Okaaayy... I liked this pilot way more than the actual first episode and I think this fills a lot of plot holes of the show, I like that it was showed that Luz was actually bullied and not just let it implayed and I think the world building and the magic looks more interesting and appealing.
I agree. I also love how it was set up more than the first episode we got. If only we got this in the final it probably would’ve set things better. Idk that’s just what I think. I love the idea of Amity being the human world, and it just sounds way more interesting to me and would’ve set things up more with her family on why they sent her away. And I love Lilith being the head master and again, sounds way more interesting with the way she would’ve run the school. I’m just ranting at this point lol.
Also I wish they kept in that three eyed character. She could’ve been comedy gold. Like, she could’ve been such an iconic character. Though do you think that maybe the character could possibly be an alpha or beta version of Boscha?
That is interesting. So in this version, portals weren't hard to come by and there were multiple other dimensions. And travelling through the portal doors is an everyday thing, too. This would've DRASTICALLY changed basically all of seasons 2 and 3 in the final show
Since the chest gem thingy is a Emperor thing in this version and the portal key came from it, I'm sure they're highly regulated and still near impossible to come by if you're not working for the Emperor (That is if Amity's parents still work for him in this version, giving her access to the human world). Most likely Eda would "betray" the Emperor and loose the gem thingy and their way to the human world before season 1 ends and making a part of season 2 still be about the Owl crew trying to gain back access to portal technology minus Belos trying too as well since he already does. Belos hating humans would still change things drastically.
Yeah the basic the old plot seemed to be that the emperor ( not belos and not evil) is stuck as a pupa and not able to communicate so there a council that speaks for him which is controlled by a shady masked dude (proto-belos, even made the coven system) who wants posses the titan body and take over the demon and human realm but he needs a human soul to accomplish his goals which is why he's after luz ( even though there another human named Williams who shares a familial connection with him and was born in the 19th century)
Wow…not gonna lie, I kinda prefer this over the actual first episode. The jokes land some more, the “weirdos sticking together” moral was handled less on the nose here & there’s some more plot set up. I’m guessing some of the changes were due to Disney higher up interfaces. Like the higher ups wanted more episodic stuff compared to plot & they prefer more on the nose messaging. Getting that impression based on how some of the other Disney cartoons were. I guess that explains why Amphibia had a hefty amount of episodic episodes, resulting in it being critiqued for not having enough plot episodes & too much “filler”. And wow, the amount of differences compared to the final show! Lilith being more of a baddie & Hexide principal? Amity secretly studying in the human world & meeting Luz there first? Eda’s (& Lilith’s) ability to transform being less of a curse & more of a ability? And Eda secretly working for the Emperor? I’m curious to see how the plot would have went with this set up. Fanfic writers & fan comic drawers get to it!
Dana did say that the show really didn't feel like it belonged to her until like episode 15, which explains why half of season 1 is episodic, it was Disney's doing
That is standard issue broadcasting preferences. An episodic first season with the second being less constrainted in structure. Plus… you kinda need episodic shenanigans to establish the setting’s base foundation. Get us in a casual vibe before ramping it up. Frankly, Amphibia was good at this. We care about Wartwood’s citizens in Season 3 in the war because we got to know them in Season 1 as simple country folk.
Amity going to Luz’s school is such a fun twist, and it hasn’t been confirmed yet cuz I don’t see her ears, but the fact that Luz probably found the demon realm is because of her adds so much interest to their dynamic

The locker thing defo made more sense to me than that weird glowing barrier that no one but a human could get through? Rewatching the final pilot ep, that weird, not really logical plot point kinda took me out of the lore for a hot sec.
@@kimberlylandeck8663 i guess so? it's definitely funnier this way, with the crown being trapped inside some "ancient human tech" or whatever, and that eda and king are too comedically stupid to just like... magic it open or something lol. i don't know that it necessarily makes more sense though HAHA
@@kmmk5022 A trilogy. One where Luz gets Eda to teach her. A second where she goes to Hexside. A third where the Day of Unity occurs (under different circumstances). The Hexside one could have Hunter there as an undercover operative. Likely as a test by Belos to see if his conditioning is solid to not betray him this time. That and an expansion on the Grom.
This would've definitely been a very interesting alternative-Luz and Amity meeting right off the bat and having Amity's soft side shown _before_ her bratty side, along with Luz going to the Isles because of Amity; widespread interdimensional travel; Lilith being a teacher, having a beast form at the start rather than getting one from sharing Eda's curse, it being a bat rather than a raven, _and_ her being able to control it, along with getting thrown into another dimension; Eda actually having a connection to the Emperor's Coven, albeit a likely-unwilling one... Not sure how this version would've played out compared to the version we got, but it's definitely an interesting little oddity. I'd love to hear about their original plans for the show when they made the pilot, and where they wanted the story to go.
1:05 if only they added that in the actual first episode. It would’ve made sense as to why she only had the head of her Azura doll when she gave King the dolls crown!
Alex's voice is littered all throughout this video, 6:43 that guy is so clearly just Stan! I can also hear a lot of lines/takes (like Hooty's) reused in the actual episode 1. You can also hear Dana at 10:33 and 17:56 subbing in for King and Eda.
I think at 20:35 it's also Dana saying "What's going on?! What's gotten into you?!" I love these little lines by her, i wonder if she had voiced the entire thing before giving it to the voice actors
@@treebitThat doesn’t sound like her. Eda seems to be voiced by Wendie and whoever voiced her in the Next Time Reel depending on the scene. That line sounds like it came from the latter VA.
Honestly, this is straight up better than the actual first episode. Like when I first saw it, I thought The Owl House wasn’t that good, but this pilot intrigued me immediately.
17: 00 They just used the Mighty Eagle scream from Angry Birds This whole concept feels a lot smoother than the og pilot. It is nice seeing the emperor brought up so early, and using Lilith this early too feels like a good set up for her character. I do have some gripes. I kind of feel the whole show ignored the theme of learning how to find balance between fantasy and reality for the theme of "Weirdos stick together". I also don't know how to feel about demon realm residents being allowed to go to the human realm and why it is encouraged if humans are seen as lesser. Maybe they were sticking to the idea of Belos wanting to invade after all and these people were encouraged to go as heroes, braving new territory for the Isles. Maybe they weren't planning for Belos to be a witch hunter.
I'm wondering if this version of Belos would have been similar to Amon from Legend of Korra (human posing as a witch and fostering hatred between the two worlds to build power)
@@jamesbevan9939 The series bible got leaked too and Belos isn't actually in this! They have an Emperor Pupa, a literal cocoon whose will is divined by three councilors implied to be keeping the cocoon from ever hatching while using the emperor's otherwise unfathomable will as their authority.
Omg?? Eda working with Emperor Belos in this premise is so interesting! The thing with her gem shocking her if she lies and the bird-guy also having a gem makes me think she’s potentially unwillingly working with Emperor Belos? Maybe she wasn’t always unwilling to work with him? Ooohhh so many questions!! It’s also so cool how Eda seems to have control over her owl ability. Seems like in this premise she either just has it as her sort of cool thing, or it’s still a curse and she just has more control over it? I hope somebody makes something out of this premise, like a comic or fanfic or some kind of script-audio-reading thing!
Actually, the intent wasn't for it to be Belos; it was going to be "Emperor Pupa", an insectoid creature trapped in its cocoon whose council "speaks" for him - meaning they just lie and say what they want is "the Emperor's will". The actual prototype for Belos was Councilor Obron (secretly a human hundreds of years old who trapped Emperor Pupa in the cocoon so he could create the Coven System and control witches).
This feels like how Season 2/3 would have written the pilot, which says a lot about Disney's meddling in season 1. Dana wasn't lying during the hiatus when she said season 2 was closer to her original vision.
Although the Pilot is amazing and shows how dark Dana wanted the series to be, there are some things that I didn't like with it. 1. The fact that the enthusiasm to become a witch that Luz had in the final version wasn't really there, and it was more like she was "stuck" in the Demon Realm like Eda said. I'm glad that this was added in the final version because that enthusiasm was shown throughout the entire season, and we could see how much Luz wanted to be a witch. 2. Amity being a key part to Luz discovering the Demon Realm doesn't make a lot of sense. Even if this would add more sense for Lumity, this show is partly about believing in yourself to acheive great things, and in the final version, her Azura book is the representation of Luz's passion. Owlbert stealing her book and leading her to the Demon Realm makes more sense because from a viewer's perspective, this would mean that her passion led her to what she wanted, and that her walking through the portal seemed less accidental. In the pilot, we kind of see that it's completely accidental. 3. In my opinion, Lilith and Eda's transformations are a bit weird and a little bit disturbing. I think that the concept of the curse of the Owl Beast is much better because it adds a lot more to Eda and Lilith's character development. There are also some things that are in the pilot bible that are, in my opinion, a bit worse than the final version, like the fact that the Emperor was supossed to be "Emperor Pupa" instead of Belos. And I might be wrong, but based on the description, the fact that the Emperor is human doesn't seem to be a thing, and in my opinion, Belos being human was an amazing plot. What I like with the Pilot is that we kind of see how Luz was treated in the Human Realm. So, I wouldn't say that the pilot is better than the final version, but not worse either. A mix of the Pilot and Episode 1 would be amazing.
I agree, I also give credit to the final version with the plot of Eda and her curse, Camila being a very important character in the development of Luz from the beginning and the connection that Luz's book represents and thanks to him we had the beginning of Amity's friendship, the reason why she wants to be a heroine as Azura is in her own way and the background of how she got that book thanks to his father's last gift 😢
Emperor Pupa wasn't even proto-Belos, he was the thing proto-Belos claimed to speak for in place of the Titan. Councilor Obron was the actual proto-Belos, and he was still going to be human / a witch hunter, with William (proto-Hunter) being blood related to him rather than a clone of someone blood related.
Having Amity visit the Human world beforehand is interesting, but yeah it is not a good sole motivator for Luz to be on the Boiling Isles. Especially since the Pilot hints that they rarely interacted until now.
As much as I love Lumity, I’m actually glad they changed how Luz gets to the Demon realm. It just feels more meaningful that she find it by chasing after her Azure book, something her father loved and gave to her before he died. That book was a way she connected to her father beyond his death. By following the book into The BI, it’s almost like he was leading her there, to the place where she would find love and acceptance 😢
the actual real image of dancers on the tv and the guy just being flipped back and forth is kill me ToT i love this oh they switched the joke from around 10:00!! thats cool WOW and the END? edas working for the emperor against her will? thats sick!! so cool so see the other ideas they went through on the way to making the show!!
I like the final direction of the show, but I won’t lie that isolating just the pilot here to episode one, this episode is much stronger in establishing character motives and dynamics. And King is much more likable off the bat, where as it took me a while to warm up to him in the final version.
Bro The OG Pilot had more interesting things and events than the original episode we got, Ngl I rate this a 9/10 overall I enjoyed it there was more people, and good first expressions and etc.
I do prefer a few of the changes they made in the final version, mainly Luz choosing to stay, rather than being forced to as I feel it was more impactful for Luz’s character and of course led to her heroic sacrifice of the portal at the end of season one and provided many plot points in season two, but it was really interesting to see how this originally played out.
This version of the pilot is better! Everyone's motivations work a lot better here, and it makes the actual pilot feel incomplete or overedited by comparison. Eda's curse makes a lot more sense as a method of control for the Emperor, instead of being a random scroll from the Collector. The only thing is, this probably would have been too much for a first episode. It set up so many plot points when most networks want more casual adventures, and they didn't know if the show would last long enough to pay off these plot points.
I guess that explains the recurring critique of season one being too episodic. The Disney higher ups appear to have wanted the show to be that way. At least season 2 & beyond they were able to be more story driven. Maybe those claims of fans saying Dana wanted the plot to go at that pace is kinda true.
@@svgaming263 Yeah that's not what I meant though. It makes more sense for Belos to be involved with the curse instead of the Collector, so they can use it for dramatic tension. The rest of the storyline still works; now Lilith got the scroll from Belos, but still didn't know the effects would be permanent. Belos still promises to reverse the curse but goes back on his promise. And Eda gets free of Belos's control by learning to coexist with the Owl Beast and claiming the power for her own. This make Belos a more personal enemy to the owl family, which is sorely needed since his history is intertwined with Eda's ancestors and we barely got to explore that.
I always felt the pilot was the weakest episode. And this furthers that. We see way more of Luz here and understand why she dislikes earth so much. She was a forgetful, outcasted goofball. Amity actually stands up for her which is why she’s so eager to be friends. And her relationship with Eda starts out stronger.
@@kmmk5022 I’m sure it was initially. Dana said a lot was cut because of the shortening. I’m estimating we were supposed to get the same amount of earth eps as Amphibia.
@@LaissezFairyWritermaybe she should’ve just split the episodes in like episode A and B and have 2 eleven minute episodes. Also I wish they kept in the 3 eyed character. She could’ve been comedy gold. Like she could’ve been a very iconic character Though do you think she could possibly be like an early version of Boscha
@@kmmk5022 I thought that too. But I think they didn’t do it for two reasons: 1. Disney wanted the show to be different from Amphibia aka 22 min vs 11 min segments and 2. it would be much harder albeit impossible to convey the same content without the full runtime. Imagine Hollow mind as an 11 min ep. Yup, the final version definitely prettied up a lot of characters and creatures. Such a shame too. I really like the creepy, horrific monsters. But I guess that’s to be expected on Disney.
See, this is how you write good angst. We actually see how the real world has hurt Luz in this pilot. Being bullied by her peers in school, presumably still having her imagination squashed by her mother, and now getting her heart broken by Amity when she sees her again. Add to that her mentor working for Belos and perhaps the fact she’s the reason Belos rose to power, and you’ve got a tragic storyline to make Pink Floyd’s The Wall look like a standup comedy sketch.
20:21- 20:39 genuinely made me tear up a bit like the episode really made me feel bad for Luz about her art and when EDA saw it I thought she would say a snarky joke about it but say it was fine BUT SHES SAYS “This is beautiful, why would anyone throw this away” and it shocked me a little the way that the line was said and the music shift during the line was but so cute and wholesome at one point I felt like that when it came to my singing performances so seeing Eda valid Luz’s art and calling gorgeous after Amity called it trash was very much needed THIS IS SO DAMN CUTE (I low-key love this pilot more more than the actual one but it made me more concerned about how to build Amity and Luz’s relationship-)

EXACTLY. Pacing is super important, even in a show that hasn’t received a public reaction/response to it, and that’s why I like the final pilot version better (but I wish they kept in the locker part. It makes much more sense than a HUGE ASS BARRIER that only a human can get through? Like, that part kinda took me out of the world for a hot sec rewatching the pilot after the first two seasons in.)
amity was there from the begging as well i love it, and shes an exchange student oh wow if this was part of the story we got i think people would of loved it more, i see some of the early bully amity is there, the bully persona she gives of till she cracks and my god that ending it makes me want to watch more of it, netflix buy it of disney and make this a film....oh no...iv gotta watch it again from the start ffs this is like the 100th time
Honestly overall this is a better pilot than the one we got. What we got leaned WAY too hard into the "Weirdos stick together" stuff. Also Lilith's intro here is fun and a bit better than the warden who took her place. And I LOVE that Amity is more involved with Luz ending up in the boiling isles but it seems like the "Human exchange student" thing had to go away with the idea that travel between dimensions wasn't common and was instead rare. And Bellos hated humans in this? I wonder what the original plans for him were probably wasn't even Phillip.
It's always interesting seeing how many of the pilot VAs carry over to the final production. Both because of the skill of the VAs that they got a call back into the booth and also because you'd expect more temp VAs and placeholder audio for a pilot.
Aw man, I wish they had somehow found a way to keep that scene where Eda looks at the drawing and compliments it in the final product, because that's so sweet!! I also love that Eda has some kind of affiliation with the Emperor in the pilot, it would have made for big big plot twists.

This would've DRASTICALLY changed basically all of seasons 2 and 3 in the final show
Someone needs to write a fanfic of the owl house based on the pilot
Yeah it felt more like monster inc. Where the doors where used for work and other things
And that Luz came to the Boiling Isles because of Amity and not Owlbert.
I agree
@@ajay.adr2Where did she say that, again? Was it on a livestream or something?
That is standard issue broadcasting preferences. An episodic first season with the second being less constrainted in structure.
Plus… you kinda need episodic shenanigans to establish the setting’s base foundation. Get us in a casual vibe before ramping it up.
Frankly, Amphibia was good at this. We care about Wartwood’s citizens in Season 3 in the war because we got to know them in Season 1 as simple country folk.

@@treebitThat doesn’t sound like her. Eda seems to be voiced by Wendie and whoever voiced her in the Next Time Reel depending on the scene. That line sounds like it came from the latter VA.
I wouldn’t have minded if this show began this approach because this rocks too
Honestly, this is straight up better than the actual first episode. Like when I first saw it, I thought The Owl House wasn’t that good, but this pilot intrigued me immediately.
Holy shit, that's a whole alternate universe here! Crazy to think the show could have been this.
This should be used for a reboot
17: 00 They just used the Mighty Eagle scream from Angry Birds
This whole concept feels a lot smoother than the og pilot.
The only difference is the end and that they hate humans. This will be a good movie bc gives more for first episode.
@@ΠέρσαΜαρατσουYeah like an owl House movie trilogy
@@jamesbevan9939 The series bible got leaked too and Belos isn't actually in this! They have an Emperor Pupa, a literal cocoon whose will is divined by three councilors implied to be keeping the cocoon from ever hatching while using the emperor's otherwise unfathomable will as their authority.
@@sanmeiwolfthat sounds cool! Where can I find that?
Maybe the gem is why they can control their curse, and the exchange was the emporeror gets to control them

Someone write a fanfic
Or get a reboot ready, or make a movie trilogy
Bro I want to see emperor Belos so bad
I miss TOH so much
Although the Pilot is amazing and shows how dark Dana wanted the series to be, there are some things that I didn't like with it.
You described it just perfectly! Gotta agree with this!
I thought I was the only one who thought it wasn't better than the one we got.
By following the book into
The BI, it’s almost like he was leading her there, to the place where she would find love and acceptance 😢
I love this interpretation.
It took me a sec to realize BI stood for Boiling Isles and not 'Luz's Dad lead her into bisexuality.'
17:54 it was so shocking that she switched voice actors for a second
I’m pretty sure that was Dana

18:48 “no i dont!!!!” so fitting of eda to not fucking remember anythin😭

I like the final direction of the show, but I won’t lie that isolating just the pilot here to episode one, this episode is much stronger in establishing character motives and dynamics. And King is much more likable off the bat, where as it took me a while to warm up to him in the final version.
Bro The OG Pilot had more interesting things and events than the original episode we got, Ngl I rate this a 9/10 overall I enjoyed it there was more people, and good first expressions and etc.
I'm saying it now as much as I like the episode 1 we got... This pilot is 100 times better
Well youd suck at making a show then
I do prefer a few of the changes they made in the final version, mainly Luz choosing to stay, rather than being forced to as I feel it was more impactful for Luz’s character and of course led to her heroic sacrifice of the portal at the end of season one and provided many plot points in season two, but it was really interesting to see how this originally played out.
Some parts are better , some are worse
@@dtadexNot worse just okay
Saying that Eda's curse would have been better if it was just a taser used by the emperors coven is a WILD take that I disagree with.
Also that three eyed character in the pilot would’ve been an icon
Ya think that three eyed girl could’ve been an early version of Boscha?
I always felt the pilot was the weakest episode. And this furthers that. We see way more of Luz here and understand why she dislikes earth so much. She was a forgetful, outcasted goofball. Amity actually stands up for her which is why she’s so eager to be friends. And her relationship with Eda starts out stronger.
I kinda wanted to see the human realm play a bigger role in the series
@@kmmk5022 i blame bob iger and bob chapek and the random disney executive who give the idea of cancelling the shows and making excuses to cancel it
@@kmmk5022 I’m sure it was initially.
Like she could’ve been a very iconic character
Though do you think she could possibly be like an early version of Boscha
20:21- 20:39 genuinely made me tear up a bit like the episode really made me feel bad for Luz about her art and when EDA saw it I thought she would say a snarky joke about it but say it was fine BUT

20:50 This sequence is just like the one from Gravity Falls when Ford’s lab is first revealed. Even the desk is similar!

Aw man, I wish they had somehow found a way to keep that scene where Eda looks at the drawing and compliments it in the final product, because that's so sweet!! I also love that Eda has some kind of affiliation with the Emperor in the pilot, it would have made for big big plot twists.
Now this is an AU that I'd love to see more of.
Even though I like the direction that they took instead; as it is more slow paced and unique, this is still such an interesting concept.
