If you ever had a loving memory of the castle at the Magic Kingdom, you can thank Ludwig. His castle, Neuschwanstein, is its inspiration.
I love Neuschwanstein it’s so pretty.
Wouldn’t be surprised if he had a bonus toward wonders from previous eras, or at least some kind of wonder bonus.

In Germany, especially Bavaria he is known as the "Märchenkönig", the fairytale king.

@@FriedrichBarb the leader ability will be replaced, which is holy roman emperor. Germany does then lose the extra military policy slot, but this may be highly worth it.
@@FriedrichBarb They don't replace the CIV's ability (which Imperial Cities is) with these alternate leaders, they only replace the leaders ability which is the City State/policy slot.
Germany is already at the top Civ nations, no?
a bonus military slot is nice, but its hardly what makes Germany good, so it'd be *really* hard for Ludwig to not be at least top tier, if not better than Germany already is.
I actually visited the castle when I did study abroad in Germany! They have a musuem and smaller castle that were both really cool; the history of Ludwig and how he died is wild.
I have a recommendation for everyone to google regarding that topic. Search for "Guglmänner", especially for pictures.
The people dress a little like K*K, but are actually not rasists but a kind of guard for the late Ludwig 2. They believe he was murdered by Prussia so that Bavaria is easier to incorporate into the 2nd Reich and not united with Austria Hungary. Quasi-conspiracy theorists of the old time. The members are a kind of secret society and consist mainly of nobles and academics from Bavaria.
"Brought into" sounds way better than "sold to"
boy would sure be nice if their bonuses and abilities were shown! Hard to get excited for random historical figure Enigma without knowing their benefits!

Honestly a great choice!! There's never been too much variety with German leaders. It's pretty much been Frederick the Great and Bismarck, but I loved the choice of Frederick Barbarossa for Germany in Civ 6 since most people only know German leaders from the past 200 years or so. Ludwig is a fantastic addition! I do love Prussian leaders, but it's really nice to get leaders in from other German states from the past. I'd love to see multiple German leaders in Civ 7, and maybe even Charles V as an option for Austria and Spain!
Don´t forget the GOAT of Germany, Wulf Isebrand of the peasants republic of Dithmarschen.

It's not Ludwig II who integrated Bavaria in the German Empire.
In fact it was Otto von Bismarck after his death.
Ludwig made it possible though.
He set his nation up for integration. Bismarck was in the north German federation.
"Brought Bavaria into the German Empire" makes it sound like a positive achievement for the Bavarians or his rule in general. This is the man Bismarck bribed into offering King Wilhelm of Prussia the Imperial Crown, thus unabling German Unification without any further struggles. I don't mean to hate on the leader choice though, I think it's awesome seeing a fresh face for a Germann leader.
They wanted to say “Was batshit crazy and built some sick fairytale castles” but Firaxis made them be diplomatic about it.
He is a leader of Germany, him bringing Bavaria into the German Empire is an achievement
I would say people had a mixed opinion some wanted a united german empire and some didn't so I guess it can be an achievement
@@Lizzhm no, only the French didn't want a united Germany. The vast majority of Germans on the other hand? There is a reason that even the _liberals_ of the time sang Deutschland Ueber Alles unironically. Let's just say they were sick and tired of the rest of Europe pushing them around...
@Aaron Neumann there were german states that valued their independence. The 48 revolutions did bring nationalistic fevor to germany but it wasn't a 100% thing.
Austria was a german state that staunchly opposed german unification hence the German Brothers War.

I went to Neuschwanstein once, fell in love at first sight, I have a painting of it in the wall of my room and it's the first thing I see on I wake up... also known as Disney castle, inspiring nonetheless... when I saw Ludwig on my youtube feed as a new leader I thought "FINALLY I CAN BUILD MY OWN NEUSHWANSTEIN AGAIN, SAME AS CIV5 AND NO ONE CAN STEAL FROM ME"
Talking about Germany, I am missing Emperor Karolus Vth of Germany, Carlos Iº of Spain. The father of king Phillip. Same way you did with Leonor De Aquitania, he could lead both civilizations.

Bonus to building leader specific defensive works with cultural bonuses. ie. castles. Also maybe city flipping without waiting, maybe for money.

Edit: I`m very interested to see another german / bavarian ruler in Civ. I might have chosen a different one - maybe Bismark again, someone from the Harbsburg dynasty... but I'm not unhappy or mad with whom Firaxis decided to go.
As you get further along in the game, the threshold for avoiding a dark age becomes more difficult?

Historically accurate. Ludwig was not very bavarian. He spoke hochdeutsch, was very particular in having french words be pronounced correctly and didn't accept the bavarian dialect from the ones surrounding him.
A much better and more classically bavarian monarch was Prinzregent Luitpold. He actually did speak in dialect unlike Ludwig.

I think he is the worst pick, because not only is he quite controversial, but also doesn't really represent germany/german civilization.
Bavaria wasn't even independent most of that time. So he wasn't even a "ruler", but just a generic noble and vassal.

Leaders pass animations are surely downgrade from older leaders. Just watch ones like cleopatra or cyrus, they are very high quality.

He didnt want to join a prussian ruled Germany. He was still the king of a german state.
He wanted an emperor fromm the House of Habsburgor or House of Wittelsbach. He just didn't accept the prussian dominion which got their rise in power at negotiations after Napoleons fall

Nope! The only doctors who were willing to diagnose him with any mental illness were ones who had never met him. He never spent tax money on his personal projects, and he negotiated a deal with Prussia that greatly improved the financial stability of both his person and his country.
That seems to be a misconception? Or at least a relatively weak case. He was declared crazy because of his patronage using his *personal funds*. His ministers did it to oust him. It's unsure how true this is, but there does seem to be foul play.

He looks typical for a southern German which in the past was known for its Alpine look, Germans of Bavarian ancestry like Glark Gable for example typically are a bit more dusky, brunette and stocky, Ludwig here is no acception.

Finally, a good leader for Germany. Sick of Bismarck and the Fredricks. Ludwig II was based as fuck. He was a patron of Wagner, commissioned many of Bavaria's most beautiful landmarks, and was also gay.
