- Korean media is the gift that just keeps on giving with this battle royale style, gritty satire absolutely dominating on the platform right now, with it being in the top 10 most popular shows on the streaming service in over 22 countries. The series which is a jet black and violent portrayal of humanity is full of twists and turns, brilliant foreboding, easter eggs, hidden details and subtle references that it’s worth giving the show a full rewatch. However, until then we thought it would be best to take a look at the listed items in great detail, putting the show up to the magnifying glass, and finding the secrets hidden in plain sight.
In this video then, we will take a look at 15 things from the show that you may not have noticed on the first time of asking. We will look at all of the foreshadowing in regards to the identity of the game’s true architect (and how the evidence was in front of our eyes the whole time), the subtle imagery that spells out the entire story painted on the wall of the player’s dormitory for all to see, the subtle foreboding of key character’s deaths and how they will die, the visual cues that you may not have initially noticed, the inspiration for both the show and the costume and set design, some familiar faces you may not have noticed and some goofs the show makes just for good measure. Get ready to have your dreams haunted all over again as we reenter “Hell”.

I feel like Ali Abdul was the perfect representation south asians needed. I'm so used to us being portrayed as the comedic relief in tv shows (the desperate one or the nerdy lame one), so this was so refreshing to see a real relatable person that isn’t just an exaggerated stereotype. I'm sure a lot of desi people felt really attached to him too. His kindness, naivety and work ethic reminded me of my dad and I really felt so close to his character. I sobbed for an hour when he died
I very nearly stopped watching at that point. I find it difficult to watch kind and good people suffer especially at the hands of the self-serving
It was really nice as an American, to se other cultures portrayed more wholesomely. We need more characters like Ali!

The biggest foreshadowing is when the detective goes through the paperwork in the office and opens the book of current players it starts a player 2 not player 1 because he wouldn’t need to put his own file on record

100% agree. I thought I'd hate a foreign film. I was encapsulated by this series. It's absolutely a masterpiece and I find myself thinking about it ALL the time and I finished it weeks ago. Absolutely incredible.

There’s several clues throughout the show that hint 001 is 456’s father.
-When 456 refuses to drink regular milk, 001 says his son hated milk too.
-On October 24, 001 says his son’s birthday is coming soon. 456 birthday is Oct 31.
-During the marble game 001 says he lived in a similar neighborhood, 456 says so did he.
-The door of the house where 001 gets “killed” at is the same as 456’s mother’s house.

Something I don’t think everyone knows, is that scene when Sang Woo is in the bathtub, he is trying to commit suicide by burning the charcoal briquette on the stove (a common method of suicide in Korea) leading to carbon monoxide poisoning.
So in terms of foreshadowing, he tried to commit suicide then and died by killing himself during the squid game.

Yes, I remember Kim Jong-hyun of Shinee and comedian Park Ji-sun recently taking their lives through this method.
I thought they would mention that, not the suit. To the other three they related their actions to their deaths, but for Sang Woo they related his clothes xD

I love how they didn’t cut corners by using digital effects. I feel like it truly added to the quality acting! We’ve been so inundated by superhero movies in the west that I almost forgot it existed.
No disrespect to superhero movies because they’re fun & I get the appeal but it’s all we’ve been given for like the last 10 years. I’m kinda over it.

Totally agree. Too much digital imagery really does take away from the realistic feeling.
I agree with you on all but one point. Doing it this way is not "cutting corners". Convincing digital effects are *way* more expensive than the sets they had to build (and extras they had to hire) for this show.
You forgot one of the most clever hints at Oh Il-Nam being the creator. When the police officer is flipping through the most recent list of players in Squid Game (2020), the first page he opens to is Player 2 because there isn’t a file on Player 1/Oh Il-Nam.
Such a clever detail, we missed that one so thanks for pointing it out!

Regardless of how inexplicably obvious it was that the old man knew too much, his lines and acting and overall performance really just made his character seem like a nutty old man. Normally, it would be easier to pick up, but him being so content with his mortality, and the sweet ignorance really made me unsuspecting of him.
Marbles scene really made tear up. It was so heartfelt, the emotion was so driven and you really feel for these characters.

One other Oh Il-Nam hint that i haven't seen mentioned is that he stalls the marble game until he is the last team left. That way he can fake getting killed without anyone seeing.
I imagine he didn't want to fake getting killed at all, bc he didn't join the VIPs later on even though he wasn't in the game anymore, so it wasn't his plan to leave by then...
He did his best to not get picked, actually. Gi-Hun was just that stubborn 😂

I think he must have been lonely if he had so much fun in such a brutal game and even invented it. Means his dearest ones are not close to him anymore if he values life so little

I’ve never seen anyone mention how when the group is asking everyone’s real name, 001 kind of drifts off and fumbles with his words. Playing it off as his brain issues but I think he just really didn’t want to reveal who he really was

Another clue for Il Nam as the mastermind is that when they begin killing each other in bedtime, the guards only begin to flood in when Il Nam screams on top of the beds
It also stopped right when it got to 80, so I took it more as they needed even teams for tug of war
Also, when the cop is looking through the binder with the players in it, the first page is player 2.

In the game of marbles, where everyone had a partner player 001 was sitting quietly in a corner as he knew that the number of players are odd and the last one remaining would be set free ( while others thought the last one remaining would be eliminated) but it did not turn into his favor as player 456 chose him. This was the only reason that women who cursed a lot survived.
Fun fact: Brazil is the only country in the world where the show is actually called Round 6. The reason for that is that squid translates do Lula in Portuguese, which is the name of Brazil's former president and, soon to be, a candidate in the 2022 elections. Netflix most likely wanted to avoid getting too political...I mean, can you imagine the memes?!?

Their official explanation is that the squid game is not familiar to Brazilians. But I believe the best explanation is really the political one. Not gonna stop the memes through election, though.

Mi-nyeo's method of killing Deok-su is also kind of foreshadowed, after the tug of war she relishes in how "powerful" she felt when leaning back. This is how she managed to grab Deok-su and pull him off the edge of the glass bridge with her - by leaning back and grabbing him.

If you’re introducing someone to this show, give as little information as possible. I went in knowing nothing, that first game was an incredible reveal. I can’t believe how much Netflix spoils in the trailers.

Also with a show like this, I hate seeing even a second of later episodes because it's hard for me to not remember "that character will be in another game so I know they don't die here".

Fun fact : When you go to the episode where 001 or Oh il-Nam, is shot, you don't actually hear his body drop after the gun shot, which is where I knew that the old man was much more than just a player.

@@aft5264 He's the one who has all the strategies for a weaker team to beat a stronger team in tug of war. So, it might not have been impossible for him to die, but it was unlikely.
When Il Nam pissed himself, that threw me off I didn’t suspect anything either.
I saw another theory on that part. basically in that scene where he is laying in the bed, there is an empty water bottle next to him. the original person who noticed this is guessing that he is trying to see if Seong Gi-Hun would help him or not

I interpreted it as him being scared because the alarm was going off and he could get caught
Ali can be seen as a metaphor for the treatment of low-wage foreign workers in Korea. He lives in Ansan, which is a factory town near Seoul, where lots of workers from SE and South Asia live (it is also the city from where the students from the Sewol ferry came from). He tries to conform to society, learning Korean and customs (note his usage of honorifics). He works hard, but is betrayed by those he trusts.
I had the same take away. The whole drama is an indictment of Korean dog eat dog capitalism. that said it does not endorse communism either.
001 also calls the end of the "bonus game" when the participants realize they can kill each other every night, he stands up in his bed and waves at the camera saying "Im scared, please end!" and then the "Black Mask" leader orders to finish the game, that's then I realized that 001 was at least a VIP in the game.

I think one of the main themes of the show is the fact that there is no winner of Squid Game. If you won the game, you'd either be so traumatized you would not be happy to have won the game (like Gi-Hun is) or you would be deluded into sociopathy in order to deal with what had happened in the game (like the Front Man is, a former winner. He's so sociopathic he decided to become the Front Man of the game and even killed his brother to protect it). This is an allegory for the monetary economy and capitalism. Not only is there no winner and the game is simply entertainment for the elite, but the players are constantly told the fantasy that the winner will have a better life and that the game is "fair." They even kill and hang people who cheated at the game from the ceiling to clearly demonstrate how "fair" the game is. This is a gaslight. Squid Game is not a game at all, it's just a genocide, just abuse. To call it a fair game gives the players the illusion that they have control. They have none. And the only way that the games can function is for the players to willingly participate. I'm proud of the players who realized the truth and voted "X" and the ones who didn't return.

His brother could have shot him in the head etc but it was a shoulder shot and we didn't see a body. .
Not only no real winner, but the old man turns the final survivor into what the old man complained about being: so rich nothing satisfies you. An empty existence. Except with loads of guilt and trauma too.
What about the umbrella that the camera pans to when player 456 leaves his ex-wife’s home? His cookie later in the game was the umbrella ☂
And before he rejoins the game, the detective arrives to his house with an umbrella.

i think that was to show that his daughter was going to go outside, and then when she did she saw him punch the guy.
That was just a connection to his story about how he would always forget his umbrella as a kid. Apparently he still does as an adult.

I knew from the moment he didn’t know what odds and evens were he was going to get screwed by his partner. I expected more lies (like with GI Hun) but still. Broke my heart because he had a wife and baby waiting for him. 😭

I have a strong feeling that player 001 is the unknown father of the protagonist! I felt that when 001 told the protagonist "I'm sure that your father used to beat you for not drinking milk when you were a kid" then the protagonist replied "yes, how did you know that?!". Add to that, both player 001 and the protagonist agreed that they used to live in a very similar neighborhood during the marble game.
I also thought they would reveal that he was the father during that scene where he's lying in bed dying.
I’m glad they didn’t go for this reveal. I felt like the whole season was full of every movie cliche they could add.
I dont think so - its just an older man with wisdom talking to a younger man. The street I grew up in - terraced housing - looks like a million other streets. If the old man was his father he would have revealed it at the end.
This makes perfect sense because the scene where the soldiers turned off the lights and the contestants were killing each other, the lights only came on and the soldiers came in after 001 said "he was scared" which could have been a code to break up the fighting.
I’ve read that the termal camera that the guy in control was looking at, made him know that the old man was actually scared. Which is why he decided to stop

The old man crying and screaming about how scared he was, was the most telling clue to me. The frontman had zero reason to listen to this player and end the game. Plenty others were terrified.

The thing I don't understand is that if he was behind it all, why was he so scared in that moment?

I just felt they ended it when they had the proper amount of people for the next game.
Marble game confirmed for me that 001 was main man. When he was supposed to get shot cause he lost and they didn’t show it on screen. Everyone else’s deaths were shown in all their morbid glory.
No, I thought the same until it deliberately didn't show Ali either. I figured it was possible that they decided it was too much to show the beloved characters dying.

(Edit) Y'all we are talking about the character he played, a Pakistani named Ali who is kind ,nice and innocent who gets taken advantage of his innocence in his workplace and at the game and ends up dieing. Well the game shows the cruel side of humanity towards pure innocent people. We know he's a Indian In reality who played the Pakistani character. It's not a stereotype character Ali is shown as a individual pure innocent human not a representative of Pakistan. Squid game is not just a series about thrilled games if you look deeper about everyone's character you can find different types of humanity.
Ali- pure innocent
Old man- who believes money drives humanity
North Korean- a victim of human cruelty who lost faith in humanity.
Deok su- A gangster ends up falling in his own deeds.
Jun ho - Who ends up getting betrayed by his brother.
Ji yeong- victim of abuse.
Sang woo- A gifted student who has too much expectations from others ends up stealing money.A fear of responsibility.
456- A normal life which stands between love, money, betrayel, kindness, power, self esteem. He shows choice is always in our hands we become what we choose.
Actually there is not even one good person in the game not even 456 he realised it only at the end but it was too late , everyone were selfish and didn't think about the people who died cuz the money they got its actually lives they actually killed. That's why at the start they clearly explain the game only after the first level and gave them choice to choose what is right.

Everyone’s talking about episode 6 but what choked me up was the final game. After everything sang woo did, the people he killed to get closer to the prize. Gi-hun still couldn’t complete the game and take the money. Begging sang woo to agree with him to end it so they would both live. He would rather be penniless and save his childhood friend. Things only became more emotional when sang woo did a noble thing and took his only life so gi-hun could win anyway and get the money. Squid game is an absolute masterpiece.
I figured sang-woo killed himself because he realized he couldn't physically beat gi-hun and gi-hun was never going to complete the game himself, but he knew his mom needed the money and that gi-hun would use some of the money to help her
@@zhanoe8222 It might also be that he had given up and finally realised all the terrible things he had done so couldn't bear the thought of living with that guilt.
A very small detail that I've noticed is that after the first round 255 were eliminated, which is the highest most 8 bit games go before breaking.
The first big clue about the old man is when Jun-Ho breaks in to the record room and is going through all the files. He finds the current game file and when he opens it the first page is for player 002. 456 is also in there and they are both still alive and playing at this point. Why would player 001s file not be in there?
At first, I thought this show was going to be an over-hyped Korean drama, but after the first episode I was sucked in to the story's intrigue and aesthetic visual art. Needless to say, I get why this show is so popular. It does deserve the hype!
You should definitely watch more K-Dramas if you enjoyed this one! I’ve been watching K-Dramas since 2015 and a lot of South Koreas popular actors are extremely talented and their dramas are really well written.

I'm only seen a few Korean movies like Oldboy, Parasite, and The Host. In which I loved every one of those, but Squid Game was the first Korean show I've watched that I can recall.
@@MattJett Goblin: The Lonely and Great God is amazing (also called Guardian depending on the streaming service) and Scarlet Heart Ryeo are a couple of my personal favorites.

Even with all the hints about Oh Il-Lam, I genuinely didn't see it coming. I loved his character and just thought he was an old man who had nothing to lose and everything to gain and couldn't stop comparing him to Boomi from ATLA bc of how seemingly mad but acutely aware he appeared throughout.

I didn’t see it coming either, The only thing I deduced was that somehow he played the game before, which was why he was 001. Maybe the players from a previous game voted to end it like they did here and he didn’t come back until now. But yeah, as to being the man behind it all, never guessed it.

Normally I'd agree. However, the premise lends itself to there being in-continuity foreign versions of the islands with regional specific childhood themed games. So not a remake but rather a series set in the same universe.

Another small detail that I’ve not seen posted anywhere online:
In episode 2 when Jun-Ho enters In-Ho’s abandoned apartment, we can see the apartment is small and modeled exactly like the rooms the masked workers sleep in on the island - from desk location, to the bed. This shows that In-Ho more than likely became a worker after winning the games in 2015 and wanted to stay in an apartment modeled after their rooms on the island. He probably then worked his way up to become the Front Man. I also believe he is the first and only Front Man.

What i don't quite understand is whether jun-ho had suspected that his brother is still alive and in there or if he was truly surprised that his brother was the front man. Because, if you think about it, to have multiple rooms modeled exactly like one of your former apartments just screams superiority in my opinion. Shouldn't he have suspected it somehow?

I've seen hundreds of Korean dramas and i love watching them.
But there's something about this one that took me only 2 days to finish the whole series. It was indeed a binging session like literally.
It's so worth to watch this drama. Hats off to the director for this masterpiece. I'm sure that this one would take over drama series to a NEXT LEVEL and guess what it really did right?
Every aspect of this show is spot on.
Another metaphor was the chess pieces that they used for the glass tile games were horses - indicating they were betting on horses, of which were made many references in the series.

This series is a fun and very integrated show; I went in completely BLIND. All I knew was that people were trying to convert currency and that gambling was involved SO WHEN I SAW THAT FIRST GAME SURFACE I DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO THINK LOL. Overall a really good watch

Wowww I completely missed the foreshadowing of the characters’ deaths when I watched it. There’s so much detail in Squid Game- I love it so much. And I agree, the Pakistani player was the biggest sweetheart. I was so upset when he was tricked
I feel like the long wait for the script to be picked up by a production company was a blessing in disguise. That time for the writer to go over it again and again helped him add so much more detail.

In Episode 7 VIP, the Contestants were represented as Horse Pieces on a small glass replica of the game. This shows that the VIPS treat this no more than a horse race, and is a reflection of Seong Gi-hun betting on a horse race. Now the tables have turned of us viewers of having to see Seong Gi-hun having to "race" through the Glass Path Game all the while the VIPS are betting on who would survive and make it to the end.

When I didn't see 001 get shot, I thought that was nice not to show it, since it was breaking my heart already. Lol! I was really surprised at the ending, but it would explain why he was having so much fun in the 1st game. I just thought he was dying anyway, so why not enjoy the games. :D

This was foreshadowing the fact that they were the horses which the VIP's were betting on in the game. The contestants are even numbered instead of named the exact same way the horses are.

Not only did the coffins represent the gift gi-hun got for his daughter, but the light on the end of the gun also represents how the players were burned in the coffins after they die

There was one more telling clue which gave it away for me right from the start. Player 1 on his first convo with player 456 literally says "How many this time"? Told me he had played before then add in that he's # 1 and he was up on the top of the bunks during the fight night were even more telling.
Also a few more I noticed.
1. When the Game Master took off his bunny rabbit head mask, you can see that the hands were of an old man...
2. In Ep5 when the alarm sounded and woke up all the contestants, they all look confused, but then they panned to the Old Man and he looked visibly terrified! He knew if there was a problem on the outside, then he won't be safe on the inside!

I though Oh Il-Nam was suspicious in episode one because he basically explained that he had a lump in his brain and he wasn’t gonna live much anyways, which kinda means he already knew that being eliminated meant being killed. His though process was “if I die it ok because I’m already terminally ill” and he wasn’t supposed to know they were going to die at that point

I had a feeling the old man wasn't actually a player, and it was confirmed for me when 2 things happened, 1. We don't see him die, any character you don't see die or laying somewhere dead is probably alive, but beyond that 2. The police dude looks through all the files of the players when searching for his brother, and who just so happens to not have an entry? 001, The old man himself, the book starts at 002. I was more or less convinced he was behind... something lol.
I still cried like a baby though.
Not even that remember his brothers picture was the only one blurred from the camera when he was taking pictures. That’s let me know he brother was sort of the game.
The major giveaway was when he shouted from the top of the beds "that if they didn't stop everyone would die" and they immediatly do so.

Did you know that the horse game foreshadowed the ending of this series?
the number 7, 8, 6 is from 06(7), 21(8), and 45(6) the last remaining characters. They were running side to side but at the end, 7 slowed down and 6 managed to win. This scene already told us 067 was going to be murdered, and 456 will win the game.
+also, in the scene taken in frontmen's file room, the number of the entry of this game starts from 2. This is another Easter egg foreshadowing that the mastermind was Ohilnam

There was another hint that the Frontman was his brother. In the scene where The detective was searching the files for his brothers information, all the people before him had their faces shown clearly, However, when he turned to the page about his brother, the brother's face conveniently had a black censor or shadows on it. Black shadows= Frontman's mask

Also how he knew it was a police gun but the guy was working alone , that was when I think the frontman clicked that the intruder was his brother .
I caught the missing face as well and immediately called the front man as the detectives brother. Not to mention the fact that no one he asked knew if his brother was there or not. Then the organ snatchers saying the one missing a kidney was a girl kind of made me believe the brother had an active roll in the game but didn’t really think at that time he’d be the front man.
When the front man ended the rioting instantly after Il Nam said he didn’t want to die was the most obvious clue
