Jesus Christ is about a person, the one true God, who came down in a virgin birth, and he can relate with us because he had all the same struggles that we did was born holy spirit it was actually the family his brothers and sisters were stepbrothers and sisters because he was not my man, he was rejected by some of his own family he was spit on humiliated belittled all the same things that we experienced here on this broken world came and died on the cross the most brutal of all things after being whipped after the death punch a bag over his head punched in the face, pulled some of his beard out his hair out cross was one of the most brutal that you could have it would put big nails through your tunnel where all the nerves were put in your feet so you wouldn’t suffocate every time you wanted a breath you had to yourself sometimes you would hang there for two or three days before you die very brutal our God suffered for us he was buried on the third day. I crashed my car to this when I was 21. For a long time after the accident I thought this song would have been the last thing I ever heard had the collision been a fatal one. I had those thoughts afterward I would think of it all whenever I heard this song. I was grateful though, because I love REM, and wouldn't want the last thing I heard to be something I didn't like.
It's one of those musical masterpieces that's like a piece of art with a sense of infinity that expresses something inexpressible in any other way. That's why you can't really explain it in mere words: you just feel it on a deep level. I think it will be just as powerful in hundreds of years time.

I’m proud to say I went to the same high school as Michael Stipe (not at the same time - I was a teenager in the 90’s). We shared the same theatre teacher and believe it or not, he had an Afro back in the day. It makes perfect sense that he had a theatrical background and R.E.M. really pulled off a rare gem of the 90’s that still holds water and doesn’t sound dated at all even today.

Rem has been a major piece of my life and I have loved them since I discovered them at 17 and now I am 48 and I still feel the same way when I listen to them now. My only complaint is that after leaving the I. R. S. Label they became too commercial and when Bill left the music was never the same. Still love them though and if you haven't heard their 80s work then you are loosing out on the most brilliant work they have ever done.
I was 16 and am now 47... 31 yrs... :O I stopped liking the music after Monster. New Adventures in Hi Fi has some great track, too but after that I completely lost them.
46 here, I remember some hardcore REM fans went as far to call them sellouts when Green came out. Just think back to the time when REM and U2 were the biggest bands of the 80's that weren't getting the traditional "push". I was a huge fan, from Murmur through Monster, but nothing after that was compelling to me. But that was a great run and they made a ton of money. I predict they will do a reunion with Bill Berry eventually.
Great tune along w their others, throwback albums for sure, but I also lost them after the mid 90s cuz it wasn’t as easy following USA bands overseas then and their later stuff didn’t resonate the same as it did when keg beer was foaming out of our noses at house parties where u always heard REM! 🎉💥🍻
When I was in High-school I rode the bus to school, we had a cool bus-driver who would let us listen to the radio on our way to school, at the time, this was on rotation, the song always played at the same time every morning at the same place on the route, so when ever I hear the song it reminds me of riding on the school bus.
That's a nice story. I had a similar experience in elementary school. Only we had a tape deck on our bus and our very patient driver let us listen to either the Dirty Dancing or Cocktail soundtrack over and over and over and over again. So all those dumb songs remind me of the school bus. I've never even seen those movies!

I was introduced to REM in the 80s when i bought the album "dead letter office" it was an album of outtakes and b-sides i think and when i heard the first 2 songs of side one i was blown away i had never heard anything like that before they didn't sound like the 80s which was a breath of Fresh air they were indie and americana before those labels were invented they never used synthesizers or sequencers which was common with all music in the 80s and felt alien to me so as an outsider REM really connected with me and then I began to listen to their other albums. i read in a magazine that the smiths and REM listened to each others records and I think that has something to do with only a handful of bands made organic music at that time. they had a big cult following travelling all over america to their concerts but listening to their 80s output were really touching.every time i hear the song "crazy" from D.L.O. it brings a tear to my eye even though they didn't write it themselves but by another athens band named pylon I really miss 80s REM . They were really something special and there will never be a band like them again .even though i like "losing my religion" which broke them through to the masses things were never the same they still made great music but fans of "losing my religion and "everybody hurts" who have never heard 80s REM should give it a listen theyll be in for a Surprise . its right when people say things were never the same after bill left .they were never a heavy rock band but "monster" was a tribute to the late kurt cobain , that's why it's so rocky but when they made it big it was like they didn't belong to us 80s fans anymore and became rock stars on the front pages of the music magazines around the globe

I was lucky enough to see one of their free tour shows for their album release back in 2001z I was 19 and living in Toronto for a few months from Ireland and was in Eaton centre when. Everyone started shouting it’s R E M and running for the doors. What an experience and totally free of charge.

@Cindy Who I think the 1990s had some good stuff. But it took me years to appreciate the music (or some of it) that was made in that decade. Like a lot of people said to this video (and to videos all over UA-cam), I would hear songs as a child with no appreciation for them, then loved them when I became a man.
Have a music memory but with an unknown guy singing this song outside SacreCoer in Paris in around 2000. Sitting on the stairs in the mids of people singing it so beautifully. What a memory.

Then 2000 started with Napster and that was the beginning of the end of albums and music

I remember when this song was out and I loved it so much for so long, that I was afraid to watch this video, as I didn't want to be disappointed by hearing that R.E.M. wrote the song as a joke, or that they hated the video, or that they are sick of this song etc. But I'm glad I did watch this short documentary as it only confirmed that this song is so cherished by its creators and that it does have the deep meaning I always imagined it did.
Half of the success of this music is due to its videoclip. I'm heavy metal guy, but the references with classic Reinassance, old classic literature makes you try to decipher the lyrics in a way it makes sense to you in a completely different way than another person. It touches you in you own way, in your own vibe...

I grew up in the church and lived with abused children whos parents prayed to God each Sunday morning. While I was very young at the time I immediately knew this was wrong. This song is so powerful for a person like me.

I was 8 when this came out and I’m 37. My parents used to crank the album on repeat across from my bedroom at all hours of the night. Owe them, as I feel this bolstered my ear for music and helped me later on guitar.

This song Is one of the most memorable songs I ever remember . Thirty years ago I was just a fresh man, young and full of hope when I landed in Vancouver, now I am an old man and still this song hits me as before.
I haven't listened to this song in so many years I'm embarrassed to even guess. I love it. Always have, always will. There's just something so raw and vulnerable Stipe brings to this song. You can hear pain, longing, reckoning, and a final acceptance. The chords, the harmonies. Just brilliant.

My niece was 6 when this song came out. I was driving in the car with her and it came on the radio. I was surprised she knew every word and sang along perfectly. It still makes me happy to think of this. Great song.

I can remember the spring that came out. My brother came home from a study abroad program from Ireland. It was a beautiful spring, and this new music from REM made it even more beautiful.

I crashed my car to this when I was 21. For a long time after the accident I thought this song would have been the last thing I ever heard had the collision been a fatal one. I had those thoughts afterward I would think of it all whenever I heard this song. I was grateful though, because I love REM, and wouldn't want the last thing I heard to be something I didn't like.

I’m proud to say I went to the same high school as Michael Stipe (not at the same time - I was a teenager in the 90’s). We shared the same theatre teacher and believe it or not, he had an Afro back in the day. It makes perfect sense that he had a theatrical background and R.E.M. really pulled off a rare gem of the 90’s that still holds water and doesn’t sound dated at all even today.

I remember when this came out, I was so riveted to it and played it over and over again. It felt like there was even a deeper meaning in there somewhere, but I couldn't get to it, so , play it again, play it again. The haunting tune that pulls at you shaking a wispy finger.. "don't you get it" it says...
Rem has been a major piece of my life and I have loved them since I discovered them at 17 and now I am 48 and I still feel the same way when I listen to them now. My only complaint is that after leaving the I. R. S. Label they became too commercial and when Bill left the music was never the same. Still love them though and if you haven't heard their 80s work then you are loosing out on the most brilliant work they have ever done.

I stopped liking the music after Monster. New Adventures in Hi Fi has some great track, too but after that I completely lost them.
46 here, I remember some hardcore REM fans went as far to call them sellouts when Green came out. Just think back to the time when REM and U2 were the biggest bands of the 80's that weren't getting the traditional "push". I was a huge fan, from Murmur through Monster, but nothing after that was compelling to me. But that was a great run and they made a ton of money. I predict they will do a reunion with Bill Berry eventually.
Great tune along w their others, throwback albums for sure, but I also lost them after the mid 90s cuz it wasn’t as easy following USA bands overseas then and their later stuff didn’t resonate the same as it did when keg beer was foaming out of our noses at house parties where u always heard REM! 🎉💥🍻

When I was in High-school I rode the bus to school, we had a cool bus-driver who would let us listen to the radio on our way to school, at the time, this was on rotation, the song always played at the same time every morning at the same place on the route, so when ever I hear the song it reminds me of riding on the school bus.
That's a nice story. I had a similar experience in elementary school. Only we had a tape deck on our bus and our very patient driver let us listen to either the Dirty Dancing or Cocktail soundtrack over and over and over and over again. So all those dumb songs remind me of the school bus. I've never even seen those movies!

I was introduced to REM in the 80s when i bought the album "dead letter
office" it was an album of outtakes and b-sides i think and when i heard the first 2 songs of side one i was blown away i had never heard anything like that before they didn't sound like the 80s which was a breath of Fresh air they were indie and americana before those labels were invented they never used synthesizers or sequencers which was common with all music in the 80s and felt alien to me so as an outsider REM really connected with me and then I began to listen to their other albums. i read in a magazine that the smiths and REM listened to each others records and I think that has something to do with only a handful of bands made organic music at that time. they had a big cult following travelling all over america to their concerts but listening to their 80s output were really touching.every time i hear the song "crazy" from D.L.O. it brings a tear to my eye even though they didn't write it themselves but by another athens band named pylon I really miss 80s REM . They were really something special and there will never be a band like them again .even though i like "losing my religion" which broke them through to the masses things were never the same they still made great music but fans of "losing my religion and "everybody hurts" who have never heard 80s REM should give it a listen

but when they made it big it was like they didn't belong to us 80s fans anymore and became rock stars on the front pages of the music magazines around the globe

God I miss the 90's
I was lucky enough to see one of their free tour shows for their album release back in 2001z I was 19 and living in Toronto for a few months from Ireland and was in Eaton centre when. Everyone started shouting it’s R E M and running for the doors. What an experience and totally free of charge.
Stipe's phrasing is remarkable. Sounds so easy to sing - and where vocal range is concerned it is - but the phrasing is brilliant.
R.E.M. one of my favs. I won a cd while they were first coming out. I loved it and always followed them. Still wonderful to listen to, brings me back to so many stages of my life. Thank you

I was 18 when this Song came out. Living in Brazil in 1991 wasnt easy,but this lyrics gave me hope and strength to go through a difficult time of my life.
Thank God I grew up in the 70s/80s. While I know/see/hear everyone saying their specific generation of music was the best, The 70s-90s music was truly GOLD.

@Cindy Who I think the 1990s had some good stuff. But it took me years to appreciate the music (or some of it) that was made in that decade. Like a lot of people said to this video (and to videos all over UA-cam), I would hear songs as a child with no appreciation for them, then loved them when I became a man.

The lyrics to this song are just beautiful stipe was an amazing lyricist so central rain blew me away too. But every word of this song is so haunting and amazing . The video was awesome. I think the defining song of the decade . Maybe teen spirit but this actually is a much better song and kicked off the 90s away from hair metal people think it was grunge but r.e.m around for years but this was their smash breakthrough globally I'd say it bridged the 80s into the grunge era . This was huge in 1991 and as it's over played run on radio was ending tern spirit came out in that winter of 91 so two great bands in the 90s. God I miss the 90s I was only 10 and then 11 into 91 but I knew it was a great time for music. R.e.m. was my awakening away from teeny bop stuff that young kids under 10 like nkotb tiffany debbie Gibson I just felt excited to be a part of r.e.m. and the grunge early era by 93 I was sick of grunge lol. I was 13 when kurt Cobain died 12 6 months before when river Phoenix died. The early 90s were just very serious and scary. I loved it though and things actually got better the 90s as a decade was one if the best in every way it was peaceful economy was good. Then 2000 started with Napster and that was the beginning of the end of albums and music

I remember when this song was out and I loved it so much for so long, that I was afraid to watch this video, as I didn't want to be disappointed by hearing that R.E.M. wrote the song as a joke, or that they hated the video, or that they are sick of this song etc.
But I'm glad I did watch this short documentary as it only confirmed that this song is so cherished by its creators and that it does have the deep meaning I always imagined it did.

Half of the success of this music is due to its videoclip. I'm heavy metal guy, but the references with classic Reinassance, old classic literature makes you try to decipher the lyrics in a way it makes sense to you in a completely different way than another person. It touches you in you own way, in your own vibe...
