If the generals had known that Raden had connection with Kertanegara, they should have at least liaise with Jayakatwang to see if he is willing to bend the knee. This kind of brute warfare seems different than the ones we used to hear during the warring states or 3K, where battles were fought with strategy and intelligence. This one is just pure stupidity for the Yuan dynasty, savages.
Because they have a list of tasks from Kublai Khan. first destroy Singhasari, this is typical mongol response to anyone who disrespect them or in this case harm mongol diplomat to show example and Daha kingdom of Jayakatwang is considered the continuation of Singhasari. Second, install more compliant ruler. Raden Wijaya fit the picture perfectly, he is cooperative, charismatic and most importantly he have the right to claim the kingdom. Third, extract tribute from Singhasari. By tribute it means princess of Singhasari as hostage to guarantee their loyalty. This is a bit problematic since Singhasari already usurped by their vassal kingdom of Daha, so they take Daha princess instead. Although they are fail on the big picture, they have all task checked when they sack Daha capital and install Raden Wijaya. The story not end there though few years later mongol send another punitive expedition with bigger fleet to subdue Majapahit but the fleet destroyed in naval battle by Majapahit and Champa alliance.
they must had no spies or intel in the region cause they underestimate java, and after landing 20.000 men, their biggest problem is time, the climate is shit, the jungle is shit, there's only small roads etc. and most of the troops are not mongolian, their loyalty is not the best so they wanted to wrap it up asap.
Another amazing video here, I really love the 'bigger picture' style way of handling History, since it shows how interconnected everything always was. In addition to that, great job highlighting one of the lesser known Empires of History. The Tibetan Empire is another one of those I really personally like, but info on it is hard to come by. But anyway, great work. I'll definitely be sharing this video around where I can.
I don't know if you are Indonesian or not, but you get all the main points right and your pronounciation of the Javanese names is awesome. If i may add, Jayakatwang was victorious because most of Singhasari's military were in Sumatra during a conquest, the battle against the Mongols was also conducted at sea, where Majapahit's fleet was victorious. After the Invasion, there were several naval battles fought and Majapahit never lost. Without command of the sea, it is impossible to invade Java.
Kertanegara actually anticipated the Mongol invasion. But he assumed the invasion will come via land through Malay Peninsula and Sumatera. So he assembled a huge naval force to subjugate the Malay kingdoms in Sumatera and create a buffer zone. Little did he know that Mongol actually intended to sail directly to Java. Rumor has it, both fleets narrowly missed each other near Borneo. While most of Singhasari army away on the expedition, Jayakatwang took advantage and seize control of the palace.
Mongols soldiers have been to the shores of Java to the sands of Syria, to the forests of Siberia, and the sight of Vienna. All this hundreds of years before the Age of Sail.
A small correction here "Raden" is not a person name, Raden mean Prince, Lord, or Sir. but the problem is the word "Raden" only appears some centuries later when Java adopted sultanate.
The name "Raden Wijaya" came from Pararaton manuscript from 15th century, when the empire was at its end. Nagarakertagama manuscript, written at empire's height in 14th century, mentioned him as "Dyah Wijaya". However, the most accurate name of him had already written in Kudadu stone, a stone written in 1294. His name is "Nararya Sanggramawijaya".

Cool video as always, bros! But mind if I may put some of what I've learned here? Not to disrespect your own research regarding this invasion, but as far as I see, this video only relied on Chinese account of the campaign (History of Yuan book 210, Shi Bi notes book 162, Gaoxing notes book 162, and Ike Mese notes book 131) and I see no reference to local account of the campaign (Javanese and Balinese _kidung_ , such as kidung Ranggalawe, kidung Harsawijaya, kidung Panji Wijayakrama, and Pararaton. There are more but for now I don't remember) . As you may already know, a historian should learn history from different perspectives. I knew Chinese account has been regarded as factual, and the Javanese account is usually dismissed as mere romance, but what if the Chinese account missed several parts of the campaign, either intentionally or unintentionally? W.P. Groeneveldt said that even the Chinese account themselves has inaccuracies, but of course he never regarded it as fiction or romanized. While _kidung_ (local texts) is passed down in generation, gradually losing accuracy. But if Chinese and local account is compared, they are complementary (to each other). Local accounts of the campaign mentioned princesses being part of the campaign, while Chinese account did not mention anything about women. While Chinese account positioned Raden Wijaya troops in the rear, local account mentioned the Javanese also partake in the battle. In Chinese account, the reason why Jayakatwang surrendered is not mentioned, apart from Daha being surrounded, in relatively quick duration (under 1 day). While the local account mention the Javanese troops attacked from other side (east or south depending which kidung used) and burned and looted Jayakatwang palace, thus demoralizing him. This causing him to surrender to the Mongols. For a sidenote, Daha is a capital, and capital in Java is usually a kota ("kota" in old Javanese means fort or settlement surrounded by walls, not like modern Indonesian language _kota_ which means simply a city). Jayakatwang may endured the siege for some time if he want, but he did not, something is compelled him to surrender (the burning and looting of his palace is the reason according to local account). The Chinese account did not mention naval battle occured, while local account mentioned there is/are naval battle(s). To my knowledge, the gunpowder weapon used by Mongol is _pao_ , which means cannon or eruptor (in older days this pao also refer to trebuchet). While in the video hand cannon ( _chong_ or _huo chong_ ) is illustrated instead. If you want to see different perspectives, you may use book _Of Palm Wine, Women and War: The Mongolian Naval Expedition to Java in the 13th Century_ by David W. Bade or _Majapahit Peradaban Maritim_ by Irawan Djoko Nugroho.
This is very good, cicak2. This is definitely a very important input. Because I know Bahasa indonesia, I have actually looked at some Indonesian texts on this piece of history myself. But since there are just so many conflicting versions, I just fell back on more commonly accepted accounts. I would always prefer to tell these stories in the local perspective, but choosing the right version is usually the hard part. You're right about the multiple meaning of pao. Other weapons like fire arrows can also mean both incendiary arrow and rockets, depending on the time and context. But since the soldiers were mostly drawn from the Chinese population, and Kublai prefer to use the right soldiers for the right situation, it is likely that they would be armed with gunpowder weaponry. Also, since bedil tombak was one of the earliest guns to have been documented in Java (early 1400s), it is likely that the mongol invasion was a transmission vector as some writers have suggested. But of course, they could be wrong, since our knowledge keeps evolving.
@@IllusionistsBane It's been a while since I commented that, so several new information has come up since. Pao also mean trebuchet yes, but it has been confirmed that the mongol did carry gun/cannon, not trebuchet, to Java. The original thing mentioned in Chinese record is tiu pao - signal cannon. Local account mentioning the invasion mentioned about bedil (which would mean hand cannon, not long firearms such as musket and arquebus since this is late 13th century) and meriam (cannon). Also, there are several Chinese-type hand cannon that has been found in Java, from the Brantas river where the battle took place. Those hand cannons looked like those of Yuan dynasty era, not Ming: Ming-styled hand cannon in Java has rain cover. So the depiction of hand cannon in this video is not wrong after all. I rest my case.

Well Yuan China is so far from Java they probably don't have proper intel on them
Because they have a list of tasks from Kublai Khan. first destroy Singhasari, this is typical mongol response to anyone who disrespect them or in this case harm mongol diplomat to show example and Daha kingdom of Jayakatwang is considered the continuation of Singhasari.
Keknya orang Indonesia bang dubber nya
Kertanegara actually anticipated the Mongol invasion. But he assumed the invasion will come via land through Malay Peninsula and Sumatera. So he assembled a huge naval force to subjugate the Malay kingdoms in Sumatera and create a buffer zone. Little did he know that Mongol actually intended to sail directly to Java. Rumor has it, both fleets narrowly missed each other near Borneo. While most of Singhasari army away on the expedition, Jayakatwang took advantage and seize control of the palace.
For a new leader maybe prosessing force should be long
Ahh is that why. I always thought how could a conqueror like kertanegara leave his palace undefended. Thank you, you answer one of my doubt.

Mongols soldiers have been to the shores of Java to the sands of Syria, to the forests of Siberia, and the sight of Vienna. All this hundreds of years before the Age of Sail.
Inggrisnya keren bro. Begitu pula logat Jawanya dalam pengucapan Nama² Jawa. Kereen!!
A little correction, "Raden" is a title similar to lord, so his name is actually Wijaya. And also hats off to your pronunciations.
@krishna yeah, it's javanese way to pronounce vijaya. Like visnu are pronounced wisnu
@krishna glorious
His name and noble title prior to his enthronement was dyah wijaya
A small correction here "Raden" is not a person name, Raden mean Prince, Lord, or Sir. but the problem is the word "Raden" only appears some centuries later when Java adopted sultanate.
The name "Raden Wijaya" came from Pararaton manuscript from 15th century, when the empire was at its end. Nagarakertagama manuscript, written at empire's height in 14th century, mentioned him as "Dyah Wijaya".
However, the most accurate name of him had already written in Kudadu stone, a stone written in 1294. His name is "Nararya Sanggramawijaya".
Right, 'Dyah' Wijaya will be fitter due to the era. 😂
Man, you sound very Javanese when you pronounce the Javanese names.
I know , That so amazing
Right?
He is javanese
Obviously !!
Yeah obviously
You are 100% Javanese! Lol.
I’m Javanese too, although i’ve been living overseas for the last 17 yrs and only managed to visit Java a handful of times since.
“Medhok” banget, mas!!!! 👏🏼
That "Mampus lu!!!" part was hilarious... Perfectly captured the people of my neighboring country.

Atleast you Indonesian muslim take pride in past hindu history. In india muslim abuse hindu kings who fought for nation. I hope they learn from you indonesians.
Javanese were Hindus and still are Hindus.but you Indonesian are muslims.so Don't take pride our brothers.

From malaysia🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾 good pronunciation so far i have ever heard
Singasari's power was very wide and controlled the waters of the malacca strait and the Natuna sea in the north and the Java sea to the east. And it was continved by the Majapahit Kingdom.
That's why the mongols want to subdue the Singasari Kingdom.
Singasari is a Sanskrit word
The pronounciations of the "Javanese words" in this video is the best I have ever heard from a history youtube channel!
Thank you from Indonesia, East Java, Mojopahit Kingdom
it's a rare opportunity to see the history of maritime southeast asia brought by foreigners, the history of southeast asia is quite abandoned by historians even though there are so many strong kingdom that stands, like this majapahit, I am also surprised to hear your Javanese accent in pronouncing the name of the Javanese
Lol we dont even have a history of past tribes, raja settlements and sultanate in the philippines. So its quite interesting to see the history of our neighborhing nation in SEA region
Wow CJ, excellent pronunciation on the Javanese name.
Hey, an actual great Indonesian youtuber! You got yourself a new subscriber
been hearing this story tons of time and I cant get my head out of this game of throne style story... awesome..!!!!!
And before there was the Singasari Kingdom, there were also the ancient Mataram and Medang Kingdoms, whose power was almost all of Southeast Asia..
It is just incredible to know that such a little kingdom managed to trick the mighty Mongols and defeated them so easily
Oh man I was really surprised with your pronunciation lol it's so on point. You even nailed the dialect really well
Great video of history lesson again. Thanks!!! I'll be waiting for more while viewing the published contents.
I'm impressed with the Javanese pronunciation even you have some Javanese "medok" accent, are you might be Indonesian or have Indonesian descend? (Obvious question lol)

i think this achievement play part in the rise of majapahit.

Hey I just found out this channel and you seem underrated as heck, Imma tell ma friends about this channel.
you are quite linguistic, the way you pronounce the name of our past kings correctly, with correct accent too!
I already knew about this, but you didn't fail the make the video interesting.
@@CoolHistoryBros whoa you really know your stuff and do the research! you just got yourself a like and subscriber. Keep up the good work!!
Kotai means fort in tamil,,☺️💞
AoE4 taught me that Pao can mean trebuchet - because of the Huihui Pao, a.k.a. Counterweight Trebuchet... a.k.a. the Muslim Trebuchet.
When you spoke about the weeger (sorry for my incorrect spelling) the Chinese and the Mongol and try to make a joke about no they didn't walk into the bar that was clever my friend this is a very good video good job on putting it together keep up the good work
