Just saw Joe and the rest of the band in Austin last night. Joe had the line of the night: “it was more fun being 20 in the 70s than 70 in the 20s.” What a performance!
More fun then for so many reasons. It's hard to find any entertainment these days that isn't there for some other reason than just plain old entertainment. Put more than 5 people together and the guy with a mic starts preaching, often incoherently.
My 21 yr. old son saw you at Guitar Center in Scottsdale about three years ago. Not being shy, he went up and talked to you. And, you talked back! He asked you about writing Rocky Mountain Way and you gave him some insight on it. Three weeks later we saw you in Nashville and a few months after that we saw you in Vegas at the epic Hotel California concert! My son has a story he will be telling the rest of his life. Thanks for that!

I seem to recall Don telling the story that as they are playing the solo, he notices that Joe still had some white powder on his nose and laughs and tells him.
Probably you are not aware that it was Felder who composed almost all of the Song's Guitar play including Solo (same thing in their Hell Freezes over version of this song). And it was Felder who favored and saved Joe in the band which was one of the reasons (not the major one though) why Band eventually broke up
The Eagles were the primary backdrop music for my wife and my's early courtship. 30 years later their music still takes us back to the early stages of a romance that will last forever....
The real story is that Felder created the most memorable guitar intro to the most memorable song on their most memorable album.....and Henly and Fry trreated him like nothing more than a session musician. Walsh is incredibly talented and has earned his accolades, but " Hotel California " will always be Felders greatest contribution to classic rock history.
Yep. The real reason the Eagles broke up is that Henley & Frey could never forgive Felder for writing their all-time best song. And he *did* write it; it's not just the intro, it's the verses as well, not to mention the ending solos, although I'm sure the chords were changed slightly here and there. The rest of the band contributed to the finished piece, of course, but it was Felder's baby. Henley & Frey's egos never got over it.
and that is the crux of why Henley gets annoyed when Felder's name comes up. Besides losing the lawsuit. Many consider the song to be the definitive Eagles song and neither Henley nor Fry can lay claim to creating the masterpiece

I have always thought that Joe Walsh was an amazing creative artist, and a hell of a guitarist, never realized how well spoken he was until watching this. Thank you
He is amazing with some amazing stories. Some tragic, like the loss of his daughter, and some unexpected, like his love of and desire to protect, Santa Cruz Island. And then there's the antics on the road.
well he kind of soft-pedaled the meaning of Hotel California. There are definitely darker themes present in the song, referencing sin, satanism and sacrifice.
That double guitar solo was destined to put a whole new twist on the rock guitar ecosystem. But the curious thing is that to this day it has never been topped. One of those truly unique and magical moments in the history of Music.

Hotel California is to this day the song | call the best produced song ever. Layers upon layers of musical perfection. I'm not even a big Eagles fan, I do respect them but I'm not a groupie. But Hotel California just sounds out of this world. Respect to everyone who took part in putting this masterpiece together. Will listen to it over and over, forever.
I'm not an Eagles fan at all but this song is astounding. Somehow it has the feel of an effortless jam whilst at the same time every note/beat/vocal sound is precision. It's a masterpiece of understatement and that's something many bands never master, or never master together at the same time.
@@randomhumanoidblob4506 Im a massive Eagles fan so i am slightly biased lol but i love seeing reaction videos to this song and knowing which parts they are going to comment about. Every single piece of this songs satisfies the musical needs between lyrics and instumentation.
@Sam Juneau It's not in my usual oeuvre - I listen to much harder, harsher stuff and electronica right on the hard cutting edge. But every now and then something transcends genres and rises above, and this is almost the epitome of that ascension. What I love about it is that they didn't overblow anything. All it would take is one ott vocal line :(god, I hate yowling vocalists who have to make everything complicated. My pet peeve!) or any one of the guitar lines tipping into indulgence as was common at the time and it would be ruined. The balance is just immaculate. And on top of that there's the ambivalence; the listener interprets. Of course music is subjective, but for me this is one of those rare songs that is immortal - it reflects its time but isn't constrained by it. Absolutely extraordinary. And get me, being all deep n meaningful - usually I'm just headbanging away ;-)

I’ve listened to the Eagles just about my whole life and Joe explains the meaning behind hotel California better than any other member. Nice Joe , you Rule!
I've been reading articles with Joe Walsh interviews since the early 90s when I was learning to play guitar and his story has changed so much since then. Back then, it was "all Felder" as he would say before and he would say don't listen to Frey's and Henley's story as Felder was the one who made the whole song except the lyrics. It's really changed a lot since then and much has to do with him not wanting to hurt a steady paycheck with the Eagles and future upcoming tours.

I grew up on this music not because it was my generation but because it was my dad's. He would always blast his music on the record player with the 4 15" speakers. I remember being little and listening to him play his music as he got ready for work. I would be moving my feet to the music while half asleep. I own records of these bands and blast my music for my children. Great music is always remembered.
The original version features a traditional 12 string. Like to imagine that Don got that double neck in order to avoid having to saddle Glenn Frey with the responsibility for picking out that part.
@@Shred_The_Weapon there was pictures of him playing that full bowl Ovation in the sessions in the middle section of the book...Hammer of the Gods...of Jones in that session...

Hi Joe, I just really enjoyed that quick history lesson. I have a 6yo son and I mostly play him music from Check Berry on... While cooking Sunday breakfast and listening to music, Hotel California came on. My son suddenly cranks it up and says Dad I like this song, then he went silent. He was quiet the whole time totally tuned in focused on nothing but the song. Hotel California is a fine composition in many ways and still captivates listeners of all ages decades later. Thank you for your great talent that will always shine on as long as the human race exists. ❤️
I was able to get a great seat close to the stage when the Eagles were on their Hell Freezes over Tour. I was seated about 30 or 35 feet from Joe Walsh's stage amp. Joe and Don Felder's playing guitar parts were flawless. They did not play too loud, the stage volume was perfect. Absolutely great harmonies and well worth the ticket price. A great experience.
Similarly, I got a change to sit second row when Don Felder began is solo performance career and I was so taken with the way that Felder plays all these wicked riffs but as if he's massaging the guitar with such finesse. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to see the Felder/Walsh pairing live.
Ruby I don't know your age but Joe can barely put two sentences together..just like David Hunn said is totally correct. If it wasn't for Fry and Azoff and some others that have tried to help him Walsh would probably have been done..as in Life. Joe is a great player and I love his playing.
Just hearing them today still gives me happy feelings that almost make me an Old man Crying for a return to WHEN EVERYBODY Loved Each Other....FOR REAL. I'm 76, and the EAGLES are still calling all of us to HOTEL CALIFORNIA. We only go around Once in Life. It's short. So Smile and Enjoy it.
I'm 67. There are way too many outstanding performers, and songs, to pick one. Personally, I can find favorites to fit any mood I am in. Sometimes the group was responsible for a "one hit wonders" album entry, but the song is still memorable.
I saw the Eagles for the first of 4 times in 1974 and the ticket was $7.95 and I still have that ticket stub....great back then and great today. RIP to the recent lost band members
Hotel California is the unofficial National Anthem of Thailand! I’ve been there 10 times over the past 35 years and you’ll still hear it being played and performed by solo performers and rock bands in clubs, including high school bands etc. I saw a rock band composed of teenagers at a street festival do a great cover of it. I’m just amazed at how much the Thais really love this song. Last time I was there was in 2019, just before the Pandemic, and I heard it many times while there.
@@Eugene_Sucks Some do. I guess they love the sound of it. The lyrics don’t make much sense even to Native English speakers. Fans have been trying to decipher the lyrics for decades. Each person has their own ideas about what the lyrics mean. The Rev. The Rev. Jerry Falwell interpreted it to be all about Satanism. The Eagles themselves described the song as their interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles. In 2013 Don Henley said the song was about “A journey from innocence to experience… that’s all.”
Tbh i think my babys way more interested in her cartoons bc theyre a bit more interactive & relative to her. Also im not playing this around her. Song still seems creepy. Im just skimming the comments for the meaning
The 1970's, a time of the most creative original music to ever come out, never repeated, nor will we ever see a group with as much root talent as the Eagles again.
No I think you will find that the 80's just may have you there! But the 70's and 90's were of course very good. The 70's were a major transition from the sixties, and the 90's were a major transition from the 80's. But the 80's were a class all of their own! There will never be another time like the 80's, and so with their amazing plethora of musical talent. BRING BACK THE 80's :P
@@T.R.U.T.H.. All nostalgia influenced, really. I was raised on 50s and 60s. (My folks were old when they had me...so in the early days The Platters, Buddy Holly, and Roy Orbison was my jam. Billy Stewart too.) Then became a Beatles obsessive (still am.) Turned onto classic 70s by a girl I liked in high school. (Zeppelin, baby.) And later, in college developed a taste for cocaine and 80s music...no correlation, I'm sure.) But the 90s are special in a way that only the music of your own generation can be. I love the Beatles, Floyd, Zeppelin, Orbison, Holly, Chuck Berry...all of it, still. But it isn't my generation. It can take me back to where I was, but unless I find another weirdo outcast, it doesn't take me with anyone else. But Foo Fighters, Butthole Surfers, Oasis, that cute hipster chick with the glasses, and Blur...Hoottie, for christ's sake. All 90s kids know Hootie (I lived in South Carolina at the time, Charleston, and my old man worked at a bar they would come up from Savannah and play. And he introduced me to Hootie one night when I was with him for the weekend. (I been hanging out in bars since I was in diapers 😆. Different time.) There is just so many memories all born out of 90s music. It has to take the lead for me. But to each their own. My first concert though...Ray Charles. Ultimately I suppose it is impossible to award any decade as being the best. 20th Century beats all. I'll take Al Jolson over most contemporary music. 😆
Instead, we just get people acting like religious fanatics, trying to duplicate their recordings. I’ve been spending most of my adult life waiting for a wave of musicians that want to live up to what groups like the Eagles gave to music - instead of trying to get stuck in their record sleeves.
I LOVE JOE WALSH! I love his songs, how he talks, how he sings and plays guitar. I also love how in the early days, he sang with his eyes closed. What a great musician, and representor of the era.
Fascinating explanation on the creation of this iconic tune, and the generation as a whole. The first time I saw the video I was blown away that Joe was playing his part of the lead on a Telecaster. That bare bones, no frills instrument in the hands of a master keeping pace with Felder’s SG is phenomenal.
I just love Joe Walsh, such a fantastic musician. There’s nothing better than listening to him rip. He’s such an intelligent man glad he turned his life around.
I grew up in Southern California. Born in '59, I was too young for Woodstock but knew the tunes and the climate musically from the '60's. The early '70's was a continuation of the '60's but more of the excess and lifestyle. The Eagles would have never been without Linda Ronstadt. But we didn't know that until 40+ yrs later. They were just there like the California sunshine... always on the air... KLOS, KMET... I guess I never knew just how big and influential they were until sometime late in 1980 when I found myself in Holland on a Mormon mission. I was spending the night away from where I was living (in Den Helder) at a row house in Alkmaar. I couldn't sleep very well, and it was very, very late. I was still adjusting to being so far away from everything I knew when... through the walls from next door, I heard the muffled sounds of Hotel California! The whole album!! It was great, really. I suppose I had a notion people there knew "our" music. But in those days, the California scene and the music that came out of it wasn't as ubiquitous then as now. The New Wave sound out of England ( think The Police etc) was more typical. So like music to my ears (pun intended!) I listened joyfully to The Eagles that night in Alkmaar Holland! I guess, even after many years in The Netherlands and travel to England, Poland and as far east as Belarus... it still amazes me that their sound, their music has had such an influence on the whole world. If you want to see the hotel pictured on the album cover, you'd have to go to Beverly Hills CA and visit The Beverly Hills Hotel just off Sunset Boulevard and Beverly Drive. Sort of a weird intersection. But I agree with Joe here. The whole State was the hotel the song is about. People moved to California from ALL OVER. By the end of the decade and into the '80's, people were sporting bumper stickers that said, "Welcome to California. Now go home!" I sometimes wish they'd gone too. Such a mess now. I've been in Utah over 30 yrs now. But it was a beautiful time to be alive and young in LA once upon a time... echt waar!
That was a nicely put together little story, I liked it. Good to see we can actually get some good truths from the comments section, as opposed to some fake-ass videos out there!
Joe Walsh has had his share of challenges that came along with the fame and fortune. His skill at diplomacy, stemming from his inherent good nature and kind heartedness kept him afloat where others foundered. That along with his creative accomplishments adds to his eminent stature. He'll always stand tall.

Got on an elevator In Vegas and Joe was on it. Nobody knew it was him except me and he knew I knew who he was. I was shaking from excitement with the biggest smile on my face. Nobody was looking at the big rock star, they were looking at me loosing my mind and trying to keep it together. He just stood there all cool and got off the elevator like a regular dude. As soon as the doors closed I screamed " OH MY FUCKING GOD THAT WAS JOE FUCKING WALSH" Nobody understood what just happened to them. Amazing. Everyone e just wanted to get as far away from me as possible because I was losing my mind. It took every bit of self control I had not to say anything to him, but he knew I knew and he just stared at me , like "Be cool dude, don't lose yer shit in an elevator" closest to a rock GOD I have ever been to. Same freaking elevator in Vegas.

Oh, Joe Walsh. You guys will be remembered! The first time I heard the "dueling guitar" riff at the end of H.C., with the studio fade ending, I was thinking "this is impossible, I've never heard such a riot of music . . . this is impossible stuff!" I have loved it ever since, and I never tire of hearing it. I saw you guys at Stagecoach several years ago (the warm up act was John Fogerty!) . . . Oh, what a night! As I recall, the last song was Desperado, which is another Eagle anthem, worlds apart from Hotel California.

Joe Walsh, you and the Eagles did all you hoped for and so much more!! You guys will go down in rock history as one of the greatest bands of all-time and deservedly so!! When it comes to rock guitarist Mr. Walsh, you don't have to take a back seat to anyone!
I listened to both multiple albums by the Eagles and Van Halen and Van Halen's catalog, for the most part, sucked. The Eagles had a large array of slower songs like In the City and The Sad Cafe, and brighter songs, like per say Heartache tonight or seven bridge road. They also had harder rock songs such as Life in the fast lane and Victim of love. I can't even begin to explain how little variety Van Halen has as well as execution in his music.
I was in the U.S. Army in Germany in the 1970's and Hotel California was our anthem. When we were in the field we had a Battalion beer hall where in the evening we could go drink beer and play cards and relax. The Battalion Sgt Major had a jukebox and we could listen to records. He got so tired of hearing Hotel California he took it out of the jukebox. Holy Cow!!! He just about had a riot on his hands. Eventually he put it back in but play was limited to two times a night. Great memories of serving with great people. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
You succeeded. That song, its perhaps unintentional depth, the musicianship, its intro, that Felder/Walsh interplay after Henley's vocals all contributed to its timelessness. Perhaps the greatest American song.
Story goes Henley wanted Felder's original version of the finale, which was at home in a box of tapes he had recorded. Called home and had friend play over the phone...and that's the one they used.

Very interesting comments thanks guys, I'm just grateful for the music and the memories the likes of these gentlemen will never come again AMEN.🤘❤
and that is the crux of why Henley gets annoyed when Felder's name comes up. Besides losing the lawsuit. Many consider the song to be the definitive Eagles song and neither Henley nor Fry can lay claim to creating the masterpiece
Absolutely correct !
Fry was an a-hole
Joe's goofy smile and expressions during the solo always crack me up. A great song, right up there with Stairway to Heaven.

@Sam Juneau
It's not in my usual oeuvre - I listen to much harder, harsher stuff and electronica right on the hard cutting edge.

All nostalgia influenced, really.
I was raised on 50s and 60s.
(My folks were old when they had me...so in the early days The Platters, Buddy Holly, and Roy Orbison was my jam. Billy Stewart too.) Then became a Beatles obsessive (still am.)
Turned onto classic 70s by a girl I liked in high school. (Zeppelin, baby.)
And later, in college developed a taste for cocaine and 80s music...no correlation, I'm sure.)
But the 90s are special in a way that only the music of your own generation can be.
Different time.)
There is just so many memories all born out of 90s music.
An all time classic...that intro 🎶 hooks me then reels me in every time, just perfect 👌
Best decade for music hands down.
Fascinating explanation on the creation of this iconic tune, and the generation as a whole. The first time I saw the video I was blown away that Joe was playing his part of the lead on a Telecaster. But it was a beautiful time to be alive and young in LA once upon a time... echt waar!
Goed verhaal. Thanks for telling a good story.
That was a nicely put together little story, I liked it. Good to see we can actually get some good truths from the comments section, as opposed to some fake-ass videos out there!

I went to a Eagles concert around 05 one of the best concerts i ever been to the vibe in the stadium people of all ages and walks of life the entire stadium singing along. Watched Joe pick up a guitar and do a complete setup on it on youtube was inspiring

Joe will always be the greatest rock guitarist of them all. Every note he played was important to the song. No horsey squeals, no tapping, no waste. Just the best.
When Don Felder and Joe were together teh Eagles were at their very best.

Joe, I want to thank you,,and the Eagles for this song. I was in rehab,at the end of my treatment, another and my self started the day with writing a line from that song. That was early November of 1991, at Edwin Shaw,in Akron, and have been sober ever since. That line, "you can checkout anytime, BUT YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE" fits to a tee, my drinking addiction. Thank you We miss you. I must admit, the Draughthouse, James Gang, Glass Harp, and the Counterpoints, were fun,of what I can recall LOL.

@@joewalsh275 Thanks again, as long I have a brain cell, I'll remember those days. They were "The best of Times, and the worse of times", but Akron,Cleveland. Kent, and Canton, had the best live music. Oh forgot Youngstown with Glass Harp, and Left End. Take care, and thanks again.
Wow I thought this was just about addiction
TIMELESS MASTERPIECE!! 💖
I had the opportunity to attend a concert as a young teenager in 1977 to see the the Hotel Calif tour. Precious moment kept in my heart. I can still recall the feeling, crowd, songs , scent of a warm summer night and that people were happy
I always thought the song was about vices and addiction. Always loved Joe’s guitar abilities and comments!

Thanks for your love and support ♥️
Love Joe! Makes you even happier to be an Eagles fan.
You can see that even though Felder and Walsh are having fun they are both looking hard at what the other is doing to make sure they are in tune and in time with each other. I guess we shall never know how much of the song Felder wrote and how much was down to Frey and Henley - doesn’t really matter, it is one of the all time great songs.

Felder wrote the music and guitar parts. Henley wrote the lyrics and melody.
The Eagles🦅💖🕺👬🧑🤝🧑🌟🤩
Great!🎼🎵🎹🎸🎤📀🎥👍👏
From Hong Kong🙋♀️🌏💝🌺🥰
Thanks for your love and support ♥️
Joe is awesome, shouldn't really be with us anymore after all the stuff he did, even if you don't like The Eagles....you got to like Joe !!
Keith Richards
Yeah...I have the first 3 James Gang albums, and a couple of Joe's other band Barnstorm records: Barnstorm, So What and The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get. Good shit.

This song is timeless and i still listen to it nonstop. music has so much soul and power.
Joe was so humble and happy when he and The Eagles performed in our town a few years back. He was so happy, he went up to the mic and said “Woogah Woogah!” or something like that. Free as a bird with a gentle soul.

@@joewalsh275 Thank You!
@@joewalsh275 Hello, thank you so much for the reply. The concert was in Honolulu, Hawaii and you sounded amazing.
Words can not describe how much I love the Eagles ❤❤
I think there's much more to this song than he speaks about here.
Yep ripped off from Jethro Tull

The photo is of a mental hospital between Malibu and Oxnard, Calif. You can check in but you can't check out.

My driving instructor used it as a destination for his students.
Incidentally, and kind of ironically, I believe they turned the property into a state college.
They used the melody of the Tull song and wrote H.C. Zeppelin’s done it also thank God
Certainly one of the most iconic rock songs ever written and one that I, and I'm sure many others, can still remember the first time they heard it, all those years ago.
THE best guitar duet in rock history
Did Joe mention Don Felder? No.
I know 1 that is better. Only 1.
@@dailydoseofblues7708 which is?

Best shit in history. This was 1966. Far before like anything. Even pre clapton. Anything that came after this is inspired by it but its sad to see this song doesn't get the recognition it disserves.
Whole song is literally a acid trip
The Hotel California video is the first time I saw you, Joe, and I fell in love with you immediately! Something about that rocker with the red bandana!! I was immediately smitten and still am in 2024! 💞
one of if not the best bands on the planet
Don Henley is a legend. his voice. omg I have not born when the time of release this song. but still i listen this song hotel california every day...
I respect him and his humble and honest temperament.
Two others in this band I find greedy, self centred and egotistical.
But together they had “it”. And ya goto respect that.

We rode the bus 15 miles to school every day. Some brilliant "consolidation" idea. Took about 35 minutes. We had the hippest bus driver, who had the "latest" in 8-track technology! Heh. Speakers in all 4 corners of the bus. We listened to The Eagles almost every day going to school. We were the only bus who had that going on, and we thought it was the coolest thing.
He was actually a country fan, but The Eagles were something he liked and the kids liked.
I still think making kids ride a bus for 35-40 minutes every day before and after school was pretty messed-up, but we made the best of it.

"I go to parties sometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door
It's tough to handle this fortune and fame
Everybody's so different, I haven't changed"
Indeed! The was one perfect album..an amazing song in an amazing time!

No auto tune back then just talent !!
True.
Stop being an ignorant cliche.
What is auto tune? I hear people talking about it.

Joe, I think your memory is solid. Thanks for your contribution to rock history.
one of the greatest bands ever........EVER
Walsh: "We want to be remembered as doing a body of work
that represents the time that we lived in."
PERFECT!
