Learning your bass fretboard notes doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In 20 minutes, you’ll know all the notes you need to make $$$.
Are you struggling to find the notes on your fretboard? It's probably because you're trying to learn too much at once.
That’s why in this video we’re focusing on “The Money Notes” - the most commonly played notes on the neck. (that actually get us bass players paid :P)
I’ll take you through 4 steps to get you from zero neck knowledge to having a handle on enough bass fretboard notes to survive a jam session.
In Step 1 we start at the beginning with the musical alphabet. I’ll walk you through the basics in detail, including how sharps and flats work, and the two spots to watch out for in the alphabet that often trip beginners up.
Yes, it’s music theory, but it’s not that scary, I promise. And you REALLY need to know this stuff - even pro musicians who “don’t know theory” use the musical alphabet to communicate.
Step 2 is where we start applying the musical alphabet to the bass fretboard. You can’t find anything if you don’t know your open strings, so I talk you through standard bass tuning and my favorite (silly) mnemonic device for remembering the string names.
Steps 3 and 4 get really juicy - we get started with memorizing the Money Notes, which means being able to quickly find any of the notes in the musical alphabet on your bass when someone calls them out to you at a jam.
Then we’ll put it all together and get ready to jam with a guitar player. You get to use your new neck knowledge to find the notes that I call out to you in our jam session.

Best way to learn.

Playing at the 5th fret and below: This is the cash register.
Haha, love it, how did I not think of that for this video?

I'm actually going to cry. After months of not understanding what notes and sharp + flats are I've finally found a video that teaches me step by step. This is so amazing thank you, you're an amazing teacher
He really is!!!
Not to be philosophical but I really think the way he teaches taps into our childhood way of learning in school. Which process the information faster. I to finally learned the notes and the freeboard lol. Good luck in your playing
Same here. I finally feel like I’m getting somewhere. Thank you!
Same

At 70 and dyslexic always wanted to be a musician, failed at numerous attempts through my life.
Now thanks to you and your way of teaching bass in a way that I can comprehend. Being retired I have plenty of time to practice and I did it I am a bassist, with 350 songs in my library that I can play along with, having the best time of my life on my number one on my bucket list.
Dyslectic wannabe musician here as well... let's untie!! 🙂
350 songs? Wow! Well done. I am 67, and I started ten weeks ago. Maybe I have two songs. But lots of fun.
waaaaaayyy cool ! I'm at 59 and learning this as well. nicely done.
I have dyscalculia and it makes this stuff so hard so I feel you

This is the most wholesome thing I’ve ever read!
@@kaylaandrews4966 Hi Kay, That is just so nice of you. I'm sorry I used the word "f*#t" now! I'm still playing bass badly but at least I know why and I think I'm getting better. What brought you here to Josh's site, do you play?
Colin Dyer Haha! Just bought a starter bass this week. Watching a few videos before it comes in to get a general idea on how to start playing :)
... even Nickelback? Are you serious? Nice message, by the way.
I must have watched half a dozen videos about Bass Fretboard Notes ... and this is the *only* one that made me *really* understand the layout (the logic behind it), literally within seconds.
No unnecessary information, no off-topic blabla, the subject presented in an easy-to-understand and entertaining manner.
Some people just have a knack for teaching.
Thanks, Josh, that was awesome!
2 years later but i agree. I’m loving this dude’s personality, teaching methods and his channel. As a psych major i also appreciate the connections he makes with those theories as well.
i love how this is explained, theres no standard set and no "common sense" knowledge, it's just completely from the beginning, explained for people with no knowledge at all so far and that makes it not only very understandable but also very fun to watch and learn from
This is literally the most helpful bass lesson on youtube, and he's kinda funny too Thank you for this !!!!!
You're welcome Tomike!
The best!

Yea kinda!
so true
wow..I just learnt a lot even when there's no bass guitar with me.

Thanks Donald, I appreciate the kind words! Doing my best. :)
I'm on day 4 of learning bass. Never played any instrument before so I've never understood the notes and where they are. This is the video I've been looking for. So helpful!
How you doing now?
Time to pick up your bass
Same, im trying to learn bass even if i am a failure in music but im doing my best and i willy buy a bass in some days
"I'm not earning any money right now" LOL : )
Haha, ain't it the truth. Thanks for watching Davey, I love your playing!
Wow I didn’t expect to see you here! I just started playing about three weeks ago and I love your channel.
This is the peak of communication for Bass teaching. I really look forward to watching these, Josh.
Thank you Stu! That's great to hear, always appreciate the feedback. 👍
Decided to learn bass to combat the quarantine brain fuzzies. This has been the best instructional video I’ve seen - thanks!! 🎸
Glad it helped Kat!
MAN! Relating the bass to the piano keys was a genius move and makes sooo much sense! It’s taken away the “just memorize” approach and conceptualizes everything. 💯
Josh, I knew all this literally before you were born, yet you somehow made it fresh and engaging, and had me playing along. I spent money on another guy's course because his content impressed me--but he's boring, which makes it hard to stay with it. Viewers, don't make the same mistake. If you get bored easily, and have a hard time staying with things, Josh can help take you from beginner to badass. (No, he didn't pay me.)
Josh has always been one of the best bass teachers on UA-cam. He's has a fun and engaging way of conveying his lesson material; - I've enjoyed watching him go from strength to strength, lessons just get better & better!
Josh, I'm new to your lessons (being a very beginner at bass) and in minutes you cleared up so much for me. I've tried reading bass books, listened to other You Tube guys, but they all left me fuzzy. Thnx
Same boat, and I completely agree with you about Josh's teaching style. Thanks Josh!
I feel the same. Not to bragg, but I am a Stanford who's who of music was inducted into Stanford's who's who black book 2 years in a row 2012 & 2013 there is plenty more but I will spare you the rest. Anyway this young man has provided a way of learning that is very fun and exciting...not that I needed to learn this again but it never hurts brush up, maybe see things in a different way. I love it great job.

Way back in high school my guitar teacher was teaching us how to play acoustic guitar and she taught us to think of it this way to memorize the strings: EADGBE “Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie”. That is STILL stuck in my head 10 years later.
Pausing this at the 8:13 mark because I'm literally in awe. Sometimes you just have to get someone to explain something a certain way and it all clicks. You really made me feel like I just solved a complicated math problem that I haven't been able to solve for years. Not sure where I go from here but when someone says C# I'll actually know where the heck they want me to play instead of just doing it by ear.
Awesome, nice lightbulb moment!
I just learned more from you in five mins than I learned in 4 years. Thank you very much
You're welcome Kennylee, glad I could help!
I learned english and chord notes at the same time, gracias buddy.
As someone who already knows theory, but just doesn’t know where the notes are on the bass, this guy is my saviour!! 🙏🙏🙏
Man, I just discovered you. I played bass for 20 years, 13 of them professionally -7 years that I played last time- and now that my kids are showing interest in music, I have no idea how to approach teaching them, BUT here you are! You are amazing at getting to the point in a fun and effective way! You got me hooked for the entire video. Very well done, man!
Thanks Miguel!
What an amazing comment! Good luck to you sir!
I’m going to school to be a music teacher and this gave me a lot of good ideas for my guitar and bass students. Thank you! You are a great teacher.
Thanks Benjamin!
This was without a doubt, the most helpful twenty minutes of bass instruction that I have ever had.
I mean like in the history of the effing world.
Thank you so much, and keep on keepin' on. We need you.
As an absolute novice I have felt the idea of jamming as my worst nightmare but, having just watched this video I am now so willing to give it a go. Such a simple way of learning, THANK YOU!
Glad it helped Natasha!
Bro, I'm stupid as a door and I'm learning from you! thanks for being here! Wish you all the best!
You're welcome Julio! Glad some info is making it through the doorway. :)
I've been playing bass for 2+ years but i found it impossible to learn chords so i stuck to tabs and this saved me! thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Thank you. As a beginner bass player and a former teacher of 35 years, I appreciate the content and structure of your lessons. I played my first song, High and Dry, with you. It is part of my warm up.
My childhood doubts are cleared by this video. I got confidence now to learn base guitar. Thank you very much.
Go for it! :)
You are the FIRST person who has successfully got me to understand the layout of the scales on a keyboard! I'm so thrilled and looking forward to learning bass guitar with your lessons! Seriously...I'm almost in tears...I thought I was too old (52) and/or too dumb to ever learn this stuff.
Really glad I could help!
Great job Josh. I was "fretting" about it until you explained it. Job well done!!! 👍💗😊
Yes it's a fine line between "fretting" and getting "board" by the topic, so your feedback has been "noted." Have to dash, the Pun Police just knocked at the door...🚔🤓
@@BassBuzz well played Josh! Good to have a "word ninja" such as yourself to have a palaver with. Keep up the good work! 👍😊💗
As someone who has been trying to learn to play the bass this is, by far, the best video I've seen. The other ones just confused the heck out of me but you make it so easy to understand. Can't wait to get back to practicing!
Glad it helped Joseph!
About 20 years ago, I had a motorcycle accident. After I healed up a bit, I figured playing a Bass would be good PT for my formerly broken hand. It worked great for my hand, for my playing, not so much. About a year later, my son "loaned" my Bass to a friend of his, and I haven't seen it since. Now that I'm retired, I got bit by the Bass Bug again. On a whim, I bought a used one online, sight unseen for $50, (identical to the "E-bay" Bass Josh played in his 5 cheap Bass Guitar video). Thanks to Josh, I've learned more about music and playing Bass Guitar in the past week than I ever have before. Now I'm shopping around for a good used J Bass - something that actually has a name brand on it...
Thank-you Josh, you are the BEST! You make this easy to understand, entertaining, and most of all, FUN!
In my beginner book it had a little phrase called “Big Cats Eat Fish” to remember that there was no flat or sharp notes between B,C & E,F. Helped me immensely!
Dude I’ve been playing bass for 7 years and I thought learning the chords would be hard and you made them feel so easy to learn, you literally made me mad about the last 7 years of my life
Glad it was easy to learn, sorry to make you full of regret. 😜
i played guitar solo for 14 years and never undertand the note theory. this year i wanna try to play bass bcause got boring with my guitar. After watching this video, i learn both the note theory& picking the bass. only in 19 minutes. nice video. so clear!
I was 14 when I had my first bass lesson (48 years ago!). The teacher told me, “Don’t memorize the fretboard, FEEL it.” I can’t tell you how much that stunted my progress as a bass player. And how embarrassing it was whenI first tried jamming with others! Your lessons are, hands down, the easiest on-ramp to playing the bass. Genius really. Even at my ripe age I’m learning a ton. Keep it up.
You are seriously blowing my mind. I just bought a bass during Black Friday and just went with tabs (where it shows numbers and stuff). I looked at a few things for beginners, but this is the first one where literally everything made sense to me. You are making it so easy on this video, and I have to thank you for it. Thanks!
You're welcome Ceielo!
"I'm not making any money now" LOL
I need 100 more lessons of this level. Old chick, crappy memory. I have been goofing around with my bass, jamming with no rhyme or reason, just lots of rhythm, dancing around my living room, amp blasting. Now I have to buckle down and learn something. I am very visual so your visuals are awesome. Thanks
you’re a wonderful teacher ... you helped me overcome so much of the confusion i’ve had trying to learn on my own
I bought a Bass 5 years ago and I've paid for Bass lessons...After watching this video, in less than 20 minutes, I've learnt and understood from you for free, what I've not learnt in 5 years of paying for classes. This is by far the best Bass lessons on the WWW :)
You’re an amaZING TEACHER THANK YOU SO MUCH ! I’ve been playing bass for 4 years but I never had enough money for lessons so I’ve just been playing by ear never truly knowing the notes I was playing so thank you!
You're welcome AJ!
You really do make learning bass way less overwhelming.
My user name is way cooler than yours 😆
Having learnt music on the piano but wanting to learn bass this was exactly the video I needed. It was hard to wrap my head around the note locations without the visual cue of white and black keys that I'm used to.

I Thought what you meant by Money Notes, are the notes needed to play Money by Pink Floyd
Ha, fair.
Most of Money is played in the 'money' zone...
Josh just reminding you that you're an absolute goat and I'm so glad we have you in the guitarist community
This was such a good way to learn, I play the violin so I knew the order of the notes. That made it so much easier
I've been playing bass for over a year and a half but because I'm self taught I've been too lazy to teach myself anything other than how to play basslines! This has been super helpful and easy to follow, I finally feel like a real musician! Thank you!!
Josh, just wanted to take the time to say that I really appreciate vids like this on youtube. I’ve been playing bass for almost 30 years. I know this theory almost too well to be able to explain it clearly to a student. Not sure that even makes sense? I am currently teaching the next generation...my son how to play.
Your tutorial makes it very easy to understand the fundamentals and breaks it down in a simple and clean methodology for finding root notes, memorizing how sharp/ flat works and when and how to play these notes.
Very well done! Inside of just 20 mins you have found a way to take what took me many lessons of non-usable theory and turned it into getting right to a jam session. Exactly WHAT EVERYONE wants to do. Jam! Thanks!
Thank you Joe!
I know this is an old(ish) video, but if you see this I just want to say that you're an amazing teacher. You made the fret notes so incredibly easy that's it's amazing. Well done and thank you!
You're welcome!
This helped me so much in memorizing notes! Thank you Josh, you're literally the best bass teacher on youtube.
Holy damn this is by far one of the best bass beginner guides out there. thank you so much!
You're welcome!
as a very young child I took organ lessons for 2 years, so the sharps and flats are nothing new for me, but you taught it well
Thanks Wesley!
I can't recommend this guy enough. Learned so much from his videos and now his course. These are the foundations of playing for free and it's amazing. Thanks Josh!
Thank you! :)
I don’t really comment on UA-cam, but I just felt compelled to share my experience here. I’m 22, just bought my first bass 2 days ago after a while of feeling an urge to play, loving the bass lines dearly in the songs I love and listen to most. I started guitar lessons in 2021, bought my electric and everything, it felt great and I did it for a few months, but I lost motivation to continue oddly enough… Tried picking it back up again a few weeks ago, but again wasn’t feeling it. Kept fighting the urge to play bass even though I’ve had such a desire to, due to various reasons, such as hearing from some people, “Learning guitar first before bass is essential,” which I found now isn’t necessarily true. Decided to take the leap of faith and try bass, and I am loving the sound so much already and feel so fulfilled. Your lessons help so freaking much for people who don’t have the opportunity (whether it be time or financial) to take in-person lessons from a teacher, like myself at the moment. You explain things so incredibly well, and I feel like a curious kid with a lot of wonder, watching this and being able to translate the keys on the piano to the fretboard. You’re an amazing teacher and your pacing and humor just adds to it, thank you so, so much for these videos (from myself and everyone else watching this pursuing bass for the first time!) My motivation to keep playing is tenfold! 💗✨🥹
I was cracking my head open trying to memorize all. This was awesome. I knew it was symmetrical etc. But this was the best lesson. Beginner here. Gonna pick my bass now. Thanks man!!!
Glad this helped Jaime!
Josh, you are one of the best bass instructors here that actually teaches. Great job and you have that gift. Keep it up.
Josh, you’re a natural teacher!! Absolutely brilliant 🙃 thank you … it’s all coming back now after a 20 year break!!’ 💕💕💕💕💕
ive been playing for YEARS and this is the first video to help me find my notes!! thank you so much!!
Genuinely helpful. Joining a jazz band and having never played bass before or played with others, this is enough to get me through a few sessions before I fully dive in.
Excellent lesson. You are an awesome teacher for the bass! Thanks!
Thank you!
This is really helpful. I'm getting back into playing bass again after 20+ years and this is the exact refresher I needed before attempting things I've only heard and never played like a walking bass line. Never too late to learn. Great job.
Really understanding octaves and other intervals helped me see the pattern clearer.
you could be the best teacher i have ever watched, thanks a lot
Thank you! 🐶
This was amazing. I just restarted learning bass and in this one video I fully learned the notes on the fret very easily. Feels like I just learned magic. Forever thankful and will be watching all of your videos on my new journey.
Right on Josh! Thank you for these videos. We can tell you have a passion for teaching.👏👏
This literally blew my mind. Seeing how you laid it all out and explained the bass compared to piano keys made this all make much more sense! Thank you so much 🙏🏼
Thank you so much sir. These were extremely helpful due to their oversimplified nature, I don't have to worry when I'm asked to jam by my friends. Hands down the best bass teacher on UA-cam in my opinion, I really feel comfortable with you.
You're welcome Chinmay!
I’m just starting to learn bass and appreciate the lessons, best I could find.
Thanks Gilbert!
Super simple and clear! You nailed in 20 minutes what my first bass teacher took about 4 weeks to instill in me :)
Great lesson! The way you unpacked all of the notes is natural to follow along with 👍
OMG! This is the BEST video explained it all. I'm piano player and just started to learn how to play bass, you made absolutely astonishing job to explain it. I literally was staring on strings missing piano keys because strings, even 4, made no sense to me and was SO puzzling! Thank you for your time and effort you've put into that content.
You're welcome! Glad it all clicked for you.
Oh man, where have you been when i was a beginner. I learn all of this with yellings of my buddies. Im playing bass since 2014!
So fundamental but so useful. Ive been playing bass for 6 or 7 years and i still gonback to the basics. It never ends.
Josh, your teaching method is fantastic. So is your style of teaching. Your videos are perfect. Thanks!
Thank you so, so much for this! My 10 year old is learning to play, and I'm attempting to help him learn...though I have no music-playing background myself. This helps a TON. So far he's refused to take traditional lessons (he has functioning autism and severe ADHD, so it's a little complicated) but your videos, which we can pause and come back to, are phenomenal!
You're so welcome Emily! Glad I can help.
Emily D Good luck to your son!
I cannot thank you enough! I'm starting to feel confident as a beginner bassist!
Good to hear Claire, glad I could help! 😊
what a great video, that last part at the end where I didn't have a tab in front of me but still knew what to play was kinda magical
No matter what level you are, there's always a new discovery going back to basics. You're an Excellent Teacher. I really appreciate how easy and enjoyable you make the Wonderful Bass to understand. Thank you!🦋
I’ve played guitar with my brother for like 14 years, and am just now trying to pick up the bass so we can keep a full band.
This video was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a TON my man.
You're welcome Austin, have fun!
Although I've been playing for more years than I choose to disclose I find your way of teaching much easier for the student then
my way. Hammer on Josh I want to see what other tips I can steal of yours to put in my arsenal.
Thanks Richard!
Thank you! I was so confused at the start of the video I thought it might take me ages to understand this but I stuck through it and by the end of the video I feel like I got it down! You're a great teacher, thanks for putting your time and effort into these lessons for us.
The first bass lesson I have understood on UA-cam so fast. This is SOOOO helpful. Thank You Thank You.
This was very well explained.
Additionally, I watched it WITHOUT the bass in my hands which I believe made it even easier to understand, for when I pick it up next.
Don't have a bass but I'm getting my first one for Christmas. Thx for helping me get prepared. These are really helpful :)
Nice! Hope you dig your bass. :)
How is it just got one as well

Big smokes S That’s awesome!! I haven’t gotten that far yet, just trying to learn the notes and stuff...but I am hoping to get there :-)
Best video so far for beginners. Thanks Josh. Very very well done and easy to follow and understand.

Thanks for the teaching on linking the piano keys to the fret board in such an easy to follow method. It makes so much sense now.
I'm a drummer and your teaching style has just inspired me to head up to my home studio where there is a bass waiting to be severely checked out. Thank you so much just what I've been looking for. Oh and the Kutcher thing is definitely going on.

Thank you for you videos man. You're always able to explain to the logic and reasoning behind why things are the way they are. I hate videos that teach you as if you're supposed to just immediately remember info without any explaination of how it came to be that way. With your videos, you make it make sense and THEN i can understand and remember. Thanks seriously
