  • This short film about ADHD tells the story of experiences I myself and people around me have made, who suffer from ADHD. This was my high school graduation project and it received not only top marks but also awarded one of the best projects of the year.
I wanted to address people who knew very little about ADHD, affected or not, and show how appallingly society and the school system deal with the topic (of course with exceptions). What I portrayed in this film is merely what I have experienced myself. I have since heard stories a lot more horrible. It is impossible to pack all I wanted to say about ADHD into 35min but this is my first attempt. If you suffer from ADHD and/or want to know more, please contact me and I would love to talk about it. I do ask you NOT to contact me with messages like "Drugs are bad, you should except who you are." or "ADHD doesn't exist, it's a label invented by the drug industry" especially if you don't have the syndrome yourself.
In the film, Alex, the protagonist in this story, takes Ritalin whereas her friend Ruby doesn't. I am aware that Ritalin has very different effects on different people. In this short film I am most definitely NOT praising Ritalin or any kind of drug designed to help with the syndrome (such as Adderall or Concerta), I am merely defending its general use and saying it can in some cases help you a lot (which it did in my personal case). Hence the two characters: for some it works, for some it doesn't.
I hope you forgive my amateur level of technical abilities, as this is the very first film I've made at the age of 17, with no filmmaking training at this point. I would love to hear your feedback and yes opinions about the topic as long as it is not offensive. I also wrote a paper in which I show how I chose to portray certain symptoms in my film. I also talk about other aspects such as ADHD in literature and pop culture or my thought behind creating the characters and scenes. If you would like to read this, I’d be very happy to send it to you.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH OMG😭 I just recently been diagnosed with adhd (about 2 months ago) and im 18 almost 19. Everyone kept telling me that I was just lazy and didn’t do enough, that I had so much potential but just wasn’t trying enough. That I was stupid and wouldn’t do much in my life if I continued down this path. I kept procrastinating even though people would tell me all of this, and I kept beating myself up to it because I knew that I was ruining my life by doing it, but I just couldn’t stop. I thought I was stupid and that life was like this for everyone else, except others had a good discipline and not me. I thought I was the problem, and that led me to so much social and generalized anxiety, and even depression. Now that I’ve been diagnosed and have learned a lot about it, im finally starting to be a bit nicer to myself, understanding that it isn’t my fault, that I cannot change who I am. Adhd is an identity to me. It is part of who I am and without it, I would not be me. This movie just represented me and im so glad im finding people to relate to and that it’s getting the recognition it deserves♥️♥️♥️

I used to get so agitated in school cause people would goof off and make so much noise and I couldn't focus at all. They called me weird, a hardass, intimidating, invisible but I couldn't help it. No matter how hard I tried

Cried watching this, amazing film. Like watching my life growing up, 39 and only just getting a diagnosis. I tbought life was meant to be this tough, all the same comments from others, all the frustration, self hate and low self worth, forgetting gym kit, wandering around school trying find the correct class 30 mins late, Even today had to be threatened by my boss just to complete a menial task that took 20 anxious minuets to complete.
Thank you, watching this has helped me feel less alone.

I’m so glad you were able to take so much away from this film, that makes me really happy. Thank you so much for this wonderful comment. That’s exactly what I wanted to achieve with this film. Also very glad that you’re able to get a diagnosis. It can be so freeing. This will hopefully be the start of a wonderful and empowering even if tough journey for you.
