at 182K miles I was noticing in colder weather that going up a slight rise I was getting a little rolling hill throttle feed; so thought it was time to clean the EGR. My EGR with hose and 3 bolts removed came out like a 350 chev distributor with very little pull; just a little twisting. The three blade prop was a little lazy in returning to home with a little clink sound. Sprayed the prop with brake cleaner while holding the prop side close to the earth and some paper towels to collect the buildup and all was good. Now runs like it did when new with the throttle dropping rpm at low speeds very quickly.
I just got the same error code on my van. Your video was the first to come up in search engine. Thank you for the great and detailed video as usual. Procedure looks easy. I hope mine is going to come out easy (I doubt....ha ha)
It seems to me the EGR valve ought to be taken out, say once a year, to not only clean it but also make sure it hasn't corroded and isn't stuck. I will be doing that with mine in the future. Thanks for the great video.
It took me forever to find some video of my same egr valve setup, I have to mention that mine it's a Mercedes w906 315cdi and at least mine has the same setup here in Europe, maybe you can put it in the title/description because mine is from 2007 and it goes all the way to 2012, will be helpful for others, thank you a lot!
Thank you, great vid. I had to replace mine a couple of years back. The part alone is >$400. I have the old one and some day when I don't have anything to do, I'm going to tear it down and clean it up.
From what I am told, if you crack it open you have little chance of getting it back together & working properly. The security screws are security screws for a reason, so I would clean as best I can without removing those.

I had a hard time removing the EGR valve from my '06 2500. In fact, I broke off a piece of the part the coolant hose attaches to. I finally did get it off, cleaned it up, it was still not as snappy the one in your video but it'll do for now given I have no major issues.
You did all the wrong stuff removing that EGR valve. I have broken intake manifolds, damaged sealing surfaces, and broken the valves themselves with that method, and only do it that way when stripping a vehicle. How to properly remove valve from intake: Take a brass drift and a shop hammer. Tap upward along the back upper portion (you will see a notch fro a drift), then the back left portion (where you used that steel sledge head), alternating as it works its way loose. That's it. It takes a lot less time that way, too.
I couldn't agree more. Nothing we did that day felt right, and not much worked either. Someday soon we will revisit the EGR and make a better vid. Thank for the tips and keep an eye out for the next EGR upload.
@@richardgenz7406 Sorry if you got swept up in the comments from 2 years ago or misunderstood my poorly worded response. EGRs usually come out much more easily than this one but we have not found a better way to remove them when they are stuck. If I thought this were leading someone down a wrong path I'd remove it. Following this video advice your EGR will probably come out much easier than shown here. If you know a better way to do it we are listening. This was our very first video 3 years ago. I don't remember the specifics but I'm sure we would not have published the video if it did't help the van. I think our vacuum pump video is the only one that is like "Oh well, that's not it".

I'm not sure there is a good adaptor for the iCarsoft. People tell me the Autel AP200 works well with this adaptor: www.autelsale.co.uk/wholesale/mercedes-benz-14pin-connector-for-maxisys-ms908-and-ms908p.html?fbclid=IwAR05zrYl9NBm7tZg9tByjaEoRfO9gy26TmOWjdAN97zNRwHrFmIVHo7cabY
If you have a really sooty fan is there any other deep cleaning further down in the system that needs to be done before putting on a new or cleaned EGR valve. And how would you do that please?
If buildup is more than a coating and starting to fill the tube of intake manifold a shop-vac and pokey stick can reduce the buildup. Serious cleaning would require removing the manifold and I wouldn't recommend that just for cleaning.
Thank you for this video just pulled mine out for clean up and we'll the damn connection where the hose meets broke. That sucks was stuck. Waiting on delivery if new one (Chinese) And was curious if I should add a little anti seize to avoid this next time. BTW.... this is a workout to say the least. Today can and crank sensor
You should apply anti seize. We are doing that now on all EGRs we install! A workout it is indeed. Good luck on the cam and crank sensors, we recomend a Sprinter specific scanner that can read the "Synchronization between cam and crank position sensors" value to make sure things are synched post operation
Florida Van Man Headed to junkyard tommoro, any parts I should take and keep handy. Got a few things last week but headed back for the injectors, and door parts
@@panchovillasmith8218 iCarsoft MBII works pretty well, but you need to lookup every code. We have a Carsoft handheld scanner that is better about giving a description of each code, but it's got limitations. Autel AP200 Bluetooth is my go-to for diagnostics. Then Xentry DAS is much more detailed diagnostics and has functions the other meters just can't do, like reset intake adaptive, code injectors, virtual compression testing. etc.
Florida Van Man Awesome thank you. I just received the autel yesterday and was considering sending it back to get the carsoft pro. Main reason was I also have a mitsubishi mirage and a mini countryman (wife's). I don't mind paying the extra for the additional cars but correct me if I'm wrong, after one year I have to buy the service again for the two additional cars correct?
My EGR valve wasn't fully closing. I cleaned it up with WD-40 and it looked like new. It fully closes now, but it doesn't make that snap sound. The mechanical portion makes the proper snap sound with the electric motor removed. With the motor attached, it doesn't make the snap sound. I'd like to find out why the motor is slowing down the mechanical portion. I re-assembled the EGR valve and the vehicle seems to run fine.
When the motors get bad they don't snap back. If the van is running fine, run it! But don't be surprised when the EGR starts showing codes and putting you in limp mode. When it finally gives up you won't be stuck on the side of the road and since it was out recently replacing it won't be a big deal. So run it and get every mile out of it that you can. It might last thousands of miles more.
Overheating is usually what causes EGR failure in my experience. When the aux coolant pump doesn't work or the van is pulling too much load, too fast, overheated EGR will cause limp mode and kill the EGR. So be careful with heat if you are just cleaning, not replacing the unit.
No. The van monitors air flow and will trigger codes when expectations are not met. There is a popular "resistor hack" that does not actually work. If the resistor doesn't kick codes your van already wasn't commanding the EGR to open. The resistor only mimics a closed EGR. There are other "tunes" available that are illegal, despite any loopholes you may have heard of. EPA is cracking down on these tune companies and a guy 8 blocks from me settled with the EPA for $850,000 fines. The punishment if prosecuted for deleting your EGR is greater than possession of cocaine and brings a felony record. It is illegal in all 50 states, all of Canada and the UK.
Hi again Bill. Have you discovered another reputable after market ERG? I know you said you were testing that one on the video. But you were unsure at this point. 2005 T1N cheers. Leon.
The cheap on linked on our parts page is what I am using now. It is only weeks old and I've not driven anywhere significant, so I won't recommend it (yet). At $120 vs. $380... I have reasonable hopes.

What did you liquid was that at the end? I bought my 2005 sprinter last year, and the seller said it had no Egr, i presumed that model just didn't come with an Egr. Ive since found out there should be an Egr but i believe its been removed, how would this effect performance?
That is controversial and highly debated. If your van is a European model it might have never had one, as they weren't mandated until a few years later. Generally, those who feel the government is here to control us will swear they get more power and 5mph better fuel economy with the EGR deleted. That would be a 25% increase from 20mpg, and science does not support those claims. Those who feel government is a necessary part of civilization will point out deleted EGR will fail annual inspections in most states and Canadian provinces, be unregisterable to any buyer in those areas and punishment for violating Federal EPA regulations is greater than possession of cocaine. A guy 8 blocks from my home was fined $850,000 a few years ago for selling "EGR delete hardware & software" online.
FVM, got a question? I have a little leak in the AC condenser and have purchased a new one on-line. Will I have to take apart the metal cross bracket for the radiator or is there an easy way? I cannot see in there to figure out just what is needed in disassembly?? VR Chicago Thanks
Taking the crossbar off is *the easy way. It is only 4 bolts, but the headlights are in the way, and the grill pieces are in the way of removing the headlights.... So it can be an all-day event.
I have 2 T1N both 2005 the first had over 425k and had ok power most or the time but the second is a 158" dully and has been sluggish I installed resonator delete but I'm not sure what to do next, ?.
Code reader is essential. If you clear the codes and none come back, the live data will be helpful. If you find your EGR value always at 6% the MAF has probably failed. We have a video shows how to test the MAF. This is a good code reader. amzn.to/3H3mfhI
Can confirm. We have used carb cleaner (Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK)) and brake cleaner (Tetrachloroethylene) with good results. I don't know which is safe for the EGR, but I can say for sure, you do not want MEK overspray on your paint. I have used that chemical for removing paint, before I knew it was in found in carb cleaner. That little clue would have been useful stopping bicycles in my teenage years. Probably best I did no know I could buy MEK in a spray can!!! LOL, It's bad stuff! Tetrach-whatever is probably just as bad. I just don't know it yet. LOL
The MBII comes with the cable to connect to the vans. We suggest the Autel AP200 amzn.to/2GD04Ft for the same function at lower cost. We have a video showing how to set it up correctly for the Sprinter. Tools I got at Lowes long, long ago. I have not found similar ones.
Searching details here ! When cleaning my EGR valve, I saw that the port going to the intake (after egr valve) had wet walls ! Is it normal or my egr valve is leaking coolant ?
No. It is possible your EGR gasket was leaking coolant, but since you had the EGR out for cleaning I assume you sealed that gasket when putting it back. It is likely the intake was wet from oil vapor or condensation also. Humid mid-day air pulled through a cold morning intercooler will condensate a bit.
EGR valve mystery… please advise. I recently bought a 2005 dodge sprinter T1N van. It seems to run OK and have decent power, but out of curiosity, I decided to clean the EGR valve like you show in your videos. Sure enough it was so dirty and sooted up the blades would not turn at all so I cleaned them really well with gasoline. I even took the valve assembly apart into two large pieces and cleaned inside really well and got the blades turning freely and snapping back like you show in your videos. I put it back together and took it for a test drive and the van ran much worse, almost like limp mode as you call it. I pulled over to the side of the road and unplugged the wiring to the EGR just to see what that would do and to my surprise the van ran like a bat out of hell..better than ever. I’m really baffled. Have any ideas what’s going on? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.😅
Once you took apart the two halves of the EGR it was done. They have wound springs and electrical contacts inside that we cannot rewind & connect without very special tools. The security screws should never be removed. If your van doesn't go into limp mode with the EGR unplugged it is either modified (EGR deleted) or the intake adaptive settings are corrupted and no longer adapting. A code reader like we have linked on our products page will read the live data where we can see if the EGR is being commanded by the van. Looking at the EGR live data will help determine if your van is having an issue or been illegally modified by deleting emissions equipment.
Follow up to my EGR valve mystery problem, I bought a new EGR valve and installed it, and the van runs excellent now, almost like a different vehicle. What a pleasant surprise and the best part is the transmission is shifting much more often now like it should. I don’t have to manually shift it so much anymore for hills so my question for you is what is the connection between the EGR valve and the transmission??
@@kirbymoore492 There is no direct link to the EGR but the van shifts based on how well the engine is running. With the EGR sticking open a little the van realizes the limited power it has available by constantly measuring "load". It will adjust the shift times to work with the available power. When power is reduced it will shift later.
yeah, I get moody when I shell out the dollars for parts at the dealer! But, in the long run it is the best vehicle I have come across since my first 180D back in BC (Before Christ).
Yes, cleaning the EGR often solves issues with sticking open or slow to close EGR valves. But if you feel bumps in winding up the spring, or if it doesn't snap! back when done, cleaning isn't enough. They do go bad from old age and/or overheating.
No. EGR is kinda' a headache, but deleting it with a tune is just trading one headache for another. Dealerships will not be able to properly diagnose issues. Deleting the EGR with a resistor simply does not work unless your van has multiple other problems. I'm working with one this week. The owner swears the tune is perfect and van runs great but can't get over 60mph. It is not a FedEx van... He has been driving it stuck in limp mode for the past 2 years. But "the tune is perfect" he says. LOL! And he recommends I delete my EGR too. LO double L!
Sorry too many questions. I once took a v8 engine apart and put it back to together at .5 tolerance. Of course, it was an exercise not real life. How do you know how tightly to attach each part/bolt etc. Is there a reference for people like me?
My official answer is: Yes, there is a chart detailing bolt size to torque setting. I often refer to downloaded repair manuals for torque settings of the specific area I am working. But honestly, I often tighten less critical bolts with about as much force as used to take it out, guessing. That has bit me in the tail many times and we have a video showing repair of the threads of the EGR mounting. I also have a favorite product specific for injector hold-down bolts. It is a *favorite because I have needed it more times than I'm willing to admit, even after trying things that didn't work like Heli-coil. lol
Well,... I think this was our very first video. The cleaning process was fairly correct, but the EGR we cleaned needed more than a good cleaning could do. It needed replaced.
It will make a whine when self cleaning, but nothing new when failing. Most failures are the valve getting sticky or the motor in them dying as motors eventually do.
If it is disconnected and the engine light is not on somebody has probably tuned* the van to remove emissions systems. Not much you can do unless you find out what tune is installed.
The iCarsoft MBII does have live-data for engine monitoring, but it is not a pleasant graphical display. More like a spreadsheet with small pages of specific data points. You need to flip the pages and know what the numbers mean. The Autel AP200 has better displays including simulated dial meters with moving needles and colored zones. It is linked in most of our video descriptions.
everything was fine Great spirit on removing the EGR Valve, but you miss the text drive after put in the new one. just I can sure on my side that is my problem. thanks.
I cleaned my egr valve today, but made mistake when I took it off and little water goes I inside the intake, I cleaned the egr valve, put it back in , start up the van, and there you go the van starts to act funny, it shocked and no power when hit the gas wit a lot of black k smoke coming from the engine. Do u have any clue, please. Thank you
A splash of water shouldn't be a problem. I suspect the EGR cleaning didn't take. Did it turn smooth and Snap back after cleaning? Was the van running fine before cleaning the EGR?

@@FloridaVanMan based in UK. I was confused as Haynes manual states there is one on the 2.1 but I can’t see it. How does the systems differ on vans without. Cheers for swift reply.
REMOVAL: no sure but I think there's a very gentle persuader called WD-40. Of course you don't get the great workout that way. CLEANING: having compressed air and a fine-tipped blow gun is indispensable for efficient removal of solvent-freed material as well as any particles of abrasive cleaning medium that get left behind.
The gasket prevents getting penetrating fluid into any meaningful place until the EGR starts to come out. When you use compressed air to remove material... where does the material go??? Spoiler: Everywhere including places we do NOT want debris. Over 2.4 million Americans suffer injury to their eyes every year. Don't be one of them.
@@FloridaVanMan When I use compressed air I make sure the loose liquid borne material goes to a harmless place. It is not that hard with some practice and basic psychomotor skills, and maybe a big piece of cardboard or an old towel. But good luck with your steel wool.....
@@LEXICOGRAFFER Steel Wool??? What are you even talking about? You cannot catch all the flying debris when you use compressed air to blow and blast it away*, period! Start your own channel if you want to fight about bad techniques and poor practices! Kay???
My glow plug circuit codes were due to 1.bad glow plugs 2. Bad glow plug control module. Had all glow plugs replaced and codes still popped up to find out it was also the module.
@@amybass4005 That's not uncommon. When the glow plugs fail they either blow open circuit or short circuit. If they go short circuit they will blow the internal fuse in the module. New replacement modules have a breaker, rather than a single use fuse. We suggest upgrading all 6 pieces as a set, 5 plugs and 1 module.
I believe it can, but that has not been my experience when they fail. The EGR can fail several ways, stuck open, stuck closed, drive motor stop turning, and more.

" Carhartt shirt with oil spots in the front and Riggs pants in DK with black leather belt." Are you sure he wasn't wearing a Carhartt white T with pocket and spots? I asked. I made some comment about how many of those he had in the drawer and we both started laughing! I think one reason I have not had EGR service and other ills with my 2.7L is that I ALWAYS let the baby warm up to the first mark on the temp gage before driving away; and, I put the trans in neutral while it is warming up to let the fluid and pressure get going. Have fun over there and stay safe.
Much better. It seems to have cured the limp home mode, although the van has not been driven much lately. About 30 miles, running flawlessly. WRONG! EGR delete is a federal crime in the USA, Canada, all of Europe and most first-world countries with penalties comparable to "possession of cocaine". The EGR controls combustion heat by introducing oxygen depleted air from the exhaust. Deleting an EGR is an incredibly selfish act contributing to air pollution, specifically high NOx. In atmospheric chemistry, NOx is shorthand for nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide, the nitrogen oxides that are most relevant for air pollution. These gases contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain, as well as affecting tropospheric ozone, causes cancer in children and respiratory issues for the elderly. But what the hell, you falsely believe it improves your fuel milage and saves you 13 cents a month while making you feel like a big boy, getting one over on the government.
Yep... tried and tried. I didn't show that because I wasn't proud of how I grabbed it with pliers. I went at it with the idea it would either come out or break-off and found it harder to break than I expected. :(
The AP200 has live data for the cabin comfort controls. This will show if the ECM is seeing the A/C button turning on. You can also check for 12v on the only wire that goes to the a/c compressor.
I have not found this same set anywhere. I've had it 10 years or more. They can be found on Amazon but the code reader is here: AP200: amzn.to/3h2gLY0 After putting the code reader in your cart you will find many tori and E-torx sets. The sizes we need for T1Ns are: E10 - E18 & T15 - T50.

Get a dead blow hammer from Harbor Freight to tap that EGR. a couple good taps and it breaks free.

And was curious if I should add a little anti seize to avoid this next time.
BTW.... this is a workout to say the least.

@@panchovillasmith8218 iCarsoft MBII works pretty well, but you need to lookup every code. We have a Carsoft handheld scanner that is better about giving a description of each code, but it's got limitations. Autel AP200 Bluetooth is my go-to for diagnostics. Then Xentry DAS is much more detailed diagnostics and has functions the other meters just can't do, like reset intake adaptive, code injectors, virtual compression testing. etc.

Awesome thank you.
Did anyone else think the sound of the drums at 3:26 was Bill smashing his head on the hood or just me
Ha ha ha ~ I was waiting for the “Ow!”
I found that when taking out the EGR value using a heat gun on the housing will help with removing the EGR valve.
Overheating is usually what causes EGR failure in my experience. When the aux coolant pump doesn't work or the van is pulling too much load, too fast, overheated EGR will cause limp mode and kill the EGR. So be careful with heat if you are just cleaning, not replacing the unit.
Great joke at the end bro 😃
is it ok to block of the egr completely, thanks for the vids, still looking to purchase, just want all info i can get,,joe and misty

Great video. Would carb cleaner work too? Which cleaner is better?
Thanks
LOL
With that scanner does it include the 2006 cable or is that separate... ? What tool set was that... ? Where can I get that tool set?
The MBII comes with the cable to connect to the vans. We suggest the Autel AP200 amzn.to/2GD04Ft for the same function at lower cost. We have a video showing how to set it up correctly for the Sprinter.
Tools I got at Lowes long, long ago. I have not found similar ones.
And what tool set was that... ? Thanks for the reply... very impressed with what you do...
😂 exactly the same difficulty taking mine out from a ‘06. Prob best to clean the EGR valve 1x annually so it does not get so stuck on.
Hi! Do you have a video or can you offer some tips to replacing the air conditioner condenser in a 2004 sprinter van 3500? Thanks!

@@FloridaVanMan ok thanks
Thank You for showing me the EGR! 🙏🚂🎼🌹🛠⚕🎶🎵
Thank you for making this video! Where did you buy the used EGR valve?
I have piles of used parts at home, from vans that have been junked.
ohh that persuation tool is it on sale at Amazon??? 🤣
Thanks brother.
I love these T1N Cans, but they can be moody.
yeah, I get moody when I shell out the dollars for parts at the dealer! But, in the long run it is the best vehicle I have come across since my first 180D back in BC (Before Christ).
Did that fix your power problem?
Yes, cleaning the EGR often solves issues with sticking open or slow to close EGR valves. But if you feel bumps in winding up the spring, or if it doesn't snap! back when done, cleaning isn't enough. They do go bad from old age and/or overheating.
Would you recommend deleting the EGR? Thanks
Bang harder harder lol . Thanks for the video
Sorry too many questions. I once took a v8 engine apart and put it back to together at .5 tolerance. Of course, it was an exercise not real life. How do you know how tightly to attach each part/bolt etc. Is there a reference for people like me?
and why the cliffhanger ending???
Will the egr make any type of noise when it's failing? Or is it mostly just power loss?
It will make a whine when self cleaning, but nothing new when failing. Most failures are the valve getting sticky or the motor in them dying as motors eventually do.
Should I buy genuine merc benz? 1400 dollars or do you recommend other mfg?
Pierburg is the brand to buy now. Wahler quit making them. MillionMileSprinter.com has them.
My 2005 came with EGR valve disconnected, should I try to Clean and . reconnect
If it is disconnected and the engine light is not on somebody has probably tuned* the van to remove emissions systems. Not much you can do unless you find out what tune is installed.
Thank you .
Can you share the link to that socket set?
I think I just found a better one and I have ordered it. This is 12 point sockets so it will work on the E-torx heads!!! amzn.to/3yUkwra
Good stuff.
can you hook up that unit as a engine monitoring device?
The iCarsoft MBII does have live-data for engine monitoring, but it is not a pleasant graphical display. More like a spreadsheet with small pages of specific data points. You need to flip the pages and know what the numbers mean. The Autel AP200 has better displays including simulated dial meters with moving needles and colored zones. It is linked in most of our video descriptions.

A bad EGR can put you into limp mode. A result of limp mode is loss of turbo/ boost

The best way to fix that problem is delete the egr instead
