As with any internal combustion engine, there is the velocity of the explosive wave front. These engines have a longer piston stroke and even though the rpm is low the piston is travelling at a high velocity. To achieve more power output you need more power strokes and higher rpm, you will need a much shorter piston stroke to reduce the piston to a lower velocity. Compare a convention cannon to the Rail Gun. The projectile cannot travel faster than the explosive wave front.
Essentially it comes down to pure physics... Engine components of such sheer displacement and mass cannot counter gravity.. also with the centrifugal force of crankshafts and other parts they simply cannot rev like their smaller counter parts... BUT.. I totally get what you're saying man ☺️
Thank you all for your comments. I appreciate you all from your memories, both bad and good memories of these engines. Please continue to comment because I read all as far as I have time. Kisses to you. Ted
Happy that I never came across with this engine when I was at sea, 36 exhaust valves to maintain!! I am more into a 2-stroke crosshead engine. That did cost quitte an amount of starting air to get it running, long stand-still maybe? But at no load and on gas-oil the engine sounds nice.
If is a 2 strokes runs at 200 rpm, of os 4 strokes, runs at 400 rpm. The mechanic touch the heads and if he feels some vibration anormal,he discover the cover and fiind the problem.
Sorry for that you have been waiting for a reply. Medium torque by 428 rpm 2685 daNm. Torque with 10 % overload by 428 rpm 2955 daNm. Yes. It´s V18 1500 hp per cylinder. It took some time to find the information. Thank you for your interest. // Ted
Air at high pressure contained in a huge pressure bottle, and a compressor to fill the bottle. the bottle may have the capacity for 15 starts without using the compressor( this is tipic)
Hi. Thanks for the praise. I have not had time to get involved with editing the movies in a while. I have little to dealing with older engines that I will finish during the Christmas season, I have in mind. Have a great Christmas weekend. Regards / / Ted
Yeah, they're the worst designed engines i've ever used. The last ship I was on was a royal fleet auxiliary ship the RFA argus, the RFA still like to use pielsticks for some god-unknown reason! They do sound nice when they're running though :)
looks like a ratte engine lol. my friends think im wierd because i like giant deisel engines and truck with horsepower and torque and they like little sports cars and stuff.
I find it amazing that the engine and engine room look so clean.
To me this is like the bridge between locomotive prime mover and a ship only engine, it sounds so amazingly menacing
I find it amazing at how low of an RPM these engines run at idle. Even under full power, they are still at a less RPM than a car engine idling.
+RakinBill the pistons are huge and heavy, if this engine could run a car rpm, it would break

beautiful sounding engine.
Very impressive sound of a V-18 at such a low operating speed!
They have at least one of these at the power plant in the town close to me. It's been down a couple of months.
Magnificent mechanical beast.
When we pulled into to cold seas I spent a lot of time sleeping on the engines :) good times.

Baxning means inching as in getting a piston to TDC start position.
The Pielstick engines still have a most particular sound but still the engineers nigthmare at sea?
Wonder if I can find a used one in a junkyard somewhere?

I saw two of these at a power plant in Bukit Indah industrial park.
This should fit nicely in my brothers Honda ;)
can one go see this engine run in person?

Pielstick engine 是我的最愛
Ship is not in repairs, why the chain block hang up there always.
Not a ship, its a power station
any ideas of compression ratio on a big engine like this compared to road .. lower ???
About 1:15
"We like, the sound of Pielstick..." *
damn how big are the air vessels to start this engine? runs nice but FME/SEMT/Colt/pielstick or what are they called nowadays really missed the boat.

?BAXNING"? and ?? whats that mean?
how much does this engine consumes for 1 min ?
for 1 minit no ide...but the ship i work on consumes around 40metrictons of heavyfule every 24houers
40 metrictons ? how much is this ? ._.
its around 40 cubics of heavyfuel
About 1600, 1700 l/h , 27 l/min at full load. Maybe more.
423-450 gallons p/h. That is if the 1600-1700 l/h is correct. I rounded up to the nearest gallon.
Whats use for cooling system
We use fresh water in a closed system that is switched to our district heating system.
does this run a city of lights or what
It's only reserve power in case.
Yes!
215 ci per cylinder?
Jordan Roberts EMD'S, have up to 1,010 ci, per cylinder, but they are medium speed diesel engines that run at 900 rpm.
muy bueno, very good
is that a ship's engine
Yes
Good hell just start the damn thing already
it's not just the turn of a key buddy...
Is that a turbo I see?
Yes
Jag håller bara med. Vänta tills vecka 10 4-8 februari så ska jag lägga upp en bättre video om PC4 med förhoppningsvis bättre ljud också.
ues the 4.2's aboard ship...
Wonderful engine! I assume this is inside a large ship?
KJ Rivas Stationary engine with a power generator. Backup for power grid.
This engine is turning an electrical power generator?
Yes. A generator that weights 60 ton.
Ted Lehrberg Wow, she's a large lady.
+Ted Lehrberg ...V18 ? Torque foot pounds?
Sorry for that you have been waiting for a reply.

I'd like to have one of those in my back yard just to watch it run.
What engine is used for the starter motor on this marine diesel?
an air compressor
air or generator started
This particular one is air started.
Air at high pressure contained in a huge pressure bottle, and a compressor to fill the bottle. the bottle may have the capacity for 15 starts without using the compressor( this is tipic)

船のエンジンですか。。
バスターおもしろ jestem tego samego zdania!!
At 09:00 you get to see something move.
This thing is HUUUUGE !
Look at the pipes and then at the people. Imagine how big they are. Or the cylinders.
I could probably fit my car in one !

Holy shit!
That uses way too much air to start. Colt Industries/FM should be ashamed.

VERRY FALOUS
Falous?? Is that even a word?
Phallus?

Tooooorque!
What a fucking crock of shit these engines are LOL
Absolute nightmare for an engineer to work on
