Nice comparison! I was contemplating an upgrade from Nighthawk to the TPlink mesh - very helpful!
Thanks to your explanations via videos, I have bit the bullet and went with the TP-Link Omada pieces - OC300 (a few bucks more than the 200 but has USB3 and built in power), the ER605 router, the EAP660HD access point, and for now, the TL-SG2210P switch. As prices come down and the need for 2.5M becomes necessary/wanted, I think the system will be ready to easily either add to or replace the 1G switch. My main reason for upgrading from an ASUS RT-AC68P router combo was to get better WiFi to TVs/Rokus (weak signal to the other side of the house) and to add video camera security around the house. A secondary reason is that I'm 70 years old now and wanted to have a long life system because I don't know how long I will be able to crawl around the attic! HAHA. The system has POE to help with less wiring, can be configured with a few VLANs (Main, Guest, and IoT), and the speed and bandwidth potential to keep everything going smoothly (I hope!).
I'm running a single eat660HD and it's been an amazing upgrade compared to my isp provided 802.11ac all in one box. I have the wifi turned off on it and just using it for DHCP and such on my network. I've gotten 800Mbps down/upload when in the same room doing speed test on the 5ghz network on my galaxy s22 ultra. Have 1Gbps down/up fiber to the home. Nice review video.

tldr multiple, well-placed APs with a wired backhaul is worth it IMO
I redid my parents' home network several years ago. They previously had a single AP in a central location in their 2000-ish ft2 house. The problem is it is a long house, and once you got towards the far ends of the house, there were a lot of dead spots. I ran a couple of network cables to both ends of the house and installed a couple of UAP-AC-LITEs. Having 2 decent APs located closer to users has been so much better than a single, powerful AP, both in terms of achievable speeds and coverage. They've had no problems with their setup, so I have no plans to upgrade them to AX equipment. They plan on building a guesthouse in the backyard in the next few years, so I'll have to run fiber out to it and install another AP. Other than that, I don't foresee a need to make major changes to their network.

First off nice video. This was very useful information\video that I can use to explain this to others, with WiFi issues. Personally I'm running an OPNsense firewall/router on BYO baremetel with a Ruckus Unleashed R510 AP. All interconnected Brocade 6610-48P.
Something cool about the TP-link mesh system is that it can be used in access point mode, so it allows more flexibility with where you put your mesh points.

I am running the Netgear Orbi Tri-Band Mesh AX6000 WiFi Mesh System (RBK852). This is my second Netgear Orbi mesh system. Both have been rock solid. However, I am considering moving to an access point system in the future to give me some advanced functionality and features that you don't get with an off the shelf system.

I love my mesh system. I picked up the TPlink XE200 mesh system, and with my PC plugged into the hub unit, I get a solid 1-1.2GBPS down, and around 800MBPS upload, using a dedicated wireless backhaul. And it's just a matter of time, before I upgrade to their Wifi 7 mesh system,. for even better speeds. And the great thing is, I'll still be able to use the old mesh units as additional hubs, to completely eliminate any dead spots.

The 615-Wall is a GREAT product for my office it gives me 3 physical gigabit ports and a wifi6 ap on a single gigabit backhaul to my 'network core' they're designed for the hotel/accomodation industry but they're a really neat little unit to have on your desk
Interesting. My setup is a WDS star using wifi 5 ac bridge to main router from other routers upstairs and downstairs. The main router has its own SSID the other routers connect to it. However, the routers themselves have a different SSID than the main. Since using wifi 5sc only for the main, all connections are a consistent 400 to 540 mb. Not bad. Low ping and wire like without wire. This way, there is no crosstalk between points. (To be fair, which is why I did what I did....)
One thing you didn't mention is WDS.
Yes, it is slower, but very reliable in my opinion.
The other routers act as access points and work as intended.
This one omission makes me wonder why WDS is "obsolete" when it does have a purpose. Amazing.
I have the three piece XE75 the AXE5300 from Costco. My house is around 6k square feet and they’re all connected via wire so Ethernet backhaul. I’m getting great speeds all throughout the house and near maximizing the gigabit fiber speed.
I too have a similar setup and wired aka Ethernet Backhaul is the hero of the day :)

The one question I have is around security. With most routers you have options for VPN and firmware changes to make your home network secure. I didn’t get the impression that the mesh system had that flexibility.
Nah the mesh system is more of a consumer product so no fancy stuff like VPNs or VLAN management.

I'm running a UDM PRO (ubiquiti dream machine) with asus routers in AI mesh mode, and it's been rock solid for the past 3 months or so. My only gripe is that because my routers aren't ubiquiti access points, all of my connections appear to be wired lol, but hey, I'm going to upgrade the asus routers to ubiquiti access points in the future, just waiting for them to be in stock:)
Could you use a mesh system in WAP-only mode along with a pfsense router to get all the benefits of both?
I appreciate that you at least mentioned range. I'm just wanting to go out in my yard and have wifi on my headset/speakers without carrying a phone around or roku in the basement. I guess I'm not the usual case, but speed isn't the biggest thing, it's really throwing the signal farther. I have a new computer with wifi6 and just need the cheapest way to do this. My router's an old wifi 5.
Interesting observations. I have a question. Did you have a wired or wireless backhaul? I went from an AC wifi router plus wifi extender to a TP Link AX mesh system (X20). I started with a wireless backhaul but speeds were not too good on the upper floor. So I then added cables and setup a wired backhaul. This significantly increased the speed of the connection near the other nodes.

Great test! From a NORMAL home user perspective a separated UniFi or TP-Link router+AP combo is definitely overkill. Best to stay with a reputable integrated router/AP. Around 100-150 USD there are plenty of choices and the WiFi speeds are almost the same. Consumer mesh systems are viable in larger homes and for easy of use/setup. For a home lab use it is a different story altogether.
Just one thing to mention. The TP-Link AP you had in the test may be rather directional. At least for UniFi APs, you suppose to set them up on the ceiling. So if you had that just placed on the flat surface looking up, that may limit the range and signal strength significantly. Of course it is crossing over to the non standard use when you also need to think if the placement and wiring of these APs...
Walls will attenuate the signal. For me mesh works perfectly, where the router does not. Access points are inconsistent at best.
You are correct if you have a small living area with few walls.
So if I got a wap can I put it on my wall and still get results? Or should it be on a ceiling
I'm wondering if it is possible or not to connect the standalone EAP660 along with the TP-Link Mesh since they also do Mesh as well to further extend the range around the house and even outside, if needed in case someone isn't doing pfsense, opnsense, etc. I have an older model TP Link Deco Mesh System in my house and it needs an upgrade. It's not too bad, but the speeds are horrible and I have 1Gb up and down fiber.

I'm not too familiar with access points but if they can only utilize wireless connectivity I would go for a mesh system especially if you can go with a wired backhaul and you are a gamer. My friend and I both noticed higher download speeds on our consoles using a wired connection to the additional mesh node. Rather using a wired backhaul or wireless connection to the main node.
I guess it would of been interesting to have seen that utilized in this video as well.

for the price of the mesh system you could buy 2-3 AP which are plugged with 2.5 gb each.... which kinda makes it the better choice in my opinion....

I have two Archer C2600 routers created a wireless bridge on 2.4 GHz with 50 Mbps connection range over 300 ft with houses in between.
The TP-Link EAP660 is also mesh capable as are many other of the Omada access points. If you need 2 or more access points TP -Link looks to be a very cost effective and powerful solution.
Nice video! Are there any mesh systems I can use without a modem? I have fiber internet - no modem. I currently have an older netgear router + range extender. I have some issues with the different connections and wanted the mesh system to eliminate that, but it seems like a modem is required.. ?
Modem is not necessary with mesh systems, using the XE75 Deco without the modem.
Will you be testing the EAP670? Maybe compare to other EAP APs?
We have a 3 node mesh system and then a private separate network 2nd router for security and smart home items
I'm using a single Asus RT-ACRH13 wifi-5 router. I have a 300 Mbps internet service. 16 devices attached, but some of the devices are wired directly to the router. This router is great for anyone with 300 or less internet service.
One thing you forgot to mention, for users with basic needs, the ISP provided router & WiFi might be adequate.
Also, many access points support VLANs and multiple SSIDs, so if you want guest WiFi and more that's a consideration. Of course, there's no reason you can't have more than 1 AP. Some APs also support mesh configuration.
As for my network, I have a cable modem in bridge mode, which provides a 500/20 connection, but it's usually much better than that. I run pfSense on a Qotom mini PC, wit i5 CPU, 4 GB memory, 64 GB SSD and 4 Gb Ethernet ports. I also have a Unifi AC-Lite AP.

I have a tp link deco mesh ac1200 my main deco (Ethernet) Speedtest is 500 down 300up but the other two AP my down/up decreases 50% to 70% based on distance so how can I improve?
One day, I want to go OpenSource Router and Firewall. But for now I use several Asus routers. The newest one is the router, while I set the older ones to AP mode. I do not like "Mesh" set ups because you lose bandwidth.
Since I have an older home, I use MOCA 2.0 as my home backbone. Lol.
Honestly, ASUS (in my case running Merlin) are solid choices, and I'm still running one as my main router for now. I would also like to build a new low-ish power router capable of 10 Gbps, or maybe I'll settle on 2.5 Gbps for now (since my Internet connection isn't even to 1 Gbps yet.

We have a 3600 sq ft 2 story home. With a outdoor space we use in the summer. I need to do something different with my Wi-Fi. We just have our iSP modem with Wi-Fi it is no longer meeting our needs. Any recommendations for a mesh system? I’d like to have coverage in our outdoor space.
what about the ever popular BUDGET mesh setup? Aka reuse older/cheaper routers for more range and upgrade with whatever you can get for cheap? Should test with what you have at home and show the results. After all they can be quite common finds!
Is your Qnap switch managed? Logging into my recently added M2108-2c has been a failure. Switch is working well with the default configuration, but it has refused connection to 4 different browsers with every security feature I could find turned off and all ports open. Frustrating...
I've tried direct connecting after a hard reset. Connecting with a router and only one pc and the switch plugged into it. I have a serial cable on the way, so we'll see what I can do with putty...ugh. The pains of getting multigig up and running on the cheap...lol.
Im confused my powerline adapter (Wired) is giving 80mbps but the mesh has an ethernet port on the back which i connected to my console which is giving 466mbps. Is mesh more reliable/consistent than powerline adapter ? I thought powerline would be more consistent and reliable since it uses the house electrical wiring ?
Right now I'm running all in one device form my ISP but when my homelab has started growing I've realised it su*ks... Now I'm going to build my own router on old dual Opteron motherboard which I already have. Of course It will be OPNsense VM on Proxmox because this machine will also be a NAS (Yeah, I'm concidering about use TrueNAS Scale but I love Proxmox as hypervisor and TrueNAS Core in VM and passtrough hard drives to it can be also a good IDEA), and I'm still looking for access point device to make it all working perfect. Very good video! Hi, I have VirginSuper Hub3 here in the UK set in modem mode, allowing a Tp Link Archer C7 ac1750 to control WiFi. Since I got this set up my WiFi has been really stable, however I need to go the Mesh way, after I installed Wireless Security cameras outdoors needing to boost my signal 2.4ghz.. I am looking at Tplink mesh nodes or Tenda nova Would you know how best to set up either using my Tp Link router? Hoping you get this message.. Ray.

can I run a extender from my Netgear ac2600? My house is small but cut up, Lot's of wall's. Router is in the front of the house, and we have tv's and computers in the back end of the house that kinda suffers with buffering. We have 1 gig fiber optic

I have a doubt about mesh systems...if i connect the Mesh router to another Mesh router "satellite" by a WIRED BACKHAUL What is the difference between connecting the Mesh router to an Access point like the NETGEAR WAX630E?
The big difference is that both mesh routers will advertise the same ESSID(wireless network name) and do fast roaming between them as you move around the house. (same thing applies to the omada/ubiquitiy stuff

Don’t consumer asus wifi routers offer a mesh option if you want to toss more asus devices at your wifi problems ?
Deco should give best results if you don’t make any changes in the Deco app on the phone, eg QoS settings, renaming devices etc.. if u use any such feature or make any changes from the phone app - the speeds drop significantly!! Am using the XE75 without any problem!! Just use the phone app to add deco’s & nothing else.. don’t use any other fancy options!! Same goes for all new TP link AX routers and Deco’s..
sorry if this is a dumb Q but does Cat 6 and wifi 6/6e have any correlation? I know Verizon just installed a Cat 6 modem with its appropriate Cat 6 wiring in my home.
Not a dumb question at all. There is no correlation, though. Cat6 is great to have in your home as it future-proofs your LAN for 10Gb speeds. WiFi6/6e is a while ‘nother beast that will depend on many factors (frequency bands, antennas, client speed, interference) to determine the overall speed you’ll see.

I’m done with store bought Mesh kits. My home is wired, so it’s back to routers for me. Google really dropped the ball with making the OnHub EOL which was a huge factor in driving my decision.
I purchased the TPLink Deco W7200, and I am leaning towards returning it. I also purchased the TPLink Archer AC4000, because it went on sale which I preferred all along. The only WiFi 6 device that I have is a MacBook, and the trade offs are:
dual core vs quad core (I have many devices so this may haunt me)
speed is debated due to the fastest channel being wireless backhaul
Great video . The tp link deco wifi6e mesh costs 400 dollars here for a pair. It's disappointing that if you use the 6ghz for the backhaul , you can't connect any 6ghz device sort of meaning that practically its a wifi 5 mesh. What happened to all the marketing and propaganda about so many channels and bandwidth in the new 6ghz range? Couldn't they use that for the mesh and the devices simultaneously?
It does in fact give you the option to choose whether you want to use the 6ghz frequency for connecting devices and as wireless backhaul. It's just set to be used as the wireless backhaul by default.
Hi! Thanks for making this video. It's been helpful to create a tunnel to my raspberry pi. I'm trying to make a "cloud" like service by running vsftp on it and I seem to be unable to route traffic to the sftp server running on it. While the tunnel runs fine, I always get a connection timed out error whenever I try to connect to it from any ftp client like filezilla or nautilus. Any idea on how to route sftp connections using cloudflare tunnels?

I play ps4 upstairs and my router is downstairs what is the best thing I can get to get better connection
I live in a truck and caravan with 4g wifi. This has always been perfectly fine. But then I started with smart home devices and the holes started showing. Both the truck and caravan are aluminium and when both vehicles doors were closed I started getting connection errors in the smart devices.
I figured a mesh system would sort it out so I got a dlink x1870 3 pack. Installed and everything worked perfectly until I shut the doors and hit the same situation as before with connection errors.
Then I connected the 2 routers with a cable and everything was all good even with the doors closed.
But now, when the doors are closed the wifi smart devices in my truck for some reason connect to the extender mesh wifi router in the caravan instead of the master in the truck with them and I again hit connection errors.
I thought mesh systems were supposed to be smart enough to connect to the router with the best signal not pick the one with the weakest signal!
So all that money spent and the situation has not changed and dlink help don't seem that interested in helping. So I no longer have any faith in mesh (or dlink) and will be splitting it up and turning the expensive mesh routers into 2 different access points. (if I can get that to work).

in example when you connect Netgear R6700 and TP-Link EAP660 you said that you can get on TP-link 1200mbps on end device but how is that possible when Netgear has 1000mbps wire connection to tplink AP?
For the test did you do multiple attempts and then average them or just run one? I would hope you did multiple test

Cool, Wifi on Viagra. Anything with a 1Gbps uplink is limited to 1Gbps, so anything claiming to have higher speeds is not being entirely honest. I now have a Qnap switch with 8x 2.5Gbps and 2x 10Gbps ports - for why, I'm still trying to convince myself of that. Do some testing on 2.5Gbps USB adapters - they seem to have problems, I have two Plugable but they drop the network every few seconds - apparently not that uncommon, and other USB adapters also seem to have problems.
In a sense, isn't it better that your old combo router dies off at the end of your property?
I mean, less interference, isn't that a big factor in how fast our wireless devices connect?

In my case, I love my PfSense because of the control, but my 10 year old salvaged TP-Link router does a perfectly adequate job of servicing my 1500sq ft home over two wireless frequencies as a re-purposed pass-through , and I am sure that is the case for many, many of your viewers. Want to save the planet? We need a new (old) way of thinking! Don't get the newest gadget just because it's new. Think in terms of function. Make the best of old stuff, squeeze the most life you can out of it, delay upgrading until slow performance becomes a problem. Unless you REALLY need that mesh system, you don't need a mesh system just to keep up with the Joneses.
Let's re-learn to reuse and re-purpose, and let's save the world that keeps us.

I'm still left confused at what's best, but I still think AP's are better than mesh from my research, but I'm still confused how a router with your modem can be better than a AP...

I tried a 6e router, could not get consistent coverage in my house. I switched to mesh, works perfectly everywhere in the house. Would never go back to access points, or routers.
Which system did you go for? Do you have issues with roaming?
Deco 6e Mesh, I have 3 satellites in my house, no dead zones. Never had an issue with roaming, just works. Only minor downside, is they are expensive.@@TheBlooRayChannel
Thank you so much for this video, however, I am an old lady that works from home, and I need major help. I moved to a tiny town in Northern AZ that has no major internet providers, so I am using their top-of-the-line internet service, which is no service at all, honestly. I'm afraid of losing my job because the internet & phone go in & out all the time. I mean it goes out for several minutes every hour, sometimes lasting for over 30 minutes! I can't work from home with this horrible internet, and I have no clue what to do. I've researched mesh, router, booster, etc., and I am more confused now than I was before. Do I purchase one of these items and keep my internet service provider & their router? How does this work, actually? Do I purchase one of these and just plug it into my current internet company's router? I don't do gaming or anything like that; I work from home and watch movies/TV from my computer, (no cable). I would greatly appreciate any help/advise you can give to me. Thank you so much! 🙂
So your internet going out so often could be an issue with a few things. It could be your ISP being trash, it could be your router going in and out, it could be your PC. If it’s your ISP then nothing you purchase will fix that and you may want to look at signing up for Starlink. If it’s your router then a higher quality router or mesh system will fix it. If it’s your pc then well that’s another troubleshooting session.

I have a good gaming router and very confused on what to do for the best. I have my sky Q box and Ps5 hardwired to the router in my lounge but the WiFi upstairs is very poor. I don't know whats best to buy to get the high Internet speeds I pay for upstairs also. I still want to keep my devices downstairs hardwired to my router. Would an access point mounted on the upstairs ceiling work and can I still use the same ssid name and password as my router has? Or can a mess system be added to my router and still keep my devices hard wired to my router? I don't know anything about Internet hope iv explained ever ok. Thank you

@Justin Richford it's probably okay to just add an access point to your setup in that case. I would really only look into a mesh system if something needs hard wiring or you have a way to hardwire a mesh node upstairs.
You can always get another router and put it in bridge/access point mode instead of getting a whole new mesh system.
@@dbzforever1986 Ok great. Would the access point be hardwired from the router to upstairs and then the access point just boost my WiFi signal for up there. Would it still be all on the same WiFi name etc so I don't have to go into WiFi settings on devices every time we move around the house
@Justin Richford yeah if you use the access point method, you would set the SSID and password to be the same. If you are able to wire the access point, that would be the best. If not, you'll have to have it wireless as well. But it being hardwired would ensure that you are boosting the signal to the best of its ability.
We have tried TP Link Omada and other access points on mutiple client sites. Below average performance vs. UniFi. We always use wired access point + switch + controller format of deployment. Mesh is always a disappointment when it comes to Indian sites/ constructions.
Should have thrown in an ISP router. 99% of people will use that. Just to see how bad that can be. That nighthawk is very high end.

Comparing speeds of 3 different device types like this, is not really the best way to describe the differences between them. You are comparing the speed of 3 different products, not 3 different technologies.
They each serve a different need. A single all-in-one router is great for a small house or apartment, for people who may or may not have specific requirements for their router, as it's coverage will be fine. AP's are great for when you have specific demands for your router, one of which is a specific location for it, that may not provide a decent coverage for a larger home. The Mesh system is for people who do not have specific requirements for their router (Mesh routers are often very basic and limited in it's configuration) and also has a house to large for a single router and at the same time, do not want to lay Ethernet cable around the house.
Personally I use a decent router paired with an AP, as I have yet to try a Mesh setup I liked. Config options are limited, most have only App control and most of the Apps feels like something from Google (They make the worst apps).

@Raid Owl I’m surprised the iPerf test wasn’t better with the eap660, I’ve been thinking on getting couple of these for the house, since my current setup gives me problems with HomeKit. But I’m unsure if the performance is there for these APs!
@@emenny81 Real-world tests show better results but yeah iperf is weird over wifi, atleast in my experience.

@Raid Owl lmfao your title makes no sense a router vs AP or mesh wifi. THEY ARENT EVEN THE SAME TYPE OF A DEVICE. A router is a one thing, wifi AP and mesh are a whole different thing.
If your house is big, then you will eventually need a access point to connect to your main router, or you can just buy a mesh system.
This is much too complicated for the average consumer!
