    i love everything you have said here... great stuff. One interesting thing to note is how environments of austerity, in some situations, lead to an unhealthy relationship (in the future) with those things which were kept out of reach. I was addicted to tv BECAUSE my father would not allow us to have cable. I believe this outcome was influenced by a lack in the quality of the family unit. Dad was kinda crazy and led to something I had to "overcome." It sounds like you had two, quality parental units. Much love, I appreciate this video. Cheers!!

      I agree, over suppressing anything can lead to the pendulum swing in the other way.

    Glad this popped up (ironically). I deleted Reddit a couple weeks ago, seeing that it was consuming my life, as you said. I’m very happy for the change of pace, and have been reading more. Thank you for the wise words.

    I agree, people need constent stimulation now, and the more they have it, the more they need it, but it needs to be bigger, better, faster, brighter etc etc and if they don't get it they get depressed. This constent urge for stimulation is not good.

    So true, the word “boredom” has a negative association but it is more of a mindset fertile for progress

    Get out in nature. Work out. Learn a skill like how to work on your car. No social media makes you happy

      "having nothing to do" is the goal, it might be the only way to break out of your existing routine, instead of using distractions to disassociate and continue the status quo. If you live in the middle of nowhere, another option is to move to a place with more opportunities.

    Thanks pseud, although immediately you start off by saying that you are going to make your life boring but then go on to explain why it is so good. Do you speak from personal experience when you say that a life "engineered" for boredom is good. Also, somewhat paradoxically, the more of these "low hanging fruits" we have in our lives, the more bored we often are. Why do I say this? I am a gen Z, chronically online, plays video games, yada yada, and I am bored extremely often. I think the differences between generations you tried to emphasize is not quite as severe as you put it out. Finally, I want to say that your idea of creating a bored life is somewhat incoherent to me. Please filll me in if I am misunderstadning, but are you basically saying that we need to embrace a boring life so that we are encouraged to talk to someone on the train, or go to the gym, or clean our room ect? My problem with this is that i feel as though you are saying, "create a boring life but at the same time when you are bored do something to fix your boredom," Like, if we were to embrace boredom to me that means just sitting and doing nothing but experienicing your boredom which kinda sounds like a form a meditation now that I think of it. I think the only real actionable advise you are really giving is dont go for the low hanging fruits, remove the cheap dopamine in your life.
    Also a question I am curious what you think, do you feel american soiceuty is generally anti intellectual? Like we avoid culturally speaking, self relfection, scientific persuits, spiritual development ect...

    • @intellectual-ish
      @intellectual-ish  16 днів тому +3

      Basically, my thesis is to intentionally reject cheap dopamine fixes (that are readily available to to cure your boredom), and allow boredom to push you towards action on higher level goals (finding quality social connections, education, etc) these will require more effort on your part, but if you are bored enough, you will do them.
      As far the second question, I'm not going to generalize the whole nation, but yes the corporate pc culture tends to make people very "surface level". Although once people trust you, they tend to open up more in private, you just have to find your tribe.
