Bloody Roar is still great! Busted it out recently with a buddy. And it still has one of the greatest video game announcers of all time. The way he says "Bakuryu, the Mole" is forever implanted in my brain.
Bloody Roar obviously will never be recognized for this but the game has a lot of credit for being innovative with cinematic supers. In the 90's the 3d games were much simpler with cinematic aspects... BR2 supers were surely among the best works with cinematic effects in that early age. And maybe that work is what attracted public attention to Eighting in the 00s, as the company started making some small fgs like Naruto fgs, and eventually was requested by Capcom to make Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Marvel vs Capcom 3 for them (those two games were not "made by Capcom" but by Eighting, just like SF4 was not "made by Capcom" but by Dimps).
Mace the Datk Age is a non-Japanese developed 3D fighter. You said at the end Tao Feng was the only one. Tobal is probably my favorite underrated 3D fighter along with Last Bronx.
I think Dream Factory is a developer worth talking about when it comes to underrated 3D fighting game developers. Founded by Seiichi Ishii (Designer of Virtua Fighter 1 and the first two Tekkens) His company would make games like the Tobal series, Ehrgeiz, The Bouncer, and Kakuto Chojin. All of these games would experiment with different ideas and innovated the genre. Tobal added a grappling system that was similar to wrestling games of it's time and no 3D fighter has the same level of depth Tobal has when it comes to grappling. Ehrgeiz had 360 movement, meter mechanics and made projectiles more of a focus in it's gameplay, The Bouncer introduced ragdoll physics and button sensitive inputs and Kakuto Chojin would have two movesets per each character with the Kakuto/Chojin movesets, the speed boost mechanic which is used to create combos and setup advanced techniques, an improved movement system by allowing 360 running with dash canceling and a dodge mechanic that allows the player to dodge any attack by tapping forward similar to the parry mechanic in Street Fighter 3.
@@ThrashMetalWolf666 Seiichi Ishii made history in 3d fgs in a way that is oddly and interestingly similar to Takashi Nishiyama with 2d fgs, who created SF at Capcom, then moved to SNK and created the SNK fgs. So in 2d and in 3d, the "pioneer title" and the strongest "rival title" from the rival company were created by the same person. Also Seiichi Ishii could be called an innovator of Arena fgs since those experiments in the 90s can be seen as the early form of that type of game.
Y'all have been making great videos recently -- really impressed with the uptick in quality! I need a Toshinden collection with netplay. Toshinden 1 was my jam. Still play it occasionally.
Though both franchises are now obscure, one almost not even known about in the states, a Bloody Roar and Killing Bites crossover would have made sense years ago.
I remember being really impressed with Toshinden 3 - it had this huge cast of RyuKens for the main lineup that were all differenciated enough to be unique but still familiar enough to not overload the brain... going from Ring Out arenas to enclosed arenas so fights actually lasted... I honestly think the only misstep was making Bombs too damaging. I wish 4 didn't flop so hard, but what can you do?
Man, this list is _wildly_ incomplete. No Fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix, Tobal no.1, Ergheiz, Eratvaju/Evil Zone, Vs., and probably a ton more 3D fighters I'm forgetting.
@@ThrashMetalWolf666 Eh. Not sure if I'd count Thrill Kill (never officially released), or Rival Schools/Star Gladiator (latest entries about to come back in Capcom Fighting Collection 2 next year).
@@ShinUltima There is a ton of 3d fgs if we are looking at the entire list, and not just the good and "ok" ones. If this guy decided to talk about abandoned old 3d fgs he probably knows that there are many more... But just wanted to make a small list of random picks to look like examples. Besides, the video was meant to pick games and comment on each one, so a long list was probably out of question based on his style of content in the channel. In my opinion at least, the idea of making a "complete list of fgs" video doesn't look worthy even for a bigger channel. Maybe a much bigger channel then.
@@carlosaugusto9821 I mean, I wasn't expecting _all_ 3D fighters. But even among notable abandoned games, I'm surprised not to see Fighting Vipers or Ergheiz (first fighting game with playable FFVII characters!) listed. I actually don't care about any 3D fighters, abandoned or otherwise. I just found this list to be... unusually truncated and arbitrary.
Where is tobal and fighting vipers??? I loved battle arena 3 its roster was massive for the time i think 34 characters crazy how many games didnt make it to the ps2
Just like SF in the 2d fg scene, VF and TK influenced a massive wave of games in the 3d fg scene. And also like in the 2d scene, there was a huge load of average and poor 3d games that had no real competitive factor (in sales and impact). The reality is that Sega, Namco and Tecmo were the elite of the 3d genre and most of the rest looked actually dispensable (and some players even say DOA is dispensable). Those 3 companies were at the frontline in mastery of both the 3d technology and 3d gameplay mechanics. So that also contributed to killing everyone else that had inferior abilities in 3d.
The only hope is if Konami outsource it to a competent dev studio. Ideally Eighting, the original dev studio. But i have no hopes otherwise because this genre has nothing to do with Konami. They probably are not interested either.
In the beginning everything was roughly made to fit the "conventional" 2d fg and 3d fg genres, and literally everybody was trying to get in the genre, but the technology evolution greatly enhanced other genres, which started looking more attractive to the general public and corporations than the formulaic conventional fgs. So the conventional fg genre started losing franchises to those other genres. Like DBZ (that had 2d fgs since 93) is pretty much owned by the Arena genre and DBFZ was an extreme exception. And eventually the conventional 2d/3d fg genre became reduced to the same veteran franchises that we all know... except random standalone games that explore an existing franchise to hope to stand out like Persona, Granblue, DBZ, League of Legends, etc. Companies gave up getting in the fg market with true rival games like these in the video. The veteran franchises are too powerful... but really too powerful to the point that it starts looking like a negative consequence in the genre's evolution. Not every genre is so strongly dominated by its very first franchises.
3D fighters being harder to make well compared to 2D fighters and games being more expensive to make is also a factor in why the 3D fighting game genre is very limited compared to 2D fighters. 3D fighters are expected to have a big movelist for every character, at least 50 moves per each character which is way more than a 2D fighter. 3D fighters that have a small or not as big moveset are often criticized for being too shallow despite the mechanics being solid (Evil Zone, Kakuto Chojin). 3D fighters that tried to exist in the 90s and early 00s where often just dismissed as bad Tekken rip offs so most people didn't care about the alternatives, Tekken killed basically every alternative that tried to compete.
@ThrashMetalWolf666 Yeah, that is really another factor if we look deeper into it. The minor 3d fgs are dismissed for being much less complex in moveset. That puts a lot of pressure on a small developer. Then the mainstream franchises (TK in special) became so competent and evolving so much faster, that the public became too picky about 3d fg standards.
The only hope is if Konami outsource it to a competent dev studio. Ideally Eighting, the original dev studio. But i have no hopes otherwise because this genre has nothing to do with Konami. They probably are not interested either.
What happened to all 3-D fighters? Right now we got. Oh Wait there just Tekken Every anime game wants to be an arena fighter Meanwhile I don’t think most people even really like arena fighters. Naruto ninja storm series is kind of popular but even then I don’t think that’s the most competitive game
