The show is half baked. It's designed for only one season and the writing is sloppy at giving proper answers to actual plot holes, and as such creates an overall incomplete story trying to pose as complete. If you're going to supposedly conceive an ending that wraps up everything in a nice bow, explain all the other components and how the entire system runs. It's ridiculous how writers seem to address this mistake as mystery and intrigue but its lazy writing.

Gi-hun and Deok-su joining the games makes sense as their alternative is to be killed and had their organs harvested. Sangwoo however both votes to stay in the game, and returns, even though his life isn't in danger (he may be jailed, but he won't be killed). Sangwoo can't handle the shame of declaring bankruptcy and his family/community knowing his failures

And for fairness, I like the idea the actual "fairness" is for the betting VIPs. None of them knew the guy in stepping stones was a glass manufacturer, thus they didn't have the knowledge to place their bet (even though, they should have read the files). So frontman takes that advantage away when it's unfair considering players got to use their talents to aid in other games

Great, in-depth analysis. Some really deep and profound points.
But I disagree that the longing for childhood can be separated from a critique of capitalism. When Sang-oo is lying on the floor dying and he recalls to Gihun how their mothers used to call them for dinner, I get the sense that he's saying nobody can help them now. His mum can't help him out of his debt. Gihun's mum can't help him out of Gihun's debt. They have to fend for themselves. They long to return to the simpler, carefree time of childhood (as you said) but the only reason they're lives are so much worse and harsher than their childhood is because they need to function in a ruthlessly competitive, often predatory capitalist society.
Il-Nam by contrast might long to relive the fun of his childhood, but unlike the debt-ridden Gihun and Sang-oo, his immense money allows him to do that. He dies having relived the fun of his childhood because his money allowed him to set up this sick, twisted game.
His money also buys him the security from harm and consequences that children have. By rights, he should've died in the marbles game. He didn't because the people executing the contestants are his employees.
The longing for childhood might be universal. But through a capitalist critique we see how different the ability to relive childhood and the reasons for wanting to relive childhood is. These differences are determined directly by wealth in Squid Game.
Il-Nam- boredom, able to relive childhood, free from consequences
Sang-oo/ Gihun- desire to escape harsh reality, unable to return to childhood, suffer consequences for failure.

Even at the end when Gi-hun was betting with Il-Nam on whether the homeless man outside in the snow would be helped by someone he just stood there very passive convinced that someone would help the man. This could be seen as “hope in humanity” however, he could’ve just helped the man himself, proving Il-Nam’s point! Gi-Hun passively became like the VIPs who have billions of money and bet on people’s lives. He too now has billions and is there betting on a life just like the VIPS! This show is so deep!

What a wonderful and thorough analysis of the overall theme of Squid Game! My favorite message in the story that you touched upon is the fact that humans are not good at making indirect investments and decisions with an unforeseeable circumstance. I LOVED how that you mentioned that what killed SangWoo at the end was that he was so lost and carried away by his sins.
Although this show is about the merciless and unfair system of society, I loved that the writer recognized the importance of maintaining integrity and being true to one's values and morals as another (but indirect) aspect of survival. The way I see it is that Gi Hun and Sang Woo both acted selfishly (Sang Woo much more than Gi Hun), but Gi Hun won because he has never lost himself or his moral code and dignity.
And I also chuckled when you said "... he tricks Ali during the marble game and killed Sae Byeok with his own hands - other than that though, great guy!"

Ali was taken advantage of because in a way he didn't truly understand the games as much as the overly educated Sang Woo.
Everybody was playing with different things about them that would make or break them in the game and the games themselves couldn't be made equal either. Tug of War was a great example because you had to find people who you thought were strongest which neglects those who appear weaker (women, elderly, smaller men).

Despite how annoyed I got when you denied it was about capitalism, this is otherwise the best analysis I've seen so far
A communist death games would require at least pretending to encourage players to work together. The hyper-competitiveness that the games encourage in the later rounds makes it clear it's a capitalist critique. And sure it's been done to death, but I'd argue that standing out in such a saturated market just shows it's got something special.

This is definitely about Capitalism, and the creator has made that clear, anyone saying differently is misinterpreting the story (to a certain degree, particularly the main analogy of the series) and is letting their politics get in the way of seeing the over arching allegory of the show.

@@nikoincroatia Capitalism does not claim equal opportunity. You must be confused with *equal rights* prevalent in a democratic society. Capitalism simply meant free-market. You can make money however you like without any interference from the government, and you keep whatever you earn. Capitalism says even if you don't have equal opportunity, you can suceed. A homeless person can sell hotdogs on the side of the street can become rich if he works hard and uses enginuity.
Since you didn't see any aspect of communism in the game, here are some clues for you:
*1) You have no individuality* -- everyone is wearing the same clothes, same shoes -- just like North Korea
*2) No freedom* -- you can't leave the premise, you eat what's given (ration) -- just like North Korea
*3) Always watched* -- you're chipped, every action is monitored, even in bathrooms, even when you get out of the island
*4) Equality* -- same clothes, same bed, same meal for everyone, you're promised equality, fair rules -- Just like North Korea
*5) Punishment* -- you're killed for breaking the rule or failure/mistake (public execution) -- Just like North Korea
*6) Forced Work* -- players are forced to play the same game at gunpoint
*7) The Prize* -- communism promise utopia that isn't achievable -- even when Gi-hun won, he didn't spend a penny
*8) Host and VIPs* -- dear leader fat dictator and his minions eat, drink, entertain like kings
*9) No escape* -- if you try to escape, even your brother will kill you -- Just like North Korea

      1) Same clothing -- Are you trying to claim North Koreans all wear the same thing, or am I misunderstanding? Because that would be ridiculous.
The same outfits are probably because the entire setup is build as a kindergarden or school, and uniforms are the norm for South Korean schools.
      2) No freedom to leave, rations -- Except you can leave if more than half the people vote to leave. That's not an option in NK.
The players comment on how the prepared meals are like the meals they used to get to take to school. We also see lack of food or poor quality food being part of Gi-Hun's struggle in the outside world, eating dry ramen or not being able to afford a good meal for his daughter. When a parallel is shown on screen, then it is assumed that that is the parallel that is intended, not some hypothetical parallel that's never shown.
      3) Always watched -- you're chipped, every action is monitored, even in bathrooms, even when you get out of the island
The SK government has 1.34 million CCTV cameras in operation and particularly lax privacy of personal information laws. That's part of why it's so easy to watch them outside the island.
      4) Equality -- same clothes, same bed, same meal for everyone, you're promised equality, fair rules -- Just like North Korea
You're promised the same starting conditions, not that everyone can win together. Every system claims to be fair, to reward good traits.
      5) Punishment -- you're killed for breaking the rule or failure/mistake (public execution) -- Just like North Korea
We see Gi-Hun being threatened with death and organ harvesting by loan sharks. Sang-Woo tries to kill himself. Punishment of death is not limited to NK.
      6) Forced Work --
Again, they can vote to leave. They also signed up for the game.
      7) The Prize -- communism promise utopia that isn't achievable -- even when Gi-hun won, he didn't spend a penny
Communism's promised utopia isn't that one or a small number of people will be insanely rich. And Gi-Hun does achieve that utopia, he can spend the money if he wants to and he eventually does.
      8) Host and VIPs -- dear leader fat dictator and his minions eat, drink, entertain like kings
That happens in both communism and capitalism. The VIPs and Host are able to create the games and enjoy luxury because of their success in the capitalist system. The Host especially was a money-lender and all the players are in debt, his success is directly tied to their failure, in capitalism.
      9) No escape -- Again, you can leave by vote.
But even if hypothetically it was a parallel to NK... what would that say about SK that these people are so desperate that they'd rather take their chances in the game than go on living in SK?

i think one of the weirdest psychology things with squid games is that they used red light green light as a first game, its a game that doesnt have to get rid of half the contestants and even in the honey comb game its still up to your own performance. but when they get to the third game they are forced to choose and make teams and go up against each other and thats when they learn that it may come to the outcome of only one winner. but by that time they've already gone through 3 games and so many people have died
they totally could have stopped the games again if they wanted to as well

That was Sang woos argument to the man who killed his wife in the marbles game, that if they gave up then all the deaths would be on their hands and would be for nothing, essentially. Nobody would leave with anything.
However Sang Woos motivation for saying this was proven to be a selfish move as he doesn't want the games to end and kills 067 so that her and Gi-Hun can't vote to end it.

I think another manipulation rarely pointed out is that the whole scoreboard with prize money and the distribution make it appear like multiple people can win the prize. When in fact, given the VIP table set up, the model and play area for the bridge, and the list of winners book, it seems like only one person can ever win. Maybe 2. It's good for the game or else everybody would just be a cut throat bastard, but it allows relationships to be built and inevitably destroyed. I don't think making a married person kill their significant other is very fair, maybe at a very technical sense

Insightful discussion, especially your take on the ending. I was also thinking how odd it was that player 456 [Seong Gi-hun] was still so passive during the last bet, not taking any action despite having the ability to help the freezing man outside. Perhaps due to “hope” that you described in your analysis, he finally starts changing (perhaps even “managing”) the game instead of just taking life’s cruel slaps passively.
That topic of the slapped people being invited to play is interesting, too. Those who would walk away from a gamble and who would pay their debts with their physical suffering are the ones who receive an invitation.

23:30 the reason frontman isn't punished for taking off his mask is nobody besides his brother can see who he is. Notice how he wears the mask before turning around to the other soldiers, and when he kills the guy for taking off the mask the reason he cites is nobody should figure out who you are. The frontman isn't disobeying the rules in this sense

    • @user-tu1jb3yl2c

Even if he was breaking the rule fully, it probably wouldn't apply to him anyway. Much like the boss of any company isn't punished for things that he punishes employees for because he himself is the punisher. The rules don't apply to him.
Think about how the doctor and the workers are killed for making the game "unfair" yet when he sees the glassmaker checking the glass which is not against the rules and isn't unfair as it benefits the ones behind him just as much as it benefits him, not hinders them; he turns off the lights so the man can't see. That's not fair.
It's a "rules for thee but not for me" mentality.

    • @user-tu1jb3yl2c

I mean you are right but I see GO's side too. The players returned of their free will BUT they were not given enough information to make an informed decision. Would they have played knowing what games were coming? That they would be able to kill each other outside the games to achieve the same money as a result? That only one could win this time?
I say this time because I think based on the records showing some games having multiple winners, it stands to reason that the games played likely change between iterations and if different games are played, perhaps that allows for multiple winners. Hell, even playing the games in a different order could have resulted in multiple winners. If squid game was played in teams and the games were played in reverse ending with Red light, green light. Many winners could result.
I'm off track but I think that's the point. Yes they chose to come back, they aren't forced but they also don't have the information needed to make the choice.

I think the reason Ilnam contacts Gi-hun is because he honestly couldn't understand why he wouldn't use the money. Underneath, though, he probably suspected that it didn't make Gi-hun happy and that it wasnt even necessary. Probably what Ilnam thought growing up: money will make everyone happy and is an absolute necessity, even over our relationships with people. Therefore, Ilnam wanted to convince Gi-hun to use the money and bet on the homeless man, because it would help Ilnam to not face that: that he lived his life very incorrectly, to his detriment and his family and friends. He wanted to bring Gi-hun down to his level, to feel better about himself, because he became cynical, bored, depressed and possibly had some self-hatred. Therefore, with all this in mind, Ilnam had a warped view and the only way he could think to help people was this deadly game, because it entertained him and his friends. With death looming, though, he thought he needed to punish himself by participating as well, to undo the karma. For this reason, it can make sense that Gi-hun won, (since some people thought Song-woo winning would make more sense) because he learned that money doesn't matter as much as people by playing the game and it can get Ilnam (and people like him) thinking.

You realize that the game makes a better critique of the actual capitalist society they live in rather than the make believe communism you're pretending exist in the show.
Squid game as a whole represents a meritocracy. Which is incompatible with even the basic "From each...to each" central to communism.
Like how America espouses 'freedom and equality' while having the highest incarceration rate of any country ever.
The general idea that in order for you to become rich you have to step on everyone around you.
The fact that democracy is a sham with outcomes decided by the rich.

Ali doesn’t commit a violent act. Wage theft is an extremely serious crime and it’s clear his boss was being criminally negligent. I’m not a lawyer but he seems well within his rights to seize illegally withheld wages. The boss also initiates the violence and is the one who at fault! Note none of his employees care enough about him to stop the machinery despite a clear risk of injury, so he’s clearly not loved or respected. It’s also clear who we are supposed to side with given the symbolism of the boss also losing the same fingers Ali lost. What Ali IS guilty of is simply not being altruistic, his behavior otherwise is completely justifiable (don’t know about Korea, but SIX MONTHS of wage theft is going to incur huge penalties and possibly sentence elevations for repeated violations as that’s more than one pay period. Safe to say at minimum his boss is facing SEVERE civil liability and possibly criminal penalties for negligence)

@@feddytownucetuigamala-lolo6788 well yeah, but that's what they would still tell them. It's not like the guards are being completely honest during the games lol

@@feddytownucetuigamala-lolo6788 in this round. But if you looked at the records the cop found there were years in the past that had multiple winners. I believe the games change each time so there could be different games that allow for more than one winner. This iteration was tailored to Il-nam and the games he wanted to play, it just so happened only one could win this time but thats not true off every squid game round.

    Gi-hun's number is 456 and the prize money is 45 600 000 000. It's a sign Gi-hun was bound to win

Or its just that each players life was valued individually at 100000000 won. I think the point that that was deliberate foreshadowing Gi Huns win is way overstated a not predictive as much as him being the main character of the players who we view the games through and spend the most time with telegraphs his win. Had Sang Woo won and Gi Hun lost and been killed, Sang Woo would have received the same amount despite his number not being 456. I have yet to see an explanation that Gi Huns number is foreshadowing if his win that doesn't involve a huge leap in logic that ignores the point that org is placing a monetary value on individual human life.

Thats why I find it funny when people judge sung woo because it doesn't what he needed to do to win..if was them they would do the same thing

But who said that only one person can win the game? Techniqually multiple people can win the game as the last game "the squid game" is a team game not one on one. Right?
