Every time I hear and see Fairport Convention: Dave Swarbrick, Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol and Martin Lamble, play, "Sir Patrick Spens", "Flatback Caper", and other great Fairport songs their shared discipline and open-ended musicianship is always in evidence to my ear and aye.
Captured by the arrangement when I first heard it.Swarb knew how to come in a little early ,.just right for the verse. We are lucky to have this. The boys were phoning nothing in and we'll never see their like.again.Thanks for this.
Saw him downstairs at The Kings Head in Crouch End, London, where he he presented essentially a masterclass in English folk fiddle playing, Such a pleasure to hear him play and chat to him afterwards...
Thanks very much for posting. This is superb. Big fan of Fairport and this shows this line up at it's very best. They don't make em like they used to, magical stuff.
There was a huge amount of stuff vying for my meagre funds back in 1970 - including Patto - and somehow Full House is the only Fairport album to make it. I'm not sure why I stopped there because I absolutely love Full House and this is great. Thanks so much for posting.
Remember the feeling very well. Wondering whether to fork out on a Spooky Tooth LP or one by Jethro Tull? Yes or Steelye Span? Great times for open ears, before everything was pigeon holed to death.
Directors/cameramen back in the day, had no clue how to film live bands. They rarely had any idea who was playing what!! As an added insult, they would often resort to silly visual effects. Thankfully, things got better!
As an American raised in the U.S., I'll never really "get" English folk music, songs and melodies hundreds of years old about a very different culture and history. I love it, but I know I'm missing some important stuff.
I was at Glastonbury in 71. FC had the whole crowd doing English round dances. Best concert I ever saw, and I saw everybody.

By the time Swarbrick joined and well before they would play those songs live. That man is Dave Mattacks.

Folk rock never gets better than that.
Absolutely fantastic 🌞
Saw Swarb a couple of times near the end -absolutely magical. It's great to see him at the start of his career to remind me of then...

Wonderful stuff!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. It vanished for a while, and I am so glad it has reappeared.
Pure magic.

Great video...thanks so much for posting!
Filmed in Oakwood Park, Maidstone. The grounds of what was Maidstone Technical School for Boys, since re-named Oakwood Park Gammar School
Amazing musicians, amazing music. Absolutely first class.
Why on Earth whoever filmed this didn’t film any of the instruments is beyond me, especially Thompson’s guitar
Yes, strange videography. All up close and personal, virtually no background until the very end.
It's very low key I guess still great in a close up sort of way.

You have hit the nail...!!
At that time that was so common...!!!
It happened at almost every rock concert filmed in those days...
Just great, thanks for this relic!

A truly amazing musician ..
Is there any footage of Fairport with Sandy?
Serious domestic dispute brewing at 1:25!
