    My mom is a nurse who works in NICU
    Word of advise, when they tell you not to drink, smoke, take certain drugs while pregnant
    They mean it

      Seriously. My mom used to work the NICU too, and some of the stories I've heard from her are haunting. Fortunately, she was damn good at her job, and she helped save a lot of kids. She still gets Christmas cards and updates from 2 families whose now-adult children she saved when she worked there. She's amazing, and incredibly strong. She's a hero. All good doctors and nurses are. Because of her having been a nurse and telling me about what it was like, I have a huge level of respect and thankfulness for people working in the medical field, especially nurses. They do like 70-80% of the actual physical work to help you, but we tend to give them like 10% of the credit. Long story short, any time you have to interact with medical professionals, make sure to be as respectful, kind, understanding and thankful as possible, and listen to what they tell you, because 99% of the time, they're just trying to help you as best they can. If everyone did that, we'd get better help quicker by not taking up their time bitching and complaining at them for things that aren't their fault, and hopefully help to drop their stress level massively.

      Why? Isn't it up to the patient to make such judgments? Your mom might be able to say what something might lead to, but whether or not that outcome is good or bad or how to weigh that against other factors is a value judgement.

      I was born prematurely, kept alive by machines for a short time, and grew up very short (5'2" as an adult) with various health conditions (allergies, acne, dandruff, back pain, occasional random nosebleeds a few times a year, currently headaches, etc.) probably because my mom smoked while she was pregnant with me and both parents smoked indoors during my childhood until finally moving at 13. I also had bad nutrition, very little exercise, and was mostly kept inside.

      In college I was in a dorm that had a special housing project for pregnant students or students with kids. Two of them didn't want to stop the student party life just because they're pregnant and got really angry, when people told them to stop drinking/smoking. It's my choice, all that talk about alcohol is SO exaggerated, what's one can of beer gonna do, get the stick out of your ass.... Well, guess whose babies were premature and way too thin at birth?

      It's quite easy to spot those who fake it in all fairness. What's more difficult is when you know someone has genuine pain but are milking it for time off work. Or as is more common here in the UK, for a sick note they can use to get the Department of Work and Pensions off their backs so they don't have to look for a job!

    • @DoomFinger511
      @DoomFinger511 7 років тому +31

      Backpain is almost impossible to prove if it's real or not. So many possible injuries can cause it from muscle, nerve, spine, bone, etc. And it can be as a result of issues in the legs, joints, brain, organs, etc. That's why it's the #1 condition treated with pain killers.

    • @DoomFinger511
      @DoomFinger511 7 років тому +22

      +Phantomwhite The hard part with figuring out addiction is how to help people who actually have real pain but now are ALSO addicted to pain pills. You have to figure out how to ease their pain while also controlling the pills. No matter why you take pills they will eventually stop working and you have to take more or voluntarily go through a week or two of pain until the persons tolerance drops and can take the pills again.

      the solution is Pairing with clinical pharmacists , especially for family medecine and the icu . Studies have proved it decreases doctors burnout rates and improves care for the patient .
      Give community pharmacists time and resources to teach patients don't overwhelm them for the sake of cooperates . Increase their role , a track to earn licence to independently prescribe like in the UK . repeat certain prescribtions for chronic ilness . Canada is also a great example .
      It would really revolutionise health care at a fraction of the cost.but mostly it would save lives if doctors and patients.

I’ve taken all the classes i need, I’m continuing to take additional classes that teach things I will learn in medical school, and I take the MCAT soon. I think the absolute worst part about the mental health crisis surrounding doctors is that they are discouraged from getting help. If they admit they are suicidal, they risk losing their license that they literally sold their soul for. This HAS to be fixed. Immediately. I’d like to be one of the people that fixes that shit. Because that’s what it is. Shit.

Tried to throw them up, then called poison control when I told her I tried to force them back up the woman laughed and said 'well that won't get you anywhere' we then went of over the meds and it turns out I was fine. • @Primalxbeast
      @Primalxbeast 7 років тому

      omaima el fidha I really think the only blood thinners that would lose their effect after hours would be heparin type blood thinners that they give you through an IV in the hospital. With warfarin, which is the most common blood thinner, it takes 5 days to get your clotting time back to normal after taking it. I think the newer ones only last 24 hours, but I would talk to a pharmacist or a doctor before deciding wether to skip a dose or take the next dose on time after taking a double dose.

      For the most part, parents are FAR worse than students. Far, far worse.
      I work in special ed. Dealing with the various needs and tantrums and whatnot of my students isn't the hard part. Honestly. It's dealing with a parent who refuses to acknowledge that their kid needs support or who gets mad that we had to restrain their precious little angel who was BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF ANOTHER KID and demands a two-hour meeting with the administrator. Then there is the parent of that kid who wants to know why a student was "allowed" to hit theirs...

    Regarding dug addicts: the doctor failed to mention the many addicts that started because a doctor put them on pain pills for a month and then once they were physically addicted cut them off. Never preparing them for the additional pain they will feel from withdrawal. Doctors prescribing pain pills for more then 3 weeks should gradually lower the dose to prevent this. It's a hell of a feeling when your whole body is in physical pain, you don't know why and you realize the only way to instantly make it go away is a pill.

    • @TasX
      @TasX 7 років тому +9

      My dad is a doctor, and I have actually heard him explaining this before actually. I'll try summarizing it.
      Around the mid 90s, more people were arguing for the legalization of opioids and weed. So "studies" were done that showed that opioids weren't addictive when people were in pain. And a ton of people were liberally prescribed drugs up until around 2010, when parma industries, doctors, and hospitals found out that 1. these "studies" were funded by opiate drug companies and 2. people became addicted.
      As a result, doctors have been much more strict now, giving lower doses for a more limited set of physical pains. And the addicted will go through any lengths to get more drugs, which has caused them to become extremely tricky by (eg. asking doctor associates for drugs rather than the doctor for the drugs when the doctor is away) So now, the common patient blames either the doctor or the hospital for this problem when in reality, the burden of the guilt is equally on the pharma, the doctor, and the patient.
      This is also a really big reason why my dad doesn't trust the recent claims that weed has essentially no negative effects for people over 21.

    • @DoomFinger511
      @DoomFinger511 7 років тому +3

      + Radi Bear I totally agree with you and your dad. I heard the same thing about the pharma companies misleading the doctors with studies. On top of that they offered really nice incentives (like free vacations and stuff) to doctors that choose to prescribe their products (like Perdue's 30mg blue roxycotin) to patients. Of course SOME doctors knew their patients didn't need the pills and the doctors were just making bank by charging the clients to keep coming back. But they are usually the one's who got arrested and make up the minority.
      Part of the blame is on the government. The DEA admitted that they knew once they cracked down on pain pills there would then be a surge in heroin use. Especially since the drug cartels jumped on this opportunity and managed to get cheap and pure heroin into the country. So pure and cheap it could be sniffed instead of injected which appealed more to middle class kids who were afraid of needles but okay putting stuff up their nose.
      I live in New York, which is the main hub where most of heroin comes in that then filters out to the rest of the USA. It hit us hard here, especially on Long Island which is all suburban house holds. A bag of heroin that cost $20-30 anywhere else cost less then $10 here and is more pure. Almost everyone here knows at least one person who has overdosed in the last 10 years.
      There's no excuse of a patient/doctor in present time to "accidentally" get someone hooked on pain pills. There is too much information about it now. However there should be more empathy put towards patients that got hook on this several years ago when doctors/patients didn't know better. At least make it easier to put patients on maintenance drugs like Suboxone so they can slowly be weened off.

    Went to the ER after I'd fallen on some ice came in with a very severely fractured arm (right angles on arms are a good sign it's broken), and was complaining about back pain too. The refused to give me any pain medication, even when they were setting my broken arm. Heard the doctor talking later to a nurse about 'the lengths addicts will go to get drugs' in reference to me (don't do drugs, don't drink, don't smoke and was going to school for Astrophysics) but because I was wearing dingy house clothes when I was taken to the hospital they treated me like shit.Months later I was still having back pain, and they finally did an MRI, boy was it great to see the smug look on the doctors face disappear when he had to admit that I'd fractured my back and had legit reason to be in pain. Simple x-ray back when I first injured myself would have proved it, but many doctors simply judge people based on appearance.

    Not a doctor, but I've worked as a clerk at an ER for four and a half years. This kind of stupidity affects anyone with patient interactions. I've had homeless people come in faking being sick just to try to get a place to sleep, drug addicts come in because they were trying to get a quick fix, and even once a psych patient I signed in ended up, (after my shift was over), stealing a security guard's gun and fired off several rounds in the ER, (though no one was hurt), and found out that instead of facing any consequences he was released to go home a couple of days later with a refilled prescription.
    These kind of things will really drive your sanity through the ground, and that's not even mentioning how many patients will fight you essentially over getting basic paperwork information. Though, out of everything, my personal pet peeve is the sheer amount of people who go to the Emergency Room for minor things like a mild fever or upset stomach they've had for a week, instead of going to a clinic. Particularly when those same people complain about other, actually serious, patients going back before them.

    If you've been shot or stabbed, an ER is a good place to go. For routine medical problems or medical enigmas, it's not. The abbreviation usually used for "insertions" is FBR (foreign body in rectum). Yes, lightbulbs are surprisingly common and very unwise. I don't think much of docs who prescribe Percocet because it's really a poor analgesic combination. I'm surprised that it's worth much on the street, but there are a huge number of addicts and their knowledge of pharmacology usually isn't very good.

    I live in the country with a highly underpaid doctors and the government cutting the investment into medicine yearly. Not only regular people suffering from not getting the desperately needed quality medical supplies, but also doctors who do not have neither good equipment, nor perfectly regular stuff like non-reusable gloves. Once I got hospitalized and saw first-hand how the doctors, nurses and orderlies managed to keep the facility going against all odds - and felt huge respect for those fellas. While everybody around was whining, I saw how impossible it was to just get the job done. Those people have balls!

The VA however stopped perscribing opiates because a large number of vets are selling their pills. Well my mom actually needed them, she ended up getting disk injections (dont know actual procedure name) so shes alright now, but the point to my rambling is opiate epidemic shouldn't punish the people that use them for legitimate reasons. The responsible people who use them when they need them and wont sell to easily make a buck. She had oxycodons, and even then sometimes the pain was there, just dulled.

      Acetamenophen does nothing for a lot of people, but will destroy your liver, especially when mixed with alcohol. Ibuprofen (NSAID) is hard on kidneys, especially if you're diabetic. Neuropathic pain is treated with anti-seizure medication (gabapentin or pregabalin), both minimally effective and VERY addictive.
      This anti-opioid hysteria, and gullible doctors, are leaving people in pain. "I can't prescribe narcotic pain relief because you might get addicted," says the doctor who believes the CDC instead of what they were taught in medical school. Less than 3% of people taking prescribed narcotics for pain relief become addicted. Many become dependent, but there's a big difference between dependence and addiction.

Are we seriously not gonna use ground breaking needs like opiods that are supposed to be used to make life as normal as possible for those in chronic pain? And they wonder why people are willing to try anything for pain like kratom so they don't kill themselves. I've been there with the worst teeth pain of my life and disgusted with them treating me like a drug addict when a good look of my face and inside my mouth proves my pain along with me begging for antibiotics and whatever they got before I lose my mind. Like how many are really trying to score drugs from a doctor anyways compared to people in real pain? I doubt it's that high when it's cheaper and easier to get them off the street. Doubt it's that high like so called kratom deaths that are always mixed with 3 other prescription drugs like Xanax. Even if it did kill someone all by itself I have to be more careful with aspirin! I said no doc I just need the antibiotics as long as you agree that it's a need. I was written a scrip for the antibiotics and was out of the ER in 15 min flat. He asked me a few other questions about what I was doing to clean it, he saw that I cut the infection out said I was nuts and was happy to give me the antibiotics. He said he was surprised that I not only didn't ask for pain killers I refused when offered. It's days like that, when I know I made their moment, and even for a few seconds restored their faith in humanity.

      People tolerate pain differently. Suffering through it on principle isn't admirable or commendable. It's stupid and dangerous and sets a very dangerous expectation for people who are not you but are then judged by your self flagellation. Unmanaged pain causes a crapton of problems all by itself (physical and psychological). Doctors exist to relieve suffering, not to encourage it.

    • @mirzamay
      @mirzamay 7 років тому +26

      Aaron Layes dear God, I sincerely hope that showing up at the ER having CUT the infection out didn't actually "make" anyone's day.
      I suspect it made *your* day and you were oblivious to the consternation it caused to ER staff and doc. If I were a doc and you showed up like that... I'm sorry to say that I would file it alongside of those with the shop modified dildos impaled in the backside. Because dude... in 2017 there's no reason to cut infection out yourself. Unless you just can't afford a doc visit. Or If You are of the older generations I can understand it, because in their day you actually did sometimes have to do things like that. But otherwise you are not doing something you should be proud of. You should re evaluate your actions and reasoning, and change your behavior accordingly.

      Yeah, but with a lot of these drugs it's a short term help for possible long term harm. If it hurts, that sucks, but in a lot of situations the pain will go away eventually, but it's possible you could get an addiction, which then causes you, and the health systems HUGE problems.

    I was a good student so my parents heavily encouraged me to go to medical school; I refused because I felt like it wasn't really worth all the time you need to spend in school, especially considering the grueling schedule which oftentimes doesn't allow you to work. I knew I'd have to take up student loans to pay for med school, so I tried to calculate how long it would take me to pay them back. Considering most doctors don't break the 100k threshold (unless they're an orthopedic or plastic surgeon), and that an engineer makes about the same amount with much shorter schooling, I figured that was a better choice. I don't regret my choice at all... Being a doctor is really tough in terms of scheduling, emotional investment, and the pay is not THAT great that it compensates for all of it. I wouldn't advise my kids to go into that field either.

    This video reminded me of a horrible hospital stay I went through. So I went through surgery a few weeks ago and when I woke up I was in excruciating pain. They decided to give me dipyrone and it wasn't helping at all (what the hell, I don't have a headache, my flesh was cut open). I had to start screaming for help for a long time until they decided to speak to a doctor on call (who took a long time to respond) and authorize giving me some morphine, so I managed to get some sleep.
    I went to the room and soon the morphine wore off and the pain came back. They insisted in giving me dipyrone while I insisted it wasn't helping and I was still in a lot of pain. After a sleepless night from the pain and a lot of insisting the nurses went to the doctor on call and I was authorized to take tramadol in case of emergency, while they continued to give me dipyrone every 6 hours. I've seen vets go straight to prescribing tramadol for surgery recovery patients, why do medical doctors and nurses insist on goddamn dipyrone?

      I was knocked out in a car accident last year, and I had to be cut out of my car. I was life flighted to a random hospital. I had no say in the matter; I merely woke up and that's where I was. I was so out of it, I barely realized what was going on and didn't know what happened to me. Even if I could've made those choices myself, I would've potentially died if I tried to drive myself to the hospital because I was in critical condition and would not have been able to make it there in time.

      I'm an RN. 20 years of experience. You wouldn't believe how many physicians have told me that if they had any idea what they were getting into, they would NEVER have become a doctor. One of them even "ran away", and last any of us heard, he was working on a fishing boat. Do what you want, but do it with open eyes. There is no such thing as a "healthcare" system anymore - it is a sick care system, and all those years of training aren't going to mean spit if you think you will do anything other than follow insurance company algorithms. Once you're on the hook for the massive debt of medical school, you're stuck. Having seen what it really is, I thank God I didn't opt for that track. I don't recommend nursing either. It's still the same dysfunctional system. If you *genuinely* want to help people, look into chiropractic or a naturopathic program. If you are just gunning for a big salary, there are plenty of other options.

    My brother had some dental work done, and had severe pain, so he went back to the dentist office and told them. He ended up waiting for over two hours, and decided to leave and went to a different dentist, and the second dentist said he had the worst abscess he had ever seen, and that it could have killed him. My brother called the first dentist office to tell them, and vent his anger, and they said, "Oh, we thought you just wanted drugs."
    I personally am upset about this, because the dentists' office assumed, and didn't investigate, and their plan was to not see him, making him wait until he left or they closed. Personally, I think he should sue the first dentists' office, but then, I don't know if he could win. Either way, it may be difficult to tell who's lying, but doctors shouldn't assume everyone is.

      What's wrong with our government and healthcare system is more like it.
      And we don't *choose* to pay for it. Last time I went to the ER they *forced* me to go in an ambulance just so they could charge us (even though the hospital was LITERALLY around the corner and we could have easily driven)

    • @thegooddoctor2009
      @thegooddoctor2009 7 років тому +89

      You pay for ambulances too, just through taxes. Insurance companies in the US will pay for some ambulance costs, but not all, and most people don't pay the full bill if they qualify as low income.
      Honestly unless it is a legitimate life or death situation you shouldn't use an ambulance, as it takes up resources for those who actually need them.

      I fail to see how they forced you. Did you call 911 first? If so then they sent out the ambulance to cover their ass. If you weren't bad enough that they needed to send an ambulance why didn't you just go straight to the hospital yourself without calling 911? I know it seems easy in retrospect and having time to reflect, but if you're as close as you said why didn't you just go? It's not like a doctor is going to take the risk of putting you in his personal vehicle and taking you to the hospital so you can avoid an ambulance trip.

    Doctors are working wayyyy too many hours. My surgeon saw 76 patients in one clinic day. Residencies are usually 80-100 hours a week, and some surgical residencies go up to 136 (out of 168) hours/week. It's outrageous. A danger to doctors and a danger to the public from incompetency from overtired doctors. I've almost died several times because of incompetent doctors. We need to train incredibly more doctors, and spread the load among them, and stop overburdening the ones we already have. Medical schools need to become larger and produce more students. Or do they? Enormous amounts of skilled graduates are unemployed and no hospitals will hire them. We need bigger and more hospitals then. Or do we? The hospitals already meet patient demand. What we really need to more people being hired and all the doctors working less hours. But then arises the problem of their student debt and demand for compensation for basically sacrificing their entire 20s for brutal education and low-no pay. So how can we make sure doctors get adequately large salaries while giving them less hours to work? Doctors, at least high level specialists, and especially surgeons could stand to earn a little less, but not too much less. So thus is the problem. Not enough money. I hope someone will figure out an answer one day.

      It's quite simple really, you must remove profit from healthcare. All students with the drive to heal their fellow man and the aptitude for it, get educated for free. Payed for by taxes, our taxes. Insurance cost would evaporate as it will no longer be necessary to pay a middle man, whose job it is to pay as little as possible to amass the most profit. Doctors could work as much as the rest of us, and specialize according to their interests, instead of profit.They would be paid through the same system that gave them the education, Our taxes. Or, Doctors could choose to go independent, and compete in a capitalist fashion (since socialism scares America), they could charge for services that they themselves have rendered. They could compete. A competition of healing, can you imagine? The influx of Doctors entering society in just fourteen years, could end our healthcare rot.

      I was pre-med. I switched because I worked in a pharmacy during school and realized there was absolutely no way I could tolerate caring about half of the low lives that exist in the world today. I saw the addicts coming in every day screaming for their pills. No thank you.

      Addiction is a serious issue that can affect anyone. Oxycodone led to huge numbers of addictions and deaths, which is why they are being sued up the backside.
      If we could find out ways to successfully prevent/treat addiction... The world could be one hell of a better place for everyone.

    This video left out a few things: 1) in some states, a doctor can lose their license to practice medicine if they have a mental illness. 2) drug companies spent billions of dollars to get people addicted to their pain killers. 3) a lot of the health problems Americans face are a result of poverty. Doctors can't do much about that. That's partially why they're overwhelmed. People come to the ER because they can't afford regular doctors visits.

    Since so many people are criticizing restraint of prescribing pain pills, think about this.
    Every year, 15,000 people die in the US from overdose of prescribed pain medications. 2.4 million people get addicted to pain pills every year in the US.
    How many people die from back pain? Very few. Pain isn't a symptom of disease, it's a sign. If a doctor says, let's hold off on narcotics and try to fix this first, he's thinking of your HEALTH and well being. Aka a doctor's job. He's not always calling you a liar. (And when like 70% of these people are lying, you can't blame them) If a patient turns down Motrin, or other non narcotic pain pills, it's fairly obvious why.
    Being a Doctor is one of the toughest jobs on this planet. Witnessing death weekly. Getting yelled at for denying addicts drugs. Working 60+ hours a week with very little vacation.
    If a doctor says "Here's a prescription for Motrin, if it persists after a week, come back in and we can perform some tests." Say thank you and take further action if needed. Cuz in reality that doctor is losing money by not having you regularly come in for refills of narcotics..

    • @SixTough
      @SixTough 7 років тому +12

      Plus a portion of those deaths are going to be deliberate suicide so the real number is even lower

    • @Capnsensible80
      @Capnsensible80 7 років тому +7

      That's only deaths from overdose of their prescription you're considering, SixTough. No other addiction-related deaths factor into that percentage, and you're ignoring the fact that chemical dependency itself is a terrible thing which can often lead to suicide. Suicide that may be committed by say, overdosing on your prescription...but for some reason you don't think those deaths count.

    • @SixTough
      @SixTough 7 років тому +4

      Capnsensible80 other addiction related deaths like tobacco? they are not relevant here. Addiction does not equal harm. Human body is simply not harmed by medical opiates other than an overdose. Suicide does not mean a drug is harmful as paracetamol or TCAs are also used in suicide, while otherwise being a safe drug

      There's a difference between restraint and treating people like they're drug seekers the minute they say the word "pain." I have Crohn's and came very close to a having perforated bowel (emergency surgery was required), because an er doc decided I was lying and drug seeking without reading my full chart. I had to drive to another Hospital the next day to get proper attention. Restraint: good. Poor treatment and accusation: bad.
