I'm used to hearing this with an American accent. I didn't expect to hear such a strong accent from that large a choir, speaks a lot for their precision
Well, it's just an accent as all singers in the choir are multilingual and entirely fluent in English. It's just South African English 😉
“Some nights I cool it a drooaw!”
@@zookuki yes, he is complementing the unity and precision of the choir be pointing out that you can actually hear their accent
@@eugenevorster8810 Me too. :) It's a lovely accent.
Some of it is also choir singing techniques. You round your vowels a lot more and change pronunciations just slightly compared to commercial singing.
I think Stellenbosch needs to start hosting concerts soon, it'd really be of great honor to watch the choir performing live on stage🥺🕯🕯🕯🕯
Honestly!
Definitely.

Agree
I'm at UCT and would watch every concert of stellenbosch had them
Props to the drummer holding back and perfectly placing every single hit with perfect volume
I wonder what animals would think if they heard a large choir of synchronized humans. Everyone’s voices twining together in harmony, the pure strength of it rumbling in your chest. Would they think they heard something unnatural? Eerie? Beautiful? Angelic even? Would they be hypnotized? Would they be scared? I’ve seen videos of animals listening to instruments. I wonder…
Just take catto to a community concert and find out
Curious if it’s like how us humans feel about wolves howling
Hmmm now u got me wondering....i wonder if they would stand listen like how cows do. U know that video of the guy play the Harp and the cows all come and start just stand and listen
#deep
I really like that idea. But I guess some of the animals will respond like some of the humans....
Some will be absolutely electrified by such incredible sounds and some thinks there are better ones..🤷😟
Why is no one talking about the conductor. His energy is so contagious
Well, he's the heart behind the choir... He sorta IS the choir.
Agreed. Have worked with him personally - an absolute gem of a human being. Andre van der Merwe ☀️
@@GiovanaSimmer Nail on the head right there! We're so blessed to have him!
Why don't you talk about it.
hes really good and actually really funny in real life
Compliments to the sound engineer (and team if applicable). This came across beautifully like any professional recording. Great choir, great conductor, great choice of song, great recording tech.
My thoughts exactly!!! The production crew should be congratulated.
I have ran sound (non-professionally) for 20 years and to get that was no simple feat. props to them
Agreed!
It impressed me greatly thanks a. Lot.
lol I was going to compliment the opposite - that strong compression on the whole mix combined with the over-powering bass drum meant that the choir was pumping in and out constantly, very distracting!
The smile from the conductor the way he's flowing with the choir, he's lovable
The mischievous little smiles on the choir prior to beginning. Just adorable!
Usually you do not hear the male voices in a mixed choir. But was really impressed by this choir. It is well balanced between male and female voices, and they fit together. Good work!
These guys are marvelous.
Am just wondering what the song "Sound of Silence" will be like with them
I hope they do it😭😭
YES that would be so good
I bet it’d be pretty quiet.
Jk it’d be good 😊
The Disturbed version would be amazing!
@@kaylynn4750 🤣😂
This is FIRE! Perfect! Well done!
thank you!
This choir is one of the best in the world. All these smiling young faces, shining and full of hope, black, white, blonde, dark, men, women singing with one voice in harmony. Wearing necklaces that speak of unity in plurality. The fact that you could bring down the walls of Apartheid, exist peacefully, and produce joyous songs, brings tears to me every time. I love you guys! What a great world this would be if everyone followed this example, sang together and smiled. You are beautiful, every one of you. Your conductor and musical director and orchestra musicians are fine people. The songs are excellent and so well executed. Live forever, choir of Stellenbosch! You are magnificent. Thank you for being the light in darkness. Greetings from California! ❣❣❣

Soweto Gospel choir is the best choir in the world
@@roblucci2366 That's debatable, both choirs are excellent each in their own uniquely different ways.
aye you had to be American, your brought race into it, your all obsessed with race
This isn't a performance, it's an experience.
When this song first came out, the original, I was serving in the American military. It became a bit of a personal anthem when I was in. This version adds some joy, some triumph to it that I could have used back then. Thank you all.
Good thing you are still here to listen to this version. Welldone.
Agree
American military? Wooow
And how it went?
Funny enough, the music video is set in the civil war. I haven't seen the video in forever but I still remember it
@@nandidamor2649 Best response to the statement ever!
I was not expecting that. At the first note my jaw dropped. What these guys (especially the conductor) did was absolutely amazing. The average person has no idea how hard it is to get a large group to sound so great, and acapella on top of that. Such precision. All the singers are fantastic, but without the drive and determination of the conductor all that talent would go to waste. What an accomplishment!
This is not acapella
@@yslantthai I'm guessing you don't know what acapella means.
@@jaynova1776 they had a drum…

You don't know how us Kenyans admire y'all S.African, Just Wow, 🇰🇪

I thought they're European or American.
This is honest-to-God better than the original. It gets the message across more effectively and also gives me chills. Incredible.
They sing with such precision. They are the Mercedes Benz of choirs 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽

THE WORLD!
I'm from Brazil and I love to listen this choir. You are amazing.
I love the subtle South African accent which comes through. Incredibly unique and special rendition of this song!
As a former chorister, I understand on a visceral level how technically difficult this must have been. Still pulled off with aplomb! Very well done!
Very true this so complicating to come with such a cream,,it really straining yooooooò
yohhh sooo truuu, i was a former chorister too 😩 misssing these memories and vibes
It's the conductor for me love him
Can we just talk about how they ALL nailed the runs EXACTLY- like I didn't hear one run that wasn't exactly like the original song
I disagree. They did extremely well, and I certainly could do no better. But I think the runs, especially around the 3:05 mark, sounded jumbled and took away from the otherwise flawless precision of the vocals.
@@Vanna8484 i think they were mimicking the ironic autotune in that part of the song were they not?
@@sandwhich8253 jupp, i also think so
This feels like greeting an old friend who has changed a good deal, yet when you get to talking, it's like the years since you last spoke have been minutes. ❤
I will come to SA just to watch you live...
no clue how I got here but this is a banger
I liked how they mimicked the original singer’s vocal cadence via different ranges chiming in at different times
Bumping into my favorite song sung like this has never been this rewarding.
I've sung in some choirs, but the finish, precision, balance, accuracy (eg timing), detail - incredible. Ok, back then we didn't have microphones, just echoey church halls (UK - outside = rain), and we were kids. But seriously amazing, addictive. I normally hate 'classic' versions of pop songs, which is what i think this was originally, but i love, will keep & share this
You don't need microphones in churches. Those echoey church halls are usually the best place to sing because of the accoustics
Yeah... I'm really picky about choirs singing pop songs, but this blew me away. Amazingly well done. i miss my high school choir now.
Was an awesome experience singing in this choir! So lucky and blessed to have been able to take part! Will miss all of you!
Truly the best choir Ever! Love you USK
@willem swartz you were part of the percussion team....right??
@@pablofuck yes, I was!
One of my favorites at the moment, good job to you and everyone in the choir
All of you were amazing!!! Best of luck to you!!
Any relation to Devonecia?
The hand coordination when clapping is just purely awesome.
In the brief silence before the percussion I thought “how are they gonna do the drums?” And MY GOD THE SYNCRONISED CLAPPING 👏🏼 !!!
I sold my soul for this...
Suddenly this song makes sense to me, musically speaking. This is the way it's supposed to sound.
Much love from Nigeria ♥️
i think this is the best version I've ever heard of this. IMO this is one of those songs MADE for a choir group.
Makes me proud to study abroad there.
A university choir with so much talent brings me to this. Members are constantly graduating every year and going forth with their futures, yet their voices continue to be one voice. Such understated talent was a joy for me to find. Having been a member of 4 separate choirs, none can compare to you.
And surprising is that majority of them aren't music majors. They come from all disciplines.

THIS, FOR ME, IS THE VOICE OF THE REAL SOUTH AFRICA!!!!!!
One of the best choirs in the world. As a choral singer myself, I can say from experience that the level of collective skill that it takes to create music this beautiful is something that, unfortunately, I'm not sure a non-experienced listen could fathom, but just know, the skill is legendary.
I can only imagine what this sounded in person. It’s so good!
This is perhaps the best thing I’ve seen on the internet this year. South Africa is really amazing. Just launched 3 satellites today alone.

This is so beautiful 😁😁😢 day made
I still don’t know what I stand for.
I’m 54 and only now I hear this.
Time has got the best of me.
Mine are hopes that failed, not sure what they were anyway.
Naïveté is no answer
For the foolish tricks I’ve played
I’ve done my deeds of disaster
But now it’s time I’m on my way.
I still don’t know what I stood for anyway.
Makes me totally speechless, such a beautifully singing choir!

So thrilling. I've watched this video a thousand times
This popped up in my recommended page and my jaw is on the ground
As a choir person myself, this makes me miss my choir and attending choir. Such beautiful harmonies and even melodies in their respective parts. I felt so happy to hear the voices together. Brought a sense of joy and motivation. Thank you for this wonderful video! 🌟🌟🌟

i love this best one i seen yet
are we going to talk about there vowels?!?!? and the harmony and rounds are amazing!!!!
im a 6th grade vocal major at BAK and cant wait for our choir to sound like that bye the end of the year. and it must have taken so much practice to keep your hands down and not itch at all the entire time, and the around sound is awsome!
Andre Van Der Merwe deserves a Nobel Prize in Music for what he's done to this choir
This is easily one of the best choirs - if not the best choir - I have heard and I would love to see them live one day. Stay strong, stay safe and thank you!
The coordination is super
The clarity of the diction is amazing, and the precision it adds to the rhythm is just so energizing.
A sound like this can raise the dead!

I participated in choirs for a half-century.
Hats off to the director.
I adore choir and miss it during my first year in college after doing it for 11 years. What stood out most was the genius decision to have groups clap, because everyone clapping is usually overpowering no matter how much you explain what quiet clapping is.😂
Beautiful Beautiful 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
If Fun could listen to this they will be so amazed ❤
Just love how every member of this choir looks like they're having the time of their lives.
AMAZING!! In awe of the fact that with a group of young university students who are constantly moving on and out, they are still able to achieve this level of harmony and beautiful blending😍
We are stilling here, what a wonderfull 😮😮😮
It's so wild looking at the style everyone sings. Some people are rocking some and using hands and moving to the rhythm, some are standing perfectly still concentrating, and some are just slightly moving their head. Either way, they all sound amazing.
The arrangement is outstanding...much love from Kenya

I cannot stop listening to this song! Legit I’ve been playing this nonstop for days. Would you ever consider covering Africa by Toto? I would die of happiness!
You can tell that this choir has been carefully and intentionally directed to fit the vision of the director, and that this has been practiced often. This is very well done and the choir sounds great together.
