Fire Alarm Activation Due to Suppression System

  • My college's fire alarm system activated today due to the a problem with an FM-200 (fire suppression) system in a server room. The cause was most likely a heat detector, as the room was reported to be very hot when maintenance personnel arrived. Fortunately, they were able to respond in time to prevent a discharge, which would've meant a costly tank replacement.
    For those of you wondering why the signals in the old building aren't sounding, I assure you nothing is broken. They have it set up that way because there's a brick wall separating the two buildings, so they don't need to evacuate the whole campus the moment the alarm trips in one building.
    Signals:
    - Simplex TrueAlert speaker/strobes (indoor fire alarm)
    - Wheelock MB-24-G10 motor bells (outdoor fire alarm)
    - Wheelock Exceder HSR-A (agent release alarm)

    Surprised maintenance was able to prevent the discharge. Usually once a fire suppression system alarm triggers you may get a pre-Alert and then pre-discharge but once it reaches pre-discharge you only have 30 seconds to evacuate before the discharge starts unless someone had his or her finger on the abort switch/button and KEPT it held down until they got there.

      Especially not fun if the suppression system is something like halon.

      Unless the system was installed before Halon was banned, discontinued, or whatever I doubt it's Halon could be FM200, C02, or some other agent.

    I wonder if the old simplex with the white cover on the light is part of the previous fire alarms if this is an older building. Sorry to be 3 years late, but the Simplex Truealert speaker/strobes (the long ones that are rounded on the bottom (or top) & say "FIRE" on the bottom (or top) are the ones doing the slow whoop tone. (not sure if there's a message though) The Exceder is doing the code known as "pulse", in this case acting as an agent release alarm for the suppression system.

      Ohh... You mean the ones in the old wing. Those are horn/strobes, not speaker/strobes. They work, they're just not sounding because they don't need to be. It's the same system, but because the two buildings are separated by a brick wall, they don't need to have a total evacuation of the entire campus the moment the fire alarm trips in the other building.

      What type of panel is running the main buildings alarms

    • @Fahrenheit4051
      @Fahrenheit4051  6 років тому +1

      The whole college (excluding the library, which is a standalone building) is run on a network of 4100U and ES panels. The old and new building each has a 4100U. The 2013 addition to the new building has a 4100ES. I believe the ES is where the audio tones come from, since it was said to be different before 2013 (they have a 4003, but it might not be active since all the labeling was removed).
      During a fire alarm, both sections of the new building will go off together.

    • @Fahrenheit4051

      That signal is part of the server room fire suppression system for the server room. The "agent" in question is FM-200, a fire suppressant chemical. The signal is warning of an imminent discharge. The fire suppression panel tripped the 4100U/ES.

    • @Fahrenheit4051
      @Fahrenheit4051  2 роки тому

      No. The Exceder is connected to a suppression panel in the server room (presumably something from Ansul because it looks like a Fire-Lite). The panel trips a point on the 4100U/ES network.

    • @Fahrenheit4051

      Just slow whoop. The ones in the library (a separate building from the other two) do the classic 4003 slow whoop and a voice message. This system may have done it at one time, too; it has a 4003, but it may have been disconnected, as the labels were removed some time ago.
      Perhaps they changed over once the 2013 addition was added.

      The horns are silenced because it's a different section of the building, separated by a firewall and a series of fire doors.
      The system here consists of a 3-panel network. The panel in the old building was in alarm, too, but the signals aren't programmed to sound in this situation.
