I bought a T1N with an OM647 engine two years ago. The last owner warned me about the weak engine that was that way when he got it. I watched your video and bought the part. Wow, what a change it made!!! when we got the old resonator off it had a loose top. It would open when boost was applied and dump overboard. Now it drives like it has a new bigger engine. Thank You, Sir.
This was the first FVM video I ever watched!!! So glad to have found it these years later!! UPDATE: So I bought a Sprinter based Winnebago view, DID NOT swap the resonator for a new one, and it created a significant obstacle 4 hours in to the first day on a group (me and four others) road trip to Canada. Moral of the story: DO IT NOW. I wish I had.
This video and resonator saved me from having me throw more money into troubleshooting. Found the resonator as the culprit bc the old plastic one had a crack at the seam. Swamped right out and runs brand new. Thanks much. Now to address the shakiness which I believe is a trans problem.

My 2006 Sprinter resonator failed on the 4th of July, van went in to limp mode. I pulled it and used my solder iron to 'weld' the entire seam, pulling plastic from the thicker body lip of the resonator to puddle filler plastic in to the gap. Reinstalled and cleared the OBD II code and works great. I don't see this as a long term solution so I'm ordering an aluminum eliminator. This might help someone else who is stranded somewhere with the same issue. I think a plumbers torch heating the tip of an old screwdriver could get the same job done with a patient steady hand. However, on a long trip through several western states my 2005 sprinter motorhome began acting like the resonator failed. What you describe is not a common failure in the turbo. I suspect many hoses in the system become the weak point when the plastic resonator is eliminated. Hopefully not a seal in the turbo. Dorman makes a stronger plastic resonator, but that doesn't address your concern.
The turbo resonator is a muffler on the turbo so we hear less of the wind-up. The aluminum replacement is better because it will never break like the plastic resonator. Some folks hear a difference in the sound of the turbo. Most don't because the chance is so small.

That replacement is no longer available on Amazon. Is there another one you suggest? The other ones available have reviews that they don't fit properly. Thanks..
Congrats and welcome to the Vanmily. The vans came equipped with a plastic turbo resonator, some folks refer to as the teapot because of its shape. It is essentially a muffler for the turbo noises. The originals fail at a seam in the plastic and the aluminum will never fail. If you drive with a soft foot, you'll never hear a difference. But when I throw down the accelerator I hear a little whistle that the original part may have muffled. Dorman makes an *unbreakable muffed version, but it is more expensive and not yet stood the test of time.
friend make an oil separator up from clear tube to a T fitting where one hose comes back to the intake and a couple foot hose comes off the T to act as a catch area for the oil, stuffed with stainless steel Pot scrubber from dollar stores , the oil separates on the pot scrubber material and drains down to the T and into the short hose. The drain hose is capped so no vacuum issues he said. you drain the gunk out every few months and none gets in the inlet tract
I might never understand why people do this. That "gunk" is motor oil settling out of the vapor escaping your crankcase. Why not fix the issue with a new or cleaned crankcase breather? We have a video showing how to clean it. A properly working breather will do exactly what the pot scrubbers are doing EXCEPT the oil drains back into the engine where it belongs, not into a clear tube for regular dumping. Take that homemade bandage off and fix the van!
We can fix boost problems. They aren't in the ECM and I can help isolate where they are. 1-on-1 assistance is a member perk. patreon.com/Florida_Van_Man?Link&
I replaced the resonator with the bypass and that thing pulls! sounds so much healthier and nearly eliminated the limp mode. only if i went over 80 mph in certain conditions would the turbo cut out and i'd be at 60 mph until shut off and restart. Could it be something about the rear differential? I'd hear some sort of whirr back there like there was slight play or something against the driveshaft if that makes sense...
The rear differential doesn't have any way of communicating a problem so that won't be the cause of limp mode. A compatible code reader to get the trouble codes will be the best way to get more clues about why this is happening.
What would be a torx wrench set to cover the T1N..NOT socket, wrench set. Doing the turbo resonator upgrade and stopped/stuck at the torx resonator mounting bolts.
I have a 2006 Sprinter 2500. Recently hearing a "deep exhaust note". Thought it might be the turbo resonator. I swapped out the OEM plastic piece for the aluminum. Happy to have the better made part on the van but this didn't fix my deep exhaust note. I'm guessing it might be an exhaust gasket... not sure. Any ideas?
@@FloridaVanMan That's not the sound I'm getting. I did just check if the exhaust pipe has any pressure coming out of it, and it doesn't. I can't feal any pressure at all coming from the exhaust pipe. Maybe the cat is bad?
I've tried to drill out or hammer through our cats and found them impossible to work with. Our mufflers can come apart inside and clog the passage. Our mufflers will usually come off with a removable clamp for testing without cutting. @@JohnJ-sy9qs
Had the Dodge dealership put my replacement resonator pipe on. Drove it about 600 miles and it went into the limp mode. This hose keeps slipping off of the new straight resonator even when the clamp is tight! Can I find a longer hose?
I've installed about a hundred of these aluminum resonators and never had that trouble. I have a video on the same hose popping off the intercooler repeatedly but never really found a cause. Tightening the hose clamp with a screw driver wasn't getting it tight enough. 8mm socket on a ratchet will get it tight!
Hey man ! I am down here in citrus springs FL from NC visiting my sister. Got a po299 code ( turbo underboost) on my way down. Got me here in partial limp mode. Will not get me back across the mountains to get home. Where you at ? Can you have a look at it for me? I may be headed down to Miami in a week or so. I could get it out of limp mode temporarily by turning off then restarting the engine. Then it would have more power until it went back into limp mode and hit 60 max on these flat roads. Not sure if I need to buy a new turbo…. Checked all hoses, air filter was fairly dirty. Would that even be the problem ? It wasn’t horrible dirty though. Do you have a way to contact ? Thanks man Also there is about a teaspoon of oil in the top intercooler hose when I removed it

@@FloridaVanMan I'm living in Alabama NOW but my brother still lives in Clearwater so I'm down there on a regular basis, and might need a experienced Sprinter mechanic to look at my t1n sometime. Do you still work on them?
The title explains, turbo resonator upgrade. We removed the plastic resonator that often fails and replaced it with an upgraded aluminum resonator that will never fail.
I am having a lot of difficulty removing the resonator mounting screws. They are VERY small torx screws (maybe 7/32 or 1/4”). Do you have any tips for getting these off?
Yes, I think they are usually #8 E-torx and #10 is the smallest socket I have. It works but I usually use a 5/16ths 12-point speed wrench. This one is better than mine. amzn.to/3lJIazT
For anyone having this issue... I had to use needle nose pliers to start backing out the bolts then was able to finish using a small 7mm wrench - total PITA
I can confirm what Peter said, 1/4 inch 12 point wrench fits the smallest torx head screws I've seen here. Some vans have bigger heads and 5/16 12 point wrench is great. For either one, a speed wrench is da' bomb!
🎉 Thanks for the video , I have an opportunity to buy a 2002 dodge sprinter with 280,000 mile on it, my biggest concern is about the turbo ,Is it easy to disconnect or just remove few parts , I know will have not the same power , I prefer to run for a while without power than paying to fix the monster turbo
I would not plan to drive more than 100 miles with failed turbo. Replacing it does not require removing a ton of things to gain access, but the three bolts that hold it to the exhaust manifold can be very difficult.
Definitely not a good idea! High idle feature works when the van is in park and the parking brake is set. as soon as you take it out of park or release the hand brake the high idle feature stops working. It is intended for short use, high electrical demands like wheelchair lifts and Tommy-Gate loading ramps. Letting it run a long time to run a/c or charge a battery is a horrible thing to do to your engine. These are not 18 wheel trucks with iron engines. We have aluminum heads on cast iron blocks, not made for idling like big trucks.
We use it when we need to, but we also try to be kind to the environment and our bodies. Brake cleaner is some nasty stuff, Tetrachloroethylene. We eat meat and use aerosol paint, often forget gloves and other PPE... but we feel bad about it. LOL
@@FloridaVanMan can you even still buy brake cleaner with tetrachloroethylene in it? All brake cleaner for sale here is chlorine free, you'd have to special order the chlorinated stuff. Not that i would recommend drinking either one.
Florida Van Man, I installed the Eliminator but where it fits into the turbo it seems a little sloppy. I noticed in your video, it appears you had some friction. Any insight?
The resonators we get don't come with the O-ring so we reuse the one from the old resonator. If it seems to not fit into the turbo deep enough you might clock the turbo. We have a video for that. Or the metal bracket that holds the resonator might be bent.
I have a Dodge Sprinter 2500 2006, I have problem with a bad smell of fumes inside the cab, the mechanic charged the flexible pipe, the oxygen sensor the did the smoke test, I closed all the vents going into the cab, but the bad smell still there, and the more that I drive it the worse the smell gets, what can be causing this problem? Now the mechanic is telling me that maybe I have to change the turbo? But he is not sure that is the problem!!! They also changed the turbo actuator!!! The charged all the muffler pipe for leaks but everything looks good. Maybe you can help me???
How well do your back door seal? Anything that drips from the van gets caught in the turbulent air and splattered on the rear doors. I expect exhaust fumes also get swept into that area and into the van if the doors do not seal well at all. Black Death is a common cause for fuel smell in the cab but I hope your mechanic has looked under the plastic engine cover.
Hi, when we do an oil change video we will cover the steps visually. Until then, here's the text instructions for resetting ASSYST: 1. Get to the screen that shows the wrench and how many miles, then turn the key to glowplug position. 2. Press "Mi" twice quickly. 3. Switch ignition off. 4. Immediately press and hold "Mi" 5. Keep it held down, switch ignition on to glowplug position. 6. Continue to hold miles down until you hear a "BEEP" It may take a couple of tries to get it right, and we will do a video on this!
In the current social climate, I think we should consider renaming this problem. Perhaps ISL (injector seal leak)? The we get a van on the ranch that has ISL, you bet we will be making the video. Are you far from Daytona?
@@dniprodd Driveshaft bearing noise! We'll add it to the list alongside rear diff and Black Death. So many topics to cover, so little vans with these problems.. You're a little far from us, but know these topics are on our radar to cover as soon as we get a van suffering from them.

I have the '06 T1N and the only problem came at 170K with #2 cylinder injector seat washer leaking. When should I expect that original resonator to give out? Thanks
It's hard to say, we have seen some only last 60k. The engine we pulled this resonator off of had at LEAST 400k and its resonator did not show any signs of being blown out. I would say keep the metal resonator on hand for when the plastic one does eventually blow though 👍

i installed an oil catch can so not to clog my intake with black crude....had trouble figurin out where to put it until a light bulb lit over my head...if you got an email address ill send you a couple pics...now no more oil leaking out of intercooler seals to
I had issues with poor acceleration on my 2004 Sprinter eventually I bit the bullet and took it to Mercedes who after a leak off test said it needed two new injectors and a fuel rail. Now the work is completed they are saying it requires further work amounting to another £1000 most of which is labour time to examine wiring. My van does not have a DPF an EGR vale or a MAF sensor. Its had a new turbo actuator and a new high pressure fuel pump .This is the email I just got from them, what do you make of it? ..."Ive spoken with the technician and he has explained to me that that the additional issues that we have picked up wouldn’t have been found until we had done the work on the injectors and fuel rail first. Once these had been fixed and the vehicle was running it then presented with these further faults. The faults that it has presented us with now are for boost pressure. The first thing we looked at for this was the boost pressure sensor and that is all okay which points at the pressure transducer and wiring for it being faulty where the wiring has worn through over time, which i’m told is a common issue on the older model sprinters".
They are pumping you up to buy a new van and offer you a "deal" because of the labor charges they are racking up. If they replaced 2 injectors and the rail in one shot they aren't diagnosing a damned thing. Fluid takes the path of least resistance so we can usually only diagnose one injector at a time. When a bad one is replaced the rail pressure may release through the next bad injector and in some instances we can see from experience which injector will be next to fail testing, but that is a reach. Replacing the rail at the same time is not a reach* it is a leap into bullshit. There is NO WAY they can diagnose a failed rail while there are failed injectors in the system.
So, sorry to bump in here.. uh the turbo De-Resonator, made of metal carries the Resonance forward, thus it continues, this kills the Turbo. so a plastic de-resonator is used to stop the resonance... A 30 dollar lifetime guarantee one is available at every auto store in the world. Usually the connection and hoses and O-roings, and at the mouth of the Intake manifold splits are the problem... with proper turbo pressure.
A "Resonator" is simply a muffler that works at a particular RPM range. Mufflers soften all sound frequencies and RPMs, while resonators eliminate specific sound frequencies with less flow restriction than broad-range mufflers. I'm not clear what you mean. Are you talking about an additional part called De-resonator, or replacing the plastic teapot shaped piece with something you find anywhere for $30? Our service manuals refer to this part as a resonator, and nothing that fits can be bought at local stores in the USA for $30. With over 520,000 miles on my van, I can assure you the aluminum pipe does not cause any damage to the turbo. Any resonance carried forward is absorbed in the intercooler.
my T1N only has 60k miles on it, but obviously I want it to go for a very long time. Is this inexpensive part/job something you would recommend for mine? I've had no limp mode issues but...
If you were driving long trips I would say yes, better safe than sorry. But with that low mileage I imagine you aren't going far from home. When the original resonator breaks it will slow you down, not put you on the side of the road. So maybe not mess with it until it's time?
@@FloridaVanMan just purchased the van a few months ago, definitely planning on long road trips after I convert it. I think better safe than sorry is the answer I was looking for, thanks!
Yes & no, bad air-fuel mix can cause black smoke. But that is not the normal symptom of a cracked turbo resonator in my experience. Limp mode with a swooshing noise that isn't noticeable at first, then within a hundred miles gets louder until you cannot ignore it.
A bad resonator is just a turbo leak, similar to a split hose. Loss of turbo can definitely cause black smoke and poor mpg, but on a Sprinter you should get kicked to limp mode with a turbo leak that big.
@@FloridaVanMan I think the European models are even better? I don't have an EGR or a resonator on either of mine. Apart from one injector passing away, the injector seals failing, an alternator and a couple of pulleys all I have done to that engine is change filters and oil, it's one of the best designed light commercial diesel engines ever built. If they had used screw in injectors and made servicing the glow plugs easier, none could better it .
I have to agree with you there, we got some extra tweaks that makes things better in some ways, but ""better"" in other ways. For example, our 2004-2006 engines have the lower profile intake manifold making glow plug access a cinch. The EGR is generally reliable in our experiences, as long as you clean it yourself at a given interval or just accept that if you don't do anything to them they will break eventually. The resonator is usually a "change once at 100k, never worry about it again" part. Injector seals is something any Sprinter engine seems to have a problem with, but to me that's another part of routine maintenance. Not to mention, maintenance is pretty damn easy on these vans. I agree with you Zambo, the 5 cylinder variants that exist in our T1Ns are some of the best light duty diesel engines ever built.
@@FloridaVanMan Brilliant reply, I didn't think about it but, if the injector seals fail between 100-150K changing them at 80K should stop the problem. I wait until they go then take it to an Iranian mechanic I know who's worked on a fleet of them for over 20 years. I have read so many horror stories of people having nightmares getting them out it's worth the £60 he charges not to give myself the headache. Take care you pair, loving the channel, best regards speak soon Z...

A catch can does not fix ANY problem! An oil catch can is a hack that serves zero purpose in a Sprinter and creates a service nuisance with potential giant mess. Why not fix the problem correctly and clean or replace the crankcase breather, keeping the oil in the engine where it belongs? Regardless, it has nothing to do with turbo resonators.

A properly working breather will do exactly what the pot scrubbers are doing EXCEPT the oil drains back into the engine where it belongs, not into a clear tube for regular dumping. Take that homemade bandage off and fix the van!
Very helpful. Would have liked more explanation of why you replaced resonator with a different (upgrade) part.
The plastic ones eventually fail at the seams causing a boost leak. Aluminum replacement lasts forever.
Great video I have a 2019 sprinter my Turbo is currently fine but when it goes I don't want to pay someone else to do it lol thanks for the video.
I love the intro on the back door. Great video.
Thanks you so much as always!
Hey I really enjoy your content. I have two Sprinter vans both number 2006. They both have Gremlins
I glues the seam on mine. Still running like crap. Scanner says replace Ecm. Hope not but suppose it's A possible variable needing addressed.

@@FloridaVanMan Thanks for all your insight!
What would be a torx wrench set to cover the T1N..NOT socket, wrench set. Doing the turbo resonator upgrade and stopped/stuck at the torx resonator mounting bolts.
5/16th speed wrench fits the turbo resonator bolts. Many 12 point wrenches will fit the larger torx bolts.
I have a 2006 Sprinter 2500. Recently hearing a "deep exhaust note". Thought it might be the turbo resonator. I swapped out the OEM plastic piece for the aluminum. Happy to have the better made part on the van but this didn't fix my deep exhaust note. I'm guessing it might be an exhaust gasket... not sure. Any ideas?
Is the tone like we hear in this video when the MAF is unplugged? ua-cam.com/video/3nylx7bZO0g/v-deo.html

Any recommendations on where to purchase a new O ring?
www.millionmilesprinter.com/product-page/turbo-resonator-o-ring-seal-04-06
Had the Dodge dealership put my replacement resonator pipe on. Drove it about 600 miles and it went into the limp mode. This hose keeps slipping off of the new straight resonator even when the clamp is tight! Can I find a longer hose?
I've installed about a hundred of these aluminum resonators and never had that trouble. I have a video on the same hose popping off the intercooler repeatedly but never really found a cause. Tightening the hose clamp with a screw driver wasn't getting it tight enough. 8mm socket on a ratchet will get it tight!
@@FloridaVanMan it seems there's a bit of a lip on the end of that aluminum resonator is there supposed to be an o-ring there?
Thanks man
Also there is about a teaspoon of oil in the top intercooler hose when I removed it
Florida Van Man just WHERE are you located in Florida?
Between The World's Most Famous Beach and the world's most famous mouse.

@@FloridaVanMan I'm from St Pete and I thought we had the most famous beach in Florida🤔
@@FloridaVanMan I'm living in Alabama NOW but my brother still lives in Clearwater so I'm down there on a regular basis, and might need a experienced Sprinter mechanic to look at my t1n sometime. Do you still work on them?
What was the upgrade? The cleaning?
@@FloridaVanMan 1/4" wrench worked for me, perfectly.
Replacing it does not require removing a ton of things to gain access, but the three bolts that hold it to the exhaust manifold can be very difficult.
hi what does the factory high idle do. can you leave it on all the time?
Definitely not a good idea! High idle feature works when the van is in park and the parking brake is set. as soon as you take it out of park or release the hand brake the high idle feature stops working. It is intended for short use, high electrical demands like wheelchair lifts and Tommy-Gate loading ramps. Letting it run a long time to run a/c or charge a battery is a horrible thing to do to your engine. These are not 18 wheel trucks with iron engines. We have aluminum heads on cast iron blocks, not made for idling like big trucks.
Did you guys ever hear of brake cleaner? Serious first thing you should do is clean everything down before the job begins, other than that good vid.
How to reset milage after oil change

Is this a special option
Or available on All T1N
A video would be great
Hi, when we do an oil change video we will cover the steps visually. Until then, here's the text instructions for resetting ASSYST:
1. Get to the screen that shows the wrench and how many miles, then turn the key to glowplug position.
2. Press "Mi" twice quickly.
3. Switch ignition off.
4. Immediately press and hold "Mi"
5. Keep it held down, switch ignition on to glowplug position.
6. Continue to hold miles down until you hear a "BEEP"
It may take a couple of tries to get it right, and we will do a video on this!

Not just for warming up. If you want heat at idle then you need it on the high idle.

From what I know the silencer on the newer vans is different enough to not have theses problems.
@@FloridaVanMan Yeah, I ordered a metal reson yesterdi. I had an ESP/ABS problem last year in Mexico. ESP and two other lights were on in the dash and it went in limp mode. The MB dealer said the ABS module was not communicating with the van ECU. New part is $3000. I had it replaced with a used module and programed at MB. Problem solved.

@@FloridaVanMan Like a BOSS 😂👍
Is 2003 the same as well?
Not for the turbo resonator. 2003 in North America won't have a turbo resonator, so nothing there to fail. :O)
my T1N only has 60k miles on it, but obviously I want it to go for a very long time.
Can a bad one of these cause black smoke
Yes & no, bad air-fuel mix can cause black smoke. But that is not the normal symptom of a cracked turbo resonator in my experience. Limp mode with a swooshing noise that isn't noticeable at first, then within a hundred miles gets louder until you cannot ignore it.
Can you buy this bypass for a OM646? i have the same issue on mine
I'm not familiar with a 646. Sorry.
Also looking for one, have you had any luck?
Does bad resonator cause poor mpg and coal rolling???
A bad resonator is just a turbo leak, similar to a split hose. Loss of turbo can definitely cause black smoke and poor mpg, but on a Sprinter you should get kicked to limp mode with a turbo leak that big.
Will a failing resonator cause the map sensors not to read vacuum?
T1N's in Europe don't have resonators, 790K, is that the original engine?
Interesting factoid! It is not the original engine, but from what I understand this engine is at least 300,000 miles old on its own.
The best way to fix this problem is installing a cachcan
