  • This isn't exactly a how to, but this is how I tested/troubleshooted (troubleshot?) and diagnosed why my 2017 yz250 lost spark on the line at Oakland Supercross Futures • Supercross Futures Oak...
    I have never tested electronic components on a dirt bike before but it wasn't too hard thanks to the owners manual. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

    Thank you for checking out my channel. I make these videos for fun and for fun only.I am not trying to pretend Im somebody Im not. I was inspired by other motovlogs I stumbled upon while searching for riding videos. I used to get annoyed when a video ended up being a vlog. I Didn't want to talk about moto, I wanted to watch it, but it didn't take long until I was subscribing to multiple you tubers. I eventually decided to give it a try myself and ended up really enjoying it. If you enjoy my videos click the subscribe button (don't smash your keyboard) and help my channel grow!

    You seem like a cool dude, down to earth. I fix this stuff for a living but I'm right there with you on the electronics! Not my bag of tricks man. I just put my 87 yz250 back together after sitting in totes for 10 years and gave it a few kicks last night with no luck so I will be out there testing spark today. Wish me luck brotha

    I know it sucks, but you should feel lucky you found the problem pretty quick. I've seen guys pulling their hair out trying to chase down electrical issues...testing, re-testing, swapping parts in and out, running the harness looking for shorts etc. Good Job! Looking forward to seeing it fire up in your next vid. Actually...can you kick it over with your injured foot? Might have to get a designated kicker :)

      Thanks man. I was worried it was gonna take me a long time and spending lots of money replacing working components but I got it first try. Lucky I ride 2 strokes and they have a lot less wiring going on than the modern FE 4 strokes.
      I did get on the bike and try to kick it but that was a bad idea! It hurt and I couldn’t even give it a full kick. I tried to get Kari to kick it but she’s just not strong enough.
      I have most over part 2 filmed but I felt like I gave some bad advice as far as ignition timing so I’m making a spark plug dial indicator to make sure the timing is correct for sure before I start it.

    Thanks. My coil test reads 0. All the rest spot on. Every wire harness connector was encased in dried mud, boots did not do shit to protect them. Don't ever buy used woods bikes. I'm heat shrinking and rtving the clutch cable were it goes into the case. I can't imagine having more wire connectors on a dirtbike your jumping on, to much room for failure if the shit cuts out on you.

      Mountain Smoke Garage loose ground connection somewhere? Maybe start testing components when it loses spark and see if you can find the culprit.

    I read where the factories are removing the wiring harness before washing? Diselectric grease and silicone should fix this problem. Yea I tore this whole motor apart this weekend customer said it just locked up. Turns out the guy he bought the bike from didnt torque the nut on the generator wheel. So wheel is gone, I also think it had the wrong key in it. Lucily thats all that was wrong!

    • @KevinPersonius

      ryan menke I haven’t heard of them doing that. I do know they strip the bikes down to nothing after a race weekend. Dielectric is a good move for those connections though.

    Hello, i have a 2011 yz250f 4 stroke, i pulled the cam box off and in pulling it of my socket adapter fell into the piston chamber. So. To remove it should i pull out the bolts to the celender head and pull it up high enough to retrieve the adapter?? Or is there a better way that you know of ???

    • @KevinPersonius
      @KevinPersonius  Місяць тому

      If you still have the head on I’m not sure how it feel into the cylinder. Did it fall though the intake or exhaust ports? I’d try to fish it out with a magnet if it’s sitting on top of the piston.

    • @charlesjohnston9067
      @charlesjohnston9067 Місяць тому

      It's the top cover the one you take off first to get to the timing chain and cams. I was taking the lastbolt out ,that's when the mini socket adapter came off and fell in , belive me I'm not happy about it either but it happened. Now I need it out. I'm pulling the head up just enough to look for it and get it out , I need to order a carb kit for it to, also the bucket , shems for the valve buckets

    Hey man, im having problems with something electrical that im not sure of, bike was recently rebuilt from top to bottom and i mean everything was changed internally. Bike runs doesn’t start. Bought a new stator and BOOM starts right up, i leave the bike for two weeks and now it doesn’t start. I unplugged the brand new stator and plugged it back and BOOM again it started. Not sure what i should be looking for now, its definitely something electrical, do you have any tips on what i should do/change?

    • @KevinPersonius
      @KevinPersonius  3 роки тому

      honesty man I have no Idea. my best guess is the the connectors are dirty or corroded since the problem is intermittent. either that or maybe a loose/bad ground.

      Short-cutted list for an engine to run is
      1. Air
      2. Fuel
      3. Spark
      But that's actually not correct.
      You actually need
      1.afr (air fuel ratio)
      2. Ignition at timing (spark at the right enough time)
      3. Compression
      Assuming your spark looks healthy and bright, (so then it's not a bad stop switch, because you have spark)
      Afr:
      If you have way too much fuel or way too little, it may not even try to fire.
      Turn off your fuel, drain your float bowl, then try spraying starting fluid into your air intake. Starting fluid has a much wider range of explosive afr, so it's not as picky as gas at starting.
      If your engine runs on starting fluid, then you have a fuel issue.
      If it won't run on starting fluid, you either have a major timing issue or a major compression issue.
      Timing could be a bad cdi, bad stator/magneto, flaky wiring connection or stop switch, or a shattered key on your flywheel/magneto showing it to shift and change your timing (very common with lawnmowers and chain saws, causing them to fire backwards and rip the pull cord from your hand).
      Compression:
      if air can't get in or there is an opening so pressure can't build, then your engine won't run. do a compression test (buy it borrow a compression tester). Remember to use full throttle for the test.
      Could be as simple as a broken reed valve (2 stroke), 4 stroke cams/timing at wrong angle so valves open at wrong times (either by mis-instalation or more serious timing chain slipping), broken or stuck valves (4 stroke) or something like bad rings, a hole in a piston, damaged cylinders, etc.
