never had any trouble in my ex-gf's new VW Beatle with front wheel drive but she probably had better tires since my Jeep tires were old and came on the Jeep when I bought it... but you seem to have no trouble. Are you running any special tires? I'm probably going to get some General Grabber ATX with studs in them and run them half the year going forward. Thanks for the videos and the shots of Utah.

@@LucasCatania17 Thanks, I live in Utah close to NV border. I have and will ski Snowbasin this season. On Monday where I live the weather was OK at 5k feet. Some sprinkles around 3pm, no snow. Today is really crazy it hit 65 degrees. Very rare. Thanks for posting!
