Evidences of the Book of Mormon: Hebraisms

  • Some critics have disparaged the Book of Mormon’s language for being too repetitive. This may lead readers to wonder if it has any literary merit at all. The following video demonstrates that the Book of Mormon’s redundancies are actually sophisticated literary features which, in many cases, are similar or identical to literary techniques used by ancient Hebrew authors. A number of other Hebrew features can also be found in the text. These traits provide remarkable evidence that the Book of Mormon is indeed a masterful work of literature. It just follows ancient, rather than modern literary standards.

I study and read Biblical Hebrew, and there are literally thousands of Hebraisms in the Book of Mormon that were retained in the translation. Neither Joseph Smith nor any of his associates knew enough about Semitic languages at the time he brought forward the Book of Mormon to include these types of Hebrew literary devices in the book. This is one of many evidences of the book's divine origins.

      Leo Duren.
      Hi, Leo!
Shouldn't you be wondering how a book (Book of Mormon), written in "Reformed Egyptian" (according to Joseph Smith, Jr.), contains "Hebraisms"?
I'm not the Biblical scholar you seem to be, but that's the first question I asked when I first heard about the BoM "Hebraisms".
Is the question inappropriate or stupid? Please explain.

    • @floridaoceancurrents
      @floridaoceancurrents 3 роки тому +17

@@42apostate No, it's neither inappropriate or stupid. Great question. The answer is that the content and grammatical structure were Hebrew based (Nephi and other BofM writers document that they were taught and understood Hebrew, although the Nephite Hebrew evolved over the centuries), but the Reformed Egyptian characters were just the written vehicle used to communicate the language in writing.

Incidentally, although these traits and literary tools in the Hebrew languages of the old testament, for native English speakers, they also happen to be indicative of a poor grasp of written grammar, which definitely fits the profile of a rural farm boy with a limited education. Records of Joseph Smith's young life indicate that he had enough literary exposure to be more than capable of fabricating something like the Book of Mormon, while having enough limitations regarding his education that his grammar would reflect such mistakes and shortcomings. If parallelisms were such an integral part of the translation in terms of preserving the original feel of the source material (which never existed to begin with), then it would have been made known then, not now by apologists who are trying desperately to resist the undeniable prognosis being reached by modern science that religion and god are human fabrications. This is nothing more than a shallow attempt to lend credibility to one of the most successful scams of 19th century America.

He wrote the book in his 20s. Where are you getting "farm boy". His mother states, he can quote chapters of the bible and so he can clearly read. I find it weird that the book of mormon is written in old English, parallel to the king james version. We know he ripped off the bible because he added things in the book of mormon from the bible the wernt meant to be in the bible, but Joseph smith didnt know this. With over 1000 changes since 1880s, this book doesn't tell the same story that the original one does, that god wrote.

@@calebwarren8168 interesting how you try and make him both capable yet incapable of doing what he did. When the grammar he use is proper for how he used it in a book fundamentally claim to be a record of the Hebrews. He should use Hebrew grammar, not English grammar. I know you completely missed that in your diatribe. But the thing that this video does not touch on is the number of Egyptian isms bitter in the Book of Mormon, such as we turned our back to the land. That is a uniquely Egyptian phrase. Because for a long time, Hebrews and Egyptians, before what we understand to be the dynastic period, had a very close relationship. So much so that if you read ancient documents you realize that the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza was Enoch. That knowledge is common in the Middle East and has been common in the Middle East for several thousand years.

WONDERFUL! Thank you for sharing this. You cover a lot of ground in this video. It is remarkable to me that chiasmus in the Book of Mormon was not discovered until 1967--but after decades of reading the Book of Mormon, and not discovering it without it being pointed out to me--and likewise with the Bible--I consider chiasmus alone as outstanding evidence that the Book of Mormon is an ancient Hebrew literary narrative--as authentic as the book of Matthew in the Bible, with its chiasmus as well--add ALL the parallelism and other Hebraisms discussed in this video, the internal literary evidence is essentially irrefutable. Of course, critics and opponents will continue to doubt its authenticity, as they doubt the historicity of the Bible and of Jesus Christ Himself--seemingly no matter what. The strongest evidence of the Book of Mormon continues to be the witness of the Holy Ghost, and I suppose that will be the case until the end of time, when we actually meet the Savior and the other authors of this book of scripture, the word of God. I testify that the Book of Mormon is true. I know it! Thank you.. :)

Why couldn't you pick up the Bible and read it, like you did the BOM? That is where you can read first hand accounts of Jesus Christ by his apostles. @@meditationmusic8654 well to tell you the truth I have read both. As well as our modern day church history and about 90% of our modern day prophets talks. Our history of our church is found in the Doctrine and Covenants book of scripture as well as the Pearl of Great of Price which helps to understand the Bible itself because the Bible has been done over so many times. But back to the Bible. I am currently teaching about the old testament and I have a strong testimony that it is true to a certain degree like the Book of Mormon. The only exception is that the one book is older and has been rewritten 3 times more than the other and the old testament has certain attributes that are not true because that truth was not yet discovered such as sacrificing at the alter. Which is kind of a bad example but do you see what I mean? As members of the church we believe that both books are true we just believe the Book of Mormon is more accurate than the Bible. Sacrificing at the alter was a foreshadow of christ's atonement, the unblimished Lamb, please read " the super of the lamb" by Dr Scott Haun, explaines it very well. Mayan cities were known of and found LONG BEFORE Joseph Smith came on the scene. The Spanish found the Inca/Maya/Aztec in the mid 1500s.
Also, Archaeologists were investigating Mayan ruins long before Smith and his "gold plates" were ever heard of.

I was no more impressed with it the 12th time than I was the first time!
(But, like a brainless sheep, I went along with the Mormon crowd.)
My favorite story was when God commanded Nephi to murder Laban (behead him) while Laban was passed-out DRUNK. (1Nephi 4)
Very inspiring story! God commands us to not kill/murder...and then turns around and COMMANDS Nephi to murder Laban. WTF??
If you read the story, ask yourself how Nephi was able to get Laban's clothes off him without getting any blood on them?
(I've butchered cows and pigs, and when you cut their throats the blood spews EVERYWHERE!!)

Davey Jones It was the only way. Nephi and his brothers had asked and Laban for the plates tried to murder them calling them thief's, they tried trading the plates with gold and silver and other presous things and Laban tried to kill them calling them thief's again taking their wealth when they escaped. Nephi didn't want to do it even. But it was better for One man to die then millions loose the chance for salvation and eternal happiness.

      RE: Laban's murder:
*Humans* may conclude murdering Laban was "the only way".
I'm sure that a loving God could have easily come up with several other solutions...like, perhaps, a heart attack or alcohol poisoning or even a covid19 virus! OR, God could have transported the plates of brass to Nephi, unbeknownst to Laban where no murder was needed....rather than laying the guilt for a murder on Nephi.
One other thing that doesn't compute...
Please explain how the brass plates would/could save "millions", who might otherwise "lose their chance for salvation and eternal happiness".
      IOW.
Didn't the Nephites have living prophets with God's saving priesthood that could receive the revelation needed to do the job?
If so, it seems to me books and "plates" would be unnecessary.
If murder was the best solution God could come up with....He certainly DOES WORK in mysterious ways! :)

What is the importance of this subject for our understanding of the New Testament? It means that translators and expositors must take into account not only the common usages of Koine Greek, but also the peculiarities of what we may call “Biblical” or Jewish Greek. When we have good reason to suppose that an expression in the New Testament reflects a Hebrew idiom, then it should be interpreted as if it were “Hebrew in disguise.” In this manner we correctly apprehend the meaning of many words and expressions in the New Testament.

the phrase "and it came to pass" means something, and that meaning is not "uh uh and uh then uh let me think of something good"
for one thing, the meaning of the phrase "and it came to pass" is not 'And It Came to Stay'
This idea of "It Came to Pass, not to Stay" is a great way to deal with what we might call our "troubles". When you are going through a hard time, just remember, it will pass.
came to pass in the days of. Heb. v'yahi bemeyi:
    occurs 6 times
it is a grammatical expression that foreshadows events. it always marks a time of trouble
    ending in blessing.
    Cp. Ruth 1. l. Isa. 7. 1. Jer. 1. 3. Est. 1.
    l. 2 Sam. 21. l (cp. v. 14).
the phrase, "and it came to pass always marks a time of trouble ending in blessing.
for a book that was supposed to be a condensed version of history transpiring over hundreds of years, it's really inexcusable that it took up so much space. even more inexcusable seeing as how god supposedly showed every word to joseph and god should know better.
joseph smith used the expression way too much when he wrote the book of mormon..
4000 errors in the original book of mormon. the mormon church has changed it, so they do not appear in the present salt lake city version.
but there are 4000 changes which the mormon church made out of embarrassment.
it's a hard sell when the church itself is so embarrassed about it that they had to make 4000 changes and then try to pawn it off as a great literary work or a work of god.
plainly, the mormon church does not believe it came from god, or they wouldn't have made any changes to it.
more to the point, the lay membership doesn't believe it either.

or do you believe in the pre-existence of man
Doctrine and Covenants: Section 93:23, 29-33PGP: Book of Abraham - Chapter 3:18, 21-2
do you believe in Heaven or Hell taught in the Book of Mormon:
    1 Nephi 15:35; 2 Nephi 28:22; Mosiah 16:11, 27:31; Alma 41:4-8, 42:16
or do you believe in three degrees of glory
Most Saved Doctrine and Covenants: Section 76:43, 70-112
do you believe in Polygamy? it was Condemned in the Book of Mormon:
    Jacob 1:15; 2:24; 3:5; Mosiah 11:2
or do you believe you must pracice Polygamy or be damned?
    Doctrine and Covenants: Section 132:1, 37-39, 61
do you believe in baptism for the dead? it's not in the book of mormon:
    Book of Mormon: Moroni 8:22-23; 2 Nephi 9:25-26;
    Mosiah 15:24-27
in fact, moroni 8 says it's a mockery before god:
[22] For behold that all little children are alive in Christ, and also all they that are without the law. For the power of redemption cometh on all them that have no law; wherefore, he that is not condemned, or he that is under no condemnation, cannot repent; and unto such baptism availeth nothing --
[23] But it is mockery before God, denying the mercies of Christ, and the power of his Holy Spirit, and putting trust in dead works
i'm just real curious to see how a woman addresses the above problems.
will she ignore it? will she bury it in a flurry of words? the door is open.

    • @zandersturgill

In order to secure the copyright, Joseph had to apply as the "author and proprietor." The fact is, Joseph Smith was complying with federal law (see I Statutes 124, 1790, as amended by 2 Stat. 171, 1802), which dictated the words the district clerk had to write when a person was taking out a copyright on a book. It can be demonstrated historically that many translators, including those who produced the 1824 edition of the King James Version of the Bible, were listed as "Author" to conform to this law. Besides, the 1830 edition also states that the book was a translation of ancient records.
Even though Joseph Smith legally claimed his right as "author" he still inserted information making it clear that the text originated from an ancient, pre-written "abridgment" that came forth to the modern world "by the gift and power of God" and through an act of "interpretation" or translation. He indicated no less than six times that he was the translator of the text.

Really? So in order to "restore" the church , he had to copywrite the word of God? So, then whenever an archeologist finds a historic relic he must apply for a copywrite or patent on it? So when the Rosetta stone was found, and it allowed ciphers the ability to translate Egyptian (real, not reformed) hyrogliphs , the translations are copywrite protected by the translator?? Ridiculous on its face. Gods word CANNOT be a copywrite protected work of a man. Of course the Mormon man god person did yield to federal law with regards to plural marriage, so maybe.. No.. A copywrite only applies to original works and creations to protect authors and inventors from theft of intellectual property. Smith didn't care anything about breaking federal law, his theocratic commune and subsequent arrest and death can easily demonstrate that.

@@donaldsp360 It was the law, and Joseph compiled with the law, just like those who produced the 1824 Bible. Is the 1824 Bible less the Word of God because it's compilers had to file copyright?
The first edition of the Book of Mormon contained a transcript of the secured copyright making this clear:
Northern District of New York, to wit:
"BE IT REMEMBERED, That on the eleventh day of June, in the fifty-third year of the Independence of the United States of America, A. D. 1829, JOSEPH SMITH, JUN., of the said District, hath deposited in this office the title of a Book, the right whereof he claims as author, in the words following, to wit: "The Book of Mormon: an account written by the hand of Mormon, upon plates taken from the Plates of Nephi. Wherefore it is an abridgment of the Record of the People of Nephi; and also of the Lamanites; written to the Lamanites, who are a remnant of the House of Israel; and also to Jew and Gentile; written by way of commandment, and also by the spirit of Prophesy and of Revelation. Written, and sealed up, and hid up unto the Lord, that they might not be destroyed; to come forth by the gift and power of God, unto the interpretation thereof; sealed by the hand of Moroni, and hid up unto the Lord, to come forth in due time by the way of Gentile; the interpretation thereof by the gift of God; an abridgment taken from the Book of Ether. Also, which is a Record of the People of Jared, which were scattered at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people when they were building a tower to get to Heaven: which is to shew unto the remnant of the House of Israel, how great things the Lord hath done for their fathers; and that they may know the covenants of the Lord, that they are not cast off forever: and also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile, that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting Himself unto all nations. And now if there be fault, it be the mistake of men; wherefore condemn not the things of God, that ye may be found spotless at the judgment seat of Christ.-By Joseph Smith. Jun. Author and Proprietor."
In conformity to the act of the Congress of the United States, entitled, "An act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned;" and also the act, entitled, "An act supplementary to an act, entitled, "An act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned, and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other prints."
      R. R. LANSING
Clerk of the Northern District of New York"
It would be unreasonable if Joseph Smith were to apply for the copyright and assign "God" or "the angel Moroni" as the "author and proprietor". Your complaint is not a serious issue, but merely an effort to find fault. Besides, the 1830 edition also states that the book was a translation of ancient records.

@@daveyjones9930 yeah the image that is up is a bit funny. It has nothing to do with what we’re taught about other aspects of the translation process so I can see why many make this a tripping point to the authenticity of Joseph Smith and the translation. It’s very interesting that people do not take the time to read the released history (since the 1800’s) that already discusses the process used to translate, and what we’re told already during our Sunday school classes on how the translation occurred when it comes up during those lessons (very seldom).
Frustratingly, I think people think the church is named the Church of Joseph Smith but it isn’t. It’s named The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because we believe in, follow, study, learn about and discuss Jesus Christ in church. We talk about His gospel, His commandments, His atonement, His love and sacrifice and how we are to get back to him. Joseph’s name comes up occasionally when talking about the restoration, translation of any records that speak about Christ, and some clarity given to forgotten Christian teachings that were restored via Joseph. But, Joseph’s name is not in the name of the church he helped be restored...as much as many of the antis want it to be it’s just not.

@@daveyjones9930 We do not claim that Jesus founded the LDS church, its very clear what we claim. Jesus setup the outline of His gospel when on earth. We believe that church, its leaders, the fullness of the gospel was lost after He was crucified and his apostles were violently murdered. We do claim that Joseph was called to restore Jesus’ lost church organization to earth, when the original keys given to the apostles with Jesus being the cornerstone in His time being restored to Joseph to begin the new era of the fullness of the gospel. Hence the LATTER DAY SAINTS of the Church of Jesus Christ.
Also, putting name of Jesus on a whorehouse is nothing like what we claim. That’s an invalid comparison. Proof is in every detail of the restored church; priesthood keys are there, correct teachings lost for several hundred years were clarified and are there, apostles and prophets called by God and leading the church via revelation are there, covenants and sealing are there, baptism by emersion the way Christ taught us by those of age is there, consistency is there no matter where you go in the world you see and hear pretty much the same teachings and I could go on.
The ancient scripture that Joseph the prophet (like Moses the prophet and the Ten Commandments for example) translated into what would become The Book of Mormon is valid proof to any who will search with spiritual eyes and ears to the veracity of our claims. You don’t have to take our word for it. Moroni 10:3-5
3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

There is a very scientific claim in this video with a very unscientific approach. That is, despite the fact that Joseph was taught the bible from youth and that hebraisms happen by chance, there is still evidence of Hebrew origin in the book of Mormon because of the sheer quantity of hebraisms. Firstly, there needs to be a satisfactory approach to what is significant enough to constitute a hebraisms, then simply compare the amount of hebraisms found in the book of Mormon to those found in other books that attempt to mimic the style of the bible (of which there actually are many). You see how you have made only stated a hypothesis (that the sheer quantity of hebraisms is evidence of its ancient origin) and then assumed that the hypothesis proves itself?

I am a bit confused - the plates were written in Reformed Egyptian NOT Hebrew. We are told Reformed Egyptian was used because it was a more compact language. If you are going to carry the plates from Central American to New York via Manti, Utah then you want to reduce the size and weight by using a more compact language.
Since LDS schools have not been able to find any Reformed Egyptian in either the old world or new world no one knows how well Hebroisms would have been preserved when the plates were written.
Second, the Church now teaches that that Joseph Smith used a seer stone and hat to receive the revelation that produce the Book of Mormon. Check out the Church’s essays. The plates were not even in the room. (The Church’s essays are five clicks into the Church’s homepage so you have your work cut out to find them.)
While the revelation/translation process is not fully known, if one assumes that the plates played a part in the revelations then that raises some issues. One issue is that the Hebroisms would have been preserved in Reformed Egyptian.
Lehi’s group left Jerusalem about 600 B.C. While Nephi did get the brass plates, other writings would have been minimal. Mulek led a group from Jerusalem in about 587 B.C. They most likely brought little if any writings. Trying to preserve a language with minimal written materials is difficult.
The plates were hidden around 400 A.D. During that 1,000 year period Reformed Egyptian must have played a significant role in writing or while else why keep it. The assumption that people would have only spoken Hebrew while keeping records in Reformed Egyptian may not be valid.
Due to DNA evidence, the most probable narrative is that Lehi’s people can in contact with a large native population. Because the new arrivals had superior technology they became the ruling class and stayed the ruling class even after Christ came and all the groups became one people and live peacefully for 200 years. As the ruling class, the decentness from the Old World would have preserved Hebrew but talked to the native in new world languages. That would explain why Hebrew was not spoken by any native groups that encounter Europeans.
Yes, you tell a good story but the story does not match with the store of how the plates were written or translated.
There is no evidence that Reformed Egyptian existed in either the old world or new world. The plates were written in Reformed Egyptian not Hebrew.
There is no evidence that any group in the Americans spoke or wrote in Hebrew.
There is no evidence that any group in the Americans used a written language that was based on Hebrew or Egyptian. The only pre-Columbian written language was Mayan, which is not based on any other writing system.

It's a fair question. The way to answer this is to see if he displayed such deep knowledge of such things. Being a very low educated farmer, and young, it's hard to imagine him knowing any of this. There's no evidence that he had such Hebraism books in his position to learn these things. There's no evidence that he had time to sit down and study it all enough. Even the scholars in that time weren't even recognizing these many of these things. There were only a few books about Chiasmus at that time, and just one published in the United States. Considering that he translated the Book of Mormon in only 90 days, it's even more impossible to think he somehow remembered all this stuff as he was dictating words to a scribe, with his head buried in a hat. Why didn't Joseph brag about Chiasmus and other parallelisms in the Book of Mormon afterwards? All this is evidence that he simply didn't know. This video, by the same organization that made the video we are commenting on, summarizes what I said. Remember, this is only about Chiasmus, just one of the paralelisms in the Book of Mormon.

And that Jesus existed as far back as you can go, before time existed, and nothing exist without Jesus, not a single atom, yet, Mormon church believe the opposite, because the Mormon teachings changed, from Trinitarian faith, into falsehood, polytheistic and lawbinding, where Jesus sacrifice plays one role beside the ordonances of the Mormon church, where you need to do certain things, to fulfil these other rituals that have nothing to do with grace, yet they are required in order to become a god one day, even if that contradicts Jesus words, that we will be as angels. Much more can be discovered how fals the originator of Mormon's church was, how he was inconsistent and a false prophet, and did evil things. Jesus said my sheep hear my voice and they follow me not Joseph Smith and his crazy 4000 mistakes in the Book of Mormon and his 39 wives of which 10 were already married that's disgusting not to mention the two that were only 14 years old. And the point is all I'm doing is informing you the church is from a false prophet which is going to send you all to hell. How much more loving can I be? If you realize somebody was going to slip and fall off a cliff would you not reach out and tried to pull them back from their fall? Granted I can't save you that's only from the grace of God my job is to Simply warn you and disciple the truth which only comes from the word of God not the Book of Mormon not the pearl of great price not the doctrine of Covenants not the history of the church. If you have the truth what do you have to lose watch a non bias video that just speaks facts it's called the Bible verses The Book of Mormon you can you to it enjoy. Oh and by the way instead of the finger doesn't Jesus say love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you??? You probably aren't far off to give you the benefit of the doubt but at this present time you don't have all your biblical theological Paws in the litter box.😿

A very well researched and professionally presented video. Now that the LDS church has published essays on Joseph Smith's polygamy (see LDS.org), perhaps you could, now, turn your meticulous gaze toward this thorny subject. Of particular interest, to both church members and non-members alike, would be the exact number of wives Joseph had (official estimates state that there were between 30 to 40); how many were already married when they became a wife of Joseph's, and if any of them were 14 years old at the time of their marriage to Smith. Also, his relationship with Fanny Alger might merit scrutiny; Oliver Cowdrey certainly had some thoughts on the matter, as did Emma Smith.
It's a broad and bewildering area of debate that will undoubtedly benefit from the forensic skill that you have so clearly demonstrated in your presentation.
    Every blessing,
    Adrian.

Jesus Christ asked His disciples a question concerning His identity. Peter answered correctly. But the key of the lesson is how Peter came to his conclusion. No man told him this. Man can not be trusted. Whether educated or not. All men and women have the capacity to lie. It is only through the light of Christ and Holy Spirit that one can receive an absolution to such a question. Every other choice is subject to change. Though exciting and very entertaining to watch the educated debate, it all vain. I feel like I’m on a roller coaster that goes up and down and in circles, truly going no where. So, have fun.

This is indeed a very compelling and under appreciated argument in favor of the Book of Mormon's authenticity.
However, it does fail to take into consideration the fact that Joseph Smith was not alone during its alleged translation, his accomplice Oliver Cowdrey was allegedly inscribing the words Joseph Smith read out loud to him.
Oliver Cowdrey was associated with a the author of a book called "Views of the Hebrews," a book that was published before the Book of Mormon came into fruition which bears grammatical and thematic similarities to the Book of Mormon.

Beyond pure speculation based upon your circumstantial evidence, there is no indication of a connection between View of the Hebrews, Oliver Cowdery, and the Book of Mormon. In other words, it's just a claim you have, with no evidences.
The historical records seems to indicate otherwise. Oliver was only 20 years old. His records show a standard upbringing. He never knew Joseph Smith until a day before beginning to translate. He had only heard of Joseph through Josephs family just a bit prior to meeting.
Furthermore, have you even read the View of Hebrews? Beyond a few similarities that are easily explained by their biblical similarities, the books approach such a topic very differently. It's funny that critics still hold to the "View of the Hebrews" claim, when it's not even provable.

Yeah the 116 pages were lost. So Joseph had to start from the beginning with a new translator he had never met before. And this time the story was different.
Also, it wasn’t really 116 pages. That’s just a label he used for convenience.
And the 116 pages were only a small percentage of the entire Book of Mormon

Joseph Smith was imitating the scriptural style of the KJV Bible, so of course you’re going to find construct states, negative questions, etc. A contemporary example of a known non-ancient text that was intentionally written in the KJV scriptural style is The Late War Between the United States and Great Britain. This book was distributed in schools around the time Joseph Smith was a boy, so he would know about it. The First Book of Napoleon is another example of being written in the scriptural style, the first chapter reads just like the BoM.

You seemed to of left out the Egyptianism elements, the primary example that comes to mind is when they were leaving they made the comment that they were turning their backs to the land. That is a unique structure used by Egyptians. Being that that's where Lehigh had been trained as a scribe. Much kind of nation of the Book of Mormon comes from the concept of reformed Egyptian. That was a poor choice of words as the script probably used Egyptian and some Hebrew symbolism as well as more simplistic symbolism such as I hand in certain positions or a foot to connote application or to stand or walk.
Others point out that Native Americans are not Hebrew and some disputations have occurred as to the origin of the Native Americans. Know where does the Book of Mormon state that all of the tribes of Native Americans are Hebrew. All that is clearly evident is that these are stories of these specific tribes, and the fact that they had increased in number while in the land. Although some church members have asserted that all of them are remnants of Israel that very well may not be the case. But the fact that many of the tribes engaged in Hebrew practices, even according to William Penn they followed the Feast of the Passover and the Festival of the Tabernacle.
