Thanks, Rebecca. I use a lot of your videos for the ESL class I teach. They're very clear, and it's also nice to see all the info you've written on a white board. That saves me from doing it too! 😊
Rebecca, this lesson would have been the perfect lesson to discuss a grammatical error that is displayed at the check-out counter of many supermarkets where a sign is posted that reads "This aisle is for ten items or less." Here the difference between items that can be counted (such as bottles of water or containers of milk) and those that cannot be counted or cannot be easily counted (such as sugar, rice, and salt) dictates whether the words "fewer" or "less" should be used in these situations.
i am a filipino and had been taught that the word "some" per se refers to or means 'more than one' or 'several'. hence, 'are'. except in the case of 'someone' or 'somebody' which are definitely singular (because body and one are both singular.
The word "some" can be confusing too, sometimes. I spill some milk on the table. In this case, "some" means "a little" I speak to some people at the park. In this case, "some" means "several"

“Some of the equipment are heavy." This is because "equipment" in this context is considered a collective noun and should be treated as plural when referring to multiple pieces of equipment. Therefore, the correct sentence is:"Some of the equipment are heavy."
As said by Rebecca, equipment is known as an uncountable noun (I googled it and there are many!) which is always singular, and therefore we would use “is.” I’m familiar with abstract nouns such as love, freedom and fear, but I learned something new today about uncountable nouns :)
'Some of the equipment are heavy'. This is because 'some of the equipment' refers to a number of equipment. So they are heavy. The plural for equipment is equipment, and you can not say 'some of them' when you are speaking of one piece of equipment. In that case, you should say,' A portion of the/this/that equipment is heavy' The entire lesson actually helped me. Thank you
When I first learned English in primary school, many, many moons ago, we learned that things like teams are grammatically singular, so in a cricket match, the commentator will say something like "Australia is in trouble now", even though the team of course consists of many individuals. And indeed, that is just what they did - until perhaps ten years or so ago, when suddenly, one day, all sports commentators apparently collectively decided that teams are plural. And so now I constantly hear them saying things like "Australia are in trouble." As much as it pleases me to hear of the Aussie team's woes, it grates on me every time I hear that kind of thing. After a lifetime of battling it out with English grammar, and still constantly stumbling over its many pitfalls, it now turns out that even native English speakers cannot decide what the correct usage of their own language is. I give up. I shall henceforth wave around my accented, barbarian English with pride. :-)

Native English speakers almost always get this right, but many of us don't really know why that is. I did know it was singular/plural related but this was most illuminating. Thank you.
I beg to differ. Many. Including most Americans, dont get the non obvious ones wrong. No one. Everyone. None etc. most speakers use the plural. Our mother taught us the rule about 'one'. Less and fewer is another one. Very few people use 'few', 'fewer' and then, of course, there is 'of' instead of 've' as in should've. Contraction of should have.

@@abdullahalsada4975 From the sentence you wrote, you are already good in English grammar 👍 You need to read more novels to learn the usage part of the language. But a little correction, '.. how I can start learning English.'

The topic choice is super helpful, thank you Ms.Rebecca. I have learned a great deal of proper grammar usage from your channel, and I truly appreciate your time and expertise. Can you address the difference between the words principal and principle? And each other and one another please. Thank you in advance.
Hey there. I'm not a language teacher but English is my first language so I thought I'd take a crack at answering your questions. The difference between principle and principal is that the first is a guiding rule, or ethic, whereas the second is a title. For example, you could say something like 'I always check my blind spot when changing lanes, even when I know there's no traffic. It's the principle of the thing'. A principal is usually used to refer to a school headmaster. However, you can also use it to mean primary, or most important. Such as 'the principal investors of this project are very concerned about its progress'. As for 'each other' versus 'one another', there is very little difference. They mean the same thing. Typically, however, you'd say 'each other' in less formal settings, and when specifically talking about two things. You could say, for example, 'the gunfighters drew in a flash and shot each other dead'. 'One another' is slightly more formal (a bit more stuffy), and can be used when talking about more general topics. For example: 'Reciprocation is very important in society; the way we treat one another determines the type of community we build'. Hope that helps.
Thanks for this really useful video. Please, I'd like to ask you a question about another confusing verb: TO SHIP. What i often hear people say is for example: "The package has shipped yesterday." Please, tell me if I'm wrong but i think that it should be: "The package was shipped yesterday". Just because the verb "to ship" is an active verb and here the subject doing the action cannot be the package. Hopefully you will take a little bit of your time to help us on this matter. Thanks again!
It depends whether the NOUN is singular or plural ??? It is so easy when you know !! Depends on whether you were taught by a teacher who was TRAINED IN ENGLISH or one who is just "shipped" in as a "stand-in" ????
Equipment is known as uncountable noun and should always use singular verb like is or was. Unless you modify it to “Three sets of equipment are broken.” Where 3 sets of equipment becomes one plural complete subject. Google can also provide more answers.

Some of the equipment are heavy. Reason being, some means a portion and equipment is in its plurality since we don't have equipments in English
