Mattel of Japan actually made it by surprise, it just never went any further than well, what we already see. Also, most characters DO have pets in the series, they just never really had a focus in the series (other than some later episodes) and were mostly exclusive to characters' basic dolls! ^^ And Lagoona putting on moisturizer was based on her doll bio where she does have to regularly put on moisturizer (granted not nearly as often as she did in the anime), I recommend going through the MH wiki and reading at least every characters' basic bio that came with their dolls! You'd be surprised how much of it never showed up in the mainline series-

they've had the same pets since they first released in 2010 all of the original first wave dolls came with them & they've been featured in some of the web series
The trick to making 3D models look 2D is by matching the frame rate. It's all in the movement. Just align the 2D assets to the movement of the 3D models and you get a smoother outcome that appears 'seamless'. They really did a good job with that
The pets for the ghouls were always a part of the original they came with the signature dolls of the characters. But not all characters came with pets though due to the character not having one or due to Mattel not wanting to produce a pet for them, for example, the character River from the movie “haunted” her pet crow was going to be with her but Mattel decided against it. The reason you probably never noticed the pets is due to their rare appearances in the webisodes.
Using 3d animation to flesh out scenes in 2d anime is a really great tactic! AKB0048, Pretty Rhythm, and Aikatsu all do a really great job using 3d scenes.
Magical Girl Monster High anime would be cool to see. They're not humans who turn into monsters but Monsters who get cool magical outfits. I think it'd be stylish and cute
Lagoona explains in her diary that she spends the whole day applying lotion to keep moist so I actually love that they used that. Also the pets are canon and even appeared in the series and with the original dolls.
The pets have always existed, they came with the first edition dolls of the main ghouls, they appeared a couple of times in the original websodes and also had their own toy line around 2014 called Secret Creepers, you could talk about that in another video! :)
I watched this when it first came out, but I think the Lagoona quirk was actually part of the book series? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember in one of the books it discusses that Lagoona has to stay moisturized and constantly has to rub lotion into her skin and I thought this was a nice, niche touch.
Oh I discovered this anime when I was little. Looking back on it now, I think that was my first time learning Japanese culture for my younger self. Amazing video though! 🤗
The pets are actually little figures that come with each character's signature doll! And the new G3 versions are very Littlest Pet Shop-esque. Also I feel like this show was basically made entirely based on the characters' original bios? Things like Lagoona constantly putting on lotion and Clawdeen flirting with boys seem like exaggerated details from those, as well as the sweet 1600 and Abbey plotlines.
The pets actually surprised me cause despite coming with the dolls they hardly EVER appeared in the western webisodes. They only started appearing after Jane boolittle was introduced cause she had the ability to speak to animals. So having them show up right at the start surprised me!
Actually, i think they did end up making doll versions of the pets I remember buying Frankie, Clawdeen and Draculaura's pets from my local home bargains years ago
Other than Licca-chan fashion dolls don't sell very well in Japan, that's why Precure only had figures for a long time, only in recent years they started making fashion dolls again, also, I don't know if it counts as a web anime since it aired on Ohastar, but I assume it didn't last very long because Monster High was too Western to appeal to Japanese girls despite the efforts to make it more Japanese, seems to be a common fate for American doll lines there
Something about the way the school background looks and and the style of the anime gives me those old RPG horror games like Misao or maybe Mad Father vibes so now i'm positive I need a monster high horror game in that style and I think it would be fantastic.
The funny this is that the anime version of Monster High introduced to the world of Monster High. It happens when I was looking for Rosario+Vampire and stumbled on this. Despite being very different to the original MH, I still like it.
If I was in charge of a Monster High anime, the first thing I'd do is have the worldbuilding make sense and be consistent. And then I'd have some episodes that would go into the backstories of all the main girls and their home life. Not as the very first episodes, of course. But I've just always been wanting a bit of a deep dive into the lore of the characters. Like, Ghoulia Yelps. She was born a zombie and I'm not sure how that works but I wanna know more.
I wish they continued the anime. Its cute, well animated and entertaining. My favorite version of monster high so far, other than the og animated web series.
Anime usually focuses a lot on emotions and mentality. They give physical form to psychological trauma or dreams. I think it would've been cool to have an overarching plotline where a yokai-themed monster is haunting the school. However, it's focused on the individual dreams and nightmares of each student. In this case, maybe a yokai that enters dreams (like a kitsune) and spreads nightmares around the school. The motive would probably be something dark; kitsunes live for a long time (and only certain monsters seem to be immortal age-wise) so she might be pretty lonely. Each student's nightmare/dream is about an aspect of life they're concerned about and in the waking world they work together to overcome their fears. In doing this, when they finally confront her, they can relate to her with their experiences. That while she may live longer than most of the people she'll meet, it's okay to become friends with them. She doesn't have to settle down, but she can make the moments count.
As a huge Anime fan I really love this. It’s a bit wacky and makes me nostalgic for something like Super Gals. I would have loved a whole Anime for Monster High just filled with off the wall randomness.
The lotion thing for Lagoona is funny because if you read G1 lagoona's dairy it mentions her always putting on lotion. Its also her freaky flaw that she goes through so much lotion. I wish the American series touched more on her flaw thats prominent in the dolls dairy.
The original dolls did come with pets! I remember my lagoona and frankie came with that fish in the fishbowl/bag and the dog. I’m Australian/live in Australia so I’d assume we had the same ones that were in America as well so I’m not sure why they wouldn’t have been included in the online series:/
Personally love this because I’m an anime fan and a monster high fan and I felt like they did a great job of making the characters more Japanese while still maintaining some of their core personalities (minus Lagoona, who I actually like here too because she fits the cute ditz trope in anime that I have a soft spot for). I will say it was weird having their outfits from different films like Scaris and Sweet 1600 just randomly thrown into different scenarios but that’s because I already know the movies by heart. All in all I like it for what it is but I agree if this was a full series I’d hate it. It was perfect for some cute marketing but if they were to really make a proper MH anime I’d expect better animation and more dedication to the original source material.
Tbh I actually liked it, sometimes it's fun to just have something whimsical and silly, that doesn't take itself so seriously every now and again. It also reminded me of older anime tropes I kinda miss weirdly enough 🤣
If I were tasked with the Monster High anime, I would have it follow the student exchange program stint they had, wherein Draculaura went to school in Shibooya, Japan. The school she went to mainly showed vampires, as such I would make it that the school is transitioning to a multi-monster school and the main cast, would follow a non-vampire monster (maybe a tengu for some contrast with a haughty person from the ‘other side’), another vampire (so we can get some perspective from the dominant force), a kitsune (‘cause I like Yu Yu Hakusho and a calm, collected character like Kurama would make for a good balance) and some other monsters. Kiyomi can appear later on after the events of Haunted.
Honestly I remember myself searching a theme song of MH but in different language & I found this series & never knew this was made by mattel themselves
Looked into the staff behind this and apparently nabeshin directed this? The excel saga/ the wallflower guy? I thought “that doesn’t sound right” but sure enough he shows up in an episode as clawdeen’s human boyfriend lol

I just have a vague memory of some websites revolving around some new girl too afraid of socialization so she hides in the school sewers or something and all the pets are there for some reason and apparently nobody knew of their existience
Monster high did have toys made for the pets in the US they were called secret creepers you can find the commercials on UA-cam but I think that the toys themselves aren't being sold anymore
my favourite thing as an avid ghoulia fan is her entire thing being collapsing, not only because it makes sense considering she is a zombie, but because of how incredibly relatable it is as someone who is constantly fatigued!!
Honestly I'm good with it being its own Individual separate entity. Imagine the anime style dolls would have gotten I'd be in for that and I don't think I'd make it longer I'd keep it at the TikTok shorts.
I thought you would bring up the fact that Clawdeen was texting with a human boy in one episode... They're really shorts cute but it's hard to figure out what demographic they were aiming for.
I believe Shin'ichi Watanabe (Nabeshin) directed it. I recognized a style similar to his in a Sailor Moon Super S episode and looking for information to check if i was right, I found out he had worked on the Monster High anime instead. That's the same guy who directed Excel Saga. If you know, you know. (God i am such a fokin weeb)
The pets weren't a thing unique to this anime, pretty much every monster has a unique one and usually there would be a figure of the pet that came with the default doll for a character
Hey, monster high actually had an ever after high crossover movie planned as well. They never made it but they did put the storyboard & pre-recorded voice acting on their UA-cam channel. I'd think you'd be interested in checking them out
I pretty sure that the lotion thing that lagoona do is a call back from the Monster High Novels! I read them a while ago but i remember that lagoona (who have a diferent name in the books if a remember correctly, at least in the spanish version) always use lotion because thei skin whaa always dry and was worried that humans could tell she is a monster (in the books they go to a human school and the whole monster thing is a huge secret)
THE PETS EXISTED THE WHOLE TIME...they were just pretty much immediately abandoned in the main series!! Also, everyone else has a largely unchanged design but Cleo?? Why does she have both a whole new outfit AND different hair??
Already had a bit of that experience with the reboot, but if i could do anime instead. I would love recruiting Nakajima Atsuko, and re-embrace a type of artsy gothic image for Monster high. I would also, ride with my own lore/spin for it. Probably have it semi-story, slice of life, and if i had the freedom. Go into more serious topics, but keeping done classy. Use some G1 lore, and cross it with some other anime inspo. Because as the style is now, it works for the American format, but i would love to go in a super ornate level with just jaw dropping imagery.
You should review Little Charmers. I was obsessed with that show years ago. Was on nick Jr. Watched it with my little cousin and actually found myself watching it alone xD
I found it funny you mentioned the pets looking like littest pet shop yet didnt mention g3’s dolls-the pets litrealy look like edgy ver of littest pet shop lol Also was haunt countre inspired by this?? Cause the fashion check sagement looks alot like the boxes the dolls come in Abby continues to reign supreme as useal
I think the anime would be best if the stars of the series went to Nippon as exchange students and met some of the yokais there. I think that would be great.
I came here because of the UA-cam algorithm, I don't know too much about monster high, but I am a watcher of esoteric anime. The fact that you found the series to short is an expectation of a full TV show season worth , when in reality this a common format for modern Japanese animators to allow to do small projects and experiment with concepts, where it's deemed too risky to try in a full production project series. So anime web shorts are a thing since around 2013-2014. The web shorts scope is 3-15 eps long, and each episode is either 3min, 5min, or 8min long. The project team is usually 1-10 people big, and the team is either hire freelancers brought on to the project team just for the project and the disbanded, or the Mattel company offices contract out the animation to a sub-studio in the animation industry which consists of up and coming animators working up to the main studio team where their more experienced senpai s work at. There are many anime web shorts out there, there is on for the Sanrio characters one of who is Hello kitty; a comedy short Wooser series, like Dilbert comics but cute characters, Asuka-chan web shorts is experimental anime where the animation studio tried to make a series but had to keep it short due to small budget than most normal projects. And (Disney's Fireball TV series)Android Doll web shorts about two robots talking about long since extinct humans.
Imagine a monster high shonen anime with like action and a plot oh my God I would die of laughter but I would be into it the idea of it is so funny but awesome kind of when you think about it
Funny enough, these anime shorts were my introduction to Monster High. 😂 I saw the commercials, but the reason I kinda decided to check out the series is because I was REALLY into anime and enjoyed the anime shorts of this.
nendroids are very popular in Japan. Nendroids use snap on parts to pose the doll. For example, one are may have food in it while another looks like it's waving. It's easier to explain if you see it for yourself. I would suggest Google for pictures or UA-cam for videos. However typically, nendroids are the chibi (small & cutely drawn) versions of characters. I'm not sure what the non-chibi nendroids are called. But because nendroids are popular with their stupid amounts of tiny parts is probably why the company behind (forgot their name, so sorry) Monster High had those plans for their Japanese dolls; it'd raise their profit margins.
Lagoona using a lot of lotion to stay moisturized was actually her freaky flaw in her original bio, which is why I found it so funny they actually used that info as a gag lol

Yeah Clawdeen is super cute in more rendition of Monster High she appears in, I guess it’s because she’s a wolf girl maybe.
I've been meaning to watch this. Had no idea it was so short!
Monster high did have toys made for the pets in the US they were called secret creepers you can find the commercials on UA-cam but I think that the toys themselves aren't being sold anymore
Why have I never heard of this before
my favourite thing as an avid ghoulia fan is her entire thing being collapsing, not only because it makes sense considering she is a zombie, but because of how incredibly relatable it is as someone who is constantly fatigued!!
There was a monster high anime… There is an anime for everything is true!!!
I always heard about it but couldn’t find it either.
Oh yeah I remember that and I also thought it was a fanmade. And it was really great to watched that time but I'm sad that it only have 8 episodes.
4:55 Oh wait? It's lotion? I thought it's water. She always wiping her face so that her skin keeps hydrated. I just know it, just now.
The anime kill la kill, has 3d animation blended in that is so insanely godly you could watch it 20 times and not pick up on it
Hey, monster high actually had an ever after high crossover movie planned as well. They never made it but they did put the storyboard & pre-recorded voice acting on their UA-cam channel. I'd think you'd be interested in checking them out
clawdeens episode was my favorite! So hilarious and second was Cleo’s, I laughed to so hard watching these. I wish they made more of them.
I’m surprised more people didn’t know about this. I saw the commercial as a kid on UA-cam
I legit yelled when I saw you posted about this even tho I already know everything lmao
I heard that this anime was directed by Shinichi Watanabe, the guy who directed Excel Saga
I only found out about the anime about a month ago when I saw someone put the japanese and english intros over each other and went wait… what???
Already had a bit of that experience with the reboot, but if i could do anime instead. I would love recruiting Nakajima Atsuko, and re-embrace a type of artsy gothic image for Monster high. I would also, ride with my own lore/spin for it. Probably have it semi-story, slice of life, and if i had the freedom. Go into more serious topics, but keeping done classy. Use some G1 lore, and cross it with some other anime inspo. Because as the style is now, it works for the American format, but i would love to go in a super ornate level with just jaw dropping imagery.
I really need to say this,YOU LOOK SO PRETTY
You should review Little Charmers. I was obsessed with that show years ago. Was on nick Jr. Watched it with my little cousin and actually found myself watching it alone xD
I found it funny you mentioned the pets looking like littest pet shop yet didnt mention g3’s dolls-the pets litrealy look like edgy ver of littest pet shop lol
Also was haunt countre inspired by this?? Cause the fashion check sagement looks alot like the boxes the dolls come in
Abby continues to reign supreme as useal
I- Wow you just made my day❤
Imagine a monster high shonen anime with like action and a plot oh my God I would die of laughter but I would be into it the idea of it is so funny but awesome kind of when you think about it
Funny enough, these anime shorts were my introduction to Monster High. 😂 I saw the commercials, but the reason I kinda decided to check out the series is because I was REALLY into anime and enjoyed the anime shorts of this.
I have that exact Manga drawing book
Gen 1 had pets! They came with each doll I swear they used to!
Just wanted to say the ad right after talking about lagoona moisturizing was an ad for lotion for me lol
what
i haven't heard of monster high for years, and now i get slapped in the face with THIS!??!
sweet.
Monster High did have a pet line! I think it was called Secret Creepers.
this was what really got me into monster high! lagoona is so cute
I WOULD ALSO DIE FOR A COLLAB WITH LPS AND MONSTER HIGH, THEY WERE BOTH MY CHILDHOOD AHH and I'm still obsessed with both XD
I ! REMEMBER! THE PETS !!! They weren't really in the show but they were in the magazines!! (wich I was obsessed with) and i loved them !!
totally gonna watch this, it looks adorable!
As a fan I love this just as much as the webasiodes!! and yes they've always had pets, the anime seems to use them more is all
This is cool. In fact, the anime got the monster mythos correctly compared to 'Western Monster High'. I'd take this over Monster Musume. *shudders*
hey could you do a video on "Monster High The Lost Movie" and a video on "Monster High/Ever After High: The Legend of Shadow High" please
Monster High did have an anime in Japan but the language they speak are only in Japanese so there weren't any english dubbed at all.
nendroids are very popular in Japan.
I remember watching this over the summer, and it felt like a weird fever dream.
i loved the monster high anime! also they did have pets in the original/basic dolls!
You never knew they had pets?
I think they did release monster high pets but they were sold separately because I had Frankie's dog up until 6th grade because my dog ate it.
Legit right after you were talking about how Lagoona needs to put on lotion all the time, I got an ad for lotion-
Oh yeah I remember this now. I completely forgot that they made an anime version of monster high
