One thing I might add about these motivational "Gurus" is that they need narcissistic supply, because most of them are narcissists. I like what you said about how their focus is on positive thinking, which in of itself is not bad; but can also be an avoidance of pain like you were saying in your video.
And he does it so timely and effortlessly. Imagine conversations with people he doesn’t like. He would shade them so casually not sure if they would notice until after the convo was over LOL. I love listening to him LOL
Because you’re rational and of sound mind, often times these con artists prey on those who’re going through a difficult time and thus aren’t thinking clearly and are easily manipulated. It’s all very calculated, these ppl know exactly what they’re doing
I completely agree with your closing statement-“never listen to spiritual and motivational gurus.” I think a major contributor to their success is the fact that many people enjoy the feeling of belonging to a community that shares the same values and ideas. So, even if something may look a little off, that might be overlooked if a group of people is endorsing it. That’s sad and dangerous. Thank you so much for addressing this important topic Dr. Grande!❤️
We joined "Chapel of Light" in Lake Whitney TX many years ago. It was New Age and it made no sense to me and I was not liked as a result. There was a woman who said I could quit taking meds for epilepsy and my husband convinced me to do just that. The lady who balanced swung a stone of some sorts over my head and she said I was healed and stop the med. Well of course I had a seizure and finally my husband saw the 'cult' for what it was and we were ostracized. These folks would have nothing to do with us because we opposed what they were doing. They always wanted money. And they always were smiling and happy. made me want to pull my hair out!
Interesting comment. While I'm sorry you had a seizure, and could have died....that experience helped you dodge a huge bullet! Glad you refused to be a victim of this huckster! ❤🧡💛💚🖤💙🤎
I too had a friend tell me that she was so proud of her son for stopping the medication he was prescribed in the hospital after an assessment for depression. She supported him in “beating it” with Jesus help. I was speechless, but now know I would have asked if she could follow her own advice and beat her serious heart condition without her medication? She had medical issues and was religious about her medication and Doctors recommendations.

Hello Dr. G! One of the things you say that I love the most is that someone "has a poor relationship with the truth!" I use that all the time because it sounds SO much better than "he was lying." As a teacher it's very hard to say to a parent that their child is "lying" to them but they take it much better when I say "they have a poor relationship with the truth!" Thanks for this little quip!
What's really amazing to me is how gullible people are, especially when it comes to religion, politics and money. Lastly. Once Oprah shows interest in someone run in the opposite direction.
Omigod yes! nd I really used to like Oprah. But here's the thing about the gurus, and I've had lots of practice observing, being a child of the '60s, why does no one work out that if a person is offering you a higher spirituality no money should be involved, right? Why is this hard to see?
It wasn't even a real sweat lodge. No Native American would use a plastic tarp for a sweat lodge. It's supposed to "breathe" and it's also not a "contest" to see who can tough it out the longest.
Look up Coffeezilla’s interview with the victim’s mother. James Ray killed a young woman and then gave her grieving mother relief money that was less than her daughters cost of attending the event. So he essentially still made money off her dying
“Responsibility is a unique concept... You may share it with others, but your portion is not diminished. You may delegate it, but it is still with you... If responsibility is rightfully yours, no evasion, or ignorance or passing the blame can shift the burden to someone else. Unless you can point your finger at the man who is responsible when something goes wrong, then you have never had anyone really responsible.” ― Admiral H.G. Rickover, Father of the US Nuclear Navy

Honestly, books from Louise Hay have helped me more than therapy.. therapists don’t seem to be interested really helping you.. they just listen and ask stupid questions. But in the books of Louise Hay there she gives you help, for example "we are all victims of victims" meaning, we think our past was bad, but if go back a generation and we try to think what our parents had to endure, it puts everything in perspective. Also she says to imagine your parents as 4 year olds and to hold them and say it’s okay, they don’t have to be afraid...etc..this helped me sooooo much more than a therapist who would only tell you :you can’t change your parents you can only change yourself, and leave you hanging with that hole in your heart...

a lot of people don't understand even basic human psychology. People often confuse narcissism and confidence for expertise and wisdom. And the biggest problem of all - people want quick fixes. As a teacher I've seen it a thousand times; anything that says "quick and easy," "every other system is doing it wrong," or "here's the secret you need to see," will make a lot of money. As long as people want something other than hard work and determination, they'll jump in and pay good money for it.
Guru = enlightening people’s philosophical outlooks (free of charge). If your wisdom doesn’t help 100,000s of people live fruitful lives, it’s taboo (in India) for others to refer to you as ‘guru’. The word’s _not_ a synonym for mentor or life coach. Ty Dr. Grande!

I can also say, that I am truly happy in my thoughts now. It was like my brain was trained to be angry before, it was easy to be angry. Now, it's easy to look at brighter sides, respond with positivity to negative comments, and I think I retrained my brain to start with joy first, then anger if needed. It's gotten me a long way in the last 13 years! (A whole lot less drama too😉🤭 Edited to say, I'm only rich with happiness, otherwise I'm broke AF. 🙃

People of all ages EAGERLY believe in simple/easy (and nonsensical) answers that mirror their desires; or promise to take away some type of pain. An excess of faith in anything can be a problem. There was the time an old man was in bed passing away, his sons were in the room, while his wife was in the kitchen making cookies. The old man could smell the cookies cooking and says to one of his sons, "Please bring me a cookie. I must have one last of my wife's cookies before I die." Son leaves the room and returns. Old man says, "Did you bring me the cookie?" Son says, "No, mom says they're for after the funeral."

This is a brilliant and perceptive video, with a little subtle humour thrown in. It provides a lesson that sadly will be lost on those attracted by New Age gurus (ie conmen) because as Dr Grande says they are in a comfort zone that is preferable in their minds to facing truth.
i think there are more reasons why people go to these new age guru's. Not just that they are unwilling to do the hard work it is to go to a therapist. They could have had bad experiences with therapists, feel that it doesn't help, therapist may be unable to help them with the feelings they have, and so on. I found the audiobooks by Louise Hay, and while she might be a "new age guru" her teachings have helped me tremendously; she wasn't very "woo woo", and thought me to forgive my parents and get on with my own life, stop blaming others for my failures, and that I can do it despite all the limiting beliefs I've held over myself. A lot of these things a therapist would probably also have told me; but to get to a therapist in my country I need a referral from my GP, and then I will be put on a waiting list. It can be years before you get anyone to talk to.
A VERY interesting account of this "guru's" self-centered career, Doctor Grande. -- So much strange information, given to us in a clear, concise manner. A fascinating analysis as always!! 👍--This one really has me thinking, about how EASY it is for people to assume leadership roles, even though they are not qualified.
Much of our life experiences are based on our perceptions not our reality. And this is what spritual influencers - from new age gurus to good old-fashioned prosperity preachers - prey upon: The power we have given to material wealth and money through our perceptions.
That strongly reminds me of my highschool years. At German primary and secondary schools students have compulsory classes either in theology (catholic, protestant, or muslim) or ethics. A very important subject in the catholic theology classes at my time was how to recognize cults, to understand their social and economic processes and how to defend against their manipulation techniques.
I did a sweatlodge once and I got heavy extreem migraines, and also almost died of hyperthermia . The Shaman told me it was normal and to stay in the lodge, but I really got very sick and felt like my head explodes. He encouraged me to stay in and thank god I said: no, I am going out now. I really think if I stayed longer I would have had serious injury. Or worse. I had an extreme migraine for a week after. Sweatlodges are not healthy! It should be foribidden. You are forced to stay in and the whole group encourages you to stay in, but your body screams that you should go out now! If that isn’t intuition enough, I don’t know what intuition is. I was in the spiritual world ( New age world) for a whyle but since the Corona pandemic, I saw how dangerous these gurus are, telling everybody to don’t weir masks and that the Corona virus is fake, and that your should rebel against the rules and the gouvernement, and if you get the vaccine you will have a deadly cocktail put in your body and all that nonsense. And I was shocked to see how many people believe this. I lost a lot of my spiritual friends in this pandemic who believe this shit. I think they are completely insane and like if they are in a cult. They were very kind and nice people but now they seem schizofrenic.
sweatlodges are around for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. the benefits countless people have from sweatlodges is immense. then aruviel evenstar comes and says it should be forbidden. delusional you are.
You know spiritualism is a aspect of the occult. It’s about oneness once you empty yourself that’s when you’re enlightened all the meditating is just calling spirits (demons) to you. Same with the death of yourself. Christian do it but are filled with the holy spirit( happens by being dipped in water)but in new age it’s demons but you’re told it’s oneness and we’re all god. Once you’re possessed if you can control it you can’t become successful from the supernatural help or you’re ruined star hearing voices so you start doing drugs or want to kill yourself.

@@bernardsmith1230 I actually agree with you that making a vast amount of money (Tolle is worth an estimated 70 million dollars) is rather contradictory to the core principles of spirituality. But it is not just him who is benefitting financially it simply goes with the territory if you are successful and have a big audience. Essentially if he really practiced what he preached then yes he should use that money to help other people. I know I would if I had that wealth but everyone is different. Also the point you made about depersonalisation can’t really be directed at Tolle in particular for what he teaches. And that is because this is something that is well documented within spirituality in general often referred to as the “dark night of the soul”. It is very common. And yes it is potentially even worse than normal depression. I have experienced it personally. This deep existential angst accompanied by depersonalisation and derealisation is a dark side of spirituality that is not often acknowledged. I agree people should be made more aware of this. But what Tolle teaches is not revolutionary, he is not saying anything new. His teachings and concepts are really a rehash of Buddhist, Taoist and Advaita Vedanta philosophy. He simply introduces eastern spirituality to a western audience.

I like what you said about how their focus is on positive thinking, which in of itself is not bad; but can also be an avoidance of pain like you were saying in your video.
Most of them are COVERT narcissists. As HG TUDOR call them: "Mid-rangers".

I'm so glad I'm cynical. It's saved me thousands of dollars.
A lot of people don’t realize that getting rich quick is pretty rare and usually an unreliable path to success.
They say you can be “incredibly intelligent” and still become the victim of a cult, but I think that’s BS. No way am I worshipping any human being.
Same! If you are aware of anything at all, why on earth would you buy off on these things?!?!
Because you’re rational and of sound mind, often times these con artists prey on those who’re going through a difficult time and thus aren’t thinking clearly and are easily manipulated. It’s all very calculated, these ppl know exactly what they’re doing
I completely agree with your closing statement-“never listen to spiritual and motivational gurus.”
I think a major contributor to their success is the fact that many people enjoy the feeling of belonging to a community that shares the same values and ideas. So, even if something may look a little off, that might be overlooked if a group of people is endorsing it. That’s sad and dangerous.

it's the "always smiling and happy" that makes me want to run fast, run far.

I learn so much. I finally can explain the phenomenon of chicanery involved in these fraudsters. Thank you so much Dr. Grande. This situation is tragic.

That strongly reminds me of my highschool years. At German primary and secondary schools students have compulsory classes either in theology (catholic, protestant, or muslim) or ethics. @@andybrown3016 I actually used to be obsessed with it and Tolles teachings. Now I find it and Tolle very cult like. On a surface level some useful things that even a psychologist would recommend but beneath that very manipulative and potentially dangerous. In fact in cult forums Tolles name comes up often where people have experienced depersonalisation and are suicidal after what initially felt peaceful to eventually turn out disastrous.
@@andybrown3016 also what sort of activism is Tolle involved in apart from sitting around ignoring everything. Does he care about starving children or our future planet ect.
He simply introduces eastern spirituality to a western audience.

Common sense would tell anybody that the terms "harmonic wealth" and "spiritual warrior" are bullshit marketing terms devised to make weak people feel good about themselves without having to earn it.
Your info on James Arthur Ray and Eckart Tolle are very interesting. Would you consider doing a video on Byron Katie as well?
Yes please!!
Absolutely. That one is way overdue!
People were very upset about his opinions on Tolle. Tolle has many sheep.
When will Oprah ever face consequences for promoting a long series of grifters to her gullible audience? She has done immense damage to a lot of vulnerable people, indirectly, yet seems to be immune to criticism.
She's part of the Liberal Hollywood cult. She's well-protected from any harm.
Shit! On behalf of Australia, I apologise for The Secret. I had no idea it was us 😩
I used to believe in a bunch of this stuff plus more back in the 90s. Now I don’t believe in anything, so much more relaxed and happy.
_[laughing]_ Oh hello, mind twin!
I think many of us have been temporarily seduced by such lovely nonsense. I was in the late 80s. Like the op, I can't say I truly believe in anything now, other than to be kind.
Has the doc not-diagnosed Depak Chopra, only speculated what might be going on with a kook like him? I would enjoy that.
Chopra's niche in life is reassuring rich Americans that he knows how to (and can teach them how to) sneak their elephants through the eye of the biblical needle.
@@petertreid Didja know? The "eye of the needle" was a small door in the wall around Jerusalem. For a camel to go through, the beast had to crawl on its knees.
@@JiveDadson Did you ever try to get a camel to crawl on its knees? Did you ever see a camel crawl on its knees? Probably not. Camels have no knees on their back legs. The "eye of the needle" gate is a myth. The Aramaic words for camel and rope are very similar [G'aMLoA vs KHaB,LoA]. More likely the quote is a mistranslation of the more logical "It is easier to get a rope through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter [heaven]."
@@JiveDadson Sounds feasible, alright.
🤔
Nice deadpan delivery. Dr. Grande is either a sociopath or secretly hilarious.
Thank you, Dr. Grande, for explaining the appeal of gurus for alleviating mental pain. Counseling is a necessity to safeguard against this vulnerability.
