great story I retired at 65 and now I have lost all those in a job just to make years in the past year I have learned what a good artist I am and never gave my self a chance at 65 I have found my passion.
Better late then never right? Happy painting!
@@ChrisKempter am poor but painting gives me contempment
Grandma Moses never painted before she was 70.
I wish painting gave me contentment. It does on one hand and on the other hand it makes me frustrated and tests my patience.. im a instant gratification personality and I always work ….nothing seems to ever be play unless I’m watching my dogs run and play or some great movie…book. Painting is work and lots of learning curves. I also take it too seriously! Id rather work on a thing that results in a fine vessel of some useful kind or useful somethings. To me there is nothing useful about a painting on the wall more than mere decoration and I know how much work goes in to some of them….yet deep inside it seems trivial in the grand scheme of thing.. don’t know if that’s right. Im hoping it’s just a phase….sounds like depression too…. Everybody has different relationship with IT. painting….painting is the harder of any art I tried. Just need to know more about it. Acrylic to me is only half the process… it has some very frustrating ( to me) things about it.. it also alarms me when many painters settle in to a same thing different subject style. So called trademark… is that a goal? Why? Should it be?
@@cynthiamarston2208 learn patience first its hard i am still learning that in my life
As a veteran drawer and a neophyte painter this video was a better teaching tool than Bob Ross. Not that Bob Ross isn't great at edifying people how to paint. This video was perfect for me. To see you mess up and paint through your error and find what you were looking for. To see the camera zoomed in and see you mix with color and experiment, to hear your process. I met my favorite artist Donato Giancola, he told me he took pictures of his family on the beach for his paintings. I'm thirty days into my big canvas painting and your video is guiding me. Thank you so much!
Thank you!! That means a lot!
Your mom was right when she said you could do it. Great painting.
There are no words in the English language that can express how beautiful your painting is ! I truly love it !
Well said 👏
Thanks!
Preciate you
When our Amazing Lord was sculpting his master pieces he out did himself with the Kempters, Cris I believe he gave you a little more than his best, Stay Safe Stay Strong looking forward to Years of the sights and sounds of your talents, God love You and so do I🤟🏼🙋🏼♂️
This painting is beautiful and listening to your thoughts was the most important thing for me.
Chris, this is just incredible. I still can't believe your progress over the years. ❤
😘
Well Chris, as a lifelong artist myself, I'd have to say that the talent you have is exceptional. Keep it up, your doing a great job.
Wonderful story! Wonderful painting! Excellent 💯😁👍
Oh my goodness Chris. This painting is superb. I loved watching how it evolved from a blank canvas to a stunning realistic panoramic view. Wow!
Thanks so much 😊
Wait for it....wait for it..the Drum Rolls please....100,000 views. Congratulations Chris!
Thanks! This video continues to impress and astound me! Thanks again for the commission that started all this!
OMG, That is beautiful! I would love to have that hanging on my wall.
Would you be interested in a print? Thinking about getting some made.
Over 150,000 views now, and 8700 subscribers...going to 10000! Great job.
Thank you sir!
MAGNIFICENT. If I had made it..I wouldn't have been able to scratch my head. True story. Thanks for sharing..all of it.
It's wonderfully rendered and compositionally well constructed. One thing I think that might have added to the atmosphere of the piece is to add a tinge of those pinks and oranges in the clouds into the highlights, particularly in the foreground. I really feel like the cowboy's shirt could've used colored highlights. That wouldve helped anchor the characters into the scene. If that sun is setting and glowing pink then it's got to be casting colored light. Someone once told me that plain white highlights can look flat or dull, and instead warm or cool colors could be used to create more ambience and believability. Just a suggestion to think about on future pieces. Well done!
Good advice.
Definitely. This was completely new territory for me. I built this painting from around 40 different photos with light coming from that many directions. There is absolutely room to improve in this piece, but at this point, I’m still learning. I plan to do more of these western style paintings soon. I hope to learn more about lighting, temps and shading with color instead of just white.
Yep!

Thanks for taking the time to share this with others, it is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
What is art? Art is story. All art is story. A photograph of something is the thing itself. The painting is the story of it. Story was the first art form and all art forms have that foundation. A story is a shared experience. All art is a shared experience. We need art because we need story because we need that shared experience.
😁👋🥰😳wow that is so beautiful, you have so much patience to do all that art, that is amazing ,I like your voice ,your story is beautiful, thank you for sharing, your story gives us ,to trust in ourselves ,apréciate all this beautiful words ,wow God blessed you 🙏always, I’m talking for my self ,I’m sure other people think the same as me 😁🤔🥰thank you , awesome painting, I really enjoy listening to you, beautiful voice, You have so much talent, 😅blessings ,and thank you again for your time, and your step-by-step tutorial🥰Bravo 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🥰😁🦋 how can you paint and talk? Wow amazing OK. Take care.🥰🦋🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍👌👌👌
Thanks!
Truly amazing painting and a great story! Loved the video! Keep up the good work.
Thank you sir!
I just don't understand modern art especially when someone paints a single black dot on a white canvas and critics say they absolutely love it. There's so much snobbery in the art world these days leaving very little room for wonderful pieces like this.
Facts, facts.
Your hands are a gift from God for the rest of us. Your mom and the man who commissioned the Stearman both deserve our thanks.
Great painting, You are not artists with a “” talent, you have a great magnificent talent.
The thing that totally stunned me watching you paint is how, after finishing a complete idea, whoosh... you paint right over it and begin again, and create a different idea; that's literally the art of 'letting go'.
THAT PAINTING IS EPIC, KEEP IT UP ..
Thanks!!
I love your story on how you came into painting. It is almost odd how life takes one down path that might not even be considered. Beautiful work.
Dude, those rocks are almost painfully detailed! I can't quit looking at them. The take away from this, I think, is don't second guess your mama's instinct. She already knew, You're truly gifted, brother.
What you said about creating something of your own and not just copy a photo: I can't agree with that. I am a wild life and portrait artist and painting a tiger or a human face needs to be exactly as they are on a photo! And it's art too!
Well done! I am 18 and I have been doing realistic acrylic paintings since I was in 5th grade. I want to start trying to get the depth and pop I see in your painting and as well as some of chuck blacks but when I tried oil I had the same frustrations with the never drying and ended up boxing the oils away and throwing away the painting to do in acrylic. I would love an explanation or a video that explains how you work your mediums to get that color to pop and mix well. Thanks.
Beautiful job capturing this magical moment.
Thank you!
It takes as long as it takes. Ultimately it's all about you and your integrity as a human. What you create is a representation of who you are. Happy Failures.
Lol thanks.
i sat down to watch this but had to stop after a couple of minutes..
..10 minutes later i was back with my cup of coffee (couple of biscuits too) and settled down to watch.. aldi's coffee has never tasted better.. thanks for the video and journey :)
ps. didnt touch the biscuits
Lol no worries. They would be stale by the time I got to them.
absolutely love this...ON that same page.... used to be in galleries, solo shows... then left that world and lost my art.....JUST Now returning.... thank you for this!
I’m glad to hear you are getting back into it!
You got it! That's what I've wondered myself; coping a photo & making it ones own!,
Great painting Chris. For me though, your verbal distillation of the journey and process was more interesting. You actually have a great voice for this, and your calm delivery was refreshing to hear. You sound like you have lots of skills, metal worker, painter, narrator, and possibly a book writer. Let alone a violin player, vocalist, and jeweler!
I’m blushing lol
Nice landscape. Congratulations. This what painting is about: a winding road, where sometimes you want something, but the canvas says another, and how we must change the point of view, and start all over... Comes and goes... Is the quest for a dream made of color and hard work
You should be a poet.
@@ChrisKempter that is a serious craftsmanship.... Words are precious..
Oh my goodness!❤❤❤❤
This process seriously moved me...to tears!
It's absolutely stunning, and to see how many times you painted over what I thought were finished parts and made them better. Inspiring!
And to see how you added the characters over your background...I've never seen it done this way as typically people have them sketched or blocked in and paint background around them.
Not to mention...ACRYLICS!
Truly a magnificent piece.
Thank you for sharing this video. Truly inspired me.
Toni
Wow, thank you for such kind words! I definitely have a different way of doing things. I didn’t got to art school, so I kinda came up with my own weird way of doing things.
@ChrisKempter in my opinion there really is no right or wrong way, whatever works for you and brings you joy and a sense of accomplishment rules really don't matter.
@@nemo9540 I agree 100% This video goes to show exactly that! What ever works for you. 🥰
@nakiskalynn8383 🤙
A genuine congrats to you young man. I'm not sure anyone who hasn't done it realize the moments. The steps, the obstacles that give you every reason to throw it all away. It's s much harder than most can imagine. Not painting, but everything internal and external that comes along with it. You should be so proud of yourself.
Thanks!
@@ChrisKempter you are a real talent and king of sky painting !
It's beautiful! I've recently started wet on wet landscapes. Watching Bill Alexander, and Bob Ross. It's a wonderful escape from reality for a while. I could never draw very well, but I have found that I can do those types of landscapes.
Very cool!
A timeless painting that will please the eye for generations to come.
Thank you!
The thadaaaaa at the end😂😂😂
You can see how happie he is that its finished👍
For real though. That relief would sell for top dollar!
Artwork is never finished; it is only abandoned.
I would hate to be your paintings lol
FYI ART it's not about how long it takes, but it's all about how it looks once finished. Some of the most beautiful artwork that hangs in Museums took only minutes to create!
👍
Like which ones?
Gorgeous! Spectacular! I'm a retired model maker from the 90s who worked in the film industry. Your work has inspired me to take up painting. Thank you fine sir!
I am so glad this video popped up in my suggestions....Wow! Subscribed and thanks for sharing!
Thanks for subbing!
Perspective and detail is amazing.
Your thoughts are the same journeys i had.Your honesty is the work pf a true artist
Thanks!
Wow! Chris this is in my eyes a true masterpiece! Your story in the narration is truly touching and inspirational to all. I have always been interested in Drawing and painting from a very young age. My first experience with oil paints and canvas was much like yours watching reruns of Bob Ross and becoming inspired by his narration throughout his on screen tutorials. However I have never had that ability too bring out the depth and realism in my paintings. I put down the brush quite a few years ago now however your video has truly inspired me to pick up the paint brush again and this time create my own scene rather then copy an image or a scene from a photo. Persistence is the key and I think that learning to make changes on your canvas and paint over something you are not happy with is the true experience. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to seeing many more of your creations.
Thank you! I definitely would encourage you to pick it up again! Life is too short to not give it a shot!
@@ChrisKempter Thank you Chris I definitely will. 😉
What an incredible painting! I am so envious of your talent!
Thank you!
beautiful work specially from someone who's self taught. I wouldn't know that if you hadn't said so. Anyway, I am so glad you decided to take on this path which is very inspirational as I am a self taught artist myself. Great job!
Thanks! That’s awesome! If you learn something the hard way, it sticks with you better.
Chris, definitely your best non-music video ever. I make that distinction for a reason. Something unique comes out of you when you're playing and/or singing, it's spiritual. It's the work of art. A much harder bar to reach in a video about creating visual art where the goal is to accurately describe feelings and processes. That being said, this video is astounding. Perfect to it's purpose, revealing of your mind and heart. Showing the result of the courage to change, and change again. Intended or not it creates a very personal connection with you, when I think about it, a very Christ like thing to do. I could go on but I won't. Brother, you hit this one out of the park. I hope creating this video brings rightful confidence, pride of the work God has/is doing in you, and Peace. Thank you Chris.
Wow! I really appreciate that kind words. This one definitely made me a much better artist and challenged me in many ways!
As a self-taught artist myself. I'm in awe with the beauty and depth of this painting.❤😍 It conveys a vivid imagery of western culture and hard work. I felt lucky coming across your video. It's my first time watching one of your paintings. And you've inspired me with your story to stay consistent & work harder.🥹 I've been struggling to keep up.
You did a wonderful job 👌🏼👍🏼
Chris, this is brilliant and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your work/love and I hope you finished that book of yours.
Your very welcome!
Had to laugh w every sentence you uttered, Chris. "Hey! This guy is me, lol!"
Three days ago I finished a thousand word intro to a self-help book on my especially unique methodology for surviving a debilitating stroke. Mine left me paralyzed and bed-ridden. Doctors told my family it would be wise to start preparing for the worst. They admitted they shouldn't say anything but they felt obligated to tell them at best I had a week to live. As of April 17th, it's been sixteen years. My sisters had told me what they said. The result of that? Three months later I walked out of said hospital 85% recovered. That wasn't the methodology, but it was a very effective stimulus toward my actions and intent.
Helluva job, by the way. CS. I am in agreement with everything you've stated. It's uncanny. So far I've accumulated stuff... slowly isn't the word for it... lot's of stuff... while observing and learning.. it's really about the doing though, isn't it? I now have assembled almost everything to start and finish a painting in each and every kind of medium. No lie. My plan is to illustrate the book myself, and after hearing your innermost thoughts and watching you work, I think I'm finally ready to begin. You are an impressive guy. The irony is that all I really know for sure about the book is which illustrations it's going to need.
Thanks for this, Chris. You have a great, mom. Treasure her for her insight and her ability to look beyond the pale and into your soul. I will be back.
Thank you so much for your "journey" as it continues to go and grow. I fell the same ! I m 80 yrs . I took major art in H S then went on to classes outside. Basically self taught with some guidance from pros. I have sold a few - although I m still learning my own style and confidence abt it. It seems to change from each painting to painting. - it depends the way I feel and how to approach it. p s keep me posted.
This could be a Boards of Canada album cover. Great work!
Wow...what a stunning painting! Very well done. I guess you never know what's inside us 'till you try...
Yep!
You are a natural talent. I am so happy for you that you found that you can create the magic.
Thanks! I appreciate that
Wow. Just wow! Incredibly beautiful.
im amazed at someone having the talent to do this Its the best I've ever seen and I'm 63
Persistence pays. Excellent job.
Thanks!
This is so refreshing - love listening to you speak as you create a STUNNINGLY captivating piece ❤
Thank you so much!
Fabulous painting, no wonder it took so long. Just wonderful. Raewyn, Brisbane.
I love this painting and your commentary about true creativity. All my own paintings are landscapes with trees and valleys, horses, birds and much more; just like yours except I don’t use any reference material or preconceived ideas of what I’m painting- I just make it up as I go along. Is that true creativity?
I think that’s the truest form of art.
I’d love to see your work.
Great job Chris. Fantastic composition and capture of the love of a hard-working cowboy and his two kiddos.
Glad you enjoyed it
I am a trained commercial artist since way before photoshop and digital. Your story is amazing and your talent is fantastic.
The depth is Amazing! KEEEP IT 🔥🔥
I could cry seeeing the gifted way you paint. Thank you.
I enjoyed so much your experiences through narrative in painting.
Thanks!
Very nice. It is refreshing as well to hear some one speak about painting and their work, with out making it sound very pretentious - Bravo, great work.
Thanks! I do my best.
I would encourage you to continue in your painting journey. As a professional artist myself you have raw, natural talent with great potential still ahead.
I started with your how to paint a rock video and then found this. I really enjoyed the story and watching you work. It's truly a labor of love when an artist struggles for perfection. I do the same thing. I'm also self taught. Figuring out the composition is the hardest part. It's a fun creative process though and so fulfilling when it's done. Thanks for this very enjoyable video. I loved it.
So difficult to explain to someone who doesn't paint or draw - the "why" of art or what motivates someone to create a painting when there are cameras. Everything you expressed on this video are the same reasons and feelings most artists have felt or ask themselves. To me, art has always been my guilty pleasure. I do it to please myself whether or not anyone else understands or appreciates it is secondary. Loved this video!
Thank you! It’s definitely one of those things that you have to experience to really get the feel of it.
I hadn’t thought about your final comment before but it hit me hard!! I can relate!
Chris, your work is unbelievable. keep it up.
Thanks, will do!
I can identify with you on so many levels with painting. I am still learning color combinations….playing…I can pretty much take a photo and copy it. I do love taking a photo and changing. But it’s hard to do sometimes. I still have achieved the depth that I would like, but I think that just comes with time, patience, and continuing to paint. I love acrylics and their transparency to give more depth. I would love to just draw something and paint it, but I seem to have a blank head. Maybe some day…I’ve only been painting seriously for a couple years. I’m currently in my 70s…lol! But it is a stress reliever. Loved watching this!
Thanks! Yeah, painting with no reference photos is hard. Definitely worth the try though as it will teach you many things!
Your painting is beautiful, intriguing, tells a story...maybe even more than one. Your phenomenal painting is worth 299 days of your life. Excellent use of your time one earth. If I could paint like that, I would be having the time of my life. Listening to your video was an excellent use of my time. Thank you for sharing the experience and the expertise used to create it.
Thanks! I should have gotten it done in a few weeks lol.
This was a great lecture on painting. I really liked how you didn’t overdo it on the background music like so many do, I liked the echo quality of your mic, I loved the inspiration, and, man, what a beautiful work of art.
My wife just walked in the room and exclaimed “…what the hell are you watching… all because at the end I said “ F@&$ing BRAVO!” I don’t know which I enjoy more the finished product or the truth of self improvement and discovery…. Simply brilliant!!!
Lol thanks! I really appreciate that!
What a wonderful video, this video reminds me of the book you randomly pick up in a library that ends up being the best book you've ever read. So much to take in on this painting.. I watched this video, 3 times. I paint abstract . Always had respect for landscapes. Could never do it though. Thank you for taking the time to create this video, edit and share.
That came out amazing! Loved your story. Thank you for sharing it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
👍- Fabulous Art ! Fabulous Artist ! - 🙂-
This is a real labour of love ❤

Really enjoyed your narration of your work , loved how you can start on some vision and completely change your mind and come up with something else that works. Great work and I enjoyed your video.
Thank you sir! I appreciate that.
I wanted to get started with oil paints but what I did was work with simulation software(Nintendo) and I found I was able to develop my skills very quickly because there's no drying time when your working on a device. But I feel I know how to paint, in a way that would have taken many years of study. Looking at your work inspired me to try acyrilics. So, thank you for that.
that is exactly what happened to me maybe five years ago. My wife bought me an oil painting kit and a bob ross book. It had a good outcome
The painting itself is so amazing, but your story really touched, and validated me. My story is much to long but, the most critical I have been on myself and my art is that I venture away so much from my references that I feel like I failed at my attempt to create exactly as my reference. I find myself doing the same thing. Pulling from different things and creating a beautiful composition. So thank you!! I’m glad I found you here.
Definitely not a problem to get away from your reference material. Think of them “more like guidelines, then actual rules.”
Painters like this should be admired......they produce real and beautiful art that invokes in you an ambience of calm.....instead of taping bananas on a canvas
Thank you!
Doing great brother! Beautiful work. Once you get down the light source and how to work the color shading, it becomes something truly beautiful. I wish you all the best! God bless!
So beautiful! Love this video. Subscribed. Can't wait to see more. You have a wonderful gift!
This is one of the most beautiful paintings I have ever laid my eyes upon! Thank you for sharing your story, ! Watching this video brought tears to my eyes, for the fact I could relate to much that you said.
Thank you! But I really need you to take your eyes back. I need to ship out the painting.
💕🎨thanks for sharing 😊 beautiful !
Thank you for making this video. Your story and experience inspire me so much.
Beautiful painting! You are so encouraging and inspirational. As an artist I so appreciate your honesty and hearing how you worked through such a beautiful painting.
I agree with everything you have said. I have tons to learn and you still learn till you die.
👍
Your calm voice and this painting unfolding step by step put me in a whole diffrent world🔥
Very nice! Your use of color and space is well done. I have been a painter my whole life, I'm 76 now and still paint. Realism is what I always strive for, however it's your interpretation of realism that makes you the artist. I believe you should be painting in oils, and until you do, you'll never be completely satisfied with your level of skill. Even then maybe never!
Lol I’ve been wanting to go back to oils. Maybe I will
There’s SO MUCH meaning in that painting, and what it so beautiful is that the meaning can be different for every person viewing it. You know you are truly an artist when you can evoke such a strong emotion from what you put from paint to brush to canvas. I’m grateful for the journey you took me on with honest narration and the peacefulness of watching you perfect your craft.
Beautiful man, your painting, spirit, driven ambition, and knowing what life is all about, complete happiness.
Thanks!
