      "cheating" Is a stupid word! I am so glad I ran into this video. I have had a few people tell me I cheat because I draw out my subject a few times before transferring it to the canvas.

    • @kittenmimi5326
      @kittenmimi5326 5 років тому +26

      I only use "cheating" to describe someone who say, stole and traced someone else's work and claiming originality over it so they could seem like a better artist. But aside from that context, it's a stupid thing to say to an artist.

      Fernando Saint I used to draw things by starting in one spot and then drawing everything else by relative distance between "landmarks" it was effective but very time consuming and if you make a mistake early on and don't catch it ,it can throw off the whole picture so I try to sketch out the basic shapes and size before going into detail

    Where the hell have you been all my life, your discourse on Art and Painting is what every person who has anxiety or an art block needs to hear. There is no limits to what we can do, art probably being one the only things we have that really doesn't need any rules or instructions, just maybe the limit of our imagination.

    • @theoriginallee1014

      Linu Hamid thats me! Have been blocked, or rather, blocked myself due to heaviness of expectations from others and severe depression from artistically separate but personal situations. Gravitated to new medium I thought I could master, huge failure - tried to keep painting my portraits and... I set it all down and walked away. Year four now and this guy. This guy! I stumbled on his channel and felt what I thought the long dead flame of wanting to paint return. Its not about money, the almighty stressor every person in my life wouldn't shut up about. Do this, you must do this. Don't get a job, paint. Throwing your talent away. How dare you get a real job. Ect ect. Easy to see why I walked from the canvas. And now? If I pick up again I'm not even telling anyone.
      I love this channel. Even the music is conducive (for me) to wanting to create again. I am so thankful for the content and wisdom he gives. And yes, I held my breath when he laid down the light green over the hair. Yes, I thought shit. Why!!! But thats just it. He's provocative, he wants you to hokd your breath for even just a second. It's perfect. He's brilliant. I'm hooked. Thank you.

    I STILL hear from people that an artist shouldn’t use references, that it’s cheating and we should just draw something from memory.

    • @SincerestSawa
      @SincerestSawa 5 років тому +7

      Bee R. I'm pretty sure most artists use reference material, I think the goal is to draw inspiration from them or to get an idea of shadows and contrast and to not outright copy someone else's work, I'm sure experienced artists don't need to use reference material as much

      Yes, statements on what a "real' artist is, does and doesn't do, should or shouldn't do, or what or how the artist should be creatively influenced, or what we should know (automatically?) before we draw or paint, etc., is so ridiculous and annoying and most of all presumptive (!), of people who aren't artists, as usually those are the ones who love to bestow upon us their "words-of-wisdom" and advice.
      Of course it's good to keep an open mind, and always be open to learning that hidden gem of enlightment someone may drop on you, but I think just learning to ignore people who are not creatives can be a good thing too. LOL (as in water off a duck, so to speak).

    • @pat4005
      @pat4005 3 роки тому +1

      @@SincerestSawa That's a good take on it. 😊
      Drawing from life is the best, then good photos can make good reference if you think of them as a jumping-off point.
      I always refer back to life as a reference refresher for certain things or new things, (like textures, and lighting), but as you said, as an artist gains more experience, you don't need reference material as much (depending upon what you are doing, of course).
      I have always loved drawing and painting people, nature and objects. (OK, just about everything), and from life first, if possible, as it's the greatest learning tool.
      The camera sees with one eye, but we see with two, so a camera's view is different. But the reference is great when you can't observe something in person.
      I love drawing and painting fantasy and tecnology too, and a recent painting of an Owlbear was built upon some refrences of different types of fur and feathers, etc., since I didn't have the luck of finding a real Owlbear to pose for me. 😉

    I love you, man! You're not a rule-breaker, you just know that you're free by default which we are!! What are we here on earth for, right? There ain't no rule book to creating, only those who were created by those who already died. And who are they to say what should be and what should not be? We're the same cells exploring the earth who wanted to have our own experiences and make each of them truly our own. So, kudos to your mindset! I have the same. And thank you that you're brave enough to refuse to be contained in a mold so we can realize we're free by default, too!

    I now understand that destroying areas of the painting is part of your art. As you are the artist and we are only the audience, this is totally up to you. And it is perfectly fine that way. Same with details or obscuring the same. Just wanted to say I really enjoyed watching that beautiful hair midway into the video, even if it didn’t make it into the final painting. Knowing it was there when now it isn’t anymore, also is a nice thought for me.

    Hello yet again Alpay
    I'm not sure if I told you before, however I'll say it here. You're voice is hypnotic. Just relax, it's safe to relax. Nothing really matters anymore. Your eyes are getting tired and they're wanting to close ............. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh - into trance
    That's excellent ! The repetition is also very good.
    I'm a hypnotist for the last 25 years and I must say, that you've got the tone, the slow delivery off to a tee.
    I mean all this as a compliment, so please don't be offended
    Putting all that to one side, I do like your paintings very much. I'm also an artist myself, technical illustrator and I used to be a draughtsman for about 40 years and that was very lucrative. I loved the idea that I got paid as much for drawing a pressure vessel and the same amount for rubbing it out and altering it to the new instructions.
    Now I'm 74, but I only look about 25 in a poor light from about 500 yards. I'm on a UK pension and it's not really enough to keep me in the style to which I'm accustomed, so I still do oil paintings here in Ban Chang, Thailand. I can paint anything, any subject and quite often do. So if you know anyone in the vicinity who needs a painting then I'm your man. Ban Chang is the "Art Hub" of the known universe as you know ....................... Sorry about that I was just toying with your incredulity No, in reality Ban Chang is the back of beyond for all thing artistic. It's a very nice place otherwise
    Anyway, well done and keep up the good work. Don't let the critics grind you down. You'll do for me !
    Kind regards - Chris in Thailand

    Wow, I watched a few paintings from your channel and by far this is the most captivating for me. I love her expression and the fact that she hide her eyes gave her some mystery vibe. I would never said it's mundain.
    Anyway, I agree with your point about "cheating" in art. When I was a teenager, I was hyper focus about "rules" and "proper way" of doing something, drawing or writing for example, but when I get older, I realised that they are just tools. And if a particular tool doesn't working for me, it's okay to switch to something different or invent my own one. But even now I sometimes get really overhealmed by algorithm, that is constantly showing me videos about "how to do X". I found out that the best remedium for me, when I get artblock, is taking a break from any tutorials and just watch some movies, read a book or see a nice picures, and wait for a moment, when I want to make anything just because it's fun.

    I have recently found that there is some beauty in adding a little chaos in a portrait piece as opposed to focusing on a more clean and realistic approach. I have started experimenting with this concept by drawing portraits in charcoal starting with applying charcoal dust randomly all around the paper ten blocking in where the main features of the face will be. I'm not concerning myself with how close to the reference photo is I just want to create beauty from chaos, its surprisingly a very enjoyable and enlightening approach and has injected that passion for drawing I've seemed to have lost over the last few years. I highly recommend giving it a try, if anything it's extremely fun and very messy.

    Sometimes I think that simplicity and simple paintings are also interesting and insightful. Art may not always be complex and I like it about art. Hope to see a simple yet interesting video from you. Thank you for your videos!!!!!

    This is a really beautiful video. Not only the art but the way your mind works, it makes me really motivated to just draw the things I want in the way I feel about art and I never realised fully how I could do that. Maybe I still don't sometimes, when I get influenced by social media again, but you helped so much and I will keep your words in mind. You gained a new subscriber 💕

    I love your videos!! Especially when you talk about the whole "you can't do this because youre cheating" thing. Sometimes I do that to myself, and I think it's an excuse for a justification of my insecurities about the struggles I have in painting XD

    I've been slowly trying to paint more portraits and hearing "there are no skin tones" kind of helps a lot??? As a someone who's in the middle of beginner and intermediate with art it helps with being a bit more confident in trying more with the idea of skin tones. Definitely excited to practice more with values!
