ooo I did, but I'm not sure how much it helped in admissions. I think you'd need to develop a reaaaly strong relationship (past the initial outreach) with the professor for them to give you a strong word to the admissions office.
Haha this video is super helpful as I’ve just started the process of emailing professors for a research position! I sent about 5 emails on Sunday evening and am still waiting for responses. How long should I wait before I send another email to that professor or try sending emails to more professors?
Nice!! Great start. I think usually 3 weekdays is the golden standard. Follow-up once or twice, and if they keep ignoring you, then stop pursuing that contact. Hey Iris! I'm planning to apply for the Yale Young Global Scholars Program this upcoming year, and I think I remember you mentioned that you attended that. Is this program highly competitive and what are your tips for applying? What are some ways to stand out?
ooo fun! It should be ~30% acceptance rate. My tip is to be as authentic and genuine as possible in your essays. Write about stuff that matters to you and shows how you care about your community. Avoid big words, wordy sentences, etc. Good luck!
Absolutely LOVE YOUR content!! I sent out a few emails a while back, and most professors have stopped their research projects due to COVID! Should I switch to emailing professors from “bigger”? Thanks:))!!

Hey Iris! Your videos are super informative and helpful! I'm a rising junior and am having trouble coming up with a solid "theme" because I just LOVE to learn about everything. How necessary is it for me to have a theme - what do you suggest? I have done biology, astronomy related activities. Interested in becoming a future engineer! I also love stuffed animals and have made stop motions with them. I also like arts and crafts like origami. Engineering (mechanical/aerospace/biomed) seems to tie in the creativity of the arts with the application of science and mathematics. Also, do you know if its too late in the year to try to get research or intern opportunities? Thanks again for all the tips and hope you have a great week!
Hi Adelene! I'm exactly the same way, as are many of my Stanford friends! We all love learning, and Stanford emphasizes exploration of academic majors in your first year. Therefore, I think a theme is more for understanding you than binding you to an "interest". Themes are more literary -- ie helping the community, bringing people together, etc, and they don't have to revolve around academics at all. Check out the spike video I made and the worksheet that goes along. If any more questions arise, just lmk! Good luck :)
I tried cold calling but I haven't gotten any responses back. Should I keep trying? Also, I feel like I'm unqualified for the job since I've never done any research before. Like, I don't want to be burden to the professors and the other researchers on the team. Anyways, thank you so much for making these helpful videos.
yes i think it's all about persistence / quantity > quality. I don't think there's a thing of being "unqualified". It's all about coming off as confident and enthusiastic/passionate. After all, you're providing free work (at least to start)! And there's no way that that would be a bad thing to a company, esp if your work is going to add value (which it almost certainly will bc of your enthusaism and drive). Good luck!!
Hi Iris! Will you still make these videos when you are in college? I hope you will! Also do people put internships on the common app. Would you still put it if it is not related to the theme/spike. Thank you so much Iris!
I hope so!! I'm actually really excited to make move-ins and talk about my classes/college life, etc. People do put internships on their apps (I put mine, which is unrelated to my theme, as the last activity on my application)
Hi Iris, your videos are so practical and helpful, thank you so much! I love the template you gave and plan on following it myself, but I'm wondering if I should attach my resume as well? Or would that just be in my qualifications paragraph? You're the best :)
Oh yes! Attaching your resume would be helpful for more professional outreaches, so it really depends. I think most likely, in your circumstances, attaching a resume would be appropriate
Hey! Do you think I should still give this a shot even if things are all online right now especially in California? Have you heard of online remote internships available from cold call/ emailing? Thanks for the help!!
Hey Iris, your UA-cam videos are so helpful and I’m definitely gonna use them for reference in High School (I’m an incoming freshman)! Speaking of high school, will my chances of getting into colleges such as the University of Florida be harmed if I don’t take an AP foreign language class? How many years of a foreign language should I take? I have taken Spanish 1 in middle school but most of my classmates have already taken Spanish 1 & 2. If I continue taking Spanish till the end, I would have taken Spanish 1-5 (three of which are honors) whereas many of my peers will have taken Spanish 1-5 (three of which are honors) and AP Spanish in the sixth year.
ahh good luck in hs! It will NOT be harmed. Some schools have a foreign language requirement/rec, so I'd take at least 2-3 years or equivalent so that you can confidently apply to schools like the UCs. I don't think taking AP spanish would be a make or break factor to your app. hope this helped but lmk if u have follow up questions!
Hey Iris! I was just wondering - what if I don't have much experience/qualification, but am still interested in what the person is doing? Is experience and some considerable achievement in the area necessary? Loved the video btw!!
very helpful, thank u so much Iris! i have a question, what do u put on the email subject? is it fine if i write like "summer internship" "interested in marketing internship"?
Hey Iris! Thank you for this video, it's really useful! Can you please say whether you have some experience with research? Because I am currently interested in it,so I just wanted to know whether you managed to contact a professor and work with him/her?
super useful, thanks!! Should I follow the same method to get proofreaders for the book I am publishing? I will finish writing it this week and I want to send it to people very soon, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. Also, do you know happen to know anyone in finance you could connect me to? (since my book is on personal finance)
Yes! I don’t really know anyone in finance :/ but I think even a trusted adult could do personal finance, since they have been managing their own money for a while
I’m not really sure what to put for my qualifications so that mean you need to gain experience or gather some skills in a specific field before you send the email?
Iris, do u think landing 2 research positions is good??? I landed one but don't know if it's better to invest in one research or land multiple positions with various professors???
Hey, so I'm back under this video and I have another question😅So you said that you made your book available to educators and 1000 people read it that way. I was wondering if you had any ideas on how I could do something with my book on personal finance/which area I should aim to distribute and market it in to get the most reads after I publish it. There is not really an existing space for that area among youth and I want my book to create that, but how would you suggest I could make that possible? Sorry for asking so many questions I really want this to work out😹
I think distributing it among school counselors or any teacher, really, could be a good move! Personal finance is so ubiquitous and def needed in the school system! Oh, and also talk to ur librarian!
@@irisfu6929 great idea! I think talking with my librarian would also be great! Now that you say that, maybe I could reach out to different schools in my area and do the same thing!
Hey Iris! I used the steps you listed and called the CEO of a women owned small business in my area yesterday. The only problem is, I called her after hours and during her dinner time! It was my mistake and I felt so bad about it after but she told me to send her an email to follow up and discuss any opportunities they might have for me. I emailed her this morning but I’m worried she might not respond because I called her at such a bad time. Do you think I should give up with this company and continue cold emailing/calling other contacts? (I’m 4 pm EST btw)
Hey Anya! You grow and you learn! Great that you followed up via email, but yes, I’d recommend reaching out to multiple other companies as well with that lesson in mind. There’re so many companies out there! Having a minor mishap with one is not a big deal-keep going!! 🎉🎉
I'm a HS senior who is looking for part-time (about 5 hours weekly) internships available to high school students (interests: social media, social work, psychology, research, museums, creative writing, history). I've been looking up museums in my state that might have remote internship opportunities because I know that covid19 has hit museums very hard economically. Some of these museums usually have teen programs and those are cancelled for the year. Some of them even say that no internships are available right now. Would it be bad to cold call or contact them and ask if there are ways I could help as an unpaid intern?
One more question Iris, Is it normal that a professor accepts your request for research assistanship then don't email you for 3 day Idk what to expect honestly. Has he decided to ghost me or what? His response email was very positive, he asked for the number of hours I'm eager to spend, I replied but he never sent back anything for 3 days now???? I'd love to hear your advice Iris... I'm so anxious! Should I give up and look for another professor?
I’d say don’t freak out! He might’ve had a busy couple of days. If there’s nothing by the weekend’s end, then I’d email him a short, gentle reminder. If you’d like, you can start looking for other professors, but based off what you said, it still seems like this professor would want you to work with him. Hang in there and keep me posted!
Hi .it was amazing .thanks for your help I wanna ask you i am not from USA and i am thinking if i contact with Stanford's professor (since it's the coronavirus so i think the researchers will be online ) so what do you think ?
@@irisfu6929 Thank You, I also have question regarding, your videos. Have you ever made video on how to take notes / how to study. If so, plzz share with me.
How to get a Research Position if you are an international email as I will require a Visa to study? Who will sponsor the visa in order for me to working with them?
Hey, Iris, I have recently cold emailed a company for an internship opportunity, And I also got a reply within 15-20 mins saying That "Sure I will let you know", It's a week now and I did not get any new message from them, Now I am thinking of calling them should I do that.
A cold call for an interview is like asking a random woman/man for a date. She/He may agree if she/he is attracted to you or she may refuse. And you know what...attraction has no logic. It is very random. Its like betting. So yea make your bet but don't judge much about it as it is just a damn bet after all!
Hey iris, I landed research position. The professor accepted my offer, what should I tell him now??? I mean I don't know how to respond to his email saying I'm welcome to remote and stuff.....
If i wnat to study premed(probably as a major biology or psychology or the mix) what extracurriculars would help me or make me look good to the admissions workers
I’d say never ever do an activity for the sake of admissions bc it will come off as fake and you probably won’t even enjoy it. Really reflect on what you WANT to do. I think if I give u ideas, those will not be authentic to you. With that said, here’re some popular ideas (don’t do them if u don’t feel strongly about them): a blog or book on biology/psychology, conducting research in that area, etc
Hi Iris! I'm a subscriber. OK but please....can you tell me how to begin with a passion project? I'd want to get students from all around the world and create one. But the thing is...where do I begin? Like I'd want to major in literature and an extra different major on neuroscience (looking forward to this in the passion project, well...more than the other). Or can I just email you? PLS PLS PLS Thank you :D
Hey! I think the biggest thing is to pick a problem you want to address. What's a community or global issue you care about? Then, use your interests (literature and neuroscience) to come up with a solution. For literature, I can see you writing a blog or fiction book, and neuroscience, maybe science research or other forms of research. Basically utilize words and/or research to address a problem you care about! Good luck xx
@@irisfu6929 How can I gather the people? Like how do you open the community so that people from all over the world can talk to each other regarding the topic of the community? Thanks

Iris Fu Thank youuuu - I’ve been worrying about this for such a long time! Good luck to you too at Stanford! 😄
You are amazing
Iam a sophomore rn, am I too late to start preparing for college? Also how do I find the right person to ask an internship for?
When do you think I should start applying for internships? I'm just a sophomore now
Anytime! I did mine summer after sophomore year but I know others who do it after junior or after freshman - anytime is great
Yes! I don’t really know anyone in finance :/ but I think even a trusted adult could do personal finance, since they have been managing their own money for a while
@@irisfu6929 that's true! I'm also going to ask some adults to read it...thanks for the idea!
I’m not really sure what to put for my qualifications so that mean you need to gain experience or gather some skills in a specific field before you send the email?
Iris, do u think landing 2 research positions is good??? I landed one but don't know if it's better to invest in one research or land multiple positions with various professors???
Even landing 0 is fine! You don’t NEED an internship or a research position and quality > quantity
@@irisfu6929 Iris: definitely best UA-camr ever, I really appreciate ur help and support. you're such an amazing person❤️
I’m doing research at home with a professor as a mentor we will be meeting through zoom is this as good as going to a lab or no
Hey, so I'm back under this video and I have another question😅So you said that you made your book available to educators and 1000 people read it that way.
Yes definitely! No harm in doing so and free work is a big attraction!!!
@@irisfu6929 Thank u so very much you're sooo helpful ❤️
Can we cold call professors for research opportunities too?
I am a high school student and I wanted to get a research opportunity in literature, so how do I find the professor who I'm gonna intern under?
Hi .it was amazing .thanks for your help
I wanna ask you i am not from USA and i am thinking if i contact with Stanford's professor (since it's the coronavirus so i think the researchers will be online ) so what do you think ?
Yes you can! Go for it
@@irisfu6929 okay thanks ;)
Is it possible to share what application did you use for editing videos?
I use FCPX! (currently on a 3 month trial but will likely purchase after it ends)
Does this work for high school students as well?
Yes it's what I did in high school!
Hey iris, I landed research position. The professor accepted my offer, what should I tell him now??? I mean I don't know how to respond to his email saying I'm welcome to remote and stuff.....
Just be genuine! Be like thank you and when should we get started? What will logistics look like? Etc...
Hi! Sorry if im annoying but what kind of extracurriculars can a junior do (im international i didnt know they were so important) pleasee🥺❤️
Have you checked out the top 5 at-home EC video? I’d highly recommend and feel free to lmk if u have more questions after that!
PLS PLS PLS
Thank you :D
Iris Fu ok! Thank you!
@@irisfu6929 How can I gather the people? Like how do you open the community so that people from all over the world can talk to each other regarding the topic of the community? Thanks
Should I cold call / email only one professor from the certain department of a university, or should I email a few professors from the same department of a university?
Either is fine. Really depends on whether or not you’re interested in several depts or just one
@@irisfu6929 Thanks. A professor accepted my offer yesterday. Do you think it's fine to ask if it is paid or unpaid?
Hey there gg, could you help me?
what if they cold emailed you 😳😳😳
Wow 😫👀 then u must be in the big league
So I can’t email the professor by google email because it thinks I am a spam???
How’s this?

iris learns economics, but iris knows psychology
XD
also, iris, thanks 2u, i landed in an internship in my country... much love
HAHAHA congrats Aditi! Super happy for you
I know Iris is perfect, but I advise not to cold call, unless you ask for something simple, like “Is there a position open (just an example)”. People usually don’t like to be called
You are so cute
