    With Summer rapidly approaching and plenty of nice weather recently, the Pevensey Light Railway, my G Scale Garden Railway has been getting a lot more attention. I decided I wanted a few more freight wagons to run on the layout and I discovered these wonderful slate wagon kits from PDF Models (link below).
    These kits I believe are a mixture of laser cut wood and 3D printed parts and they're priced very reasonably - especially considering that anything for a garden railway tends to be expensive! They're also really simple to build too as you'll see when I take you through this tutorial on building one of the kits later on.
    If you're looking to expand your fleet or are just getting into garden railways, I highly recommend taking a look at PDF Models website: www.pdf-models.co.uk

    It's always nice to see modelers build rolling stock from kits. They always come out a little different than the others I think.They're very nice little wagons. Great video!😃

      I definitely agree! The nice thing here is that each individual wagon is slightly different from the others too, which is exactly how these slate wagons would have been in reality. Thanks for watching 😃

    You know what would be really interesting and cool to see is the use of tipper cars being used to take care of the garden it’s self. What I mean is that filling up the tipper cars with water or other plant support ingredients such as soil, the engines could go around certain areas and you simply to tip over the cars to add material to help the garden. I know it’s kinda random idea and you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to, I just thought it would make having a railway in the garden actually “useful” In a sense if you catch my drift.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      That definitely would be interesting, perhaps I'll have to make up some tipper wagons then... and actually learn something about gardening too! 😂
      I believe Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels did a video a while back about a friend of his who had a ride on railway for doing the gardening. Thanks for watching 👍

    Easy to make and very satisfying when complete I have now made 15 of them so far all sprayed using grey primer and picked out in black where needed. I glued mine with gel superglue for speed. The bath plug chain is a good tip yes more garden railway kits please.

      Awesome, bet that rake of wagons looks great! Even using PVA it doesn't take long, especially when putting them together in bulk. I actually have big plans for the garden railway once I have some more time so watch this space. Thanks for watching 😃

    I’d love to see an update to this video! Maybe more wagons and updates to a more realistic load would be very cool. More garden railway stuff too please! Seeing these pulled behind a live steam loco too would be awesome.

      All being well I'll have some videos of the garden railway to share later in the Summer. At the moment my time is very much focused on getting the 00 layout ready for an exhibition so that is naturally taking priority. There is stuff happening behind the scenes with the PLR though and fingers crossed there could be some very big changes coming in the near(ish) future! Thanks for watching 😃

    They're lovely wagons. I prefer building from scratch because I prefer the building part of the hobby over the operating side. It can be a very cost effective of getting rolling stock with some of mine being built for £5. My garden railway loco is a heavily modified Roundhouse Lady Anne built last year (I might be able to upload some running videos). I would love see you build a locomotive from a kit (or even from scratch) as I find these type of build videos fascinating. Thanks, Robert

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Robert, yeah I think scratch building will always be an important part of the hobby, especially for garden railways. Amazingly these kits aren't that much more expensive though - around £7 a wagon I think and the more you get the cheaper they each are.
      Great to hear about your Roundhouse Lady Anne! I've always fancied building one of the Roundhouse locos but not quite sure I'm up to that level yet. I do have a couple of loco projects in mind though so stayed tuned for those. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @roberthopper1872
      @roberthopper1872 2 роки тому +1

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy I didn't realise that the kits were that cheap! That's better than most 00 wagons! The roundhouse locos are relatively easy to build but you do need a few basic tools and a basic understanding of valve gear timing but as long as you follow the instructions there isn't much to go wrong. I've built 2 already and both have worked really well, especially when you realise that they were built by teenagers. The only draw back is that you could have 10 battery locos for the price of 1 live steam engine

    G scale refers to 45mm gauge representing metre gauge, whereas the kit is 16mm scale, representing 2ft or 2ft 9" (32mm gauge and 45mm respectively). They're still nice kits, I have one of their kits

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому +1

      True, although in practice I've found of all the various larger scales "G" tends to be the most flexible. Here I'm really just using it to mean Garden Railway sized since the entire layout is a mash of lots of different scales in reality. Thanks for watching 😃

    Hi ! I do like the wagons they give off a lifelike feel as on small railways like that the wagons wouldnt be mass produced and more likely to have a few made by the railway ! Great video keep up the good work!

    I really like the loco kits on the PDF Models, it's a shame they don't do O-Guage. It'd be great to have access to some cheap kits like these.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Рік тому

      Yes it is a shame nothing like this exists for O Gauge. I wonder if perhaps the reason is because people would expect more detail/accuracy. With garden railways there seems to be more acceptance if things aren't exactly right/prototypical. Thanks for watching 😃

    I think If you use car wheel weights on the bottom side of the cars. That would help, probably 2 ounces would do. That's what I use on my 3D printed g scale Hudson Tippers.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Yeah that was pretty much my plan Trevor. Just going to see how much some proper loads weigh but I’ll probably go with sticky back wheel weights in the end. Thanks for watching 😃

    Im pretty sure the wheels are mold injected plastic and have been sourced from Binnie Engineering, very nice kit I had a look at one on the makers stand at the Elsecar Garden Railway show and have been meaning to buy a couple.
    Binnie Engineering produce a tipper wagon in 45mm you’d probably like, very cheap little kit.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Рік тому

      Yes that seems right, it was the other smaller parts in the kit that I think are 3D Printed. Still a very nice kit though! Sounds like I'll have to check out the Tipper Wagon too now. Thanks for watching 😃

    Your garden railway has reignited my itch to do G-scale, but it’s the cost. I think I missed the boat, even the price of bogies and motors (ie build my own loco body) have gone up dramatically. Where there’s a will there’s a way, as they say. Glue. Too much glue. For this kind of work, akin to full size cabinetry/joinery, if it is not on the surfaces coming into contact, it is excess. More is not better, even on the contact surfaces themselves. Experiment on scrap, you’ll be amazed how thin a coating of glue is required, and how strong the resulting joint. Glue outside the joint is doing little, to nothing. PVA is not sticky as such, and it isn’t becoming sticky as it dries. We call it adhesive, but it isn’t technically speaking. Think of it as a medium for excluding air. Two highly polished surfaces will stick together. Enough. Looking forward to more G-scale.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Good to hear it's got you interested again but I do agree with you about the cost. It's always been an expensive hobby in my opinion but like I said in the video PDF Models are a breath of fresh air as I do think their kits are quite reasonably priced. Thanks for watching 😃

    The kits look great! I have some similar ones, they really ae lovely models. PDF Models is a great company, I have one of their loco kits. They're not the easiest to make, but if you're up for a challenge I really recommend them. I think with the locos it comes down to skill and talent, two things I don't have in that branch of kit building. One of my friends has made five of them however, and they're stunning models, really well produced, so like I said earlier if you're up for a challenge I do really recommend them.

      That's good to know about their locos. I've been having a look at them and they do seem like quite good kits for the price but I can appreciate that they're probably more intensive than a simple wagon build. Hopefully I'll find the time to build one in the future. Thanks for watching 😃
