    Wow this is interesting. The things Americans have to do in high school to get into post secondary is crazy to me. In Canada universities just look at our grades. You dont need to do extra curriculars or anything to get into university. The most you have to do is 40 hrs of community service to graduate high school. Extra curriculars and activities would be used for getting scholarships. Can I just mention, post secondary in America is unbelievably expensive, but great video I enjoyed watching it.

    • @sparkleiris7829
      @sparkleiris7829 5 років тому +19

      @@rainkim9176 I'm talking about generally and specifically about Ontario. Generally in Ontario grades are all that matters for the most part. Yes extra curriculars are neccessary if you want an extra boost for your application but it is not required to write anything for a school in Ontario when applying, except for specific programs. Extra curriculars can be used for scholarships and maybe an advantage when applying to schools, that is if you write some kind of essay for the schools you are applying for. There's a possiblity that things a done differently in Ontario than in British Columbia. I probably shouldn't have said Canada but Ontario.

    • @paigeeve6254
      @paigeeve6254 5 років тому +12

      they don't even look at all your grades either. If you go into an arts degree like humanities or social sciences, a lot of universities only look at the required grade 11 courses and your top 5 grade 12 academic courses (including your grade 12 English). Let's just say I'm super glad that a) they literally only look at grades for admissions and b) my math grade didn't have to be counted toward my admissions average when I applied to uvic. lmao americans've got it rough with all these tests and obligatory extracurricular stuff.

      I had no chance either when I finished at community college with a 3.2 GPA. But Stanford isn't a university for typical college students and that's ok. Anyone can still go to an elite school. Just go to community college your first 2 years, earn at least a B average and you are going to be able to transfer to some top public universities which are just as great as Stanford.

    To everyone watching this video and feeling bummed out that “they wasted their life” compared to these guys. Don’t be so negative on yourself. OK, you didn’t publish your own book or save 1000 children in Africa in high school. Don’t worry, your high school career has presented each one of you with personal lessons that you will carry with you for your entire life, not just for the next four. Know that just because you don’t get into Stanford or top rated schools doesn’t mean that you won’t be successful. Your personal experiences already make you who you are and Stanford isn’t some big shot that can determine that your experiences are less valuable than others. You are the only one with that power. Take what you have and grow from it and that to me, is better than getting admitted into any university. From one stressed senior to another!

      After you finish your first project at your first job, no one will care where you got a degree. They'll look at your project results and pronounce judgment (speaking as a chemical engineer at a major corporation). White and Asian males get the toughest assignments. Then it's women, Hispanics, and African Americans. People can prove/disprove themselves and get out of their category, but "real engineers" want tougher assignments and the others are content to do the easy stuff.

    Ok, hear me out. I don’t think all of these people are as insanely over the top smart or just strangely inhuman. I can break this down into a few things: Most of these kids likely had a lot of encouragement from their parents/ were made to do these activities by family. I doubt any of them just stood up one day and said, “Yes, I’m going to start a nonprofit organization even though I don’t want to”, they probably actually wanted to do one because it correlated with their interests. I was a little disheartened when I saw all the cool sounding extracurriculars they do, but then I realized, “Hey, I don’t enjoy doing any of those things, but I am currently in all the clubs I enjoy, so I’m not lying to anyone”. Those kids likely aren’t doing clubs they don’t enjoy either, so if you’re in a place you feel comfortable, you’re good. Lesson is: Start thinking of things you WANT to do. Do you love animals? Maybe go volunteer to walk dogs at a shelter, or feed lizards at a reptile store for free. Don’t like talking to people? Don’t do any activities that require talking. Go find an activity you’re already invested in (video games, art, music, writing, coding) and try to think of something you can do that would catch Stanford’s attention AND be fun for you. Literally anyone can get into Stanford, as long as they don’t sit around doing nothing. If you are sitting around doing nothing, are you okay? You may be depressed, if so get that solved STAT, that will likely hinder you from getting into Stanford more than anything.
    This is all my opinion, but I’m pretty confident in what I’ve said here. Good luck everyone! (I’m also trying to get into Stanford, it’s my top choice and I’m super nervous as well, but I’m not going to give up no matter what it looks like for me).

    Its absolutely hilarious/ridiculous how you can tell so many activities are made or participated in for the sake of college resumes. Its just a list of things for them. I'm similar. I participated in 4 clubs all throughout high school (president/vice president for two organizations), did debate (not really a club but I won a lot of competitions, premier distinction by the NSDA), and loads of community service. For my app season, my SAT was a 1290 and I was only accepted to two schools, but didn't start college until 2 years after graduating hs at my local CC. Lots of students hope for a payout towards a good school and its a relief when it works but creates a sense of regret when it doesn't. Later down the line, I think a lot of students will see, both the accepted and unaccepted students, that the hoops we jumped through were completely unnecessary and maybe even harmful to our personal development.
