- How many items can you store in a 1x1 space? You can start with a chest, and fill it wish shulker boxes, and even replace one of those shulkers for an ender chest with even more shulkers in it... but is that as good as you can do? This would be an awesome use as a buffer system for a industrial Mega Smelter! :D
I guess it could also be improved with some automatic indexing system that automatically pick out any unique stackable items & put it in an index storage (the barrels) if it is missing (& removes any non-stackable items), but I don't know how to do that.
And it would add a LOT of complexity to the build (not suitable for this tutorial).
I thought you did all video related things by yourself...
What is next? Someone helps you with counting??

happy to give you some new ideas :)
So, I designed a pretty similar design a while ago, but it's not great for survival. What happens is the hoppers tend to put one item in each minecart chest, which is great for storing large quantities of one item, but not for a big diversity of items. Because of this, it really doesn't work in a main storage situation. Also, if the storage gets full (which happens a lot considering it puts one item in each chest) you can't make it go into a miscellaneous storage, because the more chest minecarts you add, the more time it takes for the hoppers to put the items into a chest.
there is some diminishing returns which is why I said this was mostly a solution for micro-base designs and not a primary storage solution.
If only I had need for this much storage space, like if there was a youtuber who made such efficient yet simple minecraft farms.

Cool vid & nice idea. I saw someone else ask the same question "how many items you can store in 1 block" but they didn't give a reasonable way of taking stuff out. :p
that is an important part of the puzzle... or else what good is that storage :)

This is actually one of the most clever storage ideas I have seen for Minecraft. Like it is so polished and well constructed. If I weren't already subscribed this definitely would have done it. Great job; I will be very happy to use this in my builds now (after building an iron farm, of course :) ).

my god this is gonna be SO useful for my quarries. i typically dont go mining, i just dig out giant quarries at y:5 and end up with way more cobble than i can deal with, which means im always tripping over chests or just throwing all my cobble away. this is a FANTASTIC way to be able to keep it all without it becoming a hassle

At first I was thinking "well it doesn't seem very efficient to have to place the item in and wait for it," but I realized this completely takes out the need for a sorting system or running back and forth between endless amounts of chests. That has always been a downer for me so this is quite a refreshing approach to storage, I'm going to give it a try!

This is so cool! Is there a way you can take out a large quantity of items? Maybe time it so when one hopper mine cart fills up another one come in its place?
not easily... you could move things around to get two hopper minecarts under there (more even) but he more you try the larger and more complex it will get
@@EagleEye621 you can definitely get 8x hopper speed output. Idk about more tho, as 8x speed is the most a single hoppercart can do.
Excellent for bulk storage. Put this after your filters have separated nonstackables from your farms. No more walls of double chests.
yes... the main limiting factor is the 4-hopper-load-speed since you really should keep the vine there to help with lag

Made this type of system to move items from my base while moving bases. Chest carts are moveable, so I had like 20 on a flying machine.

I'm curious as what the performance client and server side is like. Client Side just regular double chests can very taxing since they are processed as entities. Here, I'm wondering if it's significantly worse than the equivalent number of chests. This also has the benefit of a cheap sorting system.
probably much worse... that is why I don't recommend this a general storage, but just as compressed storage if you are trying to make a tiny base.

I thought of this idea with two of your videos combined for a good 1.17 XP farm... I don't know if it would work well but this is the idea, you combine your automatic cobblestone farm with a carpet duper and you can smell Unlimited cobblestone to make unlimited XP. Would that work?

This is really smart!
clever, but it'd be a lot more practical in survival if you could automate the selection process. You could automate selecting a single type of item into a hopper minecart that is used as a filter, send that cart under the chest cart pile, then keep another minecart hopper under that one that you actually take out of.
clever... would be much larger, but also more practical as you mention.

How do you address the possible entity deletion of those minecart chests on servers and such? This problem is what made me not go this route sooner. If you addressed this in your video, just tell me and I'll go back later when I'm not as busy. :) (I didn't watch the entire video, sorry)
how do I address a server admin deleting the minecart-chests... I didn't... not really sure there is anything you can do about that besides not use the design at all. The vine should reduce some of the lag, but if you stack enough in there the admin might just come knocking... RIP ... :/
@@EagleEye621 Wasn't talking about a server admin necessarily. I'm sure you know what weird stuff can occur when something like paper, spigot, or fabric is added.

I've found if you put to much minecarts your game really starts to lag because of all the entities

similar concept go back I think to seth bling many years ago, but doing my best to take the concept an compact it as much as possible
You can fit an infinite amount of items i one single chest. You didn't mention if it have to be done in survival mode but if not, you can put shulker boxes in chest, then copy it with NBT data and stacks of chests like this to shulkers and so one. Warning if u would do it on server it will kick you for sending too many data, same as with book ban.
not exactly survival friendly :P

I'm sorry but I didn't understand why you used trapped chest on top of the hopper instead of a regular one
when you open a trap chest it causes a redstone signal, which locks the hopper under it. That means that while you have the chest open the items won't drain into the hopper (as they would if you used a regular chest). Since they don't drain, if you accidently misclick and put something in the chest you don't want going into the storage system (like armor) you have time to take it out.
