Kendall, I suggest you transplant some pond plants into your ponds for both the fish, they even eat some pond plants & to clean the water. You could even transplant some catails to clean the water, lilly pads would look nice & give the fish shade & a place for cover, Japanese Water Iris would be beautiful in bloom too! Here's to hoping the fish continue to grow & spawn! I agree, they do need a feeder for food to grow especially if you'll be fishing from your ponds. Thanks for sharing! 😊
That’s a bad idea to put lilys in. It’s to small and they would take over the pond plus roots can puncher the bottom of the pond and cause a leak. While beautiful the best plant to use would be a floating play that would die off in the winter.
Howdy! I know this is an "old" video but this is exactly the sorta stuff I'm nerdy about. Plant some bulrushes, willows, water oaks, sedges, and cattails around the edge of the lake, throw some duckweed in there, and also some lily pads. They will provide shade, cover, leaves will provide nutrients, and fallen limbs will supply coves as well. The sedges and bulrushes will allow for more water to permeate and increase water volume. Alongside the edge of the embankment you should also plant some deep rooted plants. I do not know what range plants are native to Kentucky, so go to your extension agent and see what y'all can choose from.
You need some sort of aeration if there is a plankton bloom and a thunderstorm rolls in it will kill the plankton which will wipe out every single one of your fish a volcano pump is a great choice and it will provide lots of aeration for your pond
You should poke tiny holes in the bags when you set the bags in the water. That lets the water types slowly mix to acclimate them into a new environment.
You should add a grate in the front of the pipe so no fish can go down the little stream and you don’t lose fish. Love the pond keep up the great work!
After they acclimate in the bag sitting in the water, it would be a good idea to put some pond water in the bag a time or two before releasing the fish into the pond. It all helps with the acclimation process. Good luck.
Might want to add some chicken wire over the outlet pipe, at least until the fish are big enough to resist the current. That, and/or plant some water plants above the outlet, to slow the current, and give them a barrier. A small collection pond at the outlet could be good, too, especially if you line the outlet channel with rocks as another barrier. Something deep enough to break up the outflow current, with rocks for shelter. Could give you at least the possibility of a second chance to recover the fish.
You definitely need to think about something to put oxygen in the pond water. Either a fountain, sprinkler system, or waterfall. I would also have the water tested for algae and ph levels. As well some other type of fish that will clean up the algae. Wouldn't hurt to mesh over the drain pipe to keep from losing fish. And last, I would get an underwater lighting and automatic feeder. You'll thank me later.
Stocked my pond with fish from down the road. Just bass, gills, green sunfish, perch, and a few crappie. And I feed them catfish pellets and fatheads. The fatheads will rapidly reproduce into more food.
Greenies repopulate like crazy and when there is a bunch of small fish there isn’t much oxygen and they take up a lot of space and don’t get super big they also eat basses food since there mouths are so big
@@zarkodedajic4665 Exactly, Ive been raising arctic graylings on a professional level. In the ponds where we had them we always netted the outflow. With a 180° net like an arms length in front of it. Only trouble was when beavers got in the ponds, and our ponds was much larger!
Idk if you've ever tried cleaning one of those pipes before, and I'm not assume that you haven't, but if you have you'd know it isn't as easy as it may seem. I used to work for my local gov. and we used to take care of the drainage systems, like ditches, drains on the road, colverts, etc. and cleaning those pipes when they are clogged is hard enough with a 6 man crew without a net, and we'd still need a special truck, to run a hose with a special nozzle, to blast water into the pipe to blast thro any mud, dirt or debris that's caught inside. Now this would happen maybe 1 time a year, and wasnt that big of a job for one or 2 of those pipes in a ditch, but I can't imagine if that pipe for the pond gets clogged, cause like Kendall said, it'll flood everything, including some peoples houses. A net would speed up that process significantly.
Hey great video! I've always wanted my own pond and love that you have made one yourself. A few things for the pond I would suggest is some kind of grate to put on the outflow pipe so your fish don't flow out. You could also get some plants and a fountain in the middle would be a good addition too for aerating the water and supporting plant life.
Yes feed them. The fish will grow faster and you will love feeding in the evening. I always enjoy sitting and watching the catfish coming up to feed. They will start to show up the same time every evening for feeding time and then fishing is great. I have also rowed out to the middle and sunk a big bag of dog food to feed them too.
Hi there, a top tip to add some strength to your banks is to, plant some yellow flag Iris ( Iris Pseudacorus ) and the more common one. The water Iris ( Iris laevigata ). These are a great addition to any pond. Just plant them around the edge of the pond. Put rhe plants one foot apart and six to eight inches deep into the water. The difference in your pond in six months will be amazing.
I kept several aquariums many years ago, and I learned a LOT about the ecosystem needed to keep aquatic animals. This story here worries me as the bacterial system needed to clean up the water (nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, etc.) takes time to grow. Of course you can add these bacteria and they sell this bacteria (more than one type) to help grow the system. It’s always best to start with a small number of fish and animals and let the bacteria grow naturally. Good luck.
Maybe you already know this…..don’t let ANYTHING but grass grow on your dam. Keep it mowed. If you neglect the dam and allow trees/saplings grow, the roots will grow into the dam and if/when the tree dies, the roots will rot and leave holes in your dam where the roots were. You can imagine what may happen later.
If you watch Bama Bass UA-cam channel, you’ll learn a lot about pond, maintenance and ecology and what you need to stock in your pond to keep your fish fed
Use some mesh over the outflow pipe brother, then every now and then rub it down with a hard brush to clear any leads/twigs that get caught in it to slop it getting blocked, I’d personally also add some under water lights around the future dock to help spot the fish on a night time. Great videos keep them up, brother !
hey kendall just want to give you a tip my dad is a wild life biologist and has been stocking ponds for years and for your pond you have a low number of blue fill with a high number of bass ordering 700 more blue fill would beneficial for your pond if not you will have very very few bluegill in a year
By selecting plants such as Pickerelweed, Willow Moss, Hornwort, and water lilies, you can harness nature's filtration system to combat algae and create a visually stunning and healthy pond. Remember, maintaining a balanced pond ecosystem goes beyond just algae control.
I know you've probably already saw a message similar to this one but you should really cover that overflow pipe with a mesh or something so you dont lose any fish Fish like to follow current and they'll swim right outa that pipe just need like a rake or something and scrape over the netting every now n then to make sure it doesnt get blocked also helps keeping those logs outa there too
Those small minnows might be baby chubs. Especially since the chubs you left in there were decent sized. It’s been a year so that’s plenty of time for fish that size to spawn and baby’s start to swim around.
If you want the dam to last, put some sheep on top. They are living lawnmowers and with their tiny hoofs they compress the earth. Old method used for dikes in holland and along the north sea. Edit: some fish eggs are brought in the feathers of ducks. So you can expect more species, than you put in.
You should make a floating pond straight through the middle from bank to opposite sides bank so you can cast and travel side to side quickly and safely it’d also be super dope
