Very happy for his trainer ...post-race interview was so nice, seeing his mentor, Todd Pletcher give him a shoulder embrace! There was a bit of talk about Rombauer ahead of the race over the last few days and he came through!
To each his own. I don't know whether McCarthy cheats, but I know Pletcher, a onetime D Wayne Lukas assistant, is right up there with Baffert and Assmussen in terms of the number of drug violations on his rap sheet.
Trainers have been trying to get an edge for as long as they've been racing horses. My father was a horse player, and he knew a few of the local trainers at Finger Lakes. One of the trainers came over for dinner one evening and revealed his plan to use "something (undetectable) he found in South America" to juice one of his horses for an upcoming race. My dad was to place some hefty wagers with bookmakers throughout Central NY. I can't recall if it worked. There was one jockey who would tell us when he was going to stiff a horse and when he was going to use a buzzer. In the post parade, it was either "whip down" (stiff job) or "whip up" (the buzzer). Still, with all of that, it really didn't get completely corrupted until Lukas came along. I'm not sure how he fared in the post-race tests. I think he beat them nearly all the time, but everyone "knew" he was training horses on steroids and perhaps something else. His 2yo fillies were muscled up and filled out like 4yo colts. Now, the list of top money-winning trainers reads like a Who's Who of serial drug offenders, most with at least a couple dozen post-race positive tests on their rap sheets.

@@wingsrbeasts I wasn't. It's a sad state of affairs. If you don't enforce drug rules, the cheaters win. If you do, the handful of trainers -- all cheaters -- who train most of the best horses refuse to run them, and you have a 6-horse field in a Classic. Either way, fans and bettors lose. It can't or won't be fixed until or unless these cheaters are facing criminal charges and driven right out of the sport.
What a call that final turn gave me the chills.
I did want Medina Spirit to win for the possibility of a Triple Crown but my heart leaped when I saw Rombauer move up the inside and when his jockey gave him a opening to the outside, he took it, seeing only dirt track in front of him! Look forward to his run in the Belmont Stakes!
Could Rombauer bloodline have something to do with this amazing win. Secretariat lives on. Congrats to team Rombauer💙

Rombauer ran a very fast race, 2nd fastest in the last 12 years. Midnight Bourbon was a worthy 2nd and actually ran a fast time himself, he's gonna be a force to be reckoned with in the handicap division as he matures, especially being by Tiznow who matured late himself.
Track was souped to the max.

The last 2 Preakness Stakes ( '20-'21) have been coming close to Secretariat's record time of 1:53 . After all these years (1973) Secretariat's records still stand. Amazing !
This Rombauer time is the fastest ever...Secretariat ran a 1:54 that day...his handlers Cribbed the true time...time the tape!

Rombauer is a TERRIFIC winery in Napa if you ever have had the pleasure. Not sure if it was the inspiration for the name, but congrats to Team Rombauer nonetheless! Perfect trip after saving ground then busted loose. Tiny horse, big heart.

I just wish NBC devoted more time to Rombauer before the race, who I knew had a chance along with the top 2. Everything was about Baffert, Drug violation. And then they don't do as many profiles on the other horses
NBC never shows the payoffs unlike the "Horse Racing Fans" channel. I had to watch the race there to see the payoffs.

100% agree. I liked Rombauer for days leading up to the race but wasn't sure about a win. Knew he had a good chance to hit the board because there would be a good pace up front. When I heard NBC's Eddie Olczyk say "Rombauer looks like a beast" in the walk up that gave me the confidence to increase my bet across the board. Just a great, great race and Flavien knew what to do.

This was what in the making for Rombauer he took his time and learn the pace of the big guns said he's was a derby prospect, The belmont and breeders cup in line 👍👍
Breeder's Cup is the big deal. No Triple Crown this year...MSpirit just ran out of gas.
The Belmont doesn’t seem likely. Owner John Fradkin says that there is only a 50/50 chance Rombauer will be entered in that race. He’s thinking of running the horse in NYRA’s Turf Triple, instead. As for the Breeders Cup, expect to see Rombauer in a race that is a sure thing and easy money and with the weakest possible competition. Fradkin is a very analytical guy who is a long-time handicapper and big-time gambler who got into the breeding and racing business so that he could make more informed wagers on horses and win more bets.

Peg, two weeks after the Derby the juice effect was gone. It is like the prescription drug the doctor give for diabetis.....it say take every twelve, or six hours. Baffert could no give another dosis two weeks later cause he was under the microscope.

He definitely likes the longer distances, he didn't really " roll out" until almost 3/4:of the race

Not true, he skipped the derby to focus on Preakness, he excels in the shorter races, Belmont is mad long.
I don’t think so. The Preakness tends to be won by decent miler types most of the time. That’s why they took a shot with Rachel Alexandra years ago......because she was a great miler and had the speed to get out there and get a lead and hold off the closers. They skipped the Belmont with her because they knew she’s never get a mile and a half. Same thing with Red Bullet in 2000....he was a great miler but that was it.

The Preakness is usually a much smaller field than the Kentucky Derby
I picked the #2 horse keepmeinmind. He had a horrible delayed start but managed to battle back and place fourth. I'd like to see him in the Belmont and see how he does with a good start
He barely got out of the gate in the Derby as well. Ran very well today but I just don't expect him to amount to much if he's always the last one out.

I had him too. I had 3 different horses at good odds across the board and he was one of them. He looked great in my handicap. I also liked Risk Taking and Ram but they faded early
I had him across the board. I always like new shooters in The Preakness. And my wife and I visited Rombauer in Napa back in 1997. Incredible 🍷. So it was a sentimental pick that paid off nicely.🤣

@@q4life551 the Derby was the exception not the rule. The Preakness race is about normal for him. Also he wasn’t on steroids as in PEDs he was being treated with a steroidal anti inflammatory cream for a rash

Rombauer closed it out as Medina and MidnightB wore each other out.
Medina didn't have his juice in him today and got tired.
They weren't running fast enough to wear each other out, and this race is shorter than the derby.

Medina Spirit had one of the slowest derby paces in history. If he ran fast horses and had a faster pace or if some of the better horses broke out of the gate better, that boy would have lost by lengths. He had no juice to begin with.

Race couldn't have been set up for the winner any better. Top 2 in the betting were just at each other on the lead the whole way. Credit to them for finishing so close, but winner was superb.
Watched this live and picked the winner with no money on it but it was so intense I was screaming at the TV when he let him go out of that last turn. “LATERRRRRR”
