This series gave me the confidence to attack a small basement room (5' x 8') for my homebrewing hobby. I had great confidence and all went well until the mudding. I used all the tools and techniques that you described. It sure looks easy when you do it,. When I was doing it that just was not so. I consider myself a handy DIY'er and have done ceramic tiling (backsplash, floors) some framing, hardwood floors etc. I found that there is a need for experience of many hours before an amateur should attempt doing drywall mud. My sesults were not the same as your video. There are so many variables and I think there is little room for eror to get a professional job. The use of the trowel was achallenge as the trowel would tend to wander resulting in ripples. I ended up over applying and generating a ton of dust when sanding it down. Also found manuu pin holes in the mud at my prime check. In the end this experiment has resulted in me deciding NOT to do th erest of the basement. I guess the positive is that Ilearned my limitations on a small project and did not waste my time nad money on a bigger one. Thanks Jeff PS Perhaps there is a video to address some of the issues that DIY'ers will run into? Maybe you have one but I did not see it?

This is great. He's easy to understand and I am able to get my renovation done myself. Just understand that I'm 64 with only framing experience and never touched drywall. I'm almost finished with my drywall install now. Just a really helpful video.
Start to finish - best diy series I've seen. I just retrofitted the drafty extension on a 125-year-old house in time to surprise my Dad when he arrived for Christmas. The result was eyes-wide "Wow!" Proper priming and a good coat of paint hide my first attempts at plastering :-) Your tips really reduced the aggravation of a first-timer tacklinga tricky job single-handed. Thank you for the personal responses to my questions - you got me past the most intimidating moments! And I won't avoid the next plastering job.

Drywall hanger here 25+ years experience....you don't always run your router aka cutout tool counterclockwise. On electrical boxes and window frames with trim yes, but on inside doorways and a window without trim such as a wrapped window you can run it clockwise and it will ride along the wood(residential) or metal (commercial) and make a clean cut.
I have watched all 13 episodes and I doubt that I have ever seen a better "how to video!" Too bad for me that there was not an internet when I finished two basements years ago. I could have reduced my dry wall time by 70% or more. As a one man crew, I had to "invent the wheel" on the means to lift 4x8' sheets up to the ceiling!

the whole playlist on how to do drywall from hanging to tape and mud is very instructional but i would like to see it done not like a pro but a full blowen novice that has no idea what to do and to use the basic tools that one could afford . like when you are mudding and taping all i could get was a 10 inch knife and one of those buckets .and lets say with the mud how do you mix it and how thick or thin it should be for each coat . I have seen how to mix but nobody explains how much water or the how thick or thin the mud should be. I have watched all of the vids you have done on this but I am still having trouble with the mud not being able to get it to smooth out and leaveing inperfection so after it dries and I sand it I am constantly remudding spots that are like missed spots that the mud did fill in . I as someone that has no idea what I am doing wrong and what should have been a few days is turning into a nightmare of a week . If you read this I thank you for the dyi vids and you time
Old school electricians had a trick they would use on apprentices they didn't like to help teach them proper safety. If the apprentice would ask them if the power was off, they would answer "yes". It didn't take long for the apprentices to learn to double check the power on wires.
My project where I am at: I have a room that was partially drywalled by my significant other years ago before we were together. Just the walls were done in a newbie fashion. The main objective was used what she had on hand and cover as much wall as she possibly could. The tape used is 100% fiberglass taped, as this was the thing suggested by all local hardware stores to her. So it was partially taped and mudded and the drywall is almost all hung until you come to tricky parts in the wall. Just do to the fact that she had run out of drywall. Now the number of years this has been hanging is about 15-years give or take. During this time, the ceiling, which is lathe and plaster covered by acoustic ceiling tiles, started to fall off exposing the old plaster. It had holes in it and insulation was falling out. So I said, "heck on it time to tear that down." I got a demo bar, a Tyvek suit, and respirator. Tore it down went nuts no more lathe and plaster ceiling! Where I have questions: Strapping, I wish you would have started with this! Absolutely zero drywall vids for the ceiling cover installing strapping on the ceiling and do not answer the question as to if it is a requirement or not. I was actually under the assumption that just like walls, I could screw to the studs without strapping and it would work just fine. I don't mind strapping the ceiling at all, to be rather honest. Understand the wall was put up long before the ceiling was an issue! The spaces in between the wall and ceiling are rather odd. Some spaces look as if I could use 2x4's for strapping instead of 1x3 if this makes sense. I would love to at least get the drywall ceiling up here as it is approaching winter and I will be losing a lot of heat into the uninsulated attic. I am also kind of on a relatively fixed budget, so I don't know that I would be able to spend a whole ton of cash insulating the attic this year, as I must get this ceiling finished up. Spray foam for me is out of the question I've seen the horror stories if it doesn't cure right. I eventually want to finish my attic as well down the road. But aside question with attics, 'Do I need to leave the vents open in the winter or can I plastic them up? There are a lot of small leaks elsewhere to eliminate some heat loss during the winter while still allowing enough air exchange?' Where do I go from here when installing the ceiling strapping? Is it a requirement? Can I use thicker strapping or possibly use no strapping and baseboards on the ceiling to get a halfway decent look? I would love it to look good. One other thing is on one wall it sticks out quite a bit on due to the fact when it was drywalled they left lathe along the bottom and screwed to it. One thing to note the fiberglass tape in her case did, in fact, stick to and is still sticking to regular all-purpose mud even after all of these years. My experience I expect to rough it out here it may take me quite a bit of time to get around to finishing and such I don't know that it will be 5 days in and out for me as this will be my first time touching a piece of drywall but it really is my only option at this time. Thanks in advance and forgive me for the long comment and possible grammar errors. Finally would love to say wonderful series by the way and would like to have permission to copy this material for offline viewing on a battery powered device as my electrical will likely be out when going through the motions here and I will likely want to refresh right before working on these things. But I did watch from start to finish not skipping a beat while I have a good working knowledge of a variety of things and am a likely candidate for just about anything I do not retain everything, unfortunately, I've done and tried so many things over the years it just is not possible.
in an old house i would use the strapping to keep the dimensional lumber from twisting. 1x4 can cover a 30 inch gap just fine. make sure to add a vapor barrier plastic sheet first. Cheers!
Loved the tip of putting the drill in reverse to prevent splitting. I've never heard of that and am anxious to try it! Another great video, keep up the good work. One question for you, is it frowned upon or more of a nuisance to install the drywall vertically in attempts to avoid more butt joints? Thanks!
Vertical installation can be tricky if your studs are not all in the perfect location and level. You will end up spending a crazy amount of time installing this way. Better to just stay tuned for our how to tape drywall series coming soon. It has already been shot and is due to come out this summer.
Riley Skov I’ve done it that way and it comes out great! Best drywall ever! But...I only hang drywall that way if I did the framing myself and I know it’s right.
So I binged watched your entire dry wall video set. They made me feel like I could actually do this drywall project myself!! Need to fire rate all the ceiling in order to get an occupancy permit. Do I have to [put the special cocking on every seem? and where do I put it for electrical? I am actually in Ottawa.....like you
fire rating does not require caulking unless you do not tape the joint. It also does not require caulking around electrical unless you have cut too large a hole. Use a drywall cutout tool that is quite exact and you will be fine. Cheers!
So here I go! I’m starting the drywall replacement after roof leak throughout the house. Any suggestions on how to remove the drywall on the ceiling without 3 feet of blown in new insulation falling on your head? Hmmm maybe a 1x2 strip of wood with a plastic tarp attached to it. Open long side of seams, and remove screws. Slide the strip of wood over the underside of the drywall, between the insulation and the back of the drywall and tack to the ceiling. Hopefully that might catch a big portion of it. Don’t know what else to do.

Hello, a silly question... What type of backing is behind the studs before installing the drywall? I am renovating my shower and tub area and noticed that the bottom part has started to crumble and looks like moisture has been accumulating over the years.. Greetings from Brampton, Ontario! Great video and an awesome channel! One quick comment on calculating screw length: Instead of 1.5 x material thickness + material thickness....it's easier just to think of it as 2.5 x material thickness.
These are my go-to videos for anything home related. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. If you have time and can answer this question for me, we are having a home built and I just found out that they are using 3/8 inch drywall in the house instead of half an inch. The only place they're using half inch is in the garage. Obviously 3/8 in is not as good as half inch, but it's cheaper and I'm guessing that's why they're using it. Is this acceptable or should I complain and try to get them to use half inch? I don't see them changing, but it would be worth a try if you think it's worth it. Most videos I watch all say that the half an inch is usually the standard now. Thanks again.
weird. I am not aware of any place that 3/8 is cheaper. 1/2 inch is very standard. I would check with your local building office. like the permit folks to see if this is allowed. Cheers!

hrmm is there a reason why they use metal for commercial? my dad chose metal for our house for a reason. just not sure why. wood seems much easier to deal with at least easier to mount things on because more grip.
Usually metal is used when the building is constructed according to the material size in advance. This is how many commercial projects are done. Wood is favorable when you have a lot of variety in finished dimension.
Our car port was partially closed in when we bought it but in the winter it is freezing. the wall on the house and the wall on the garage are still the original outer stucco and the two outer walls are paneling. We want to drywall the room but how do I drywall stucco? The stucco is very lumpy. I just started watching your video's and your work is not only fantastic but educational. Thank you!
I would install strapping on the stucco or just remove it( which may be really labor intensive.) Strapping is sufficient just be sure to use a good screw for masonry and pre drill the holes.
I work in commercial... I was told to do the walls first then the ceiling... I’m an electrician, I’m just trying to understand dry wall installs since I deal with it on a daily basis.

Can I assume that your length of screw formula doesn't apply to metal studs? I would presume that all you need is enough to penetrate the metal stud by perhaps 1/2" max. So for a 1/2" drywall a one inch fine screw should be fine correct?

Finally would love to say wonderful series by the way and would like to have permission to copy this material for offline viewing on a battery powered device as my electrical will likely be out when going through the motions here and I will likely want to refresh right before working on these things. But I did watch from start to finish not skipping a beat while I have a good working knowledge of a variety of things and am a likely candidate for just about anything I do not retain everything, unfortunately, I've done and tried so many things over the years it just is not possible.
in an old house i would use the strapping to keep the dimensional lumber from twisting. 1x4 can cover a 30 inch gap just fine. make sure to add a vapor barrier plastic sheet first. Cheers!

Loved the tip of putting the drill in reverse to prevent splitting. I've never heard of that and am anxious to try it! Another great video, keep up the good work. One question for you, is it frowned upon or more of a nuisance to install the drywall vertically in attempts to avoid more butt joints? Thanks!
Vertical installation can be tricky if your studs are not all in the perfect location and level. You will end up spending a crazy amount of time installing this way. Better to just stay tuned for our how to tape drywall series coming soon. It has already been shot and is due to come out this summer.
Riley Skov I’ve done it that way and it comes out great! Best drywall ever! But...I only hang drywall that way if I did the framing myself and I know it’s right.

So I binged watched your entire dry wall video set. They made me feel like I could actually do this drywall project myself!! Need to fire rate all the ceiling in order to get an occupancy permit. Do I have to [put the special cocking on every seem? and where do I put it for electrical? I am actually in Ottawa.....like you
fire rating does not require caulking unless you do not tape the joint. It also does not require caulking around electrical unless you have cut too large a hole. Use a drywall cutout tool that is quite exact and you will be fine. Cheers!

I've worked with a lot of screws in my life, that is not good advice.
So here I go! I’m starting the drywall replacement after roof leak throughout the house. Any suggestions on how to remove the drywall on the ceiling without 3 feet of blown in new insulation falling on your head? Hmmm maybe a 1x2 strip of wood with a plastic tarp attached to it. Open long side of seams, and remove screws. Slide the strip of wood over the underside of the drywall, between the insulation and the back of the drywall and tack to the ceiling. Hopefully that might catch a big portion of it. Don’t know what else to do.

Instead of a roto zip you can use a dremel with the adapter and bit that turn it into a roto zip. Not quite as fast but it works perfect.
Just did that a fews days ago, works great. Although the dremel provided bits seem to wear out fast.

Any differences in the drywall process when adding new drywall to old (specifically closing in a doorway). same process of hanging, tape and mud?

I noticed on your ceiling in the video that there are wood planks going across the ceiling joists; are those required?
From what i have been told yes they are necessary for support and to stop it buckling.

Hello, a silly question... What type of backing is behind the studs before installing the drywall? I am renovating my shower and tub area and noticed that the bottom part has started to crumble and looks like moisture has been accumulating over the years.. Greetings from Brampton, Ontario! We used cement backing then we tiled the shower. Never put drywall in a shower. Holmes on homes did a show on that. I believe he's on you tube.
Instead of a rotozip you can use a drywall bit on a dreamer with a depth guide

The construction field (and every other field) still use the imperial system. I think it's because of our proximity to the States (just guessing). It drives me crazy though hahaha

Great video and an awesome channel! One quick comment on calculating screw length: Instead of 1.5 x material thickness + material thickness....it's easier just to think of it as 2.5 x material thickness.

These are my go-to videos for anything home related. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. If you have time and can answer this question for me, we are having a home built and I just found out that they are using 3/8 inch drywall in the house instead of half an inch. The only place they're using half inch is in the garage. Obviously 3/8 in is not as good as half inch, but it's cheaper and I'm guessing that's why they're using it. Is this acceptable or should I complain and try to get them to use half inch? I don't see them changing, but it would be worth a try if you think it's worth it. Most videos I watch all say that the half an inch is usually the standard now. Thanks again.
weird. I am not aware of any place that 3/8 is cheaper. 1/2 inch is very standard. I would check with your local building office. like the permit folks to see if this is allowed. Cheers!

hrmm is there a reason why they use metal for commercial? my dad chose metal for our house for a reason. just not sure why. wood seems much easier to deal with at least easier to mount things on because more grip.
Usually metal is used when the building is constructed according to the material size in advance. This is how many commercial projects are done. Wood is favorable when you have a lot of variety in finished dimension.
Shouldn't you go clockwise with the rotary tool in drywall? Wouldn't that keep the tool pushed against the outside while its cutting?
clockwise when interior of what you are cutting. counter clockwise when you are exterior!

Our car port was partially closed in when we bought it but in the winter it is freezing. the wall on the house and the wall on the garage are still the original outer stucco and the two outer walls are paneling. We want to drywall the room but how do I drywall stucco? The stucco is very lumpy. I just started watching your video's and your work is not only fantastic but educational. Thank you!
I would install strapping on the stucco or just remove it( which may be really labor intensive.)
Strapping is sufficient just be sure to use a good screw for masonry and pre drill the holes.
I work in commercial... I was told to do the walls first then the ceiling... I’m an electrician, I’m just trying to understand dry wall installs since I deal with it on a daily basis.

Can I assume that your length of screw formula doesn't apply to metal studs? I would presume that all you need is enough to penetrate the metal stud by perhaps 1/2" max. So for a 1/2" drywall a one inch fine screw should be fine correct?
