i am a pixies fan, i ADORE the mountains, and i m from Greece (where there is actually a mountain called Olympus). Sometimes i fantasize that this song is written for me. And the I cry
Well there’s a mountain on Mars and it’s named Olympus Mons and it was obviously named after the mountain in Greece, and the mythological Mount Olympus.
I miss the 90s. The breeders & the pixies would make songs about the weirdest stuff... a bird 🐦 flying to a mountain ? A cannonball??? Not just songs about love ❤️
So the Olympus Mons is the largest mountain in our solar system. It’s on Mars and it’s waay taller than Mt Everest, I think like 10x. There are many interesting references in the song, “rusty morning” in reference to Mars’ atmosphere which is super oxidized. The narrative quality of this song is great. During the slow part the alien crash lands (or bird, whatever) and needs some place to sleep tonight. So it’s dark out. And for the peak of the crescendo, when the energetic part begins, it’s depicting the early morning sunrise showing the alien his first glimpse at these massive mountains that he’s in the midsts of
@blablubbkeks No man, there are definitely some sour notes going on with her between 0:51 and 1:08. In Bass player magazine which did a feature on her, she mentioned she was having tuning problems during the making of Trompe De Monde so she switched to a Steinberger bass instead of a Music Man. However, she hated the way it looked (I don't blame her) so I guess that's why she switched back to the Stingray bass.
Someone wrote a wicked comment about what the song could mean i was something like speed leaving without warning was his spaceship crashing and he is describing his last view before he dies - Its sounds shit how i've written it but it was ace i wish i'd written it down !
@OXYSTERNON Weeeell, I maintain it's got intonation/tuning problems, but not enough to ruin a fantastic performance of a sublime song. Definitely nothing wrong with her timing. How's that for compromise? ;-)
the keyboard is not in tune with the bass in the recorded version of this song, makes the whole thing sound warped, maybe why the bass sounds funny around the 1.00 mark.
Kim looks absolutely incredible
"This song is about a little bird who goes to sleep, and he has a dream that he goes to Mars".
Sure! Very cleaver observation! Thank you
..., and he has a dream that he goes to Bars !

One of the many great things about this song is that it's so short and succinct. By 2.30 everything that could be said had been said.
such a grand song!
Play this at my funeral
Olympus Mons, the tallest mountain in our solar system, located on Mars.
Being an Ornithologist...my fav!

Tal vez la banda mas importante de los últimos 35 años y también la mas infravalorada...una genialidad hecha rock!
hermosa cancion, hacia la montaña, yo caere
Reminds of Tannhauser return to the Venusberg (die peacefully).
Olympus Mons is so big and tall since there is no sea level on Mars.
The sunlight is going (8) TROMPE LE MONDE el mejor album de Pixies!
Best there was! best there ever will be?
Great Band !
They don't write 'em Like This anymore!
Olympus Mons is about 22 km in height. Pixies teached me all I know.

I'm not a religious person by any stretch but.... I'm pretty sure the Pixies were gods.
I want hair like joey santiago.🎳

How hot is Kim in this?
Charles looks good too
@llanbo I think it isn't out of tune, it's just the Music Man Stingray sound (and her gear).
yes
no
Seems to me its a combination of it being the Stingray and the fact that its just an old recording
It's awesome that Eugene from Walking Dead is playing keys for them! Had no idea he was multitalented.
@proffesorcaresser agreed

Dennis Miller show in 1992 - fyi
I love this song, but I think they should've had Kim sing it.
@blablubbkeks you're right, kim's bass is not out of tune at all ! Just the really special Stingray's sound.
Which year was this shot?
what talk show was this? they were on twice in about a week... Chevy Chase?
Dennis Miller's short lived network show.
What does he speaks before the song?
Someone can write? I can't understand!
"This song is about a little bird, he goes to sleep and he has a dream that he goes to Mars"
Do you know what this song say?
Kim's ego ruined the Pixies. She was hired by the Pixies and thought she as important as Frank
Kim is wearing makeup...
Great song, or should I say a swan song? Poor Kim is tucked far away from Charles in the rear of the stage.
Jesus, how out of tune is Kim's bass?
