  • If you have a failure in reverse gearing in your turbo 400 or 4L80E GM Transmission check the rod length for the reverse servo it could just be a little short and not pressing the band for reverse enough to engage it. Take your time and you can repair this. Drop the fluid, pan and filter. Take off the wiring harness and drop the valve body trust me it will be easier and have the gaskets on hand mine tore they are like 5 bucks. Don't drop the balls and remember there location. Drop the reverse servo and take it apart remember how it comes apart. put the rod back in with the spacer and stick it back in the trans flush mounted. Push up and measure from the back side of the trans and see how far it goes up in the hole. Mine was about 300 thousand in the hole. Add the tip to the rod and remeasure. Mine was at .080 but you may need to grind some off if it is too long. I was told .070-.080 but you need to look up all specs for your transmission. Hope this helps.

Check with the workshop and they said $2000 for rebuild. I live in Tucker and saw your video. Assuming you live in Georgia. I am hoping to save some money if this one is cheaper. Thanks for sharing this repair. I'll be doing the exact procedure in my driveway on a project truck I bought. Drained the transmission yesterday and found two of the reverse servo bolts undone. I suspect someone was in there, so I'll have to check on the condition of this servo and the proper length of the pin. Your video really helps to get my head around this. Should be simple enough to check and fix as needed.

    For all of those asking (AND to help Dave out, if I may)...
    I know he worked on a 4L80e but alot of you are asking about the 4L60 or 4L60e. The 4L60 is the same tranny as the 700R4. The 4L60e is the same tranny also except it's electronically controlled (hence, the "e") instead of Throttle Valve (TV) cable controlled.
    However, they all may have a different length pin. They were "length specific" from the factory. That's why Dave KEEPS mentioning that you MUST measure the amount of travel.
    Replace it with a shorter one, or the same length, and you will have wasted your time. Too long and the reverse band will drag or stay engaged and it won't shift into forward gears correctly or harshly. Or possibly lock up your tires going into 2nd gear.
    Great video, Dave!

    Great video! Bought kit for no reverse in 1999 gmc Sierra 2500hd. I did have a metal hose over my wiring harness that was connected to one 10mm bolt and then went up into another hole. Also kept 6- 8mm bolts for pressure switch separate and needed to take off as they go through valve body. It fell out but used some brake clean on it and put back in during reassembly. Also took out most of valve body bolts except 4 corners and loosened about as far as they would go. This way I was able to take out servo and put in without lowering valve body. Also the transmission filter has a seal on it and I couldn't get it out so took seal off new one and shoved it up there. If it is even called a valve body? I went into O'Reilly to buy fluid and was laughing. I asked how many quarts I needed and he said, "Are you taking out the torque converter?". I said, " Dude I don't know what that is but I'm deep into the transmission and don't know what I am doing." Why? Because I watched this video as well as a couple other transmission teardown and was doing it under the truck after taking a transmission bath. Truck works! Has reverse! Cost $100 with fluid, filter, brake clean, and servo kit. Thanks dude you rock! Blessings to you and others reading this. You can do it! Have faith!

    built transmissions for 47 years,you got guts,and if you are a guy who pays attention to detail,you can build them,trick is stacking the components as they come out,also taking the wobble out of everything is the secret to longevity,you have repaired the trans back to design,changing fluid at regular intervals is everything,bushings,seals and new clutches and bands solves 98% of the failures,but the damn fluid and filter is the key to lasting,change fluids every 45k no matter what,hang in there you got what it takes,it takes guts

    I blew my reverse while stuck in yard. I used the moment to do a good durability test and it did what I expected. Luckily I have parts for and off a 400. So, I noticed you were fighting those seals. Then I realized my reverse bang before blown might have been the seals not being flat teflon like my spare 400 servo. I remember when I built my 400 that I had some thing where I chose the teflon I had because they didnt stick like that. On 4l60's I always use pinless accumulators because the pinned stick and do weird things.
    I plan on rebuilding / going through my 95 4l80, but I removed / cleaned / inspected the valve body to see if it caused the issue. Plate was worn a little but someone did sonnax reverse parts .etc.
    So now I am going to put this little extendo pin I have been saving in and do the same for research.
    My other thing before this happened was a delayed reverse, so I think the rubber seals might have caused sticking with clutch debris and shaved my band.
    I overheated mine during the "test" , but I suspect From examining my servo parts it stretched the cup, flared the metal pin tip and whatever else from seizing and slamming.
    Also not sure if my forward to reverse had some accidental slam damage, but I was curious if there is some kind of part / failure that happens to blow reverse like this.
    I am more along the lines of a seizing reverse servo assembly doing a hydraulic ram to the reverse band forward and backward from rubber seals.

    • @HotRodDave
      @HotRodDave  5 місяців тому

      I am not a transmission expert but the band can break causing no reverse. Lots of parts in there that can cause it but the short rod is the most common that I know of

    • @StealthyWolfDaddyWerewolf
      @StealthyWolfDaddyWerewolf 5 місяців тому

      @@HotRodDave I got mine to kick in reverse yesterday after hours of trying to use the extension piece, grinding it to a nub, then realizing I had to weld the rod to make it .9 longer.
      It worked for a little while, had to lift it off the ground to make something start working, tires roll, then it just gave out.
      So I now have no reverse and no 3rd but it was probably a issue anyways since I discovered the fluid was toast and everything is probably not happy.
      I am still thinking something to do with the servo pin and other stuff / pins not engaging probably because of no viscosity in the fluid.
      Oddly I don't have good fluid pressure in reverse, a little more at 2k but I will soon find out once I get it torn down.
      This is my first 4l80, but I do kinda like the basic design similar to the 4l60 and th400. Only thing I don't like is if I don't know it like the back of my hand, I am afraid of driving it.
      It's expensive for the rebuild parts, but I guess it's the price you gotta pay if you want something simple, heavy duty and reliable when maintained.
      I fear newer vehicles with too many configurations for parts. So it will nice to see and have a heavy duty transmission like the 400 but with overdrive.
      I have been trying to do all my research on it this month and thankfully it doesn't look horrible to deal with.

In my case it was the correct length but you really need to do your homework and make sure you measure correctly. Someone in the comments made mention that there is an adjustable servo or something now. I don't know anything about that piece but it may be a good thing. When I was doing research on the topic I read that there was 3 different size rods from the Factory and often the put a short one in . That being said would cause the band to not engage prematurely in some transmissions after some wear. That's why adding some length to the rod applies the band and reverse will work again. In some cases the band can break and then you have a bigger job on your hands.
