5:20 This is incorrect, Sega was one of the pioneers of sprite scaling technology in 1981 with Turbo which used a bank of 8 voltage controlled oscillators to control how quickly graphics in the object rom were read out as the CRT scanned the image onto the screen. The VCOs generated clock pulses that read the object out of ROM, changing the frequency of the VCOs changed how long it took to draw the object. It raced the beam as they were read out so changing how fast it was read from the object ROM changed how much of the scanline was used to display each line of the sprite. In effect this was analog scaling, it was a hardware trick that didn't require complex maths to change the size of a bitmap, but it worked well enough. The same technology was later used for Buck Rogers and Subroc. Subroc also used LCD shutter glasses based 3D using a periscope that the player looked through at the screenwhile playing the game and this was back in 1983. So saying Sega wasn't into 3D before Yu Suzuki came along is patently false, they were the industry leader in 3D arcade games even before then.
I'm old enough to remember the arcade version coming out. For 1985, the graphics and sound on that machine blew me away. It took almost 8 years and several generations of home ports to finally get it right when the 32X and Saturn version came out. That arcade machine was way ahead of it's time.
No mention of the Yakuza 0 port? I'm surprised! Gotta agree though that the game holds up today because the first time I played it was in 2017 when I gave it a go in Yakuza 0. Played a little bit, then found out there was a point score task I needed to accomplish and worked to be better at it...and before I knew it, I was enjoying the game for what it was, not just as a way to earn stuff in Yakuza 0. So yeah, it's good even without nostalgia goggles.
I'm so HAPPY to finally see you do this Complete History. Space Harrier is one of my favorite Sega games of all time. Fantastic video man! I look forward to seeing your Strider video in the future.
There was a secret message in the Sega Master system port of Space Harrier. It only appeared if you put the initials ERI in all the high score rankings. A message would appear that said to mail your thoughts on this game to Sega Japan and it gave an address. The first 10 people to write in would get a response. It also asked "Can you see why you can find this message?". I've always wondered what ERI means and if anyone actually wrote in.
I had this game when I was a kid on the master system. It was fun as hell back in the mid 80s, and it's fun as hell today. So glad to see it covered here.
My local arcade had the sit in space harrier. It moved about so well and the experience was top notch, some of my best memories as a small boy in the early 90s were of playing space harrier in that arcade with my mum. So glad you reviewed this game
I played Space Harrier for first time quite recently while playing Yakuza 0 and was quite impressed with music. Pretty cool game too but 3d effect takes some time to get used to imho
Awesome, well researched stuff as always. That Space Harrier theme gets me pumped every time. And thanks for the shout outs. MāoMāo Castle will be available for everyone soon. Probably without added Mayo though, but we will squeeze a Cow or two in there somewhere ;)
Space Harrier is the first ever game I remember playing. Sitting in that arcade cabinet is one of my favorite childhood memories. The first time I was able to get to stage 4, my jaw dropped as the ceiling came down and the game sped up. Hearing him say "you're doing great" at the start of stage 2 still keeps me excited about playing the game. I even bought a (admittedly clearance sale price) 32X just to play it at home as soon as I was able to afford it. Even playing it at home no matter the port (post 32X) doesn't diminish the experience for me. This game is definitely in my top 10 games of all time. Simple concept. Great music. Great music. I say it's the perfect game for me. Part 2 is alright, but I just love the first game much more. I was lucky enough to play Planet Harriers and that is another great game, though not as much of a pick up and play style game. EDIT: And yeah the 3DS and PS2 recommendations are pretty much spot on.
There’s a spiritual sequel already out on iOS, and coming out for consoles soon, created by the legendary Yu Suzuki, called Air Twister! It even has some of the same enemies in it! It’s a really excellent game.
Every vid of Yours is a pleasure to watch. Keep at it and don't lose hope, this channel is destined to blow up. Thank You for the entertainment. Quality work, mate. Signed: One enthusiastic polish fan.
its kind of ironic how sega named one of the bosses in the master system version of the game after the man who essentially ruined sega, nakayama discontinued the mega drive early , dismissed sony's idea to collaborate on a game system and ignore the ideas of sega of america as well as authorise the early launch of the saturn in the west which damaged the saturn and caused a domino effect that led to the saturn being discontinued and fail with the dreamcast, it is all his fault and who knows where sega would have been if he was not in charge.
I'm glad this video regards the 3DS Eshop version by M2 as the best port. It is, it has a smoother framerate, lost of control/screen custom options, a level select feature, (only for levels you cleared) and more.
just wanted to say how much i love your content. it's always a part of my playlist I dub Retro Gaming Sundays. Your vids are a part of them. I love the work you do and I appreciate the amount of effort you put in each of your vids...and on the side note, Toby is so adorable
I've said this before : This video series is essentially my companion to Sega Mega Drive Classics. Giving those games context helps me enjoy them exponentially more. I recommend other NES kids turned SEGA adults do this.
That Space Harrier arcade machine with the big chair on it (at least I think it was that one - was a long time ago). When I was growing up, the local leisure center had one and I kept looking forward to being able to play it again. Good memories. I never played on many arcade machines but that was one of them.
Loved this game, I remember always playing this every time I went off to Blackpool arcades. This is available at Bury arcade club, always fun to play it, great to also see youngsters playing this and having a blast and bare in my these are kids brought up on Call of Duty and FIFA, just goes to show how well Space Harrier has studied the test of time. Once again really great video and insight to this timeless classic.
The Amstrad version actually played quite well. The line graphics were better than the alternatives because it was a little less messy. None of them were great.
Another great edition of The Complete History! I had Space Harrier 3D back in the day. What a blast! I'd recommend this game for the soundtrack alone. Also, it had a cheat code that lets you play in 2D if you don't have the gear (I didn't).
Worth mentioning the Space Harrier tribute in Bayonetta. "Welcome to MY Fantasy Zone!" Has the music and everything. One of my favorite stages in that game
for those that have the most recent (as of this posting) sega collections, its emulator has a great quick rewind function. If you just want to have a chill time Space Harrier II is actually great fun since you can easily undo the cheap ass arcady deaths it throws at you like spawning enemy shots right on top of you before you can react since the hardware couldn't properly handle everything on screen. beat the game in about 40 minutes and just have some nice cathartic fun while still getting a good rush. The challenge comes in seeing how long you can go before needing to trigger the rewind.
My introduction to Space Harrier was actually Shenmue (there's a full working arcade cabinet within the game) but after hearing that theme I've been a huge fan ever since
I absolutely love the complete history series, and after hearing you briefly mention the turbografx I immediately thought of their mascot Bonk and I realized that I would kill to see a video based around the series, I know it’s niche but then again some of your other videos, like vib ribbon are also very niche
This was a great episode. Thanks for creating it. Although Space Harrier II was ported to the MSX, the very first game never was, although Heart Soft created Vaxol, a game very much inspired by Space Harrier.
Sega Master System-Space Harrier 3D is one of the best games I own!!! I was wondering/waiting if you were going to mention it-ha... "IDA" still remains one of my all-time favorite beats too!!! Phenomenal video: Subscribed-THANK YOU!!!!!
I've said it before, but as much as you like to plug the Megadrive Classics Collection, I can only hope that the PX4/XboxOne versions have better emulation than the PC version. The PC version's emulation was always slightly inferior to the better freeware alternatives while the virtual room was a pointless performance hog, but the update released to match the PS4/XboxOne release has apparently created new issues (at least some of which have since been addressed) and drawn new complaints.
They are no better. Both the PS4 and Xbox One ports of this collection have major audio bugs, occasional stuttering video, and 4-5 frames of input lag. Enough to mess up your double jumps in Revenge of Shinobi, and make it hard to get hits off first in Golden Axe 1-3, and Streets of Rage 1-3. Why Sega didn't have M2 work on this game is strange.
Fantastic video, mate...remember playing it when it launched, if you knew a good arcade in Skegness! Played so many different console/computer versions over the years, even had a T-shirt bought by my sister back when Elite had the home version rights.
Space Harrier is the first game (aside from the pack - in Hang On/ Astro Warrior) that I played on my Sega Master System. I loved it. I still do. I still haven't been able to finish it.
Gunvalkyrie on the original XBOX felt like a Space Harrier inspired shooter. The controls are very difficult to master, but once you get it, it is a completely awesome game. Still one of my favorites. But you have to get comfortable with the controls. Keeping your Valkyrie air born takes a lot of skill and practice.
Space Harrier is an excellent candidate for a proper, modern VR entry (hopefully available to play in both the classic 3rd-person, as well as the better for VR first-person, perspectives). It would also be interesting to have two primary modes (similar to Star Fox 64) in a rails experience as well as an "all-range" style.
Space Harrier also appears in a Sega published game - Yakuza 6. As well as Fantasy Zone. In Yakuza 0 Outrun also appears as well as other Sega classics. All playable in the in-game game centres.
I would not say this series has held up, but a proper sequel would be nice. The ending of Space Harrier 2 was really a sequel bait, after all. I first encountered Space Harrier via the DS Sega All-Stars Tennis in the minigame segment, and it was what I played most of that thing. I eventually tracked down a copy of Space Harrier 2 for the genesis/mega drive when I got one years back because I wanted to play the real thing, and wasn't really disappointed. It's really nice that the game has a built-in autofire feature, so I don't have to mash the button so much.
I actually had Space Harrier on ZX Spectrum once, which was surprisingly good, compared to a lot of Spectrum ports. I've played the 32X version which is very good, and I have the PS2 remake which I've enjoyed. That main theme has such a great remix. Planet Harriers has a very similar look to Sin & Punishment, which might also make an interesting Complete History.
Daniel, I am afraid the Famicom was released BEFORE the SG-1000. So I think it is debatable whether the Mark III was Sega's first rival to the Famicom.
I'd love to see you cover "Burning Force" it only came out on the Genesis, but it had a far superior arcade port that never had a home console re-release. Not to mention people often say it's a rip-off of Space Harrier, yet as a sheltered kid I didn't even know what Space Harrier was.
Love your use of Hang-On music in your videos, always get a warm feeling when Outride a Crisis or the Hang-On title is played. :D Put in many hours in Super Hang-On for Genesis and 3DS. 20th anniversary Super Hang-On soundtrack great too.
If I had the resources, I’d make a VR sequel with a rocket cannon the player holds onto in a room with air jets blowing on you from different directions to simulate the flying feeling.
I use to work for Sterling Coin in Orlando back in the days of Arcades. I was lucky to play the first one in central Florida. Loved it but it was sold rather quickly
Ah that main theme. I should look at expanding my vinyl collection. Like Fantasy Zone, I have Yakuza 0 to thank for getting me into this game. Really good stuff.
Excellent video as always Dan. Sadly (or happily, depending on how you look at it) I first experienced Space Harrier in the full hydrolic arcade machine, so I always found home ports somewhat of a less exciting experience, and they felt very watered down. I did buy it on 32X though and had a lot of fun with it. Both that and Afterburner II were brilliant on 32X, its a crying shame they never released Outrun - that would have been a system seller imo. Oh, and yeah the music is friggin awesome, as was true on all the super scaler games.
Sin & Punishment and it's Wii sequel (especially it's sequel) are kinda/sorta spiritual successors to Space Harrier, especially because both were made by Treasure.
Thanks for this video, Daniel! As a fan I really appreciate it. Never knew there were games made for the franchise after the Genesis era. None, sadly, seem to be as creative visually as the originals. And I too would love to see Sega make a new sequel that could rock this new generation the Nintendo Switch, and other current consoles. Think you could do a video for either Y's, Shining In The Darkness, Or Phantasy Star in the near future?
Space Harrier was the first game I ever finished! On the game gear... I didn't get to play the glorious arcade perfect original until the sega saturn...
It's unfortunate that the Sega Genesis/MD Collection has sound glitches and input lag. Otherwise it would have been a great collection. Sega should have had M2 handle the emulation.
You should do the Afterburner series! It's very similar to Space Harrier. I would pay to have a Space Harrier collection or another Space Harrier Remake or Reboot.

Here come the truth bombs...
Super well said. Turbo was the a game changer for games
To be fair, he at least talked about two of the three you named.
I'm old enough to remember the arcade version coming out. For 1985, the graphics and sound on that machine blew me away. It took almost 8 years and several generations of home ports to finally get it right when the 32X and Saturn version came out. That arcade machine was way ahead of it's time.

The same!! I only know Space Harrier because of Yakuza 0 !!
Amazingly enough I never beat one of these games until just recently in Yakuza 6.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN DUDE? I HAVEN'T SEEN MANY VIDEOS FROM YOU!
It's been a while...
Just hearing the music gets me amped up!
It also has to be pointed out, Space Harrier, in addition to being in Shenmue, was also in the Yakuza series.
I'm so HAPPY to finally see you do this Complete History. Space Harrier is one of my favorite Sega games of all time. Fantastic video man! I look forward to seeing your Strider video in the future.
Announcer: Welcome to the Fantasy Zone!
Well, I guess that explains Opa-Opa's eventual cameo...
Thank you so much for making this Slope! Space Harrier is a game I hold dearly.

Oh sweet! I got space harrier 2 a few weeks ago and i was blown away and surprised how it holds up

Don't know about anyone else but that camera in space harriers is awesome.

Surprised you didn't bring up Platinum Games' loving homage to Space Harrier in the Bayonetta series...
I played Space Harrier for first time quite recently while playing Yakuza 0 and was quite impressed with music. Pretty cool game too but 3d effect takes some time to get used to imho

I loved this game on the Sega master system. I was about three years old when I first played it and I was hooked.
I want Space Harrier VR for the Oculus GO NOW!

As usual, great informative vid. Thanks DJ Slopes!!!
So that explains why Space Harrier and many of his games are in Shenmue, Yu Sazuki's magnum opis.

I’ve craved a proper Space Harrier overview for, ooh, three decades now. Thanks for delivering such a good one. 👌
I've said this before : This video series is essentially my companion to Sega Mega Drive Classics. Giving those games context helps me enjoy them exponentially more. I recommend other NES kids turned SEGA adults do this.
Story-line if that's your thing...
YES Slopes.....some of us LOOOOVE GREAT STORIES!! lol. Keep up the good work.
Forgem Nos for space herrier tho?

Excellent! Been waiting for you to do a Space Harrier history!👍
Best version outside of arcade can be played in yakuza 0. u get two games for the price of one
Also available on SEGA Saturn, Shenmue, the SEGA 3D Classics series, and the SEGA AGES series for the Switch.

agreed. The speed for the CPC464 was great.
Just got Genesis Classics for my Xbox and one of my favorite games on the collection is Space Harrier 2 because of how good! Also very good video!
25:04 Same here. Come on Sega, return us to the Fantasy Zone!
Another great edition of The Complete History!

XD you rock man I love this channel , the best game documentary channel on UA-cam ,cheers man!

Space Harrier 3-D on the Master System was my introduction to the series, and yeah, it was quite good. Still love the music to this day!
Videos like this never make it to my watch later list. Because I drop everything and watch it right now.
Huh. Wasn't expecting this one, but I'm very interested. This game first blew me away on the Master System, always loved it. It was a simpler time😂
Don'y forget the arcade perfect playable version in Yakuza 6.
Planet Harriers is a game I've always regretted not playing at the boardwalk, and I haven't seen another since 2000.
This was a great episode. Thanks for creating it. Although Space Harrier II was ported to the MSX, the very first game never was, although Heart Soft created Vaxol, a game very much inspired by Space Harrier.

You missed out Typing Space Harrier for PC! A bit of an oddity that one ;)
I can play Space Harrier like a Jedi.
Top Hat Gaming Man you re cool 🕹️🕹️🕹️🦊🦊🦊🎮🎮✝️✝️😻😘😘😙😙🐺🐺🐱🎉🎊🎊🐩☯️
... like somebody who has never played Space Harrier and is foreign to Earth concept of video games?

Why Sega didn't have M2 work on this game is strange.
BainesMkII theyre bad collections, really the only good thing about them is the gameroom menu
Fantastic video, mate...remember playing it when it launched, if you knew a good arcade in Skegness! Played so many different console/computer versions over the years, even had a T-shirt bought by my sister back when Elite had the home version rights.
Great video as always. Thanks Daniel. I have the Saturn version on order and can't wait to play it!
Been waiting for this one. And you delivered sir!!!
Space Harrier is the first game (aside from the pack - in Hang On/ Astro Warrior) that I played on my Sega Master System. I loved it. I still do.

Excellent, just excellent thank you. I remember seeing this in the arcades with the music booming out.
Played as a child. Amazing music, fast. A beautiful game.
More how much this game needs, the home computer port were an admirable efforts
I had the Spectrum port as a kid. I loved it, and bearing in mind the machines limitations it was an amazing port.
You had to be there in the arcades back then to appreciate the wow factor this game had !!! There was nothing like it...

When you are talking about Space Harrier for Amiga and ST the footage is from the conversion of Space Harrier 2 for those systems.
I actually had Space Harrier on ZX Spectrum once, which was surprisingly good, compared to a lot of Spectrum ports. I've played the 32X version which is very good, and I have the PS2 remake which I've enjoyed. That main theme has such a great remix. Great as always. You missed a trick at the beginning though, you should've said "Welcome to the fantasy zone" instead of "Slopes Game Room"!
Panzer Dragoon felt like a spiritual successor series to Space Harrier. Like, what if they took that "Planet Dragon" thing to the next level.
If I had the resources, I’d make a VR sequel with a rocket cannon the player holds onto in a room with air jets blowing on you from different directions to simulate the flying feeling.
I was always kinda interested by this series
Had a lot of fun as a kid playing it’s NES rip-off 3D Worldrunner...pretty damn good for what it was and the music was damn catchy
Wow Our Price, I'm just old enough to remember that place
The Space Harrier homage in Bayonetta was pretty awesome too.
6:53 " The original Plan was supposed to be to be the military plane harrier" Daniel's keyboard stuttered
I use to work for Sterling Coin in Orlando back in the days of Arcades. I was lucky to play the first one in central Florida. Loved it but it was sold rather quickly
You're running around with a stick if you do crazy stuff and it comes right back to you all that game is so good
Ah that main theme. I should look at expanding my vinyl collection.
Like Fantasy Zone, I have Yakuza 0 to thank for getting me into this game. Really good stuff.
I can't hear the Game Over screen now without hearing "I hope that whoever you are, wherever you may be have a good one and take care, bye".
Excellent video as always Dan. Sadly (or happily, depending on how you look at it) I first experienced Space Harrier in the full hydrolic arcade machine, so I always found home ports somewhat of a less exciting experience, and they felt very watered down. Oh, and yeah the music is friggin awesome, as was true on all the super scaler games.
3:25 was worth the 33 years of waiting
Sin & Punishment and it's Wii sequel (especially it's sequel) are kinda/sorta spiritual successors to Space Harrier, especially because both were made by Treasure.
Have you tried the Atari 8-bit port? It’s very impressive.
I played this game with ZX Spectrum 48K.
I remmeber I played 3D World Runner for NES first and then when I saw this it blew my mind!
Would be interesting to see a port/remaster of planet harriers some day
The Wii virtual console version is fun imo, the controls feel good and offer a fresh new experience.
Your clips of the ST and Amiga are incorrect- they show Space Harrier II. But nice wee vid, good to see more Harrier loves.
Great video, would love to see a complete history of Paperboy!
