  • I spent two hours casting to this Brown and a Rainbow that was further up the pool. I changed flies about five times. A Royal Wulff did the trick eventually. It has got to be my worst hook set since I started trout fishing three years ago. I had a lot of slack line on the water to get a decent drift, and I was surprised he was still there when I finally tightened the line. 4 ¾ pounds (2.1 kg).
I hooked the Rainbow a few casts later, but that is for another video.

A couple of others, and yourself, have commented on the slow hook set, so I'll leave it alone. All that matters is that you landed it. But great fight and beautiful fish! Thanks for posting!

Very slow hook set with so much slack on the water, but you got him! Do you normally have so much line on the water?

Normally no, but this pool has a difficult current and I was getting a bit lazy with my line management .It worked out OK in the end, but I was lucky he hooked himself 😀.

this video is cool because I can hear your heartbeat. Love it.
your hookset was so slow that it looked intentional.. you didn't see the rise? like thought he went for a different bug?

I was casting to him and a Rainbow a bit further upstream alternately and changing flies for about two hours before he took that fly. I had definitely taken my "eye off the ball". I did see the take but had a heap of slack line to haul in before I could load the rod. Also, I wasn't 100% sure which white blob was actually the fly until he ate it. It's better to be lucky than smart 😁.
