Any scammers approach just remember the points to avoid them easily: 1- give them angry face 😠 2- ignore them😎 3-say no 🙄 4- walk fast 🚶🏻♂️ 5- use your phone pretending your talking to someone .📱
Be careful about pulling out phone. Their intent might be to steal your phone. Or get snatch off your hand by a passing motorcycle. I hear it happens a lot in Vietnam by thieves.
I literally met this man today! Thank you for posting this vid, he approached me but I recognised him so knew to dismiss him right away. Can't believe he's still working this area.
Huh haaa. You are a Sri Lankan and you don't know where is the Tsunami Temple in Sri Lanka? Shame on you.... Tsunami Honganji Vihara is located in Peraliya (Near Hikkaduwa) - Take a train and get off at Telwatta Railway Station. It was open in December 2006 (12 1/2 years ago) as a memorial to the over 35,000 Sri Lankans killed by the Tsunami in 2004. BTW, I was born in Sri Lanka, but living in aboard for over 15 years.
@@OscarNonis there's no tsunami temple in Colombo dude...maybe in hikkaduwa. This guy that tries to scam this foreign dude is trying to take him to imaginary "tsunami" temple in Colombo...plus the tsunami temple is not a huge must visit landmark in srilanka like dalada maligawa or something....
Hey, got to know that you are back in Colombo. Please let me know if you like to have a cup of coffee wherever you want in Colombo. I'll sponsor you :-)
ONE BIG TIP FOR TOURISTS: IF YOU NOTICE SOMEONE IS FOLLOWING YOU, DO THE FOLLOWING: 1. TELL THEM YOU DON'T NEED THEIR COMPANY. USE A VOICE TRANSLATOR SO THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN 2. STOP BEING SO NICE TO THEM. BE STRAIGHT FORWARD AND FIRM WITH WHAT YOU ARE SAYING 3. STOP WALKING AROUND WITH THEM AND FIND A VERY PUBLIC PLACE AND OPENLY TELL THEM TO GO AWAY 4. THREATEN TO CALL THE POLICE IF THEY KEEP FOLLOWING YOU OR ASK FOR THE NEAREST POLICE STATION AND TELL THEM TO COME WITH YOU TO TOUR THE POLICE STATION. THINGS YOU MUST NOT DO: 1. DO NOT BE NICE TO THEM BECAUSE THEY INTERPRET THAT AS ACCEPTANCE OR TOLERANCE 2. DO NOT OFFER THEM ANYTHING LIKE MONEY OR A DRINK OR FOOD 3. DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO START A CONVERSATION OR SUGGEST ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS 4. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THEIR REACTION TO REJECTION 5. DO NOT WALK AROUND WITH THEM BY YOUR SIDE OR RIGHT BEHIND YOU OR TOO CLOSE 6. ONE MORE THING... DO NOT BE NICE TO THEM... REMEMBER THEY ARE DEFINITELY NOT GOOD PEOPLE
This is a good list, but can also lead to aggression on their side. I did basically this and got threarend for my life in return in Tanzania. So finding a good middle is key. Firm but friendly no is still the best way, that never lead to me being scammed AND threatend.
This is just like what my sister-in-law's dad (he's American) did when one man approached him asking him to give money with all kinds of sob stories he already had a huge wad of cash with him and was asking all the foreigners in that area. One story was that he has two kids he needs to feed, so my SIL's dad replied, 'oh wow really, I have 8 kids to feed, maybe you should give me money." The guy shook his head no and left quickly with that.
In places like Sri Lanka, India and Thailand, they operate with the collusion of the local police and usually they get a cut. Unfortunately some of these people ruin the whole experience of some of the tourists who come less informed. Delhi, India is horrible when it comes to these scams and funnily most of them have been captured and documented on UA-cam and yet they do the same moves from the old playbook. I consider them more as pests than scammers since most of their schemes are so bunny brained and easy to spot unless you are a total idiot. One good move is not to talk to them or engage them and just ignore them and keep walking.
I'm really sorry for this experience. I have already informed the nearby police stations about this guy. They will take care of this. Sorry again for what you had to go through !
@Dr Shashi Mohan Sharma on what ground? Talking to a foreigner? I agree that the man has ulterior motives, but to arrest him, I dont think this this video is enough.
UPDATE : The guy was arrested last week. He was detained for few hours, warned and released. There was no enough points keep him detained. But the police will keep an eye on him. Therefore I can assure 1 more scammer is removed from the streets of Colombo. Special thanks to Dale Philip for exposing this guy !
@@lowata :Yes, not to arrest him but yes to tell him that they will be with an eye on him and, yes if he carries on disturbing tourists yes he must go inside. Plus if a few complaints against him happen as somebody else reported him already to the police, yes he will be in trouble or otherwise it would be an encouragement for people like him to carry on doing that garbage around. For as a person that hates that kind of behaviour, yes he must be at least warned to stop doing that, or face consequences, and i guess Law in Sri Lanka is not that kind of weak against these ones like we have become in the west ruled by weak laws for bandits and hard tax for the ones paying their salaries.
I had a similar situation in Cuba. I was there with my 13 year old daughter and a man kept following us. He said he knows the best place to buy cigars at a low price and kept trying to get us to go down alleys as we passed them. I told him no many times and he kept insisting we go with him. We were walking so fast and luckily found a little store to go in and he eventually left us alone. It was scary
Dale, as a Sri Lankan I'm sorry you had to go through this. We have our fair share of scammers but most locals are good and honest. I hope you still had a great trip and this incident didn't put a stain on what you thought of our country.
I’m married to an Irishman and I took him to Sri Lanka to show my heritage, I’ve never dealt with that kind of stress and frustration when I took my man to my home country. My ancestors beautiful land❤️ and these scumming scammers just ruin my day and my sanity, it was difficult alone being the person who can speak some what Sinhala and still fight my way through with the folks who annoy and irritated trying to be guides when I know damn well where I want to go and want to be simply left alone in peace in my own country to walk with the man I love without fighting and crying on the road because of these silly people. Watching this video gave my PTSD.
@Ravi Rav Whoa its absolutely clear that you are a tamilian bro. I understand your anger and its fair. I agree with everything you say except the word "Racist buddhist" it ain't right to criticise a religion/race with such a harsh word. Things happened in the country and they were bad i know but sometimes the best thing to do for peace is forget the past bro. There is nothing we can do in the field of politics. Power ain't in our hands. The politicians of our country use the differences between our races and religions to achieve their political selfish objectives. If we keep criticising the religions and races of ourselves then what is the difference between them and us? Moreover that is exactly what the want. To separate us. If you are not happy with the government trust me most of us are not but understand that though we can't do anything about that we can stand together. If we are united then those assholes will not have the chance to trigger our weakness and start off another civil war or whatever. Don't carry hatred or grudges bro. The scars and the wounds of the past will remain forever but atleast they don't hurt anymore right? There isn't a single place in the planet where wars hadn't taken place bro. In India they have castism in America still there is racism. Few other nations sexism. We are all controlled by our leaders and thats the fact. Please realise that hatred isn't the answer for anything bro. Respect all religions and races. BTW if you think Mahinda is wrong and so is Prabhaharan because Hatred isn't the answer for peace. War isn't the answer for peace. I think you've never been to the south or central of our country have you? Come and visit us you'll see how many non-racist sinhala buddhist are available in the country. You'll be shocked to see how many good people are living in this island. There are assholes in every place in the planet bro just misunderstand all the people for that. It's something like not all men are rapist are they? Won't you get mad when someone accuses you as such? That's the exact same feeling the non-racist people would get when you accuse them of being racist. We treat the foreigners as our brothers and sisters bro then why wouldn't we do that to our own people. No one is bad or racist in this country, it's just what the make us feel and what they want us to feel. Together we can change that and be a better nation, make a better nation for our children. Don't ruin that opportunity by spreading such hate comments and growing such harsh impressions in the younger generation of the country. If you are like this and so will your kids , so will their kids and so will there be another war in this country someday. Enough bro! please Lets end this.
Honestly in these situations, my first reaction is to keep walking. You don't owe anyone anything, especially some guy on the street. If he really wants to talk to me he's going to have to match my pace and walk with me. To stop and talk to these people just invites more opportunities for them to talk you into something and give them control over the conversation. Making it easier for them to manipulate you, and harder for you to pull away from the conversation, because most of us are afraid of being rude.
OMG!! the same person scammed me in the exact same place in 2016. He first claimed he was just showing me around because he likes helping tourists, then we ended up taking a rikshaw, which he stopped himself. After visiting few places, he stopped the rikshaw at an empty road where few people were passing by and asked me to pay a hefty amount of money. When I refused to pay the amount he asked for, he threatened to take me to the police and tell them I asked him to buy me drugs (which I didn't). When he saw that I wasn't afraid of the police, he started bargaining. I ended up paying only a fraction of the price he asked, and that wasn't cheap either. Lesson learnt!!
This as happened to my family someone did that and me and my family followed him then when he tried to get us to pay around £250 for walking we said no he threatened the police and every time we tried to walk off he blocked us so we had to push him over and walk off
The English/ Scottish have this problem of when we are talking to a foreigner, we put on their accent to help communicate! It doesn’t work but we still do it
I and my wife visited SRILANKA after the bomb blast on 18 May 2019 We met one travel agent like him at airport he was sooo sticky and irritating He was forcing me much to book cabs hotels and sightseeing from him I told him many times sir please I don’t need your help because I can do all with the help of internet But he was so crazy I asked police at airport to take this man away from us because he was so sticky and forcing much to buy tourism from him. I hate this kind of man We love SRILANKA and wish to visits again and again
Yes if ever someone is so desperate for you to use their service it can't be a good thing. Saying no to an offer once should be enough. For him to keep badgering you is outright rude. Good that you had police there to help get him away from you.
jagjitsingh saluja Saluja thank you for visiting my country.. 😇 me and my family currently away from my country and we are also visiting around the world,, it’s such an amazing experience that visit to a place that never visited... that kind of sucks everywhere,, never mind 🙈
Princess Hashi I am an Indian and we Indians see SRILANKA as our small brother Because we are similar and we have same root. This kind of people are everywhere so we can’t stop them
I remember running away from people trying to sell me trinkets in Indonesia and running away from shoe-shiners in Vietnam. Yes, I literally ran. I was too fast for them.
This happened to my husband and myself in Bangkok He followed us and sweet talked us to go see a Jewelry shop. In-spite of our resistance he still put us in a rickshaw. Since we didn't buy any Jewelry, Coming back was hell as no one was willing to bring us back. Ultimately it cost us 5 times more to reach our hotel. Lesson well learned.
Hey man, im from Sri Lanka and i just wanted to say im sorry for some of the people here who treat foreigners like this. Honestly its kinda embarrassing😅, anyways i hope this never happens again and i hope you enjoyed most of your stay!

Must arrest these peoples cheated to tourist and some tuk tuk high pricing. This is not we want promote srilanka to tourism . Thanks to advice tourists visit Srilanka by safe their money and life
Tourists needs to know this first: 1. First things first, get a prepaid SIM from the Airport or from some roadside communications shop (always get SLT or Dialog they have very good reception) 2. Download the ride app Pick ME, this is the most used ride app in SL. When ever you wana book a Tuk Tuk or a cab to any where use this app or Uber only cos sometimes these ppl will rip you off once they see you are a foreigner. 3. If anyone is following like this dont get into direct confrontation or anything just be polite but be smart as well and get away from them as soon as possible 4. For Ladies I would like to advise you...if you are travelling alone, dont go out into areas that you dont know much of unless you are with someone who you can trust. Also be sensible, dress sensible and be on the alert at all times 5. This is true not only for Sri Lanka but for anywhere arnd the world
you're a better man than me mate, I literally just got back from India where I was supposed to stay 8 weeks, I lasted 2 weeks and got tired of telling scammers to F..k off, it was a horrendous experience, looks like Sri Lanka is just as much hard work as India. I'll go again but I think they are countries where you need a travel buddy to watch each others backs.. thanks for sharing your material mate
Went to Sri Lanka for a holiday a year ago. Amazing place and highly recommended. We dealt with these 'scammers' very early on by simply ignoring them. Absolutely no interaction. The moment you start talking back, they feel they have a chance to convince you. Be polite, say no thanks, and ignore everything else they say as if they don't exist.
@@GreatwhiteShark88 No. I watch gore videos and saw a video from India where a guy was sitting at a bar drinking and one guy comes behind him and slashed his throat with a box cutter and within seconds the victim died in his pool of blood lol.
I'm so impressed by your calm manner in dealing with this man. I love this country and especially the people! We too had a similar experience with a man hanging around our hotel in Negombo. We appeared to pick him up when we went for a walk. Slightly different in that he wanted to sell us some spices etc. We found it very hard to get rid of him, he just wouldn't get the message. Not as sinister as your scam but disappointing all the same. Way better than getting my wallet stolen in St Petersburg Russia, now that was devastating. Well done Dale

you are probably a scammer just like them... Seriously your entire country is just scammers. I get calls from you guys all the time claiming your from microsoft
Does not happen in Japan, South Korea, Australia or Europe. And if it happens in Europe, those who do it are foreigners from African or Arab countries.
@Dale Philip Dear Dale, As a Sri Lankan we have apologizing for this incident.. There are few idiots in here like him.. I'm really sorry for happen this to you..
Years ago 2 in the morning stopping in a red light in my truck and this guy opens the passenger side door ,comes in with a knife asking for my wallet that was it l lost it and managed ( luckily) to take his knife and took his 1$ and 45 cents he had on him . I still have that money in a jar on my desk .
you taking his knife and money off him makes you just as bad as him, as you have just committed a robbery at knife point, where his crime ended up as being an attempted robbery at knife point, therefore it makes what you did back to him a worse crime, no point bragging about it as you have shown your worse than him for doing that, and it also now makes you the armed robber not him
@@Jackwylde68 no its not because its made him worse than the robber as he only attempted to Rob whereas the person who would have been the victim actually robbed him at knife point and had the police been involved then the one that got the money off the original robber would have been arrested and the other bloke let go
As a Sri Lankan, I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. Not everyone is like that. Be careful when traveling with such people. Have fun bro 🔥
I'm proudly Sri Lankan and I feel disgraced to see our visitors being tormented like this! I think sunglasses and earphones (not necessarily playing music) could go a long way to shake these buggers off! Happy and safe travels Dale! Thank you for the good exposure you're bringing us with your videos! Good stuff
@@Dale_Philip LOL! I'll give you some vocab mate, no worries! 1. "Mata epa" = I don't want (Mata = For me & "epa" = don't want/ no need) 2. "Yanna" = simply "go" 3. "Yana-wako yanna" = something to the effect "Can you get the hell out of my face?" 4. "Pala-yan yanna" = this is more forceful and rude (I think this best suits "Get lost") Also stress "pala", like PALAyan yanna! Obviously 3 and 4 are not considered filth, just forceful and rude. An applicable filthy word in this context would be "PAKO", *PLEASE USE WITH CAUTION* The weight of this word is pretty much in the scale of "f*cker". You can place it absolutely anywhere (eg: all 3 works equally well - pako palayan yanna, palayan pako yanna, palayan yanna pako) Well, this sure has been fun! Hope this helps! Cheers! :D
Sri Lanka is pretty tame in my experience and only Colombo tourist areas have people like these. You should try Delhi Or Bangkok which are swarming with touts and scammers everywhere.
GrandAdan Unless this is meant to be sarcasm, Bangkok is a city rife with scammers in every corner. Thailand gets better once you go up north or smaller and less touristy cities but Bangkok is not one of them and Phuket is slowly turning into Bangkok like place. If you want to meet real honest Thai people, head up north to Chiangmai Or places on the Mae Hong Son loop or any smaller and less visited by tourists places. Bangkok is a scam city just like Delhi for the same reasons and conditions that would foster a scam city.
Similar scams to this in Thailand. Some random good Samaritan will stop you on the street and ask where you're going, then they tell you that attraction is closed for maintenance, they then say they can flag a tuk tuk and organise him to take you to a few alternate attractions. He flags down a tuk tuk who is the other partner in the scam and haggle the price down to make it look like you're getting a fair price, if you are naive enough to get in the tuk tuk the driver will ask you if he can take you to one extra place just to have a look, the place turns out to be a tailor shop where they have their high pressure sales pitch ready to go. The shop owner doesn't ask if you want a suit they just get the tape measure and get your measurements and then sit you down with a catalog and give you a free class of coke, sit down with pen in hand and order book open and ask you which suit you'll be buying. They don't take no for an answer until you stand up and walk out on them and get back in the tuk tuk. The tuk tuk then drives off and he says he needs to take you to one more place (they get cash payments for bringing customers and bonuses if the customer buys something). You get the general idea. The tuk tuks are notorious for this , taxis less so, they tend to scam by driving with the meter off or have the meter rigged to overcharge, so always go by the meter and watch it closely from the moment you get in the vehicle. As for the tuk tuks I recommend you avoid them completely. General advice is to do extensive research about scams at any place you plan going to, it will save you time, stress and money.
Me and my friend was in a hurry in Hong Kong and wanted to go to a building which was just on the other side of the block and we could see the building. We waved down a taxi ( Red) and asked him to quickly take us there. This guy must have thought we have no idea where the building was because we would have walked there. We were prepared to pay the minimum fee which was a few HK$. And it would not have been exceeding that had he taken us there right away. But this guy took off passed the building went around the block way passed, kept driving in circles and the more we told him to stop and stop fooling around the more he ignored us taking us for a ride. His meter just kept going. Eventually we were close to the building and the traffic light turned red. He was stuck. We had the initial ( correct) minimum fee on which the meter still stood as we passed our destination in the first go in our hand. We tossed it onto the seat next to the driver and jumped out.
HI Dude. I also had plesure to meet this guy in Colombo 3 times because I was living in this city over 1year. 1st time he sold the same story to me as well. After couple of minutes I saw him close to the President's House. But that time he didn't start talking to me again. Again I saw him walking arround the area where I met him for the first time. I have well memory for faces it is why I recognized this bugger on your video. Greetings Lukasz
I get the same scammers in Las Vegas. It starts with, "Where you from?" I don't answer. Then they insult you for not answering. Better to be insulted than dragged into their scam.
I visit vegas twice a year now for almost 2 years now going on a third year; love the food, and with a cheap hotel, you can eat cheap most days and save up enough money to splurge at a fancy place you wouldn't get to back home and the entire trip (I drive there, doesn't take long) ends up being well worth the price of the visit. I got scammed 20 bucks one time and from then on I learned one of the best ways aside from not answering to the "where u from" question is to reply "I live here" even if they think or know i'm from out of town, i always reply that I live here followed by a "not interested" if I feel the need arise to add that bit on, and just keep. on. walkin'. Also if you get offered free tickets to a show/gondola ride and what-not, then yes, it IS legit free stuff, after a 1-2 hour presentation that they chauffeur you to-and-back for free in order to sell you on a timeshare thats HELLA pricey and once you google this "scam" of which they ask you NOT to pull out your phones during the presentation (Obvious red flag there so you don't google them once you know their company name lol) you will find HELLA one star reviews because it's their job to sell you on the product, and not to follow through on the quality you were shown at the presentation that is obviously way too good to be anywhere near true. Best to just pay for the 100-150 bucks to that Ka at Cirque de Soleil show or MJ experience that to sit through that salespitch again; just look for the people in purple/maroon colored suits and avoid them. But hey, if you want a free 79 dollar ticket to Zumanity then by all means.
I very nearly ended up beating a guy sparco on the Vegas strip for the same reason, he was barely on his second sentence and the only thing that prevented it was a passing bike canary cop...
About 25 years I was with my family on holidays & we went to Las Vegas. We were walking up the strip & one of my younger brothers got targeted by this pathetic scammer. My oldest brother stepped in to shoo the scammer away. My brother was obviously not interested in what the scammer had to offer, turned & walked away with my younger brother. The scammer yelled at my older brother "you asshole faggot!" BIG MISTAKE! Later on my younger brother told us that my older brother turned around, grabbed the scammer, and body slammed him into the concrete. Out cold. Discussion over. 👍👏👏
I hold my hand out when i see them coming, and just say "I'm not interested". Once one got upset with me and said "You don't even know what i'm going to say", i said, "i'm not interested in what you want to say".
Part of the reason for visiting a country is to meet and interact with its people. While you have to be weary of criminals and scammers, becoming paranoid can ruin your experience. Avoiding anyone who is attempting to lead you to a particular place or area is always a good idea and needless to say. purchasing items from complete strangers will never work out well. The main problem is that being street wise in your own country is fairly simple, but it is a lot harder in other parts of the world.
We had a similar situation. I kept telling my wife and brother in law that the guy is trying to scam us, but they fall into his trap and give him 30 dollars. Being a citizen of South Asia, I knew what the guy was doing, but my European wife and in-laws were too naive and fell in the trap. SMH!! You'll find these people everywhere in South asia.
I'm a New Yorker. We just politely tell them to go and have relations with themselves. It takes about 5 seconds. You should try it out next time you're approached by a stranger that wants to offer you unsolicited help.
Dale, A job well-done buddy. Being a Sri Lankan I feel shame to see these type of clips, we call them nothing but "Pimps" always there to ruin the image of the Island by trying to play-out tourists one way or the other. The area where you were around is very famous for scammers for many decades. My best tip to all tourists is so simple, any Sri lankans interact directly or indirectly with the Tourists/Visitors/Foreigners should listen to them very carefully to make sure that they are trying to signal you that they are a "kind of poor" for these "Pimps" pay nothing or little than what you initially intended to offer, still depends on subject. Usual Trick of the trade are as follows; 1.Not straight away, but may say, "My earning is not enough to look after my family that they are Poor or very poor". 2. May advise you "Sir/Madam Watch out when exchange your currencies to local currency" True, but travelers are well aware about it. 3. Criticizing the political status of our country. 3. trying to over pamper you. 4.They may fool you by learning your nationality, "oh I love Mongolians" if you say that you are from Mongolia. 6. They may advise you not to buy anything from this place or that and will go silence, they know soon or later tourists will seek advise to recommend a good place and tourist will end up paying double, triple or quadruple by purchasing products from where they recommended. 7. May attract you by an unbelievable offer for you to sell what you possess. 8. Be very careful with the three wheelers (Tuk Tuk) they fix you one way or the other by overcharge or take you for a long ride, we Sri lankans hate them too, the call cabs are far better. But, But, But please tip to all those behaved in a decent manner with what you can offer. As a Sri Lankan I advise all Tourists/Visitors/Foreigners to act smart and not to allow these "Pimps" to bite you off. In general term Sri lankns are fairly decent.....Certainly, Sri Lanka is a very beautiful Island to explore....
These days people are very smart .... you can google and find lot of thing about any country .... be careful where you go ... best way is ignore them first place ..
I have been to Sri Lanka many times and I regret to say that this is an all-too-common type of scam. Dale does the right thing not to succumb to this (though is perhaps a little naive at first - his anger is more evident later in the video). I was 'kidnapped' in Sri Lanka some years ago by another type of scam, which involved threats by the scammers that I would be taken to the police if I did not pay up, so I said "Fine, let's go...." and that put them off! Sri Lanka is a lovely country in so many ways and I have enjoyed my visits very much, but being constantly lied to and with so many attempts to extricate money from tourists without providing a proper, honest service in return, does spoil visits there (particularly in Colombo). Don't stop going there because of this - they need tourists after the terrible terrorist attacks - but be extremely vigilant, and walk away as soon as you can, with a firm "No!" if any offer seems remotely like a potential scam.
Bro why did you even go to Colombo? It's fucking shit there. If anything, you should've went to Jaffna or somewhere down south. I'm not Sinhalese so I can't guarantee u which spots in the south is good. But the north seems more friendly and welcoming...
Agent Smith Yes but this is Sri Lanka not Bangkok. It makes me wonder what a bloke who is interested in hot girls and cold ice cream is doing in Colombo and, more to the point, Why did Dale go back for a second visit? What unfinished business did he have? So many unanswered questions.
I was in Sri Lanka for a month and don’t think I had a single genuine conversation with someone that didn’t end with it someone then asking me for money. Be it English coins, tickets to their children’s shows, or just being super nice and then asking for some cash. Beautiful country ruined by the constant harassing and uneasiness
I had the worst when I got of a small bus in Phon Phen Cambodia. 20 locals touching me asking for taxi taxi. I lost it and told them all to F off. Then I went to a quiet guy standing away from the crowd and got his taxi. Go to the quiet ones they won't hassle you and hopefully teaches the others the same. Even when you sit at a cafe facing the road several just stare at you waiting to pounce like a vulture. JD
There was actually a policeman at some point and they went past him. I presume if he had just stopped and explained red shirt was harrassing him... Although the police could be corrupt.
@ubokwilie It depends on the area and the people living there. I travel a lot and there are parts of the UK, France and Italy where no one will bother you at all. The third world is on average far more dangerous. That said if you want to visit Sri Lanka as a tourist you would be wise to stay within the tourist resort and surrounding area. I wouldn't say Sri Lanka is particularily bad actually. But many African countries are far more dangerous than average.
@@ult7511 Are you Spanish. I will tell you a true story. Some friends of mine who are rollerbladers went to Barcelona to skate street. Anyway some guy in double denim, real sketchy, looked like a hobo walks in. He wanders around aimlessly asking strange questions, looks drunk or mad or something. They are all laughing at this weird guy. Then they turn around and their bags with the Euros and their passports are missing. So one of these bladers chased them down and the thief dropped the bags in a trash bin. Very lucky! Obviously the guy who grabbed the bags was friends with the mad guy.
As someone who's traveled to many places, unfortunately it's really hard for me to trust locals I meet. When I backpacked 16 countries in Eastern Europe, I was too skeptical to even take a taxi!! I've definitely learned a lot since then and have gotten better at trusting people, but there's definitely scammers out there!
@Spike Elwood I pretty much included every Slavic speaking country (aside from Romania, Hungary, etc.) into the Eastern Europe category. I know that technically there aren't 16.
I've seen so many videos with scammers following tourists and not accepting "No" and I admire all you people staying calm and all. I'd probably end up shanking somebody 🤣
Really appreciate your sharing this video with so much detail - it helps all fellow travelers identify not only this scam, but other similar scams. It's unfortunate that we have to keep our guards up instead of just enjoying everything, but that's the way it is.
TBH if anyone approaches you like this you know he up to no good ,well i do done a lot of travelling you can see them far enough give them sign language lol
Love this video catches the scam!! Keeps it respectful but points out the problem. You don’t see this very much in the U.S. to have a problem but to be respectful about and just bring the facts!!
I was in Colombo 2 weeks ago and was approached by scammers twice. The first one claimed to be a teacher who wanted to take me to a festival involving elephants. The second claimed to be a policeman (helping tourists on his day off) who was providing helpful advice like "that roads closed, you can't get there because of a protest", etc. In both cases they followed us around and tried to funnel us into a tuk-tuk, which we refused. I'm not sure what happens if you get into the tuk-tuk, but it's almost certainly expensive and possibly dangerous. So: never get in the tuk-tuk, you have to control the situation. Once they failed to transition to the tuk-tuk they gave up. In general you'll find people providing unsolicited help at various places, for which they will eventually request renumeration. If you signal clearly you don't wish to interact with them you can make them go away, but you may have to be very clear.
First of all Dale, thanks for taking the effort to share this video. I’m sure it will greatly help to create awareness amongst other tourists who are planning to visit Sri Lanka. I visited Sri Lanka in 2017 with my family and was scammed into buying fake gems by pretty much the same tactic. The only additional thing he did was he said it’s a special festival day and that they are having some special discounts for gems. For whatever reason it was that day, we didn’t notice anything strange as the gentleman who spoke to us look decent and properly dressed in shirt and pants and he spoke perfectly well English, and we ended up buying into his scam where a tuk-tuk suddenly appear and ready to fetch us to 1st a temple and then to the gem shop. We only realised we were scammed the next day (after we already purchased those fake gems the day before) as strangely a different man again wearing shirt and pants with a land yard around his neck showing he’s from a company and said he got off work and saw us walking around so thought he could help us, where he approached me and mentioned the same festival again and the same discount for gems. That led me to start thinking about the events that happened the day before and when I stated to connect all the dots, I then realised I’ve been scammed. So I immediately went to the nearby police station to lodge a police report and asked the officer to open up a case against the shop that sold us the gems. I even insisted the officer to go with me to the shop to talk to the owner, but the officer made the call and spoke to him over the phone for a while and said the owner agreed refund me in full (as that was the agreement we had the day before). In the end, I had to go with one of shop’s staff to the bank to do the reversal as they had cleared the transaction last night quickly. I gone through all these crazy procedures of the bank just to make sure that they reverse the transaction back to me, and in the end I lost couple of dollars (due to exchange rate and tuk-tuk ride to the shop) and couple of hours in all of this crazy scam stuff. Just wanted to let all fellow travellers know so they’ll also be extra careful especially when they travel to Colombo.
@Free Trolling In Norway such nonsense doesn't happen to tourists, so it is not everywhere, but many countries are indeed awful for these acts of dishonesty and attempts to rob tourists of their money. Of course nowhere is perfect, but these sort of dishonest and shabby stuff shown in this vid or the comment above are just unheard of in a country like Norway.
That's really good you have educated the people, and it's so disgusting to see these things in Sri Lanka, as no one would expect this kind of embarrassment, I'm my self Sri Lankan and lived in London for over 6 years, and have faced for so many incidents than this, unfortunately.
DUDE! This is just crazy! The world is such a small place, you see, I started working at the Bank (you passed while walking; MCB Bank, the green & blue board in front of the port) in March 2019. I was on my way home after work one day in that month and I can sware it was this bugger that tried talking and asking questions while walking with me. Basically thought I was a non-local (even though I am lol! I do have a little Irish blood, but heck😂) Bugger ruined my evening and made me feel insecure in my own country! Lolz Thanks for posting this, I do enjoy your vids✨

ONE BIG TIP FOR TOURISTS: IF YOU NOTICE SOMEONE IS FOLLOWING YOU, DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. TELL THEM YOU DON'T NEED THEIR COMPANY. USE A VOICE TRANSLATOR SO THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN
2. STOP BEING SO NICE TO THEM. BE STRAIGHT FORWARD AND FIRM WITH WHAT YOU ARE SAYING
3. STOP WALKING AROUND WITH THEM AND FIND A VERY PUBLIC PLACE AND OPENLY TELL THEM TO GO AWAY
4. THREATEN TO CALL THE POLICE IF THEY KEEP FOLLOWING YOU OR ASK FOR THE NEAREST POLICE STATION AND TELL THEM TO COME WITH YOU TO TOUR THE POLICE STATION.
THINGS YOU MUST NOT DO:
1. DO NOT BE NICE TO THEM BECAUSE THEY INTERPRET THAT AS ACCEPTANCE OR TOLERANCE
2. DO NOT OFFER THEM ANYTHING LIKE MONEY OR A DRINK OR FOOD
3. DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO START A CONVERSATION OR SUGGEST ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS
4. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THEIR REACTION TO REJECTION
5. DO NOT WALK AROUND WITH THEM BY YOUR SIDE OR RIGHT BEHIND YOU OR TOO CLOSE
6. ONE MORE THING... DO NOT BE NICE TO THEM... REMEMBER THEY ARE DEFINITELY NOT GOOD PEOPLE
All i needed
This is a good list, but can also lead to aggression on their side. I did basically this and got threarend for my life in return in Tanzania.
So finding a good middle is key. Firm but friendly no is still the best way, that never lead to me being scammed AND threatend.
Dale literally did the do not things and got away lol
The trick is to use caps lock when communicating with them 😂
Erm you might not even want to engage with them in any form in the first place..no eye contact no conversation no exchange
This happened to me in Mexico. Less than a minute into the scammer's conversation, i told him i had lost my wallet and asked if i could borrow $20. :D

Thats a good one for sure
This is just like what my sister-in-law's dad (he's American) did when one man approached him asking him to give money with all kinds of sob stories he already had a huge wad of cash with him and was asking all the foreigners in that area. One story was that he has two kids he needs to feed, so my SIL's dad replied, 'oh wow really, I have 8 kids to feed, maybe you should give me money." The guy shook his head no and left quickly with that.
Lol
Yes, when you see someone that you know will beg for money, ask for a loan before he can. Works everywhere.
These scammers need to be whipped. Travel safe mate!
I would be happy to arrange the whipping!
:)
I'm really sorry for this experience. I have already informed the nearby police stations about this guy. They will take care of this.

@Dr Shashi Mohan Sharma on what ground? Talking to a foreigner?
I agree that the man has ulterior motives, but to arrest him, I dont think this this video is enough.
Police get commissions too, they will free him in a heartbeat.

Every Part of a Country there is positive and negative people
" THE WORLD IS NOT BALANCE IF THERE IS NO NEGATIVE VIBES!

You're the one that should be taking him to the police. Hope this scumbag gets what he deserves eventually.

I need to learn how to say "get lost" in Sinhalase. Maybe that will make these guys think I'm not an easy target like a tourist who's just arrived.
@@Dale_Philip LOL! I'll give you some vocab mate, no worries!
1. "Mata epa" = I don't want (Mata = For me & "epa" = don't want/ no need)
2. "Yanna" = simply "go"
3. "Yana-wako yanna" = something to the effect "Can you get the hell out of my face?"
You can place it absolutely anywhere (eg: all 3 works equally well - pako palayan yanna, palayan pako yanna, palayan yanna pako)

Sri Lanka is pretty tame in my experience and only Colombo tourist areas have people like these. You should try Delhi Or Bangkok which are swarming with touts and scammers everywhere.
There are scammers in every country and they prey upon gullible tourists.

I'm a Si Lankan and am ashamed of this type of scams targeting tourists. Thanx for exposing them.

I just act like I don't hear them and continue on my way. Anytime a stranger starts off with "sir", I already know they just want my money.
I hold my hand out when i see them coming, and just say "I'm not interested". Once one got upset with me and said "You don't even know what i'm going to say", i said, "i'm not interested in what you want to say".
Just walk away and say no words. It works everytime

Good for you.

Sadly it’s the way of living for ppl there, they either learned it from their parents/peers. They think it’s normal.
In the third world if you are approached for no reason it is almost always a attempt to separate you from your money. Best thing cut them right away
Its really dangerous and if you speak complete english then your the most target of those scammers, its the same in my country.

No i was planning to visit sri lanka..but no thank i won't come
@Free Trolling In Norway such nonsense doesn't happen to tourists, so it is not everywhere, but many countries are indeed awful for these acts of dishonesty and attempts to rob tourists of their money.
