100% agree. This movie could have been so much better if not for that ridiculous flashback, wasting talents like Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, Madonna Sebastian, Anurag Kashyap and forced LCU connect. After such a nice first half, it was disaster when the flashback started. Last 20 minutes was the saving grace.
Things I liked 1. Vijay's performance 2. Coffee shop fight 3. Bird eye view fight 4. Anirudh's music (Special mention for I am shit scared OST) Things I didn't like 1. Screenplay of second half 2. Backstory of leo 3. No emotional connection with any character except Vijay's family 4. Wasted potential of Sanjay Dutt, Arjun etc. 5. Forced LCU connection (I didn't feel it was organic) Overall it was between below average and average for me.
Spoilers !!!! When it comes to the 2nd half, the narration became slower due to the flashback and it is understandable as the flashback is necessary for the story. But the flashback was short and chemistry between the Das family isn't properly established unlike the Parthibhan family. One thing I understood is that the flashback was there to make the protagonist realise that the criminal family he was born to didn't even have even an iota of humanity, which he realised when his twin soul sister Elsa (played by Madonna Sebastian) was stabbed to death. So he firmly believed that Leo Das was dead and he had nothing to do with the Das family further. This is how I perceived the 2nd half.
Leo is still better than master, Beast and Varisu.... I felt it was even better than Vikram ..In Vikram 2nd half was too loose... only Agent Tina and to an extend Rolex were the saving grace ...The trouble is people expected the moon and got shot out…It was almost like Dark Night 3 where we expected something bigger than Dark Night 2 but got underwhelmed, even though DN3 was still a good standalone action movie… **Spoilers Ahead** **Leo 2nd half high’s** • The scene between Vijay and Trisha in the 2nd half was so well acted … I am sure any other actor other than Trisha or Vijay would have struggled to pull it off… Vijay acting has improved a lot in the last 10 years…. It is a challenging scene. Showing rejection, anguish, suffering, pain, anger and love in the same scene is pure genius … I don’t know if a younger Vijay would have made it through… • The hyena’s entry in 2nd half was pure mass …well thought out to create the bond with it in 1st half. • Napoleon gun scene • Naa Ready than song… **Leo 2nd half low’s** • The complex relation between Antony, Herold and Leo was not established. In one scene Sanjay is saving Vijay’s family from goons, In another scene he is kidnapping his son. Sanjay’s intention is to take Leo back to his drug industry or to avenge him for destroying his factory. Why does he want Parthiban to accept that he is Leo? What is he going to do after he accepts ? • Why is Herold (Arjun) trying to kill Leo’s family ? Is he trying to take revenge for Leo killing his elder brother Antony ? Would he still try to kill his family if Antony was alive? Does Arjun have some Ego with Vijay…He was the one who killed his sister in the flashback too…. They should have given some scenes in flashback to establish this… • Vijay beating the police was so poorly shot… The action choreography was very 90’s. • More scenes with Elisa and Leo to showcase the brother-sister bond would have helped the audience to feel the pain . Right now there is no emotional connect in her death... • Mansoor Ali Khan doesn’t tell Gautham Menon that the guy in picture is Leo…. That is for a reason…That is not told…even his relationship with Leo was not written well… • Anurag Kashyup killing was so generic…. Some Ego with friend…. This doesn’t sync with Leo’s overall character…. Why does he have to kill for that ? • Very lengthy Climax…The one on one fight with Arjun should have been trimmed. Also Mathew was not shown much in Climax… He should have had some role there… Overall Leo is a 3.5/5 movie…Not bad, not great…Bloody sweet 😊
Leo is a very smartly made movie by Lokesh with detailings. You might have to watch a couple of times to connect the dots. The only flaw I found was weak antagonist but Lokesh himself said Leo is just a character study of Leo/Parthiban. Other theories like how Harold and Das family is connected to Rolex, what is Satya's role as she was referred in Kaithi too etc. might get answered in Kaithi 2. Editing could have been a little crisp but overall the movie was amazing.
I don't understand people talking about slowdown in 2 nd half. People must know movie is not just action. It also involves drama, story and explanation. The movie is great on the whole
It's the opposite. The drama & story were there in 1st half, it was slow yet good. 2nd half was ridiculous. Parthiban had better characterization and role establishment than Leo, Das bros, twin sister, stupid narabali, masala song and buildup fight in checkpost. I'm guessing u r refering to the same movie we all watched.
I didn't bothered much about the back story because the other stuffs kept me engaged and entertained.. thats a big thing for a Vijay's movie.. I usually get bored of Vijay's films in the first 15 mins (mostly) and do not want to proceed fruther but this one was a different ball game because of his great screen presence, acting, singing and dancing in a single movie, great cinematography, great BGM and songs, great editing, great VFX (some shots and hyena were amazing), nice locations, nice editing, nice action sequences (my favorite one was in the cafe, jeep chasing and at the house in the second half when the hyena reenters into the movie)..this movie gave me more than what I wanted..I was shit scared looking at Sandy and Sanjay Dutt's eyes..They were really intimidating..None of the villians in recent times except Varman from Jailer has scared the shit out of me with just their terrifying eyes. These 3 are the ones I would like to stay away from at any given point of time in my life.
'Leo' is the movie where both hero & Villain is in one self. An emotional battle between them. Parthipan always tries to keep leo within himself, but there comes triggers to expel the devil in him. Psychopath & cafe scene, police officer who refuses to give protection and then Harold & Antony das, all are triggers compelling parthipan to expel leo outside. The frustrations at those moments are evident. - It is an anti-hero movie or Villain based movie and the devil is 'Leo' himself. -Parthipan is just a cover up.Whenever someone tries to know about his identity, he gets killed. He is on a killing spree. He replaces his gun shots with right hand. -Triggers. Hears about gunshot in himalaya. Cafe scene-Chocolate coffee. He gets killed instantly. Leo comes out. Asking protection at police station. Frustrated holding on police officer. Market place roaring in frustration at wife. Antony & Harold trying to identity gets killed in no time. Sets traps at home & subramani, same violent as his as friend. He only admits he is leo to only two person, that too before their death. Harold & Antony never tried to kill Leo, they are just superstitious & greedy & wants to bring back parthipan as leo to build their family empire. Whoever tries to reveal his identity gets killed. He is so selfish that, he will go to any extend to keep his parthipan life. And we know, who is the next one calling leo. -Either agent vikram vs leo face off or, vikram might left leo since he is leading family life for last 20 years with a diff identity. He kept eyes on him through his agents. When he understood leo has come out from Parthipan, Vikram either wants him to join his squad or a face off.So definitely, lokesh has given only things needed. Even that 20 min flashback, the last day of leo. It is evident from 'Villain yaaru' song, that the battle is between Parthipan × Leo💯.
Leo is far superior than Jawan. Also Leo is not the typical over the top action film. The style is unique and it's very violent. Lokesh's style of action is spectacular. It's more grounded in comparison. Heroes are not invincible in his movies. In Leo you don't see mass type of entrance to the hero. The storytelling in his movies are top notch, same with Leo. Your assessment is of poor taste as a result of your poor standards.
*It’ll be a spoiler for those who haven’t watched the film yet!!! 1. When Napoleon mentions Dilli’s heroics in Kaithi, we can see that Parthiban (Leo) didn’t react to it. So, it can be a possibility that Leo and Dilli knew each other in past and we can see this connection in Kaithi 2 or Leo 2. 2. When the prisoner (Leo’s friend) narrates the backstory, he specifically mentions that Leo was shot twice on his back, but in the whole film there were no bullet marks. So, it can be possible that the prisoner is narrating the fake story (also seen in Vikram too) and there’s lot in the past of Leo and we can see this in Leo 2. 3. In the epilogue, when Vikram reveals that he knows that Parthiban is Leo and he also mentions that Parthi has recognized Vikram’s voice, we can see that Parthi (Leo) sighs in exasperation. There’s a possibility that they knew each other and Vikram helped Leo in gathering fake documents (as Vikram was a government officer) and Leo promised any help. There are more theories and possibilities but I found these 3 theories. For me the LCU connect was not forced rather we have to watch the film after thoroughly watching Kaithi and Vikram and then try to connect the whole timelines and stories. People who are fans of shared cinematic universes already connected the timelines and events of LCU and there’s a lot in LCU which is to be revealed in upcoming films.
Leo is not a story on a hero vs villains, like Vikram and Kaithi. It's a story on a few smaller villains trying to prey on a bigger monster. We can't call Parthi a hero just because he is living undercover and fights off some other villain gang. He was a drug lord, he was and still is a mass murderer who kills for self interest. So the main villain in the movie is Parthiban/Leo himself. Anbu needed to take drugs before killing even one or two people. Sandhanam needed drug to kill people. Even Rolex needed drug to kill people. But Leo is himself a monster and he doesn't need any drug to casually massacre people without guilt...he is a very dangerous character in LCU. Because he himself says in the climax that he will do whatever he can to suppress his identity. Now Vikram knows his identity. So he should deal with Parthiban the right way, or else Parthiban will have no remorse in going against Vikram. Because Parthi is not fighting for a higher cause or drug free society, he is fighting for his own reasons.
Very true. And, the flashback can't be 100% true. As the narrator was 'high' and lied to the police that it's not Leo. I believe Leo still runs the drug business from Himachal. Why else would he go to Himachal? 😂
@@corporate.hitman I don't think he'll run any drug business now because he has a family and it might be possible that he'll join hands with Vikram. But if we consider your theory, he can start making erythroxylum which was mentioned in Vikram as this chemical is extracted from cocoa beans and Leo owns a cafe and bakery.
The main problem of Leo is Naa ready song instead of song they should have spent time on developing the bond of twins for emotional impact. The whole 14-15 min flashback was very weakly executed. Still don't understand why Lokesh only do this with Vijay films. He made Kaithi with great story but then Master with average story and now after excellent Vikram he did same thing with Leo. I think he should take some time off to do his next LCU movies because fans expect more from him. I also think Anirudh music is also the problem for some sequence in both Vikram and Leo and even in Beast instead of intense and tension building music it's disco pumping music which reuined some scenes for me. The bgm works alone(when hear it without the scene) but not with the mood of the scene and movie. The whole opening Hyena sequence in Leo the music didn't create tension. Like bloody sweet theme without vocals was perfect theme to set the mood in action scenes but he used it only in end.
@@gurkiratsingh79 He want to glorify Kamal. Also he want to downgrade Vijay. Look at the 2nd half he made it dirty. Vijay trusted him in this film, usually Vijay give his interupption to directors. Even his flop movies are one time watchable. Lokesh interupted Anirudh in editing table, he cant do anything. It was as a result of internal politics. Vijay started his next movie, lets hope for best in his next movie. Also i'm waiting for his movie with SRK, Atlee pls make good story.
If Parthi and Leo arent the same person, this movie could've been much better. Because since they are the same person, the emotional scene has become gaslighting scene. The family man's pure struggle to save his family has become fake. Yet the 2nd half flashback and LCU connect was a major drawback. And why leo didnt go and revenge for his sister's death right away? Why putting up a drama saying hes not leo and pretending to stay away yet he knows one day he will be recognised by Das gang? Wtf is this narabali concept? First half was insanely good. Sandy and mysskin should have been throughout the film. Hope Lokesh can redeem himself in the next thalaivar film.
no.. because they are the same person, leo's character has become more interesting.. parthivan desperately trying to not acknowledge his leo side was the best thing of this movie.. the main usp of the movie was how leo was fighting with his self.. its not leo vs the villains.. it was parthivan vs leo all along.. if you watched the movie with an open mind, you would also have love the movie.. but you expected this and that, cameos of rolex and some lcu shit thats why you were dissapointed.. original history of violence was also about inner conflict more than fights, and leo completely justifies that.. but yes the backstory was problematic i agree..
Liked the movie Leo and is worth watching. It's an action thriller and Vijay is at his best in action, dance and acting. I don't agree with this review. Vijay is leading actor of the country and every movie he has something new to entertain the audience. Bgm and songs are good too. I liked Leo and disliked Jawaan. Vijay is a better actor than sharukh in recent times for sure. Vijay is a leading actor of the country now than just in confined to being in south and he is proving his versatility for sure.
I don't know who is forcing you to watch these movies than 😂 if you don't want to watch than don't watch after watching the trailer were you expecting romance on the movie ha 😂 and by the way there are love drama movie released as well go and watch rakshit Shetty recent movie that's a good movie
Its so funny how fans justify the movie is good with their own analogy and twist... Lokesh needs to hear their creative ideas so that he don't disappoint the next time... Anyway the movie is totally a let down...Lokesh should consider dropping Leo from LCU and forget that he made this movie... he also needs to be careful on the actors he choose...he should not cast mass heros
Lokesh failed?? Just watched Leo after listening all those mixed reviews since morning ...yes, it's not the best movie of Lokesh but have to say it's total paisa vasool movie... and it's just a beginning!!! No idea why people compare this movie with Kaithi and Vikram. Both these movies are on a mission and that never shows the past of both the characters, at the same time, LEO is character building Movie to the LCU universe and the movie is all about who LEO/ Parthiban is and how badass they are or how bad ass they are going to be in the LCU universe. I am personally totally satisfied !!! Go watch it from theater's for better cinema experience!!
I watched it yesterday with other people negative reviews .but i enjoyed the movie a lot.some people say thus movies very bad.i dont no how are they said so?
Best lokesh movie yet the fights and theatre experience is fire Nobody even known about 'history of violence' before this movie now everybody is like a professor
Bro don't even compare history of violence with leo.Leo's second half absolutely drops the ball while history of violence is all about the protagonist battle with his violence.
Wtf?, Do you think people didn't have internet before? Or do you think only Loki has watched it and others haven't? We watched HOV during our college days 2014-2015. We are Not young we were born in the 90s.
@@kishores1772 no vikram had so many nonsense characters with several side stories i didnt like the acting in it i wanted to see kamal but got other things so it didnt work for me in kaithi the fights were also the same but in leo there are no side characters only vijay as i wanted to see and the fights were like lokesh wanted to make it action ultimatum it was so good thats why i say its his best work i want to see vijay like this and he delivered it so well
Pretty lame movie when the great build up in the first half is watered down by weak villains in the second half. Not at all convincing or not enough story building for us to be sympathized when Leo's twin is killed. 1:55 - Lokesh tried to cover it up in one scene where Parthiban mentioned he had never seen guns in town. Perhaps he would have thought it didn't need any explanations. 2:02 - Thanks. Now it's evident that even the alleged best do make silly mistakes. Disliking this video Anupama unfortunately. You would have bashed this movie but not sure why you even shy away from bashing this mediocre product. From a humble Tamil viewer worn out by mediocre products.
Thank you for the insightful review. The flashback in the movie felt unnecessary and didn't contribute to the narrative, just like history of violence they should have avoided it. It would have been more engaging to let the audience imagine the backstory, but unfortunately, Lokesh decided to include that flashback for the song. However, I must admit that I found the film to be quite underwhelming. While the first half showed promise, the second half failed to deliver. Additionally, the forced connection to the LCU for fan service was disappointing. All in all, it's safe to say that this is one of the weaker works by LK.
i saw the movie today and found the movie very entertaining.. the main usp of the movie was vijay's struggle with his past self.. this movie was more about inner conflict than some usual lcu stuff... lokesh took a different approach and i am happy for it..
They should have included more story related to das and co and how they operate, seems it was like a short summary of their work in the movie and that's where it fell short... Focusing only on leo at present... Everyone expects a gang classic Neo noir film in lcu not drama that was shown in full length about leos character and how he doesn't want his present to be disturbed, Sanjay dutt and Arjun roles felt like cameos because they were busy fighting and dancing, there wasn't much of story of das and co family... This deserves a part 2 showing darker elements and how they actually operate world wide as a cartel... Leo character is solidly established only in present, but his badass image needs more convincing, I expect Leo's badass story to be atleast half of Rolex
this movie was all about leo's internal turmoil, his struggle with his past self but still he is defeated by his leo personality at the end.. i dont know why people always expect some vikram like stuff from lokesh.. his approach for this movie is completely different

Trisha represents the most essential part of Leo/Parthi’s life - Family. I don’t know why nowadays public has the opinion that having a love story in a film or a love track in a film is a bad idea because it adds so much strength and so much depth to the main character. A good actress or an actor paired with the protagonists with some good writing will definitely be an asset to the story. Having one well developed antagonist instead of 2 highly underdeveloped antagonist with a poor cameo from Anurag, with some confused writing in 2nd half was detrimental and dragged the movie.
@@cozwhynot2day The characters of arjun and sanjay seem actually good on paper...i think when trisha's part got extended it just didn't give the movie enough time to show them properly...coz we have already empathized with parthi and his family in first half showing more of them in second seemed a bit unnecessary
@@jalakamkiran7392 IMO editing down the first cafe fight scene, removing the car chase scene, few songs and instead developing the ‘Das family’ characters with clarity could’ve been better (probably).
Anupama, Leo is wayy better than Jawan. You just want a SRK's movie to fare better than a South Indian movie. BIAS REVIEW. Please just stick to reviewing your north indian movies. I like the violence in this movie. Excellent cinematography, directing, storytelling, music, acting. This is a Hero centric movie. Its pure entertainment that defies logic. Just the way we like it over here. Nobody wants a logical Vijay movie. If I want logic, I'll go and read my Client's agreements.
Far better than YRFs spy universe and Rohit Shetty's COP universe... 🤩🤩🤩 When you have a story intact to the universe you simply don't need the Cameo of other stars from the universe...🥰
Then how it become a universe?! Movie is an art where things are shown rather tell. So if a director want a movie as a part of a universe, its better to show it by adding characters from other movies !!! TBH, YRF spy universe has more chance because they can have multiple directors. They can extend to other languages too. Lokesh has limits if he is the leader of the universe. I don’t even start with COP universe. Its just non sense.
Yes Innovators dont give everything in one Shot ...Leo is not up to expectation of critics and I understand ...But Base and fundamentals are important just like Marvel !! They did many movies in between that was not relevant but became relevant later in end game !!

Lol in leo's 2nd half Vijay is fighting like a superman😂😂.Flying kicks, killing more than 20 people using only knife and a pistol.Only 1st half fight scenes in leo were grounded. But I do agree that leo is better than jawan which is nothing but a typical Indian mass masala film with over the top action sequences and bad storyline.
@@gouthamkrishnan6718 In Marvel films, a man kills hundreds of people. You still didn't complain. In RRR and bahubali, heroes took on an army single handedly. Yet you didn't complain. But you have problem with Leo. Your hypocrisy got exposed. Leo have both grounded action and over the top action. Which makes it even better in my opinion.

@@gouthamkrishnan6718 I know where you are coming from. Well Leo had grounded fights and over the top fights. Having an expectation of one style is a mistake from the Audience side. If you keep expecting the same thing in every movie, then the movies will turn out to be repetitive. And for me the over the top sequence in second half enhanced the movie experience because from the beginning of the movie, the plot was hyping up Leo as someone extremely dangerous. We already saw Parthiban taking out goons swiftly. So if we want the reveal of Leo to be grand, then it should be something Parthiban didn't do. Which is the over the top fight sequences that hyped up Leo even more. Someone who is ruthless, fearless, and powerful. Over the top fight sequences would elevate the character more. I would say they could have handled over the top scenes a little better but those sequences enhanced the movie experience for me.

the movie is an average fare, with no character worth remembering. even the score of Anirudh is underwhelming. the second half did the movie in. weakest villains made this movie a one time watch.
As usual an awful review where it clearly shows Anupama trying hard to give a good review to an awful film with often repeated actions scenes and nothing new.
Most of those who have watched the movie, have found the 1st half to be good/extremely good and the 2nd half to be poor to average.. For me, the 1st half itself was just ok.. Though I did enjoy a few good scenes in the movie, on the whole, I didn't find myself get engaged in the proceedings.. The wait to know whether Parthiban is Leo or not became a sort of torture over a period of time. Overall a highly mediocre and underwhelming movie. ..
Parthiban himself says that he has done many very terrible, heinous crimes in his past as Leo...and that's why he wants to forget that he was Leo, anyone who knows his true identity is already dead or will die immediately by his hand....what crimes did he commit in his past that he doesn't want being discovered by anyone....plus Vikram knows his real identity, what's their relation...friends, allies, enemies
Easily the weakest Lokesh movie. Hell, even Master's second half was much better. Also, Anirudh's over reliance on edm for the fight bgms was weird especially after seeing how he scored banger after banger this entire year. Both villains were wasted, especially considering this was one of Arjun's movie after such a long time. The only saving grace was Vijay's acting which was very unique. Just want Kaithi 2 to be very much like Kaithi or Vikram. Also, Lokesh should avoid flashbacks like he did with Master, Kaithi and Vikram, the mystery of the character is much better than a stupid flashback like the one we saw in Leo.
Do you agree with this review?
Honest review unlike those so-called reviewers bashing it right, left and middle .
Things I liked
1. Vijay's performance
2. Coffee shop fight
3. Bird eye view fight
4. Anirudh's music (Special mention for I am shit scared OST)
Things I didn't like
1. Screenplay of second half
2. Backstory of leo
3. No emotional connection with any character except Vijay's family
4. Wasted potential of Sanjay Dutt, Arjun etc.
5. Forced LCU connection (I didn't feel it was organic)
Overall it was between below average and average for me.
This is bizarre shit. Leo has no story at all. These people review is as random as leo screenplay😅
Why the heck promoting other films in this video

Perfect 💯

• Vijay beating the police was so poorly shot… The action choreography was very 90’s.
• More scenes with Elisa and Leo to showcase the brother-sister bond would have helped the audience to feel the pain . Right now there is no emotional connect in her death...
• Mansoor Ali Khan doesn’t tell Gautham Menon that the guy in picture is Leo…. That is for a reason…That is not told…even his relationship with Leo was not written well…
• Anurag Kashyup killing was so generic…. Some Ego with friend…. This doesn’t sync with Leo’s overall character…. Why does he have to kill for that ?
• Very lengthy Climax…The one on one fight with Arjun should have been trimmed. Also Mathew was not shown much in Climax… He should have had some role there…
Overall Leo is a 3.5/5 movie…Not bad, not great…Bloody sweet 😊
beast and varisu are utter trash lol
@@visweshbaskaran3169 I agree
-
It is an anti-hero movie or Villain based movie and the devil is 'Leo' himself.
It is evident from 'Villain yaaru' song, that the battle is between Parthipan × Leo💯.
the way leo introduce in second half was quit common , i was expecting hig level but overall its 4 out of 5❤
LEO 2 my friend
Lokesh maybe setting LEO DAS as main villain. Since usually villains are powerful and LEO DAS is shown as goddamn powerful.
Watch leo once again,. Leo is a experience a top notch insian movie, where no emotions were forced.
Despite its shortcoming . Leo is absolute banger
Please invite Lokesh and Thalapathy Vijay , I haven’t lost the hope ! 😊🙏❤️
U missed the whole point of the movie
Liked the movie Leo and is worth watching. It's an action thriller and Vijay is at his best in action, dance and acting. I don't agree with this review. Vijay is leading actor of the country and every movie he has something new to entertain the audience. Bgm and songs are good too. I liked Leo and disliked Jawaan. Vijay is a better actor than sharukh in recent times for sure. Vijay is a leading actor of the country now than just in confined to being in south and he is proving his versatility for sure.
I agree with you. I'm also getting action fatigue. We need a break from action movies. Some old school romance, comedy, family drama.

But everyone including Anupama madam were silent on jawan which is completely filled with action

Average screenplay on the second half.
I can't wait for Leo 2!!!!

Far better than YRFs spy universe and Rohit Shetty's COP universe... 🤩🤩🤩
When you have a story intact to the universe you simply don't need the Cameo of other stars from the universe...🥰
