The Mongol Empire undoubtedly had one of the most accomplished armies in history. This video focuses on a few of their lowest points, so it should be noted that the mongols achieved a greatly disproportionate ratio of victories. What do you believe was their greatest victory against the odds and greatest defeat?
@Sword of Justice Good suggestion :)
@@EpimetheusHistory Good reply
Their greatest victory would have to be the Battle of Kalka 1223.
But what was even more admirable was the extensive campaign of Jebe and Subutai which took place in the build up to the battle.
The Mongol commanders entered enemy, hostile and unfamiliar territory, defeated new and never before encountered enemies. They used espionage, sabotage, diplomacy, military intelligence, discipline and operational and tactical brilliance to achieve what they did.
They defeated the Georgians, the Rus Princes and the Kipchaks and other nomadic tribes individually and altogether. They survived in the Caucases, Eastern Europe and went back all the more informed and educated about their enemies.
@Saksham Pandey That was definitely an epic battle

As an Indonesian, I admire our vietnamese neighbour. We always had advantage because mongols had to cross the sea to get us which is why no javanese king ever view them seriously, especially after Majapahit was born and naval army was created. Well, 1000 years of war wasn’t for nothing
The land here incredibly prefered defensive guerilla warfare and attrition, therefor significantly hampered invading armies, as has been trialed and proved time and time. Yep, over 100,000 soldiers just for raid, makes sense
actually, Vietnam (Dai Viet for more accurate) defeated Mongols by many ways. When the Mongols army captured the capital they didn't find any food left. And Dai Viet's army ambushed Mongols's food fleet.
@@umaransari9765
You mean the mongol have 100,000 soldier?
Completely wrong. No army is simply defeated by disease. The plague could have affected, but what killed the Mongol faster were the swords and spears. Have you ever seen someone with a cold, die in one day from being infected? Even the Plague and Corona virus took time to kill a person after weakening his immune system. Ancient warriors did not have antibiotics like today and their immune systems were very strong because weak children cannot live until they reach adulthood. But I can be sure that he would die instantly if beheaded.
The Japanese and Javanese should feel lucky that they still have sea and Mongols need to travel great distances in order to invade. The Vietnamese were not so lucky. Vietnam's border was close to China ( defeated by Mongols at that time) and the Mongols easily sent troops to invaded Vietnam. To win against the most powerful army in the world at that time like the Mongols, the Vietnamese people needed to do and have done more than that.
@@nguyenthang8414 actually since the Mongols never experience tropical diseases, there immune systems is garbage and its possible that they will die from infection within a day, children are born adapt to their environment + genes passed from their family so yes indeed an army could die tho shear attrition, as we saw, the Black Death wipe out half of Europe despises your claim.
Corona is not like other deadly pandemics and considering the lack of sanitizing and nutrition faced by troops + questionable “treatments” using the limited knowledge at the time and more reading on the bible (or whatever thing they use in other religion) likely make things more likely eh;)
The Mongols were so magnificent that nearly 1,000 years later were at awe with those who DIDN’T fall prey to them.
It was truly unfortunate for the Mongols to invade Java when the Game of Thrones war was already underway, not to mention that the weather and tropical land were not friendly to them. Dyah Wijaya (Raden Wijaya) was very clever in seeing this, including the Mongols as a means of revenge in order to seize the Javanese throne.
History continuosly shows us that invading Vietnam is and always has been a bad idea.

Kublai Khan's troops met their end on the island of Java (Nusantara, now called Indonesia)
I believe Japan was the Mongols most costly defeat, as certainly in manpower it has to be considered at the top. We're talking three different devastating defeats, which trumps the Viet heroic resistance imho. Ive read many times of the Mamelukes and their defeat of Hulagus army, though on a scale of manpower and resources its exceeded by the Japanese and Viet defeats. Im not that familiar w/ the Indonesian campaigns , and the fierce Turco-Afghan warriors are legendary for good reason.
I love ancient history, cant get enough of it. Gratitude for this. I hope my humble response was in some way useful. Cheers!
Because Japan is on its own island. Geographical advantage my friend. Much like how the US is on its own massive landmass that separates itself from the main continent by the whole ocean so it never really suffered any major damages in its short history compared to other established nations in the main continent.
Most of the damages the Mongol suffered was on seas or indirectly because of the sea when they tried to invade Japan.

Mongols general is so badly played by raden vijaya ( son in law of srivijaya king) both troops on land and sea is defeated. I think this history must be sealed, it will caused diplomatic crisis when mentioned because its to shameful
I wish they'd brought up the byzantines. They fought defensively because they probably had more experience fighting nomadic cavalry heavy armies than even the Mongols. They'd been doing it for over a millenia before the Ghengis, since the early days of the great wall. They didn't engage as often as they could in open battle, pulled resources back to their keeps ans even harvest crops and slaughtered livestock before the Mongols reach the area sometimes, then hid behind their walls. They along with some eastern Europeans help keep the Mongols from expanding into Europe.
I'd actually have loved to see what the Mongols would have done if they'd reach Constantinople. It was fed by the sea and had insane defenses, capable of holding out for a long time if put to siege and difficult for some of the best siege engines to assail
Let's not forget that these defeats were at times when the Mongol empire was fragmented or only a small force was engaged. The invasions of India were carried out by only the Chagatai Khanate. The defeats in the middle east were suffered by just the Ilkhanate. And Kubilai's defeats were at a time when his army consisted largely of native Chinese not Mongols or other Steppe tribes. As far as I'm aware, the Mongols were never fully defeated when they were a unified empire with a single purpose under Genghis Khan and his immediate successors.
I understand the sentiment, but that's just shifting the goalposts. Using similar logic, Rome was never fully defeated because Trajan and his legions weren't defeated, or the French were never defeated because Charlemagne was never defeated.

We indonesians better be pragmatic. Why rely on might alone when there are other means?
no, Game of Throne is actually inspired by this history.
In 1362 (or 1363) Grand Duchy of Lithuania soundly defeated Golden Horde in battle of Blue Waters. This victory determined long lasting consequences - Principality of Kyiv (majority of modern days Ukraine, in other words) was included into GDL and later-on in Polish - Lithuanian Commonwealth for about 400 years, largely influencing development of Ukraine nation.

Fun fact: The reason why Mamluks managed to defeat mongols is because, the rulers of Mamluk Sultanate were slaves from Cicrassian lands, the pontic nomands. Their leaders were familiar with steppe battle tactics and used the same tactics against mongols. if, mongols actually brought the full might of the empire obviously, Mamluks would break, but defeating but a fraction of the combined might of the mongol horde is quite the achievement.

As an Indonesian, I confirm this story and the term
"Use foreign aid to defeat rivals, and then wipe em. " was also used several times too during the dutch colonial period. One kingdom make ally with the dutch to wipe neighboring rival kingdoms, and then wipe the dutch from the land.

But didn't the Dutch ultimately colonize Indonesia though? Rulers could try this tactic over and over of stabbing your allies in the back but you'll soon make enemies and get conquered yourself.
