  • The Darjeeling B-Class 0-4-0 ST locomotive is used on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Himalayan railway. The Sharp Stewart company supplied DHR locos from its Atlas works, Manchester, till 1888. After 1888 these engines were manufactured by Stewart at their Atlas works, Glasgow. In 1903, Sharp Stewart merged with North British (NB) Locomotives and engines continued to be manufactured at Glasgow works. The last B class locomotive manufactured by Sharp was number 28 in 1903. Between 1904 and 1914, NB supplied six 0-4-0 ST locos numbered 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36.
I was commissioned by a friend to build a g scale model of the Himalayan Railway Darjeeling B-Class 0-4-0 ST locomotive. I started with a German Stainz locomotive manufactured by LGB. The chassis, cab, and boiler backhead, were salvaged for use on the 0-4-0 ST. An LGB two axel wagon also supplied a deck and the pivoting truck mounts for the build. The Stainz chassis was disassembled down to the bare motor block Drive rod bosses were removed from the wheels and later replaced by axel mounted external frame counterweights. The external frame was fabricated from styrene sheet. Part of the wagon deck was bonded to the frame to provide a cab floor and running boards. The motor block was fitted to the external frame in front of the cab floor and between the running boards.
A 1 ½ diameter PVC pipe boiler made a strong back for mounting the superstructure. Other parts were from were from the junk box. The saddle tank from the Porter didn’t quite fit so the water hatch and weight were used, but a new tank was fabricated from sheet styrene. The coal bunker was fabricated from styrene sheet and square rod. The sides of the Stainz cab were removed and the rest of the cab was attached to the bunker. There is often need to disassemble parts for adjustment or refit on a custom build. So crews attach parts where ever possible. A fit check showed that a slot needed to be cut in the bottom of the boiler allows it to slip over the motor block.
A front platform with sand box and enlarged steam cylinders was fabricated and attached to the frame. A weight and coupler came from the scrap box. The large cab overhang could cause problems with a body mounted coupler on sharp turns, so the coupler pivot from the wagon’s truck was mounted to the cab floor. The steps from the wagon and a weight from the scrap box were added to the rear of the frame. Additional structure, like hand rails, roof support posts and other details were added. Then the model was disassembled for paint and lettering.
Short wheels mounting screws were replaced with longer ones which passed through the wheels and counterweights attaching them to the axel. The drive rods, guides and valve gear from the Stainz were mounted to the frame and connected to the counterweight cranks and the cylinders. A Bachmann 10 wheeler coal load was modified to fit the coal bunker, and a tool box and the boiler fill valve were added. A turbo generator is located box under the coal bunker to power the large lights. The sand box is located below the smoke box. When sand is needed an operator stands on the front of the locomotive and spreads the sand on the rails by hand. This project resulted in a good running model that is approximately to scale and effectively conveys the Darjeeling B-Class 0-4-0 ST distinctive appearance.

Great build. Can I ask where you obtained the G Scale plan and dimensions from?

I didn't find plans so I scaled dimensions from photos on the internet. There is a postage stamp with a clean side view which was helpful. My model is not exact scale of a particular locomotive, but it gives the impression of that class of locomotives.

Hopefully this will help me figure out how to build my freelance 2-8-0 from a Piko mogul
