    The 'secret inspector' is really culture specific to Korea. It symbolises justice and relief of the suffering for the lower class people. These were undercover cops who caught out corrupt rulers and was like saviours for the poor and mistreated. I can't be sure whether that's what they actually did or they were idealised in Korean stories to give people comfort. It was good you took time to explain the 'Amhaengeosa'

      I remember from a lot of period dramas when I was younger, there would be a big announcement 📢 "Amhaengeosa (secret inspector) is here!" Then the gate would fly open and the Amhaengeosa would march in with his full 'uniform'. People would be relieved and surprised because the man just the other day was in shabby rags like them and lived amongst them. He'd always come at crucial moment revealing his true identity and saving the day. He was like ironman to us.

Which is kind of interesting because while South Korea obviously has its share of economic problems (especially for young people) and is by all counts still socially very hierarchical and conformist, it’s also much less economically stratified than the US. Their metrics of economic inequality are as low as anywhere in the rich world. The barbs it throws at capitalism-as-currently-practiced seem more targeted at US-style “capitalism”. I totally felt the same that IL Nam did not want Gi Hun to loose at the final game. Rather it was his way of testing/motivating Gi Hun to remember his faith in humanity (after a long period of living in nihilism), thus motivate Gi Hun to act on bringing down the messed up system. I believe IL Nam was changed after playing the game. Him saying "watching can not be as fun as playing" means only when you are in the game do you realize your humanity.

  • @4gags
    @4gags 2 роки тому +162

    Personally, I like to believe that Oh Il Nam represents the cynical, harsh, almost indifferent God of the Old Testament, and Gi Hun (who looks very Christ-like after he goes back to his old life) represents Jesus and the New Testament. Oh Il Nam even said many times how Gi Hun reminds him of his son, whose birthday was “on the 24th”. Oh Il Nam dies as the clock strikes midnight, going from Christmas Eve to Christmas day, turning control of his power to Gi Hun and the more loving, compassionate New Testament, right at the same moment that the bystander shows love and compassion to the homeless man on the street. Gi Hun then saves Cheol from the orphanage, gives Sang Woo’s mom a new child, and gives her half of his prize money. Now, Gi Hun, as God’s “secret inspector” has knowledge of the game, and rips the business card out of the man’s hands in the train station, much like Jesus, being the son of God, had knowledge of heaven and helped man by keeping them away from sin. Gi Hun then sacrifices himself for the good of everyone else by going back into the game (in whatever capacity the next season shows).

    I enjoyed watching this, but I'm wondering about your explanation for Gihun's red hair. It draws a lot from Christianity because of that preacher in the street, but Gihun himself explains that he is a Buddhist, and South Korea is a society with Buddhist and Confucian traditions besides Christianity. 7 is also an auspicious number in Buddhism. This has quite the Western lens, but it's an intriguing explanation.

    I believe the Christian parallels are valid interpretations, but I'm surprised nobody is making parallels to Gi-Hun's own explicitly expressed faith of Buddhism ("this is a Buddhist household!" he says in Episode 1)
    Granted there are plenty of overlaps between Christianity/Judaism and Buddhism to begin with, but one thing in particular it captures for Gi-Hun is his pacifism at the end of it all. Yes he started fighting Sang Woo, but remember he did not actually stab him, Sang Woo killed himself voluntarily. In a Buddhist lens one could see he had great karma (remember, Ali had a physically violent encounter with his boss before leaving to the games; none of Gi-Hun's sins were of a physical nature). Its not like in Christianity where deceit was considered to be the worst sin. In the Buddhist eyes, physical violence (like dismemberment or murder) would incur more bad karma than acts of deceit. Mind you, the worst "sin" in Buddhism is ignorance itself, especially if one lives his life not undoing it
    I would argue Ali's karma is why he died and not Gi-Hun. He didn't have to do that thing with his boss in such a hazardous environment.

    I have a theory that
    *_Ji Yeong was actually another trap planted by Il nam_* since Il nam is of old age, he *_would’ve wanted people to suffer the pain he did when his friends died and he had to keep living_* , and he wanted Sae Byeok to go through that.
    Also, *_Ji Yeong was never even in debt, she was in prison for her whole life_* because she killed her dad, so it wouldn’t actually make sense for them to choose her in the game, I mean, I get that she had nowhere to go and nothing to do with life anymore but she would’ve inherited SOME money from her mum or/and dad?
    *_The game was specifically for people in debt_* , but she said a man was waiting at the prison, but that means *_she didn’t play the card throwing game with him_* because you need to exit prison for that, so she said that he just gave her the card and left, even though they’re supposed to play the game with everyone, as we saw they did it with everyone at the train station in the last episode where Gi Hun was watching.
    Since Il Nam is of old age, he probably would’ve lost so many people close to him. It’s like being immortal, but watching your friends and family die. he wanted that to happen with Sae Byeok.
    *_Both Il Nam and Ji Yeong both died in episode 6 "Marbles", meaning Gi Hun lost a close friend (Il Nam) and Sae Byeok lost a close friend too_* , in the same episode. He wanted them to both suffer before they go to the end. and what a coincidence that they just had to accept that *their close friend died willingly for them* , and they both had to live through the guilt. Ali definitely wasn’t a trap though, because I’m sure the frontman looked into Sangwoo's history of embezzlement and sly, cunning nature, he knows that he will do anything to get his way.
    *_The old man knew that Gi Hun was playing him and felt guilty, and Sae Byeok also felt guilty of letting Ji Yeong die for her but the connection is that both of these traps both died willingly for their close friend._*
    *_TDLR_* : Ji Yeong is a trap set by Il Nam.
    By the way, if it was too long, but you would've liked to read some, I have bolded some key points. Also please let me know if you've ever seen a theory with this idea, I've been looking for clarification. Tell me if you think I got anything wrong, too. :)

    Very interesting analysis, especially in how you tied in the seraphim and secret inspectors as interceders between God and people. In the last scene between Gi Hoon and Il Nam, I feel that Gi Hoon derived his power in being willing to give up anything and everything. There is a freedom in no longer being tied to your life or possessions. In this way he is able to rise to be able to effect change, as symbolized by his fiery red hair. It does make me hopeful to see a message where there is a glimmer of possibility that some people are willing to keep hold of their values and humanity and not give in to the competitive brutality of life.

    To all the people who are offended or saying that his take on Christianity is wrong, he never actually says that Christianity is wrong and even counterpoints a religious argument after he makes one. He's merely elaborating upon the show's possible comparison between a pessimistic view of Christianity and US-style capitalism, and I find it quite interesting. Those who are refuting his notions are actually perpetuating the very system he's describing: utter devotion to a system that is rigged against you. Not saying that Christianity is bad, of course, but it is ironic to say the least.

    People say that the show is about capitalism, it isn’t, it’s a take on the issue of consumer debt which is a problem in the US and has become a ballooning problem in South Korea. Consumer debt is where people borrow money to buy things that are out of there means of affordability. Whether it’s being vain, tough luck or paying for college instead of a trade school, and taking debt for it. That’s not capitalism it’s consumer debt and consumer credit

      @@mrandursun respectfully, if you look up the interview on indie wire he talks about it being a satirical take on capitalism and cites out the Lehman Brothers crisis of 2008 when he started writing the story as a source. The Lehman Brothers crisis was a consumer debt crisis based on loans not properly secured but placed as fully secure. This makes sense through that lens as Il Nam was lending out debt and wanted to see how far people would go for money. I think it’s a common misconception and a lot of people cite headlines saying it was a take on “modern capitalism” instead of consumer debt, since that’s not a hot button word that gets clicks.

    I think that their final game in the Sky Building was similar to the Ferry challenge in the Dark Knight. Il Nam was the Joker who believed that people are inherited to look out for themselves first, similar to Arthur Fleck in the Joker. People see a man dying in the street and walk on by. In the Dark Knight, the Ferry passengers eventually help each other just as someone helped the dying man on the street; and that some good remains with humanity.

Even the preacher only cares about preaching, not asking Gi-Hun if he is okay. Il-Nam is God and he is cruel and selfish, while Gi-Hun is a Jesus like figure who actually cares about helping, but even he is incredibly fallible. I think that draws parallels back to Gi-Hun being sort of the Jesus in the situation, because Gi-Hun will fix what Ill-nam (God) started. Thus ending the squid game. So through Gi-Hun, Ill-nam was able to understand the poor and have his views challenged one final time with the wager on the homeless man.

    No offense but i think you completely misunderstood the show's symbolism. 7th floor of the building could much better represent the 7th level of hell which according to Dante's Inferno houses the violent. There's a lot of devil symbolism attached to Il-nam in the last episode and the whole concept of the games themselves (entering by your own free will and essentialy losing your soul for the material gain for example) so i think Gi-hun's red hair represents him being forever scarred by all the evil he grapled with even though he chooses to move on and keep fighting. In a way the Front Man could represent an antichrist because he even though he "won" he still succumbed to the evil and once again chose to stay with "the devil" as his henchman and probably countinued his legacy after his symbolic death.
    In short i think the whole show represents Gi-hun's counter initiation which he miraculously survives and discards even though he leaves scarred but as a martyr with a newfound hope in humanity and its inherent good.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 2 роки тому

      Another good possible take! Il-Nam could be the devil and Gi-Hun could be Michael. Michael, also a seraph or archangel or however you want to interpret. Michael also may have taken Lucifer's place after his fall. However I do think the God and Jesus analogy works slightly better since there are the theories of Gi-Hun being Il-Nam's son. It works because I think the show is a critique on religion and the belief in God rather than any form of endorsement of religion. If anything it demonstrates the dangers of putting your faith in a God, or money as God, and demonstrates that people must care for each other or fall.

    • @Peregrina
      @Peregrina Рік тому

      @@802Garage If the story mirrors Dante's inferno I believe that the main character would be Dante who struggle with his own morality and get a glimpse of what hell looks like and if he could be saved from his fate. Dante much like the main character is trying to reach out and understand those who are in purgatory with him. He is often an observer or have philosophical discussions about life, death and religion. When Dante get back to life after the horror journey he decide to follow a more rightous path since he doesn't want to end up in hell. Though it is stated in Dante's inferno that people could be saved from purgatory if they chose the path of God or Jesus.
      The Dante metaphor is not perfect for the main character in Squid Game. So him being the representation of Michael could be closer to the story.

    Can’t help but think this heavy egregious God theory is a reflection of your personal grudge against Him. One thing all of the players, guards, higher ups & VIPs have in common is turning away from Christ. (Gambling, stealing,fraud,murder..etc) & THEN continuing to walk in the opposite direction. 🚶🏻 ✨ When you turn to the world (i.e the squid games) to solve your problems… you allow whoever/whatever in it to give you an answer. (Kill or be killed) I see the games as very much of the devils playground.. even more so that the devil is the one pulling the strings.. because if you notice the players, guards & vips leave JUST AS BROKEN IF NOT MORE SO than they were before, with Christ that will never happen. Christ renews ones heart & soul gearing them towards holiness, NOT carnage & blood shed.
    Also, the references to the 7th floor & many biblical references throughout the show .. are also in essence mockery.
    The backwards believer prayer one second, killing the next.
    Ji-yeong’s father being a pastor and abusive and a murderer all in the same breath.
    The street preacher being walked past whole He shares the gospel with everyone who can hear.
    All in a way to say God doesn’t matter.. in the games they can be their own god.. they have the power to control their own destiny in the game.

    The more I hear about Squid Game, the more I start to realize just how inaccurate a depiction of Christianity and God that it actually portrays. It’s incredibly sad.

    The beginning and ending parts of this video, about the secret inspector, were pretty great. The middle part seemed a bit out of place and messed with the pacing of the video. I'm glad I didn't stop watching at the middle, otherwise I would've missed out on the end. Close one!

    I think you may be overthinking the red hair thing. Red always represented the bad guys during the whole show. That may be the reason he would never chose it, cause he always was wearing green, he presssed the green button and so on. Dying it red means he is embracing his destructive side, or smthng

    It's always fun to see a show claiming to criticize capitalism end up criticizing elitism, corporatism, and communism instead.

      I would think criticizing rampant capitalism is a criticism of elitism and corporatism. I don't see the communist commentary, though. Can you expand on that?

      @@amiraameera8302 Big TL;DR on this one, but I'm fine with an essay once in a while.
      Elitism and corporatism are separate entities that subvert capitalism by allocating wealth from outside the system (elitism) or by applying government protections and tax incentives to businesses (corporatism). Just to square that away.
      More on the communism critique... It comes down to the word for "utopia" basically meaning "not a real place." In short, Communism is impossible to achieve. How this relates to the show comes to the premise given by the host. "All the players are equal" is a major aspect, but the Squid Game seems to go out of its way to show that they are, in fact, not equal by any means.
      First off, despite a so-called strict adherence to democracy, someone from the engine itself was part of the vote. With regards to the games, the honeycomb cutter game is the most damning to this ruse of equality. In short, the game is made more difficult by decisions made before the game's start. To quote a certain video game character "the game was rigged from the start." This paired with the purposeful manner in which the organizers systematically decimate the players' count is not AT ALL compatible with capitalism.
      Capitalism relies very, very heavily on cross-referencing of economic value. If you cannot win at one "game" in capitalism, you choose another. It is only in wannabe communist states where this idea that the markets are set in such a way. The government sets the "markets" be it the triangle, star, or umbrella markets with wanton disregard for which one is going to be effective. In a capitalist system, when one would fail in the "umbrella market" you would simply hop over to the "triangle market" because everyone else is doing that and having an easier time.
      With regards to the honeycomb game (and really, most of the games), the people who are taking the most risk like the "umbrella market" in honeycombs, the people acting as shields and supporters during red light green light, and those who chose to be at the front during the glass steps would be receiving far greater rewards for their success.
      The zero sum game, as the the man up-top puts it, is working on a remarkably socialist system where those who put the most work in are rewarded exactly the same as those who put in less work. This is reflected in corporatism as well, where a CEO is effectively safe as (even if the company crashes and burns) the government will absolutely bail out the business. Likewise, capitalism being used would not need government spending to "rescue" its most valuable businesses.
      To bring it all back to the start: corporatism relies on the working man's tax money to keep giants afloat. Corporations then make it hard for independent businesses (with no tax dollar) to succeed without venture capital...probably from a subset of elites with lots of foreign liquidity.
