“There is” or “there are”? Matching Verbs in English

  • In some situations in English, it can be difficult to decide whether to use a plural or singular verb. Even native speakers get confused in these situations. In this grammar lesson, we will learn how to match subjects and verbs. I’ll also talk about some of the nuances here: sometimes it’s better to change the sentence entirely. Make sure you understood the lesson by taking the quiz here: www.engvid.com/there-is-or-th...

But I would say that the video still helped. I only started studying a month before the exam, so I believe that if I gave myself more time and did a lot more practice questions I would’ve done better. Butttt, the grammar section of my test was the strongest (again this video helped).

Hi Adam, how's it going ?, nice greeting you again, that was an excellent and very educational video lesson because it helped me to clear up a few doubts I had about these types of pronouns and I can see that I wasn't wrong in some structures but I realized that I've been making a mistake every time I speak and use these words or expressions but I won't make it again thanks to your explanation so I thank you very much for this video lesson.

Great video. i think, for the first example, the reason we would say (is). Is because although there are three objects, they are single items.
If you make it, chairs, table, and a TV. We would say, (are).
The English logic is that if you make any part of the sentence plural, we will say {are). if all is singular, no matter the number of individual items, then we say (is).

    Practical as ever👌
This area , as you've already mentioned Mr. Adam, might be a source of confusion for many English learners( even advanced ones ).
Talking about that, I've got one question, please:
●When it comes to the quantifier♡ALL♡, wouldn't be possible to use a singular verb with it???
    For instance, if we say:
    ▪All coffee has been drunk.▪
    Or
    ▪ All furniture is sold in this shop.▪
I mean can't we use a non-count noun after ALL and then follow it by a singular verb???
    Thanks in advance ❤
