note on research programs: when i say easiest i don't mean that they are easy to get into. i mean easiest like it's the easiest way to find a professor willing to work with you, as once you get in they essentially set you up with your lab. but they are extremely difficult to get into initially.

@@sheylaaviles1909 This video that Eleni made was very helpful and I made sure I wrote down every single detail. I also did my personal research about how to cold email professors. I live in NYC, so I looked up all of the local colleges near me and their labs. I found the emails of their labs and emailed all of them telling them my resume (what classes or ecs I took that relate to the lab), why I choose their lab, how I would be helpful, research from that lab that I enjoyed reading, etc. I think I emailed about 5-10 labs. I'm sorry this is delayed and I'm not sure if this is possible anymore because of what is happening right now, but as long as you don't give up and you continue emailing professors, you will get a spot. Also keep in mind, that there are a lot of research programs for high schoolers, so that you don't have to do this long process. I also ended up studying at Baruch College and did a research project with them for a year (much longer than the one at Columbia) because of a program i joined called STEP. Columbia also has a lot of programs for high schoolers as well (but I find them much harder to get into than cold-emailing them).
@@sheylaaviles1909 the biggest tip is to do your own personal research on cold-emailing as a high schooler. Continue to make different drafts of your email and try to make them personal to that specific lab.

when should I be sending out these emails to the professor? Should I be sending them before summer, or is it possible to do it during the school year?
Hi Eleni, Can you start your research in 9th or 10th grade of high school?
I started in 9th grade and did it for 4 years and that really set me apart because I could show colleges my progress and commitment to the lab
Niyati Srivastav there is no grade limit for starting research. As long as you’re in highschool.

Hi! This video was really helpful. Quick question though: I'm currently a junior, and I have done some research before at a summer research program (nothing too fancy--mostly collecting data for a meta-analysis). I am interested in doing a project on my own, though. I know that you said that you started emailing professors the summer before junior year, so would it be too late if I started looking up/emailing professors now, at the beginning of junior year (If I want to include this in college apps/enter research competitions)? If anyone has any insight please let me know. Again, this video was super helpful!
Ayush Bajaj start as soon as possible. Usually doing research is easier through a program. I live in NYC and I’m currently doing a research with a doctorate at a college on Saturdays. Look for research programs for high school students at your local colleges. Emailing professors is really hard to do and get through. I did get in once and all I really did was journal research at Columbia uni and discussed them with a post doctorate.

Hey so I was just wondering what college you were referring to when you said it had a good computer science research program.
If I want to do research in say, CS or Graphics - and I'm more of a beginner-intermediate in the field, how can I convince the professor to take me in?
any lack of experience you can make up for with excitement to learn! you can write/explain examples of being self-motivated in school or outside school, even if they're unrelated to the field, to prove to them that you're excited and prepared to learn

What if you send multiple emails to multiple professors and some of them respond with a yes. What do you do then, because now you have to reject some professors (of whom you said you were really interested in working with)?
yeah so i mean this is basically what you have to do with college apps too........like it's not really your fault for covering your bases and applying to more than one school. likewise professors will understand that they can't possibly be the only one you're contacting. definitely let them know that you appreciate their response and their willingness to take you on but unfortunately your summer plans have changed or however else you want to phrase it

i'm currently interning within a summer program at NIST that's like 7 weeks long; do you know if colleges value independent research with a university more or if interning at a federal corporation (like fda, nih, nist etc) over the summer shows just as much dedication and interest?
also since my internship was only 7 weeks long, there was no way i could get involved in writing a paper (i did create a poster and present it at the poster colloquium or whatever). do you know if it still counts as "research" if i didnt participate in writing a paper? and if my internship is still valued as much as like writing a paper lol
i think working at a federal corporation is just as valuable! it definitely still counts as research. and it's absolutely not a requirement to write a paper, unless you're submitting to siemens/regeneron

for me, besides transportation, i didn't have to pay any money to conduct research. some programs will actually give stipends too!

Damn I was gonna do research at my local university but it got cancelled and I'm going into my junior year, so now I only have one summer to do research going into senior. Is it about what you do or how long you do it?
yeah it's definitely more about what you do than how long! and everyone's summers have been impacted this year, so i don't think it puts you at a disadvantage by any means

freshman year might be a little too early to reach out to professors, so for now i'd recommend just exploring and learning about the field you're interested in as much as you can, so you can build a solid background in it, even if your classes in school don't cover it
are research programs during the5 days of the week or on weekends? im afraid I wont be able to make a commitment because of my fall sport and thats why i am reluctant to send emails
yeah so if you're applying to an official program they're usually weekdays over the summer. but if you're just sending out emails, it's completely up to you and your professor to decide when you'll be at the lab. for me personally, during the school year i was only at the lab on monday evenings and sundays
What did you do your research on?
hi! I'm a junior in highschool and am interested in doing research. When I went to the website of the college near me, it only said the research was for undergrad students, but it gave the emails of the professors. Should I still email them? Or am I probably looking at the wrong section of the website. (University of Houston is what I'm looking at)
it's pretty rare for high school students to do research so i don't think there'd be a page specifically dedicated for high school. you can just reach out to the emails under the undergrad page
