This channel presents virtual visits to the Oyster Creek Garden Railroad (OCRR) and behind the scenes videos providing insight into the many aspects Garden Railroading. Several tourist railroads that inspires the OCRR will be reviewed.
Construction began in 2000 with a railroad station and 14 feet of track. The theme of the railroad was the early 1900's. During the first 10 years of operation, new things kept creeping into the railroad like an invasive plant creeps in a garden, and the theme needed to shift to the 1950's. Over the second ten years, development continued. The railroad's theme was again adjusted to the Oyster Creek Scenic Railroad. A modern day tourist railroad was born.
Frequent meetings with local clubs and even a open house for an NMRA convention made the railroad, in a way, an actual modern day tourist railroad. So, after 20 years of operation the railroad's theme completed a journey from 1900 through 100 years of development to arrive in the 21st century.

Garden Railroad lighting tricks - adding solar security lighting to garden railroad buildings.
I like to run trains at night. The buildings on the Oyster Creek Garden Railroad are illuminated by a 300 watt, 12 volt pool/spa lighting system. 12 volt LEDs intended for garden, or automotive, or spa use provide bright and cheerful lighting. The 12 volt underground ground cable also allows for the addition of LED spotlights and street lamps. Automobiles use an on board 9V battery.
The brewery is my favorite buildings at night.
The buildings are lit for 2 hours after dark. But when the timer shuts off, the railroad disappears - like it no longer exits. Surely some of the buildings would be open all night, or have some security lighting which remained on after hours.
My wife found some interesting rectangular solar LED garden lamps. The solar panels, batteries, and LED were all contained in the rectangular head which is easily removed - and the shape could represent a skylight on the roof of a building - especially one like the brewery with a flat top. The only modification to the building needed is a small hole into the roof for the LED. This makes for very simple installation - or removal and repair or replacement.
This is what the supplemental security lighting looks like when the main lights are switched off.

The original water tank used brass rod tank bands. However, the brass rod bands were to stiff. They didn’t conform well to the tank staves. Also moisture changes, causing the tank to expand or contract, would loosen the bands and they would slip down unevenly no matter how I tried to tension or support them. Ultra Violet light from the sun can degrade plastics. While most G scale track manufacturers use UV inhibitor in their ties, some manufactures ties resist UV delegation better than others. The brass rails are unaffected by the sunlight and broken ties can easily be replaced.

Tea Pot is a MIDWEST Products live steam motor launch kit that was converted to a ferry boat for the Oyster Creek Garden Railroad. It was further modified to readily convert from live steam to electric power operation.

Bridges and water features add character to a garden railroad but they require maintenance. To clean the pond filter I need to remove the bridge spanning the pond to gain access to the submerged equipment. My Ruby is fine steaming one way but in reverse it is terrible. Have you any comments or suggestions please?
There are some excellent videos on UA-cam about adjusting valve timing which may be helpful in getting smother operation from a Ruby.

Fantastic setup! Only change I'd make is putting the top on hinges, maybe with gas struts to help lift and hold it up. And a lock to keep little fingers out :P

Does it have a sight glass? If not, I assume it is designed to run out of gas before running dry on water so there isn't potential to damage the boiler. Also is it hard to make it rc?.
No sight glass. it usually runs out of gas first. When it stops running the first thing I do is close the gas valve just in case.

I agree, it is a good looker. it also runs well and has a fairly long run time. My friend bought it used so we don't know much about it other than it is typical of Accucraft locomotives of that size.

It's a good idea. I own the HLW Railbus and HLW inspection truck that you do and though of adding sound and battery r/c to them. I also own a HLW Mack which I wantt do at least sound to. I don't know if I want to do a separate car for it but I appreciate you showing off your setup. I though to of getting a My Loco Sounds, sound unit.

Great build. Can I ask where you obtained the G Scale plan and dimensions from?
I didn't find plans so I scaled dimensions from photos on the internet. There is a postage stamp with a clean side view which was helpful. My model is not exact scale of a particular locomotive, but it gives the impression of that class of locomotives.

Yes, it is a very basic and somewhat privative engine.

This is an Awesome feature. Very lifelike. The only down side, is Now I’ve got to figure out how to design the same mechanism, but in HO gauge, for My layout. Lmao!. 😂😁👍🏼
Figuring out how to make it work is part of the fun. E bay has small computer fans not much larger than a quarter. Small orange or red LED’s and fine silk fabric should work. If you have a table mounted railroad, the fan can be located under the table so only the fabric and LED’s need to be inside the building. I have been experimenting with ultrasonic misters for smoke generation. They don’t have the capacity for G scale, but may work in HO. Good luck!
