- HERE YOU WILL SEE MY *PRE-ARRIVAL VIDEO* OF THE FDNY OPERATING FOR A RECYCLING TRUCK FIRE ON WEST 41ST STREET IN THE HELL’S KITCHEN AREA OF MANHATTAN IN NEW YORK CITY.
I had a fire in my truck when I worked for NYCS and I immediately dump the whole load out before the FD got there thus saving the truck!
I HER YA! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Always dump the load. No reason to cause that much damage to the truck just so the Fire Dept can have some fun.
I once drove around the corner to see a truck dumping in the park and I quickly realized what was happening. It didn’t take long to be a full fire once it was out.
@@robertsumner9657 Got to remember this is the usa....Probably scared he would get sued or a hefty ticket for dumping trash in the street....guarantee some sharp shooter lawyer would make a case out of it if they could.
I have to say that seeing them use a metal cutting saw "with no eye protection" .. was an eye opener! ... interesting
OK.....
Just dumb and unsafe!
Safety first right? If they didn’t have enough sparks to ignite something, they definitely did now. And lots more oxygen for the fire, after they cut a hole.
correct! Very dangerous! That’s very unsafe and dumb! And I say this as a firefighter with 21 years in service now! That’s not good brothers 👎☹️
As a 1st responder EMS in NY. It’s soooo annoying when you “buffs” get in our way of the actual emergency. You’re probably the only one that actually displays common sense and gets out of the way, so that we can get to work. I thank you for that. Nice clip.
WELL, I TRY REALLY HARD NOT TO EVER INTEREFERE CAUSE I KNOW HOW HARD YOUR JOB IS ALREADY! THANKS SO MUCH.....
understand your statement and as a former EMT in NYC I completely agree with your assessment.
It sure turned into a different game when those hydraulics failed to operate. Great coverage and thanks for sharing!
YES, IA GREE! THANKS SO MUCH.....
B4 i became a Firefighter i work for waste management in Phoenix AZ we was train to when you first see smoke dump out as soon as possible even if you are on the Interstate. Pull over and dump it quickly
WELL, IN THIS CASE THEY MUST HAVE NOT KNOWN BECASUE THE HYDRAULICS FAILED OR BURNED OUT! THANKS SO MUCH.....
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 because they wait to long before they drop
I don't get why the trucks are equiped with a fire suppression system that strays foam inside the truck. I'm the fire is contained inside the truck kick the air off this putting out the fire.
@@kylef8232 cost to much money to install. It be cheaper to repair the damage than to install it
Right just like putting seatbelts in buses.
pre arrivals are the best! great work as always john-thanx for all u do
I AGREE AND YOUR WELCOME! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Pre-arrival footage is the best. Nice job getting that truck opened up. Could have been an inferno inside.
I AGREE GARY! THANKS AGAIN......
Another great video! I miss my beautiful New York. Keep making your fire videos. Thank you!
I WILL DARRIN AND COME VISIT SOMEDAY WHEN COVID IS COMPLETLY GONE! THANKS SO MUCH.....
As mentioned by other readers the load should have been dumped. The problem here is the driver waited too long to dump. With all the garbage truck fires I ever fought the best results were with a dumped load. You can see the issue is hydraulic since as the hopper section started to rise it goes up a little and then falls as the system fails After members cut in they still could not pull anything out because a modern garbage truck can pack 1000 lbs. or more into one cubic yard of space. This truck normally dumps with an front mounted ejector plate that pushes the load out the back. The driver attempted to push the load out of the hole the members cut but the truck could not build pressure due to failed hydraulics. Fortunately this truck is repairable. A new truck like this is a 300 to 400 k investment. So if any garbage route drivers are watching dump as quickly as you can once you determine there’s a fire in the body. I have seen these go until the entire truck is destroyed.
I AGREE AND APPRECIATE ALL THE GREAT AND EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION YOU ALWAYS PROVIDE THOMAS! THANKS SO VERY MUCH.....
The problem I see was they opened the rear of the truck a full two minutes before the lines were even charged with water. This allowed air in and the fire to breath, then it burnt through a hydraulic line. If they had waited till the water was good to go this most likely would never have happened.
The training the driver should have had teaches them the procedure is pack it... pack it... pack it... Get to the closest clear area then immediately eject the load call for fire department while packing the load. The packing reduces the air in the load causing it to smolder instead of burn allowing more time to get to a safe spot to eject and upon starting ejecting eject as fast as the truck can and get the truck clear.
During the last few years of my career I had no desire to go to any more vehicle, rubbish or garage fires.
I HEAR YA! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Just before you said something all I could think of was what a wonderful aroma that must have had LOL. Thanks for the coverage.
IT WAS BAD MAUREEN! THANKS SO MUCH.....
You are such a wonderful man to bring us all these events! I have never seen anything like this before and I am grateful. It’s such a pretty truck....Be careful in this heat, John. ❤️
YOUR WELCOME AND THANKS SO MUCH ZELDA.....
As a fire fighter I can say thank you to the people who try to help and point to where the fire is however it’s not necessary 99.9% of the time we no exactly where we’re going especially when smoke is seen miles away
OK.
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 great video however
AWESOME JOB ON THE TRUCK FIRE FOR ALL HANDS ON IT NICE JOB JOHN ON THE FOOTAGE AN VIDEO
THANKS SO MUCH.....
The garbage truck driver is thinking ..there goes my raise that I was promised. Great Video
YUP! TOO BAD.....;o(
Not the driver fault . This happens a lot
@@ATF1985 I was joking
Not his fault he couldn't really avoid a fire
Good video. FDNY knows their stuff. Dispatch redirects units to a different response as acting when the normal units are busy on other calls. Sure enough in the case of this fire, the acting units had to respond.
YES INDEED! THANKS SO MUCH.....
FDNY know there stuff .....if they had a charged line deployed asap instead of watching it burn they might have been able to salvage it ffs
I’d love to live in New York, I’m a big fan of American Emergency Vehicles, and to see it in real life would be amazing. Great video JJ!
COOL! MAYBE YOU WILL SOMEDAY! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Well the recycling truck is now officially a fire truck.
HAHA.....
They should have just called a heavy wrecker to lift the back up so they could access it. What I think happened, was when they started to open it, the hydraulic hose melted from the heat of the fire.
MAYBE.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
Wow, genius. You should be in an officer position
Woo that will a blaze very nice catch Sir as always watching from the U.K. god bless you
THANKS SO MUCH.....
Hell's Kitchen has really been cooking the last few days!
YES, IT HAS INDEED JOHN.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
luckily two of the guys have tanks of fresh air on their backs. not like burning plastic is carcinogenic or anything...
YUP......
Great job as always
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank god for all firefighters around the world ..also I just love the NY accent
I AGREE AND THANKS SO MUCH.....
Long time ago I worked on that type of truck in a shop. The hydraulic lines on the side were probably destroyed with the fire shooting out. Which prevented lifting the rear.
YES, THE WERE.....THANKS SO MUCH JAMES.....
Awesome catch my man! I’ll bet 30 truck was excited when they saw a loom up haha
YUP.....THX.....
Excellent catch my friend
Thank you very much!
I’d bet Tim Alan would love being a firefighter. He’d get to play with power tools all day.
HAHA! ;o)
Read that as "Home Improvement" was playing in the background lol
Hi again John, One of two things, hydraulic line burned up, or he is over-weight, and the piston won't pick up the box. Later my friend!!
YOU ARE RIGHT ROGER. I THINK BOTH WERE FACTORS IN THIS CASE. THANKS SO MUCH.....
Great video jj
THANKS SO MUCH.....
Awesome job on the video, hows Tourism in the Big Apple, getting back to before pandemic levels yet?
IT IS GETTING BETTER RICK SLOWLY! THANKS SO MUCH.....
I saw a video homeless guy shit in a mop bucket down where the subway was so things seem to be getting back to normal
@@thomassimmons7127 LOL, OMGosh, I'm busting a gut. Yea, ya ever see that TV commercial, where the woman is letting her dogs or cats in late at night? But its raccoons, and shes talking about them snuggling with mama. I can't remember if its a eyeglasses co, or insurance comercial. Either way, ask JJ about hits rats video, and him letting them in, because hes not wearing glasses. No, Maji's video wasn't exactly like that, but it sure the hell was funny!..... i think when i asked him the question, i must have seen some really skinny rats, and i figured, once tourisms back, maybe they'll fatten a few up!?🤭🤣🤔👀🤫🚒🚔🚑
Must be a 10:75 happening with my emoji's.
Been watching FDNY videos for years. First time seeing one of them use a face shield.
OK.
At least it was recycling and not trash, saved your nose a little bit, good catch.

Awesome catch JJ! Glad everyone and including the driver of the truck was okay! Was the truck still drivable?

thanks man.

Nice video again!
Glad you liked it!
gives new meaning to the term dumpster fire
HAHAHA! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Truck fires must make those firefighters crazy.

That will be a costly repair on this dump truck!!
I AGREE! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Cost to put the fire out $400 cost to repair garbage hold $8000
@@mrwilliecowie no they will take it out of the fleet and it will get clawed in the scrap yard.
@@truckspotting7473 they’re not gonna scrap the whole truck. All that may need to be fixed is some electrical and maybe hydraulic lines and cylinders. The holes they cut can just be welded back into place

Just a thought Maybe don’t open rear of truck until you have water available! Everyone knows air fans the 🔥

Great scene video!
THANKS SO MUCH.....
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 You're welcome
In a pinch you need add hydraulic fluid and a wrecker. Because you need a way to lift the gate and eject the load.
I HEAR YA! THANKS SO MUCH MARK.....
Nice video JJ! We’re you right next to skyler Fire at the time?
YES, I WAS! THANKS SO MUCH RASHON.....
Our garbage haulers dump first then call the F.D., makes a mess but saves the truck. Last incident was a Waste Management truck, one huge mess but the WM crew did an awesome job on the clean up.
YES, I AGREE! THE HYDRAULICS WENT OUT ON THIS RATHER QUICKLY TOO! THANKS SO MUCH MARK.....
Ours call the fire station, drive there and dump in front of the station.
Engine 221 was responding from engine 34 & Ladder 30 was responding from ladder 4 at time when call came in
Maji, the same thing just happened in MN. But that was a semi truck of scrap metal, burning. I said dump the load out. First fire truck pulled up, fire kept burning, second truck, they get a line over a fence, and eventually the driver and the FD figured out, dump it. But the video shows a State trooper hurrying to get in his car, and somehow, someway, some goes around the sign truck and another vehicle blocking the road. You would think, nobody could, it'd be impossible, but how in the H_ll do people not see all the cars stopped, the vehicles with flashing lights, a sign truck, and yet, someone always gets around them? The S.P. said you may want to get behind them before he starts writing tckets and confiscates the mans DL.
OF WOW! GREAT STORY RICK. THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING IT WITH US ALL.....
looks like a training class nice safety glasses
WELL.....
Good video
THANKS SO MUCH.....
He should have the back open dumped it b4 FD arrived
THE HYDRAULICS FAILED ALL TOGETHER....
A good reason not to throw lithium batteries in the trash, they don't like being crushed by the compactor.
I HEAR YA! THANKS SO MUCH.....
@ 12:25. I Can't believe that guy is cutting WITHOUT EYE PROTECTION
I HEAR YA.....
No mask up on that fire attack? Thats some nasty carcinogens ....and also running that saw with NO EYEWEAR....one tiny sliver and his career is over.
I HEAR YA......
How does the relocating system work? Great Catch!
WELL, WHEN A LOCAL COMPANY IS AT A FIRE OR OTHER SCENE THEY GET ANOTHER COMPANY TO COME IN AND FILL IN FOR THEM. IN THIS CASE THERE WAS A FIRE DOWN THE STREET WHERE THE LOCAL COMPANIES WERE AT AND SO THESE 2 WERE COVERING FOR THEM AT THE TIME THIS FIRE CAME IN.....HOPE THAT HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND IT A BIT BETTER.....THANKS SO MUCH TOM.....
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 are there companies who fill the space of the acting comanies
The drivers are trained if the load catches fire the are to ram it all the way to the back to pack it tight to choke the fire and go to the dump. The dumps have an area to push the load out on so it can be spread out so it can be extinguished. They need a heavy tow truck to lift the back up so they can pull the recycling out
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE GREAT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SEAN.....
Great Catch, not fire related but that dodge with the goose neck towing 3 cars, is that common over there?, im in New Zealand, and i have to say it looks impressive along with your Fire engines, keep safe everyone and keep smiling
YUP! THANKS SO MUCH.....
fire sums up NYC this summer.
YUP.....
Would it have been an option to just drive it to an open lot or drive it somewhere to dump the load and then extinguish the fire?
YES, BUT THE HYDRAULICS FAILED SADLY.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
Drive a garbage truck on fire through Manhattan ?
@@treypz you'd be surprised there is a proper technique to get you to a safe spot to dump the load starting with packing the load multiple times this causes the fire to smolder instead of burning by reducing oxygen content in the compactor then get to a safe unloading spot and as fast as you can offload the truck and move the truck away
I warned grandad not to put his depends in garbage after eating at taco max .... one spark... wooosh lmao 🤣
HAHA.....
Is 30 truck still rocking a model 28 or did they switch to a Q?
YUP.....
Respect aux pompiers excellente travail aux aussi pour votre dévouement
WHAT?????????
That camera is what we firefighters know as a TIC
YES AND THANKS SO MUCH STEVE.....
Why the refuse driver didn't drive twenty feet farther (panic) training would have helped, get the unit opened so they can fight the fire. Why in the blue blazes nobody wears eye protection NYFD cutting metal is beyond me. Wear air packs nobody has a clue what is in the hopper of a garbage truck.
WELL, THE HYDRAULICS FAILED.....
Wow you just see a little bit of everything in the city lol
YES INDEED DANIEL.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
14:05 yes i love it the most usefull helmets. Look how looks helmets in Poland
COOL......
It would have been better to call the fleet wrecker to the scene to lift the tail gate with the boom of the wrecker. Could have saved the garbage company a few penny's rather then cutting the side of the box open. the fire was pretty much out so a few minutes of waiting would have been ok. great video as always
I AM NOT SURE HOW IT ALL WORKS BUT THANKS.....
When a dumpster fire just isn't enough.
YUP....
Surprised you're not a civilian employee for FDNY under Public Relations.
I AM TOO! I SHOULD BE THO! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Just think of those guys hadn’t passed the fireman’s test they might have been on the other side of the truck
Garbage men make more then fire fighters , truck driver make more as well , damn shame but it’s true, atleast in Michigan
YUP.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
Nice catch jj 🤮👍
THANKS SO MUCH.....
I've seen more access doors on sides and top. Good job though
ME TOO! THANKS SO MUCH.....
When the Refuse Truck dumps its load due to fire....who then comes to remove the rubbish. Is it the Refuse company or the Sanitation dept.
IT WOULD BE THE PRIVATE CARTING COMPANY.....
I have a question? Why do they still have to send the ladder truck even tho it looks like a simple fire for just the engine crew to fight.
WELL, TO HELP OUT TH ENGINE LIKE THEY DID1 THE TRUCK DID ALL THE SAWING! THANKS SO MUCH.....
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 Ok!
The ladder trucks also carries a lot of other equipment on it that the engine doesn’t have. Such as the saw, tools, etc.
@@scottyrogers8286 Oh, yeah!
What are people putting in there trash because tbw idk how a truck like that happens and I seen weird things like this there was actually back in 2014 when a biggest black smoke aka a large fire just happened a front of my face me wondering what are people even doing to there life or risking other people to danger and what a great video you just shared and giving example what people shouldn’t be doing to cause a fire
THANKS SO MUCH.....
Lithium batteries, cigarette butts, wood stove/fireplace ashes, etc.
I have the utmost respect for firefighters be they full time paid or part time volunteers and rarely critizise what they do but I can't help thinking that this was a very expensive cock up from start to finish. The hydraulics were probably burnt out by the flames on them while the back was open all that time while they got the water sorted. Surely with so little sign of fire apart from the wisp of smoke after they had got the water on the fire and the back had closed back up they could have got the rubbish truck to somewhere more open and brought in a big digger or shovel or forklift and lifted the back up as I've seen fire departments do in other videos on UA-cam and empty it that way. That would have surely been a much cheaper alternative to cutting the whole thing open in the sides. I noticed, unusually for FDNY, there were no senior officers in attendance. Maybe if there had been the whole episode would have been dealt with differently. And I am in England and our firefighters do things differently to your guys as well!
COOL! THX.
In UK fire engine carry water so there have hose direct to tackle the fire as soon as there arrive
OK.....
The fire engine carry water too...750-1500 gallons...but procedure is to hook up to a hyd. I would have attacked this a lot faster then they did.
Could've opened it on both sides to see if there's any fire on the other side. That's what we do if the hydraulics are shot.
THE DID! THANKS SO MUCH.....
This garbage is powerful even can save the fire for a while.
OK.....
They burn when we fix them too it sucks once in great while we call fire they can be real hard to put out fire gets into tiny spots when welding
INTERESTING TO HEAR! THANKS SO MUCH.....
What's with the wood blocks on some of there helmets?
WELL, TO HOLD DOORS OPEN AT FIRE SCENES IF NEEDED.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
Is it compulsory for the FDNY to walk about with giant toothpicks at every incident
They’re holding hooks and Pikes, this is so that they can drag any debris out the way or break a roof with a pike, they do other things with the tools. They don’t carry them for no reason aha 😆
YES.....
Now the trash company needs to find a way to patch the hole. Great video overall..
YUP! HAHA! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Wow
YUP.....
What the hell is this, Explorer Day? #1 don't EVER fucking open them without water already on/under them. #2 If you have to cut for access because they won't open, cut down in from the top, you don't need a door, just slots. #3 if you're wanting to access all of the fire, get close to the hole in the side and aim up so that the blast hitting the top inside sprays it all around. Two fails and an ignorance. Same rules as with structure, hit the ceiling.
And use your safety gear when cutting...
OK.....
Damn that water!
OK.....
When letting oxygen in it can re ignited due to it begin tightly packed
YUP.....

HEHEHEHE! TOO FUNNY RICK! THANKS SO MUCH.....
- had the same type of job about a year ago, would of been better to dump the load then cut it open.
THE HYDRAULICS FAILED CAUSE OF THE FIRE! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Soooooo hearing protection when using cutting tools? In ten years they’ll be claiming work-related disability for hearing loss.
I HEAR YA! ;o(
Thay should of cut some of the roof out instead of cutting the sides out a good truck body shot now the driver should of put up the tail gate and opened it up more or open the back blade up my family was in business in the Bronx some time ago Bronx County Carting trucks are not cheep
I HEAR YA AND UNDERSTAND SAL! THANKS SO MUCH.....
Why didn't thay a tow truck to lift the back up

ooh my goodness, NYCFD does not know what they were trying to cut in to, thats like trying to cut through the armor of a tank, its not going to happen. About 17 years ago all recology changed how vehicles work there are no more top loaders for recycling to prevent people from stealing from their trucks and the trash is the only one with a top load.
But they got it open
Looks like it did happen to me. Smh
I HEAR YA! THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE INFO AND COMMENT MICHAEL.....
Should have just dumped the load immediately, for the hydraulics failed and had to cut open its belly.
THE HYDRAULICS WERE GONE BY THEN.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
Can't help but feel not moving the garbage truck at beginning to middle of the road would been a smart idea, gives them plenty of access both sides of the truck on fire, shame they tried to open the trucks back more aswell as this obviously made things worse and forced them to cut the sides.
I THINK SO TOO! THX.....
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 I just feel the cutting was all non necsersary cause I think if they just pumped more water into the opening they had, it would probably been drowned out. would they do any investigations into what caused the fire and how they tackled the fire? Would be a intresting read on this incident expecially if there was a section titled what we can do better section
Wonder if it will take an steamy dump ? There was another video on here called Trash Truck Takes an Steamy Dump and it showed the trash truck dumping it's burning load on an neighborhood street. =^.^=
OK
The operator should have dumped the load in an open area as soon as he noticed the smoke.
