- I've changed how far I stand to the golf ball by just a small amount and the difference is huge! I am striking the golf ball so much better and so much further with both irons and driver! I have now used this on my clients who always as How Close Should You Stand to the Golf Ball? Is there a correct distance you should stand to the golf ball? This video addresses these questions.
Golfers often have too much tension and don't fully understand whether they are too close or to far from the golf ball. I've now changed how far i stand from the golf swing. This is simple golf instruction. A lot of golfers tend to ask questions like how to hit driver straight, this can be beginner golf tips or professional, but knowing how close to stand to the golf ball is so important.
This will cover, how to stop slicing the golf all, golf grips hand position, how to hit your driver straight, hit a driver for beginners, golf driver drills, golf driver tips, golf swing drills, golf grip replacement, hit your driver further, golf set up,how far to stand from golf ball.

*I use this all the time! Great this for getting a Centred hit! 🙌🏼*
Hi Alex! With this set up, I noticed that it makes it harder to square up the club face when initiating the lower body first (correct sequence). Would you be able to make a follow up from this set up and squaring up the club face in the downswing? Thanks!
Hi. What is the manufacture of the long sleeve you’re wearing?
Thank you for this video Alex. I struggle a lot with my distance from the ball. I can’t wait to try this method and see how it can help my game.
Another winner Alex. I’ve been using process on the golf course and it not only gives me the distance from the ball more accurately, it gives me the proper bend based on the length of the club which then give me better balance.
I can’t wait to try it. Thanks Alex for another great video.
Hi Alex, a great video, I was a bit confused with the title as I was expecting something different, when I use the same method for each club (except wedges) as the shorter the club, the closer you get just using the same methodology. Which I’m happy to say you covered. 👍😎🇦🇺
A great reminder. Thanks Alex!
You have helped me fix my slice making my driver more reliable! Love your straight forward videos. Not too wordy right to the point! New subscriber. Thanks for the videos!
I needed that 🙌🏻 thanks!
I would also recommend people set up to the ball, then do a practice swing (stopping at the ball) and seeing where the clubhead is...that's how I figured out I was standing too close. Backing up a couple inches solved all the problems I was having. This has now become part of my pre-shot routine, it has worked wonders.
Alex another great back to basics! Thanks.
another fantastic lesson. Thanks from San Antonio Texas USA.
This helps a bunch, thanks again Alex...
Excellent advice. Will try this at the range first.
Great idea! will try!
Cracking video mate. So many times I crack an amazing drive (lucky to get it on the short stuff) and then second shot I bugger it up. And 10 times out of 10 it's because of my distance... can't wait to try this out .
Great ideas Alex, as usual!
Great video, I struggled with this at the range this weekend, feeling like I am too far or too close, Next weekend I will try your tip to see if it starts to bring more consistency, especially with my driver, hit too high then too low, and once in a while dead on.
Nice and simple advice as usual 👍
Great tip today, thank you. Any suggestions in regards to not taking too long a backswing? I struggle sometimes with taking my backswing back way too far and of course I don't need to tell you the kind of shots that results in. Love to see if you have a drill or any kind of suggestion for consistency in the length of backswing on full shots.
❤ Alex, this was a greatvideo!
Excellent way to get a repeatable standard set point. Thanks
The simple mechanics are usually easiest to forget..✌️⛳🏌️
Very helpful mate 👍
I've moved the ball a bit further out lately and it's been helping a lot. The closer the ball is to me the more I hit off the toe.
Two clubs at once demonstration was brilliant. Helping people see the difference.
Excellent tips, thx👍. Question - I often grip slightly tighter as I initiate my backswing & this often shuts the face - do you have any advice of a positive thought or motion to reduce the likelihood of this please?
I was a setting up too far away from the ball. Armpits over the feet- Great checkpoint for contact & balance.
Thank you alex . This has changed my son's game. Very grateful!
thats so good to hear
Interesting and helpful. Thanks. I've been watching films of Moe Norman recently and it is noticeable how far from the ball he stood. Given that he is generally acknowledged to be one of the best ever strikers of the ball, standing further back has to be worth trying.
Moe was very unique. What worked for him may not work for you. Recently, one of my playing partners commented that I was reaching too much with my driver. I agreed that I felt I was and on the next tee, I setup so my arms were hanging more down. I striped a drive farther than all my previous drives. Hit a good 3 wood and then a gap wedge to within 4 feet and made my birdie putt. Go to the range and experiment and see what works for you before doing something different on the course. Good luck!
Alex, I watch guitar and piano covers and lessons mostly but recently resurrected my interest in golf amongst all the other sports I do. you are the only one I watch and trust. you are very very good on your lessons. imagine if you did guitar lessons....thanks for, if not making my game better, I at least have the confidence in what I should be doing.
that’s very kind thank you
thanks AE.
Great tip, this has been a issue for me. I will try this! Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks legend
Question: I have 4 wedges - 48, 52 56 and 60. Theoretically, I can hit each one 100 yards varying the length of the swing. What criteria should I use to choose a club if I need to hit a 100 yarder to reach the front of the green?
Had my first lesson last week and this is EXACTLY what was pointed out to me. I was crowding the ball too much, thus hindering my natural ability to move freely. THanks for this :)
I use a spread hand ie from first finger tip to little finger tip when practicing my set up to judge the distance from the ball. Does this sound right to you Alex?
I enjoy your videos…they are short & give one or two quick tips to work on
Hey Alex - could you please give us some tips on how to play rock hard fairways, more often than not when trying to hit irons, especially wedges, i either thin or toe the shot. Am I correct in thinking you just need to divot the heck out of it to make the shot? (Evidently, the old course this week is playing rock hard and just saw someone bounce a golf ball off it.) thats how hard the courses are here. 👍🏻 thank you!
Well done alex I stand abit too far away from the ball then toe it 👏 👍 😀
I love how quick your videos are. Thanks!
Pros and cons of same length irons? You are now back to variable length irons? Why the switch back? I have a couple of sets of clubs and was thinking about making a set of same length.
I love the look of the copper finish on your irons! How does the finish last?
They last as long as they last.
I did fitting and fitter said I was too close to ball with Driver as I hit the heel on the face. However I do what you do. I assume I must be swinging over the top? It's kinda messed me up.
How far should the driver club be from the ball and should it be hovering or resting on the ground?
when i do that with my irons, the head of the club rises and it no longer lies flat i'm not the tallest then it's quite noticeable. there may be a gap at the front of the club head I already adjusted my lie when fitting.
How low should my hands be? My pro had me holding mine much lower than what felt natural, bottom of my zipper. I'll try to stick to it, but for now my driving is terrible.
This was a game changer for me! I’m hitting much better!
Love to hear that!!
Hello. I am a lefty. teachers mostly are right handed and thus use terms such as left hand, right hand. Could you use, forward hand, aft hand or something such as that? This way if can apply to everyone. Thenks. Kato
Alex good and helpful blog ,the thing that no one ever tell you is where on the ball do you look at I mean ie the driver is it the low back of the ball or just behind the ball same irons just in front of the ball 🤷🏾♂️
Driver look just ahead of ball or front of the ball and that works for me, irons I look directly at it
How do you aim with that setup though.
I stand diff each time. Sometimes I miss the ball completely and tweak my back, other I top it and others I hit the ground way before the ball.
謝謝!
👍💯Good...
definitely is a problem for me. Thanks. How do you know how much power to use on pitches and chips?
Muscle memory. Power is very individual. Once you know how far your full swing goes then adjust your takeaway using the clock method. 9 o'clock being half swing.
@The Dude's Clues that's the first time anyone has given any answer which actually helps. I tend to hold back a lot for fear of hitting it too far. Everything seems to either go half to a quarter of the distance I want or I just hit it and it goes about 3 ft. 🤷♂️. Should I pick a target on the ground where I want it to land ? Pretty new at this. Just started to play to honor my dad who passed and was into golfing big time
One thing I do that hasn't been mentioned is... When I place the clubhead down I move the handle up and down until the grooves are perpendicular to plumb. Rather than angled to plumb causing toe or heel to strike the ground and also causing the ball to go left or right. What are your views on this?
Try not to have the clubhead plumb to the ground rather try having the toe to the clubhead slightly raised and the heel on the ground at setup. There should be a small distance left over between the toe of the clubhead and the ground enough to fit a pencil underneath
@@CheddaGaming leaning the club head cause me to slightly pull the shot. I heard that the shaft bends to compensate. Perhaps one needs more club head speed.
Taller guy at 6’4 and maybe it’s a lack of hamstring flexibility but standing closer to the ball feels comfortable to me. I’m actively working on trying to stand away further with my irons and I just feel like I’m going to fall over and my balance and shots are all out of whack. If I move close again I start stroking the ball? Any tall players experience the same thing?
I would comment and help on this but i’m super small!
It's not the length of the club because they could be too long or short for your height. It's having the sole flush with the ground and then marrying your stance and grip with the angle of the shaft. If the clubs are too long you will have to choke down on the grip. If to short you will have to bend over further in your stance. If you use a single plane swing you would stand even further away from the ball. The lie angle of the club influences distance from the ball also. More upright=closer - flatter=further away. It's not as cut and dry as you represent it.
@@derekwhyle1884 the amount of downward toe flex in anything but a pro-level swing is so insignificant that you are picking at straws. A driver shot is teed up so you would have to hover the club to get your distance from the ball after which you could address the club on the ground if you wished, I wouldn't but you could.
You can’t forget about the mass of the arms and how they affect the swing and the ideal distance from the ball is when the sitting down (back on heels) address posture allows the arm+club unit hang, swing and turn over in a properly executed Vardon/Interlaced grip in perfect balance with the most consistent force on earth - Gravity. Simply grip club in air with bent elbows resting against body, bend at hips allowing arm to straight and counter-rotate against each other and the shoulder-arm-hands triangle will form a tight V connected with body at pecs. (one of Hogan’s techniques). Don’t immediately ground the club, let it hang and swing in to find balance. As it hangs let it rotate at the wrist by rotating lead arm. If it pivots like a door hinge it is hanging in balance. If it starts in balance at address like that the odds of it automatically finding and staying on a balanced swing plane greatly increase and so does the accuracy of the shots. Getting the club in balance like that with gravity before swinging it is why Hogan was such a legendarily accurate ball striker.
With longer clubs it is not possible to find balance statically because the club will hit the ground before finding balance at static address. A physics of a swing is actually similar to the olympic hammer toss where it is necessary to lean back the body mass (why static address needs to be biased on heels with lower legs as vertical as possible). So it becomes vital to take a practice swing or two to check that the static balance will still be in balance at impact and the finish.
From the ball, lower what ever club to my knee sets the right distance for me.
Was playing a round yesterday and my dad observed that my hands are way too far inside and I can’t even strike the ball properly 😢
When you hold the club horizontally you don’t stipulate the arms. In watching, it looks like you have the arms bent with your elbows at the front of your ribs. Makes a huge difference in the distance if you stretch your arms out before tilting!🏌️♂️
Which pumas are those? I like em
The shoes?

I was standing too close to the ball for a very long time and it killed my distance
to decrease the variable of ball placement, just change the width of your stance always keep your ball a iron clubhead inside your left heel, and then for your short irons wedges and maybe iron make the ball in the middle... so iron club head off your right heel as well.. as you get to the mid irons just keep the ball in the same exact spot and just make your stance slightly wider by moving your right foot slightle wider... etc with long irons woods and driver... now you will have the same point of contact.. you know should get the turf with every club just in front of a club head inside your left heel... did wonders for me.. eliminate as many variables as possible for better more consistent play... obviously this is for a RIGHT hander so for a left hander just flip it
I like the idea of playing all clubs off the left heel. It works great on the driver. On my irons I seem to pop up and thin my shots unless I play them closer to the center. Any thoughts.
@@thetruthfornow6045 well it is a club head inside the left heal, that being said, the basic cause is your weight is forward enough at point of impact.. or your not tilting that right shoulder enough on the down swing...
that being said, if going 2 club heads from left heel work from you instead of one works better so it just remember short irons narrow stance and gradually get wider as clubs get longer but keep every ball 2 clubs off the left heel
Why no stand bag?
Much prefer the light weight
I think the question is how far should the hands be from the body
A lot of people’s problems can’t be fixed with these simple tik tok/instagram/UA-cam videos. There’s no way this wouldn’t be one of the first things a new golfer would research.
Hi Alex, in gneral I would also agree to not stand too close, but then there is our good friend Rory, who helps a couple of lads in this video to gain distance and he is tweeting them to go further away in this piece: ua-cam.com/video/CdEK92u5gJc/v-deo.html what about this then?
I did write tweaking not tweeting but couldn’t edit my post for whatever reasons.
Lil over the top mate
Your young but have you heard of Moe Norman
Why why why is it...I’ll take a good tip from vids like these, then play amazing while focusing on this one point, then it goes away and I play terrible again....then another vid comes, I focus on the new tip, have another aha moment, play great....then it dissipates. Golf is frustratingly addictive
