*"These chemicals can even give you depression, which is figuratively the definition of irony"*
@Jérémy nah if that were the case elderly people that are on oxygen would die because they don't dilute that its straight pure oxygen.
@Jérémy no I know what you mean to much of anything can kill you.
Unfortunately it's a consequence a metabolic syndrome. Your neurons will be deprived of glucose, killing them. This causes the secondary depression.
@@iamthehype3684 Jeremy is correct. Breathing pure oxygen is harmful and can be toxic. People on oxygen are not just breathing the oxygen from the tank, they are also breathing the surrounding air. The tank of oxygen is supplementing the oxygen they are breathing from the air. I believe his point was about breathing ONLY the pure oxygen.

@Quetzalcoatl They do provide care, but it's very clinical care! A therapist talking to you for about an hour and that's the extent of your human interaction for the day! No one can really survive with that, can they?
@Quetzalcoatl I haven't had that experience with a therapist, my has been pretty helpful and supportive. I'm sorry if yours hasn't! People need more love, care and interaction in their lives. We can't really function without it!

I remember being in two antidepressants-effexor and lexapro-and they just totally killed my creativity, and made me feel dull, rather than relieved.
Those are both the same drug, sort of. Lexapro is a slightly modified version of celexa because their patent expired and they needed to keep making money. Lexapro was good for me 20 years ago but I tried it again last year and the side effects were so bad I couldn't empty my bladder properly.
Me on effexor lol. Im the opposite it helps me with my creativity and function but its side effects oh boy.
that's more or less how they work by what understanding I've gathered - they make things a little dull, so if you're stuck in a cycle of pain, it may help you break out. But getting happier, that requires life changes.
Note, Ive been on AD to great effect, because sometimes you just need negativity to be a lil duller to be able to get out of bed and start doing shit. But you bet the moment I felt I could manage without, I quit it gladly. My last pill made me puke if I didn't eat a dinner for breakfast, too.
I love this, I was waiting for the side effects part. One commercial I saw said a side effect was suicidal AND homicidal thoughts. Wth?
That's seriously fucked up.. But with drugs affecting brain I could understand that it sometimes might end up really bad, it somehow could be understood. To me seemed worse that acne cream that could cause in some cases deadly bleeding diarhea. That is seriously disproportionaly high risk compared to what it was supposed to treat.
I love your hair.
Those warnings actually lies too. If you don't have suicidal or homicidal thoughts to begin with, taking anti depressants can't make them magically appear, just like they don't make them magically disappear. That means, if you already have them, then in a depressed state they are likely either supressed or used as a fixation point, because in a depressed state you aren't energetic enough to act on them. However, if you uncontrollably take antidepressants while having suicidal, homicidal or any other obsessions, you might end up in a situation, where you don't have enough time to asses your options (if you take too high of a dose, or if you're isolated yourself, and don't have anyone to talk to), you're energetic enough to act on your obsessions and from a fixation points they become actual goals, since you don't have any other goals at this very moment.

@@francisdec1615it's amazing the only cure for depression is a relationship with Jesus Christ
There’s a whole science dedicated to this. The chemicals are called neurotransmitters, and if you don’t have enough of a certain neurotransmitter, then you may have chronic depression. It really depends on the diagnosis and how you react to certain medications. They do work for a select group of people, but not everybody. That’s why there is such a wide range of antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti-psychotics, and much more.
That's exactly the point: they can't predict which one is for whom yet. It's OK there are many, because everybody reacts differently; the problem is we are but guinea pigs, and it even worsen some people's condition. "First do no harm", said some prominent doctor a long time ago...

I went through a few prescriptions before settling on one (which was scary but I was in a tough spot) BUT I know one person from a family with hereditary mental illness who made a huge turnaround with the very first prescription she took. So hopefully this field will get better.
Good to hear about a positive experience for once. I have been depressed for a long time, about 9 years now, and I haven't once turned to anti-depressants because I'm scared to death of them. I figured that I'll wait for the science to catch up, but it has also taken a big toll on me. I'm 27 years old and completely reliant on my parents, because I can no longer will myself to repeat the same patterns everyday that normal people do, let alone working or studýing. And it just so happens my friends are all financially successful and self-reliant, so of course they don't understand why I don't just apply for jobs and make money.
Anyway, I'm at the point where I might as well experience the horrors or trying on different anti-depressants. Maybe I'll get enough energy to do exercise and some other meaningful self-care

Bralph888 what did you do instead of taking their prescribed shit?
Easy way to combat depression is hobbies. Do something that makes you happy. Whether its games, watching movies, or hell even releasing sexual tension as your body literally can't tell the difference from stress and sexual stress. What ever releases dopamine generally will help you. Also avoid depressing shit. Like movies that have a bad ending or bittersweet or a show that is overly dramatic that pulls on your heart strings.Basically avoid what puts you down and focus on what builds you up. Medicines can help but really if you do what I said it can get you off of it. Just manage your emotions. It may sound hard but all you need to do is stuff you like. "Humans react to bad weather by conserving energy and avoiding social situations"
Jokes on you, I live in seattle.
"We don't know how depression works so we don't know how antidepressants work"
No, we don't know why depression happens to a particular individual because there are so many different factors that can exist separately or overlap with each other and so almost every case of depression, while capable of being categorised, is unique, and therefore we don't know what medication will work for an individual patient until we try one due to a combination of how their biological make-up affects not only their receptiveness to certain chemicals, but also the nature of their depressive disorder.
For example, if one drug is effective for a parent, it's much more likely to be effective for their child.
Not only that but some people have purely chemical depression that will go away with medicine, for some people they only have life issues to sort out because they've lived with depression for so long it's affected their ability to function in general, like how someone may have a permanent limp in the future if their broken leg isn't treated properly during the healing process
Interesting.
So since everyone is different it's liker everyone is an unpaid tester/guinea pig? it's like unfinished $60 video games where we pay to be beta testers.
And the idea that depression is so mysterious and complicated that it's impossible to determine its etiology is potentially very dangerous. A lot of doctors take "depression" as a self-explanatory diagnosis and medicate accordingly. But, say, thyroid damage, whether by autoimmune disease or cancer, can also cause depression; so the idea that one doesn't need to look any further after diagnosing depression allows those diseases to progress. Even after it was obvious my thyroid was the problem, it took me years to find a psychiatrist who would base my treatment plan on the results of regular blood panels rather than going by How Sad I Felt.
Since we don't know how the brain fundamentally works, we don't know how any mental illness works or how medications work. It's not a chemical imbalance and who the fuck knows really? Antidepressants create an artificial condition that your brain has to compensate around. This compensation is the false happy feeling you get until your brain becomes so tolerant to the drugs that maybe it changes permanently or something (who knows? not psychiatrists) and they stop working. Then it's time for the next one and the next one until the healthcare industry has milked your insurance for every penny it can and you are a husk of what you once were that you can't really even remember.

Everyone has to decide for their self what to believe and what not to believe and what a person chooses can affect their mental (spiritual) and physical health. If you want to, do a little research on the “placebo effect” which is based on faith and is the reason why some meds are effective.

But there is a cost-benefit analysis. If you are suicidally depressed, a hard dick may not help. sometimes, if you have the right outlet, it might, but it is hard to chase after that if you are depressed, so---.

Pills to treat depression, side effects include: depression. The circle continues...
This is brought of so often, but basically stupid. If you don't already have depression, don't take antidepressants.
This is a listed side effect, because off-label use. You might not be depressed but have anxiety and get an off-label prescription. Then, if you're very unlucky, you might actually get depression. Still not good, but way less worse than it may at first seem.

He forgot something important: those medecines often "may induce to suicide"!?!?! The exact opposite of getting better and out of depression, right?
Antidepressants don't "induce to suicide". Depressed people sometimes commit suicide, and depressed people also use antidepressants, therefore sometimes people using antidepressants commit suicide, not because of the drug, but because of the mental ìllness the drug was used to treat.
Of course these drugs aren't without their side effects, but they aren't supposed to be used without a good reason, i.e. only for severe depression with risk of suicide or disability, not for mild depression or just bad mood. If the illness can lead to death or disability, one can accept the risk of side effects, do you not agree?
@@exantiuse497 yeah no, they can trigger suicidal feelings. The drug companies admit it.
BTW, antidepressants are the most addictive drugs to try and get off of.
@@madtabby66 Agreed, suicide is a possible side effect of the withdrawal from the meds or even just taking it at the wrong time. Even the drug companies admit this.
@@exantiuse497 i disagree, my wife has been struggling with depression all of her life and only once has she thought of suicide and that was on meds
Okay so suicide risk is higher for people who start antidepressants within the first week or so but there is a reason for it. Lots of them work by delaying the reuptake of seretonin in your synapses which basically bridge the gap an electrical impulse has to cross so you can feel things.
So early on, it hasnt had the chance to properly make you *feel* better but it gives you more energy and motivation to plan a suicide attempt - and better planning makes them more dangerous.
So they do work if you get the right ones and ride through that early period. The additional suicidality is, weirdly, the first step to them making you better. It just needs to be accompanied with careful planning, awareness from loved ones and a very good crisis plan

As someone who has suffered bipolar depression and only recently got medicated, I can safely say that medication is _worth it._ I was lucky enough that the very first one I tried has worked, and I cannot _believe_ the increase in the quality of my life. And this is from someone who was anti-medication for ages because I was medicated for the wrong thing when I was younger.
EDIT: There seems to be a bit of a debate whether mental illness is all in one's head. All I can say on that front is that if you believe that, then you are either very lucky you have never experienced the type of mental illness that takes control of your life whether or not you try to think your way out of it, or you are in denial about what you are suffering. If it is the latter, I hope you can find some way to get help. Even if you believe it is all in your mind, I hope you can at least see a therapist to help you better take control of what's going on in there.
that's not the point at all.
This video is not anti-medication. It is not saying that anti-depressants are never useful. It says that it shouldn't be taken by people without the expertise of a doctor. If you didn't auto-diagnose yourself with a bipolar disorder, then your comment is irrelevant.

I think they should have mentioned how they can make young people contemplate suicide. They mentioned that depression can worsen but thoughts of suicide literally can just come out of nowhere when starting a new antidepressant in people as old as like 25
Yup, one of those pesky side effects can make you feel much worse. Usually because it's a guessing game to find the right tablet and dose
it's a temporary effect since antidepressants tend to restore motivation before reducing the depression

Like so many other medications out there. If you don't know what causes depression and what makes it go away, it's actually quite simple and the medical industry knows this but hides it from the public so they can sell their stupid drugs that makes people feel nothing. Ok, so here it is: Your brain needs seratonin. It's a normal hormone in the brain. People sometimes calls it the feel good hormone. Cause that's one of the things it does. Puts you in a good mood. One thing that helps your brain to absorb seratonin when you have too little seratonin in your brain (that's depression) is tryptophan. Tryptophan is a natural protein in the body that opens the "door" for seratonin to get into your brain. But our bodies doesn't make tryptophan, we need to take it in in our diet. Turkey and chicken is rich in tryptophan. And tryptophan helps you sleep better also. Which gives you more energy, more seratonin, better concentration (seratonin helps you concentrate too) and no depression. Other things helps too. Exercise to get rid of the toxins in your body. The colours blue and green in nature releases seratonin in your brain. Looking up at the blue sky, head tilted up, releases seratonin in your brain. So, eat chicken, go jogging and rock climbing, drink lots of water, walk in the garden. And in these times, one of the things that helps most, is hugs from your family (of course now the ones that lives with you). But you won't be cured if you do all this and you don't have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Listen to the New Testament in one day, and choose Jesus. I have been there, I know what I'm talking about.

maddokcan Well, I've never heard of anyone feeling euphoria when going to the gym, but getting back on target:
You have misread me. Positive psychology teaches people to subject happiness on themselves, and if they can't subject happiness on themselves,-like they are supposed to believe- than they should take drugs to help them get their. Either way, its implied that you should artificially manifest happiness, when in reality, emotions don't work that way.

This video does a poor job of explaining anti depressants, talk to your doctor about it, about your concerns and loss. This video is just scoring cheap points to knock anti depressants.
The video is targeting the core audience who is not depressed. They even said in the video that "if you really need the medication, the doctor will find a way to give it to you. But, if only people who needed it were going to buy it, we won't make money..."
Basically, go ask your doctor for an unbiased opinion on your mental health and be honest when they ask you diagnostic questions.

This was funny and on point as always although this one kinda resonated with me a bit more. I was on anti-depressants for over 10 years and by that point I truly thought I needed them even though I always felt "bleh" anyways. If I ever missed doses I'd go through horrible withdrawals.
Finally after having enough of dealing with so-so doctors and pharmacies giving me trouble filling my meds I just stopped taking them cold turkey. it was hell for a few weeks but you know what? I haven't felt this good in years! I've lost weight,I'm more sociable and outgoing, and i actually feel like leaving my house and doing things.

That's the most sarcastic "cute little doggies" I've ever heard, ever
I'm not sure why, but something about this rubs me the wrong way. I do agree that antidepressant commercials are flowery garbage, but I think it sends the wrong message about antidepressants themselves. Before I was diagnosed with chronic depression four years ago, I was terrified of antidepressants for these exact reasons, that they don't REALLY work and it's all placebo, that they turn you into a zombie, that depression is just "feeling sad briefly" and pills aren't needed you just need to lighten up already! But now I can confidently say going on antidepressants was the best choice I ever made. I started on a low dose of Prozac and have since changed to a moderate dose of Effexor and Risperdone, and finding that medication that works is a wonderful feeling. Pills aren't scary, and I hate that it's thought to be necessary to paint them as these addictive little tablets that you pop like candy to no avail while still feeling like you want to die. It creates a stigma against finding the right help for a real illness. I don't know, that's just what I took away from this.
If there is one that truly works...
Pills should be scary. They're real drugs, and they do things like mess with your heart rate. And your doctor may be too ill-informed to know what's happening and think you're nervous about taking a pill instead of that you just ingested something that is technically toxic and founded on an incomplete science filled with profits and social cues.

I'm glad the antidepressants made such a difference for you! That's wonderful.
I think the point of the video is that antidepressants shouldn't be overprescribed, not that they shouldn't be prescribed at all. My antidepressant tried to kill me (it's more complicated than that, but for sake of time I'll leave it at this). If my doctor hadn't been so happy to prescribe without question, and if she had listened when I mentioned the terrible side effects, that never would have happened.
Antidepressants just need to be used with skill and good judgement.
How do you know if your still depressed..🤔
These vary from pretty good to excellent. This one is excellent.
